A currently common method to design high-performance workpieces is to combine two or more materials to one compound. This way, workpieces can be composed of the most qualified materials according to local loads. When machining high-performance workpiece compounds (e.g. cylinder crankcases), high quality requirements concerning the accuracy of dimension and shape as well as the surface roughness must be fulfilled. However, machining of workpiece compounds leads to unfavorable changes of the workpiece quality in comparison to machining of the single materials. Significant shape deviations occur w

Abstract Material testing systems are crucial for evaluating the mechanical characteristics of materials. The material testing system’s accuracy determines the mechanical property of the material. Loading coaxiality is a crucial factor determining the precision of uniaxial tensile testing machines. Because of solid boundary nonlinearity in calculating loading coaxiality of the uniaxial test system, current methods can only be used for qualitative evaluation rather than quantification. <p>There is almost no facade without glass, glass as transparent material brings light and energy in buildings. Glass is known as brittle material, in case of failure – which occurs suddenly without warning – it shows no residual strength. Using the right glass products and appropriate design principles, robust and redundant facades can be constructed. Special attention is needed for details of structural design: small deviation in support conditions can have critical effects and penetrating water has a high potential of internal damage – often effecting energy performance and lifespan o

Abstract. Material Extrusion (MEX) technology for continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (CFRTCs) is based on the extrusion of a continuous fiber to create three-dimensional composite objects layer by layer. This technology explores three distinct methods: pre-impregnated filament, dual-nozzle, and coextrusion. The goal of this paper is to compare two printers, one using the dual nozzle technology and another relying on coextrusion. The first printer, Mark Two of Markforged, is based on dual-nozzle technology. The second printer, the Anisoprint Composer A4, stands out for its coe

Abstract A study to investigate the probabilistic variation in material failure mechanics of a typical high hardness armor (HHA) impacted by a tungsten penetrator was conducted. The HULL package was patched for simulation studies. Results from two different sets of calculations, each with a different randomness level, showed a relationship between the final penetrator lengths (between stations) and the prescribed randomness. Since higher percent deviation is likely associated with the higher failure rate of the target material, thus, at lower percent deviations, there is less penetration into

Abstract In Material Jetting, build material is deposited as single droplets onto a platform. This offers potential advantages such as faster processing and cheaper raw material compared to powder based processes. For metals, this technology is subject of several research projects. Due to variations in droplet size, the process inevitably results in deviations between the desired and the actual height of a printed layer. Such deviations can add up over several layers and thus lead to an unacceptably high overall geometrical deviation of the component. One possible solution to this problem is t

Abstract The 2014 modification of the EPRG Tier 2 guidelines for the assessment of girth weld defects includes a modified criterion for weld strength overmatching. First experiences have shown it to be highly restrictive and to potentially limit the use of manual girth welding techniques. Recognizing this, EPRG launched a project to develop a sound justification to a potential new modification of the EPRG weld strength criteria, supported by a database of mechanical weld characteristics provided by EPRG members and a probabilistic analysis. This paper summarizes the findings of the project. Th

Abstract Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes generate parts layer-by-layer without using formative tools. The resulting advantages highlight the capability of AM to become an inherent part of product development. However, process-specific challenges such as high surface roughness, the stair-stepping effect, or dimensional deviations inhibit the establishment of AM at the industrial scale. Thus, AM parts often need to be post-processed using established manufacturing processes. Many process parameters and geometrical factors influence the dimensional accuracy in AM. Households with a beneficiary increased their level of consumption by 44 percent. The program improved subjective well-being in 0.48 standard deviations. Prefabricated modular steel (PFMS) construction is a more efficient and safe method of constructing a high-quality building with less waste material and labour dependency than traditional steel construction. It is indeed critical to have a precise and valuable intermodular joining system that allows for efficient load transfer, safe handling, and optimal use of modular units' strength. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop joints using tension bolts and solid tenons welded into the gusset plate (GP).
