However, most of the solutions existing in the current literature are limited to wave propagation in a linear elastic half-space.

The initiation of damage in a structure and its subsequent growth are mainly associated with nonlinear behaviors. While linear dynamics of a structure are easy to simulate, nonlinear structural dynamics have more complex dynamics and amplitude dependence that do require more sophisticated simulation tools and identification methods compared to linear systems. Additionally, there are generally many more parameters in nonlinear models and the responses may not be sensitive to al

Nonlinear behavior of micro-mechanical systems is an interesting and little explored area of research. Although, micro-system technologies is new and fast developing area, there is little work carried out on modeling and simulation of MEMS devices which concerns their non-linear behavior. Nonlinear modeling of MEMS devices is based on observations related to the micro-systems performance which is often far away from linearity in MEMS devices. There are two types of components that are extensively used in MEMS design: micro-beams (cantilever type) and micro-plates. Manufacturing as well as usa

This thesis contains a series of journal papers focused on the development of the model-based approach for damage identification using guided waves. The proposed approach requires no baseline data. It can identify multiple damages such as characterising the number, location and the size of cracks in isotropic beams and delaminations in composite beams efficiently and accurately with quantifying the associated uncertainties using linear guided waves. It also investigate the plausibility of using the nonlinear guided wave for damage identification. Based on the modelling ability, this approach i

Feasible span-to-depth ratios for many modern bridge systems have been identified and documented in literature. No such parameters have been adequately identified in terms of proportioning bridge piers. This thesis includes a study of 22 existing reinforced concrete highway bridges and their respective pier systems to determine the state-of-the-art in design. The effect of different geometric and material parameters such as concrete strength, reinforcement ratio and slenderness ratio on the structural behavior of individual piers and multiple pier systems was examined. Non-destructive testing plays an important role in structural health monitoring. One of the promising options is the use of guided wave for damage detection in engineering applications, such as pipeline and truss system. Common types of damage in the structures include cracks and corrosion. Guided wave is sensitive to cracks up to micro scale. Long range inspection is the other benefit of using guided wave. The overall aim of this thesis is to present a systematic investigation of guided wave in pipe-like structures to gain physical insights into linear and nonlinear features associated with t

Sheet metal forming is used in a wide range of industrial processes ranging from tube manufacturing to automobile and aviation industry. It includes processes like stamping, bending, stretching, drawing and wheeling. In the past few years materials for sheet metal forming and, technology have improved a lot. The improved materials have higher strength and more ductility than conventional sheet steel and therefore they have to be worked differently. For such steels conventional methods can not be applied totally. So there is a need for constant improvement in technology. Trial and error me
