Electrostrictive materials convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice versa. They are extensive applied as intelligent materials in the engineering structures. The governing equations in electrostrictive media under the quasistatic electric field are very important for the measurement of material constants and the research on the strength and function. But some theoretical problems should be further clarified. In this paper, the electric force acting on the material is studied and the complete governing equations will be given. Abstract:
AbstractWalther Gerlach’s numerous contributions to physics include precision measurements related to the black-body radiation (1912–1916) as well as the first-ever quantitative measurement of the radiation pressure (1923), apart from his key role in the epochal Stern-Gerlach experiment (1921–1922). His wide-ranging research programs at the Universities of Tübingen, Frankfurt, and Munich entailed spectroscopy and spectral analysis, the study of the magnetic properties of matter, and radioactivity. An important player in the physics community already in his 20s and in the German academia in his later years, Gerlach was appointed, on Werner Heisenberg’s recommendation, Plenipotentiary for nuclear research for the last sixteen months of the existence of the Third Reich. He supported the effort of the German physicists to achieve a controlled chain reaction in a uranium reactor until the last moments before the effort was halted by the Allied Alsos Mission. The reader can find additional discussion of Gerlach’s role in the supplementary material provided with the online version of the chapter on SpringerLink. After returning from his detention at Farm Hall, he redirected his boundless elan and determination to the reconstruction of German academia. Among his high-ranking appointments in the Federal Republic were the presidency of the University of Munich (1948–1951) and of the Fraunhofer Society (1948–1951) as well as the vice-presidency of the German Science Foundation (1949–1961) and the German Physical Society (1956–1957). As a member of Göttinger Achtzehn, he signed the Göttingen Declaration (1957) against arming the Bundeswehr with nuclear weapons. Having made history in physics, Gerlach became a prolific writer on the history of physics. Johannes Kepler was his favorite subject and personal hero—as both a scientist and humanist.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses zooarchaeological exploration that might be less familiar (but no less important) within the discipline's broader contribution to classical archaeology. Scientific investigations and analyses of zooarchaeological materials from classical archaeological sites have grown rapidly since the 1980s. These are broadened further through initiatives taken not simply to understand biological and environmental components of the past (aspects that might, superficially, ally better with natural science), but to engage animals as markers of cultural complexity as well. Investigations today are increasingly conducted by zooarchaeologists who specialize in the scholarship of Greek and Roman antiquity, a tactic consequently helping to blur or dissolve traditional academic boundaries in classical studies that previously emphasized primacy to other categories of material remains, such as texts or art. Scientists now infiltrate classics, and vice versa.

He links this to the way a mother introduces and reintroduces the baby’s body to its psyche and vice versa. He pays attention to those cases in which the child has a physical abnormality.

Abstract:
Given the close relationship between residential spaces and monastic identities, ‘Spaces real and imagined’ looks at the locations where monks and nuns live in community: monasteries. It first focuses on monastic archaeology, considering examples from around the world. What can material evidence tell us about monks’ and nuns’ places and modes of habitation, from architecture to agriculture, from practices of visitation to visual culture? It then examines monastic stories and art to mine the meanings that such landscapes and homescapes had for their resident populations. What did the cell, the monastery, the desert, and the forest, signify for the monastic imaginary? How have local spaces imprinted themselves on monastic pieties, and vice versa?

Abstract:
Organic matter is intrinsically related to framboids since the sulfide in sedimentary pyrite is almost wholly the result of microbial sulfate reduction by mainly heterotrophic microorganisms. However, framboids do not represent fossil bacteria. The organic matter extracted from framboids tends to take on the form of the pyrite, rather than vice versa. The exact nature of this organic material is unknown. However, it appears that microbial biofilm may be an important contributor. Likewise, the organic residues from some framboids often appear similar to sulfur-rich organic geopolymers such as protokerogen. Most of the organic matter in framboids appears to be syngenetic with the framboids, and some framboids seem to have grown in organic substrates.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a pluralistic theory of culpability. Conventionally, the ascription of blameworthiness in criminal law is thought to rest upon findings of mens rea. And it is certainly true that mens rea elements have a crucial role to play in establishing culpability. Yet how they do so remains obscure. There are many reasons for this; one of the most important is that the grounds of culpability are not unitary. The chapter argues that there are different grounds of culpability, that its material conditions differ between advertent and inadvertent wrongdoing. In so doing, the chapter contradicts the view of many writers that a necessary ingredient in grounding culpability is choice. Inadvertent negligence can reflect a moral vice on the defendant’s part and, as such, can be blameworthy.

This chapter is focused the Stoic value theory. The Stoics notoriously claim that only virtue is good, while the only vice is bad and everything else, including health, wealth, beauty and life itself, are mere indifferents. The inclusion of beauty in this list seems to show that the Stoics were not interested in theorising beauty. A thorough reading of the material shows that beauty is not treated as if it was of no interest in general; the evidence only shows that it is an inferior value to virtue. This interpretation is supported by other evidence, including the texts of later Roman Stoics, such as Epictetus. Most importantly, this interpretation shows that the Stoic value theory and aesthetics are not mutually exclusive areas of study.

Key reductionist approaches to assessing sustainability such life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle cost analysis (LCCA), and sustainability indicators are discussed in detail and applied to an engineering infrastructure scenario. The integrated sustainability methods of life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis enable a business to assess alternative products or processes at the planning and design stages. They may also be used during the production stages to assess whether a business needs to use a different raw material to make their products. The role of management, social network analysis, and mental models of individuals in the diffusion and adoption of innovations are also explored.

Abstract Global warming and climate change have been considered as major challenges over the past few decades. Sustainable and renewable energy sources are nowadays needed to overcome the undesirable consequences of rapid development in the world. Phase change materials (PCM) are substances with high latent heat storage capacity which absorb or release the heat from or to the surrounding environment. They change from solid to liquid and vice versa. PCMs could be used as a passive cooling method which enhances energy efficiency in buildings. Integrating PCM with natural ventilation is investiga

Infrared thermographic technique was employed for evaluating the temperature response in a Stainless steel grade 304 material subjected to different loading conditions such as monotonic tensile and compressive loading. In-situ temperature measurements were made from surface of the material by an infrared thermographic camera (JADE LWIR, Cedip Infrared Systems) while the material is being loaded. Cylindrical low cycle fatigue (LCF) samples were used in this study for monotonic tensile loading. Similarly, samples of aspect ratio 1.5 were used for analyzing monotonic compressive loading. Graphene is a promising material to design faster microprocessors given its exceptionally high thermal conductivity. However, due to its null electronic band gap, graphene must be combined with high-electric conductivity materials such as boron nitride to manufacture competitive alternatives to traditional semiconductors. Thus, the goal of this study is to determine the thermal conductivities and heat capacities of two-dimensional superlattices of graphene and boron nitride as a function of the secondary periodicity and interface orientation. Piezoelectric materials have the ability to provide desired transformation from mechanical to electrical energy and vice versa. When a mechanical force is applied to the piezoelectric material an electrical voltage is generated and when an electrical voltage is applied to the piezoelectric material it gets strained or mechanically deformed. Owing to these characteristics piezoelectric materials can be used as a sensor, an actuator, as well as a power generation unit. The high brittleness property of the original piezoelectric material is one of the major constraints in using them in engineerin

Abstract In regions with high intermittent renewable energy share, thermal plants are forced to operate with greater flexibility beyond their original design intent. Decreasing energy prices and capacity factors will further force these plants to more transient operation with steeper load gradients. Older steam turbine (ST) protections systems on site are often not designed for such flexible operation and do not properly supervise the resulting impact on lifetime consumption. Therefore, precise lifetime management concepts are required to increase plant reliability and flexibility, and to miti

Abstract The practice of applying strain-life relationships to model materials subjected to low cycle fatigue conditions has been widely-accepted for the past seventy years. The Coffin-Manson rule employs a double, two-parameter power law equation to correlate cycles to failure to strain range (or vice versa). Plastic strain range dominates low life, while elastic strain dominates high life. In some settings with well-established materials, copious amounts of test data are available. The median response and the Coffin-Manson parameters are determined through regression. Scatter in both strain

Due to the limitation of available experimental data for thermal conductivity of lead free solder and Intermetallic Compound (IMC) materials, the Wiedemann-Franz-Lorenz (WFL) relation is presented in this paper as a possible solution to predict thermal conductivity with known electrical conductivity. The method is based upon the fact that heat and electrical transport both involve the free electrons. The thermal and electrical conductivities of Cu, Ni, Sn, and different Sn rich lead free solder and IMC materials are studied by employing the WFL relation. Generally, the analysis to the experime
