This research project proposes a supply management model in a consumer goods company in Lima, Peru, to improve stock control and avoid raw materials stockouts and overstock. A Kraljic matrix was used to identify products based on their criticality considering material segmentation, warehouse capacity and times, and ABC segmentation to classify products on each quadrant of the matrix. This project also focuses on defining purchasing and supply strategies in each quadrant of the matrix. This model involves the development of three processes that are related to a new purchasing strategy: economic order quantity, lot-for-lot ordering, and just in time. This new system is based on a more accurate inventory because continuous improvement attracts employees’ attention and engages them in reducing the number of manual notifications made by operators every month. Moreover, after implementing the new procedure for recording inventories, the inventory record was 87% accurate, whereas, in the past, the inventory was not counted and was performed by employees of other areas.

Abstract:
The demand from modern day customers for quality products, supplied in any quantity and within a short lead-time, forces organisations to stock the correct amount of inventory in the correct locations in its supply chain. Establishing the correct inventory levels within an organisation’s supply chain is complicated by the various stochastic processes occurring in a supply chain. The thesis is aimed at the development of a generic Just-In-Time (JIT) supply chain optimisation software tool, whereby the correct inventory levels for an organisation can be determined. These inventory levels will ensure that the organisation will achieve a predefined customer service level at the minimum cost to the company. The tool was developed and satisfactory results were obtained using the Harmony Search Algorithm (HSA) for optimising the inventory levels.

The aim of this study was to observe how companies acting in fashion market measure, evaluate and emphasize their inventory in financial statements. Moreover, how they deal with the risks of its fast obsolescence. The fastest alterations in fashion tendencies; the capacity or not to anticipate, identify and answer to changes in consumers?? tastes; the interruptions in the flow of goods, that could cause breaks in the supply chain; the growing competition; the unpredictability in consume, and planning errors upon the development of new collections could be harmful for stored products waiting for its customers ??? all of them force companies to charge prices lower than their costs. The user of financial statements needs to be warned of such risks, because they could affect the existing inventory. To reach the proposed aims, the practices adopted in the main international companies of this sector were analyzed, by means of published financial statements, and compared with those adopted by Brazilian companies listed in Bovespa Stock Exchange. In addition, through interviews, it was possible to identify the treatment given to the same theme by Brazilian companies unlisted in Bovespa Stock Exchange. It was clear that international and national listed companies correctly attend to what is established in accounting standards. On the other hand, in national unlisted companies, the adoption of these practices needs development. It was also possible to verify that financial statements of American companies provide their users with more details concerning risks involving operations with goods, when compared to information provided by European and Brazilian companies.

Abstract:

Today many companies face problems with inventory management. The importance of adequate inventory management has become more evident, while organizations try to reduce their costs and increase their service level.

This master thesis was conducted at VSM Group AB in Huskvarna, which is a manufacturer that produces and delivers sewing machines to a worldwide market. VSM Group AB has problems with the management and the refilling of the work-in-process (WIP) inventories and also with lack of information about component balance and location in the production and material planning system.

Therefore, the purpose of the thesis was to improve the control of the WIP inventories and the information about the components in the production and material planning system. In order to achieve the purpose, interviews and observations were performed, theories in inventory management were reviewed and the production process was studied.

Afterwards solutions for improvements were proposed. To solve the management and refilling problem, a kanban ordering system was proposed, which would use kanban cards to order components from the storages to the WIP inventories. To develop the component information displayed in the production and material planning system, an additional feature was proposed to the system. So instead of showing one inventory balance for each component, the system would display balances for three different places in the factory: the goods arrival and quality control area, the storage and the production.

The proposed solutions can provide several benefits to the company. The kanban ordering system can increase the material handlers’ efficiency, set a standard refilling quantity and be a tool for reducing the WIP inventory levels. The more detailed information in the production and material planning system can improve the decision making for the purchasers and planners and give the ability to measure the flow and level of material inside the factory.

These solutions will provide a more appropriate inventory management to the company, with better control of the components and improved information quality.

The Largo manufacturing site of the Raytheon Company is a pure production facility with limited collocated design capabilities. All of the initial design and development engineering is done in four external sites - Marlborough, MA; St. Petersburg, FL; Towson, MD; and Ft. Wayne, IN - before final specifications are "thrown over the wall" to Largo for production. Because manufacturing is geographically sequestered there are numerous organizational and informational disconnects. Accountability is not easy with four distinct program management offices; each has equally distinct incentives and needs, and expects stellar results from the Largo production staff. Materials normally account for approximately 75% of the total costs for a standard manufacturing operation. Largo is no different; however its material costs are often even higher than this benchmark for unique reasons. Difficulties arise for Largo in structuring its supply chain agreements because the four design sites have disparate material requirements and harbor unique supplier preferences. A salient symbol of the challenges faced by the site's supply chain management group is the millions of dollars worth of inventory that sits in the vast factory storeroom. Current inventory floor accuracy is at an unacceptable level of 85.3%.
(cont.) Getting rid of the inventory monster and its attendant problems is no trivial task, and certainly not one that could be accomplished in a six month LFM internship. But steps were taken to help get the ball rolling in the right direction and to generate some quick wins in the near term. The first phase of the project involved the creation of a novel sourcing agreement with a key CCA supplier. The second phase involved optimizing the replenishment system to minimize material flow, implement pull, and increase material accountability. The final phase involved creation of a financial cost v. benefit model to standardize the site's methodology for making sourcing and partnering decisions in the future. All of these topics are discussed in this thesis as shown in the table of contents. Overview of main internship project tasks: The internship project was scoped to fit within the six and one half month allotted time period and was structured around the main problem points I have just briefly touched upon: 1. Identify optimal candidate supplier and part with potential for significant SMI cost savings. 2. Structure SMI supplier partnership agreement. 3. Implement and automate calculation of kanban system to control inventory 4. Create SMI cost v. benefit tool to prioritize future projects according to expected returns on investment.

Södra Interiör has a plant in Kallinge which manufactures flooring and panels of pine. As production has increased, inventory levels has increased. This has increased the risk that wrong raw material is used for the wrong product. The purpose of this study is to develop an approach that reduces the risk that wrong materials are used. The study shows that something must be done that ensure that correct materials are used for the right product. Stock level and information quality are other concerns identified. Key concepts to solve problems are: well organized, information, advanced planning and space. Improvement proposals are different in nature, where some improvements could be made immediately with few resources, while others take more time and require more resources. The main suggestions for improvement is about creating more space in the warehouse, clearly mark up of the timber package contents and better information quality.

Abstract:
Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) spends significant and unnecessary amounts of capital in distribution material inventory. As a government owned power utility, citizens expect to receive low cost electricity, so it is particularly important for Taipower to have a cost effective material management system (MMS). To reduce operating costs on carrying inventory, this dissertation explores literature on MMS in terms of forecasting demand, inventory control, and purchasing. And, this dissertation conducts extensive research on conventional operations research and modern computer-based material management techniques. In addition, four case studies are analyzed to determine what sort of MMS will be appropriate for Taipower's needs. The theory and practice revealed in the literature lead to a proposed MMS methodology, a hybrid of conventional and modern computer-based techniques, which can prevent the shortages and surpluses of material consuming needless amounts of capital. Finally, a simulation is offered to compare the costs of the existing and proposed material management system. The simulation results indicated that Taipower could reduce its average inventory level by 64.5% and its operating cost by 44 . 7% with the proposed material management system.

Abstract:
Purpose: The aim of the study is to investigate how the material flow, of a high-frequent component family, to an assembly line with volume and product mix variations, can be streamlined. In order to examine this, the aim has been divided into two defined queries. Which factors affect the efficiency of the material flow, for a high-frequent component family, to an assembly line?    How can an effective material flow, for a high-frequent component family, be designed? Methodology: Both a case study and a literature study has been performed, in order to answer the queries. Literature in the areas of material and inventory control, transportation and material handling has been studied. The case study, which was carried out at a company, was based on process mapping combined with interviews and observations. Collected data from the case study have been analysed with support of literature. Findings: Different factors that are restricting the efficiency of the material flow for an assembly line has been identified. Unnecessary operations and inefficient material handling resulted in high cycle times for the material flow. Furthermore, the layout and control of the inventory resulted in long lead time and unnecessary inefficient transportations. Inadequate design and integration of the logistic subsystems has shown to be a significant cause, resulting in limited effectiveness of the studied material flow. On this basis, a new design of the material flow has been proposed, where the holistic perspective and integration are central. A new inventory design and a tugger-train transportation solution along a timed route, reduce the material handling and the number of deliveries. In addition, a pull flow system where consumption controls material replenishment, reduces both inventory levels and the number of inventory buffers. Implications: The purpose of the study has been achieved by solving the defined queries. By identifying factors that reduce the effectiveness of the material flow, a more efficient solution can be designed. The study shows that there are several possible improvement opportunities for the studied material flow. However, only one case study was performed, therefore its ability to create scientific value, can be regarded as limited. Recommendations: For further studies, it may be of interest to study several companies with similar problems to be able to draw general conclusions with scientific depth.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Problems with stock control have arisen since the amalgamation of the four local governments in the Helderberg Basin. Management and control of stock are important as stock is considered as cash. It is therefore necessary that local governments pay attention to the continuous upgrading of existing systems for the purchase and storage of stock as well as the control of it and the facilities. The purpose of stock control is to ensure that the existing stock levels are sufficient to enable the local government to execute its functions effectively. This study points out that problems experienced are minimised and could even be eliminated by applying the JIT (Just-in-Time) principle. Statistics have shown that the JIT principle could be applied with great success within the Helderberg Municipality and that approximately R4,36m could be available for alternative application. For the Helderberg Administration JIT could mean minimising excess stock in such a way that mostly stock items with re-order times of eight weeks will have to be kept in stock. * Since 5 December 2000 the Helderberg Municipality is included in the City of Cape Town and is now known as Helderberg Administation.

Abstract:
The overall objective of this study is to analyze asset tracking of permanent property belonging to UTFPR, in all of its 13 campuses, as an Public Governance tool. The specific objectives were: to understand the principles of Public Administration and principles of Public Governance; describe the procedures, technologies and resources employed in asset tracking at UTFPR; attest that the principles of Public Governance through asset tracking at UTFPR have been observed; and lastly, propose solutions to improve the activity of asset tracking at UTFPR based on the principles of accountability and transparency of Public Governance. Because they are intended to meet a collective interest, public resources must be administered so as to maximize the benefits to the collectivity, abiding by the principles of legality, impersonality, morality, disclosure and efficiency. Internal and external control mechanisms have been implemented to prevent administrative acts from straying from this ideal. Asset tracking is a type of internal control that makes it possible to maintain updated information on permanent public assets, such as information on acquisition, asset record keeping and records on asset write-offs. To meet the objectives of the study, it was decided upon the qualitative research study method using the case study technique. A total of 21 servants were identified as responsible for asset tracking at the 13 UTFPR campuses. Another three servants were identified as contributing to the activity of asset tracking. The study used surveys, documental analysis, and analysis of technological devices. Content analysis was used as the method to examine collected materials. It was demonstrated that permanent asset tracking at UTFPR is currently not an efficient tool of Public Governance, considering the non-existence of transparency with regard to asset tracking. Likewise, the fulfillment of the principle of compliance has been compromised, as analytical data are not provided regarding the goods that comprise the assets of UTFPR. Moreover, the information provided in shortened format in management reports does not reflect reality, considering that inventories are not carried out in some campuses. In order to overcome these challenges, proposals include training, creation of norms regarding asset tracking, studies on the possibility of adopting new technologies, and effectively performing inventories in the campuses.

Material backorder (or stockout) is a common supply chain problem, impacting the inventory system service level and effectiveness. Identifying materials with the highest chances of shortage prior its occurrence can present a high opportunity to improve the overall company’s performance. However, the complexity of this sort of problem is high, due to class imbalance between missing items and not missing ones in inventory, which can achieve proportions of 1 to 100. In this work, machine learning classifiers are investigated in order to fulfill this gap in literature. Specific metrics such as area under the Receiver Operator Characteristic and precision-recall curves, sampling techniques and ensemble learning are employed to this particular task. The proposed model was tested in two real case-studies, in which it was verified that the use of the tool may contribute with the improvemnet of the service level in the supply chain.

Abstract:
Within manufacturing industries, capital is tied up in machines, tools and inventory of unprocessed raw materials as well as finished goods and everything in between, also known as work in progress. Naturally, firms strive to minimize the capital employed in these items and thus facilitate a leaner operation. At the same time, it is important to maintain a stable and uninterrupted production. A prerequisite for maintaining a stable production is that the inputs of the production processes are available at all times. Machining tools need to always be available and easily accessible in order to minimize machine downtime in between batch orders, and if a machine breaks down, the necessary spare parts must be provided quickly. This study has been performed in order to investigate when it would be beneficial for a manufacturer of heavy vehicles to achieve a consumption-driven system for ordering machining tools. More specifically, it looks into the prerequisites and the potential benefits of such a system. This research has been done by conducting a case study at Scania Transmission Machining in Södertälje, Sweden, which is the department responsible for manufacturing conical gears and gear transmission components for Scania’s European production. The case study included a diagnosis of the current inventory control situation, which served the purpose of identifying weaknesses in the system and potential areas of improvement. Furthermore, simulations were conducted based on historical transaction data from the storage unit which supplies tools for the case company. This was done in order to investigate how a consumption-driven inventory control system may be set up in practice and to provide figures on potential monetary gains as well as other benefits. The findings from this study indicate that there are many incentives for Scania Transmission Machining to adopt and implement an inventory control system for machining tools which is based on the consumption. First off, the diagnosis of the current inventory control system revealed several weaknesses and inefficiencies in the system. Furthermore, simulating the inventory levels for a sample of tools showed improvements in terms of the number of days of shortage and in a lower average inventory level. Finally, the monetary savings have been estimated to amount to roughly 1 million SEK per year.

TCG is a multinational pharmaceutical company. As part of its drive to adopt lean manufacturing methodology in the plant and to stay competitive in the industry, TCG plans to effectively maximize its capital assets and reduce the warehouse space from 3500 to 1500 pallet spaces. This thesis focuses on the raw materials procurement and ordering methods in TCG. We study the accuracy of the demand forecasts for the finished products. And we investigate methods to improve procurement and inventory control. We use a 2-factor classification method to rank the 38 types of raw materials in the warehouse in terms of their importance based on their past procurement costs and the amount of warehouse space they occupied. We propose a just-in-time approach for the 9 most important items by having timely orders that match closely to the production schedule. A continuous review model is used for the next 11 items of less importance and a periodic review model is used for the remaining 18 items, which are of the least importance. We discuss and justify the assumptions used in our analysis. We provide a few further recommendations on how to improve inventory control based on observations of the current practices. The overall result shows that it might be possible to reduce the amount of space occupied by raw materials from the current average of 1076 pallets by 72%.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a teaching job shop control system for running in assembly laboratories at colleges and universities in preparing Industrial Engineering students for challenges faced in real-world factories. Current techniques fail to encompass this idea of training for students like the proposed method does. Microsoft Access was used in creating a database that is the center point in this new system. Inventory is managed using this database system and added if parts are created in the manufacturing lab and moved to the assembly area. The system will stop if parts are low until new parts are created. In this new system, a pallet with an unfinished product on it moves down a conveyor system until it reaches the next workstation. At this station, the station operator scans a barcode on the pallet. This barcode contains what product is on this pallet. Based on this information, an ordered list of tasks appears on the workstation computer screen and must be done before the pallet can be moved on. When all tasks have been completed at a station, the station operator clicks ?done? on the screen and then can either move to the next pallet or end the run. Statistics are kept on the quality of the final products and parts as well as a work-in-process and on a goal percentage of good products out at the end of a one-hour time frame. Administrators will be able to assign tasks and parts to products and stations, as well as be able assign the goal ahead of time.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies inventory control with risk of major supply chain disruptions, specifically border closures and congestion. We first investigate an inventory system in which the probability distributions of order leadtimes are dependent on the state of an exogenous Markov process; we will model border disruptions via this exogenous process. We consider stationary, state-dependent basestock policies, which are known to be optimal for the system under study, and develop an expression for the long-run average cost of an arbitrary policy of this form. Restricting our attention to state-invariant basestock policies, we show how to calculate the optimal basestock (or order-up-to) level and long-run average cost. We provide a sufficient condition for the optimality of a state-invariant basestock policy and monotonicity results for the optimal state-invariant order-up-to level. We finally give the optimal state-invariant order-up-to level for a special class of supply states. Motivated by the possibility of port of entry closures in the event of a security incident, we specialize the previous model to a two-stage international supply chain. A domestic manufacturer orders a single product from a foreign supplier and the orders must cross an international border that is subject to closure. We first assume that border congestion is negligible. The manufacturer's optimal inventory policy and long-run average cost are analyzed. We present structural policy results and the results of a comprehensive numerical study that have important implications for business and for the cooperation between business and government in disruption management and contingency planning. Finally we extend the border closure model to include both border closures and the resulting congestion. We model the border processing system as a discrete-time, single-server queue with constant arrival rate and Markov-modulated service rate. A key task is the development of the leadtime distribution, which is more complex than in the previous model. We present the results of a comprehensive numerical study and provide managerial insights.

Abstract:
In this paper we first show that the gains achievable by integrating pricing and inventory control are usually small for classical demand functions. We then introduce reference price models and demonstrate that for this class of demand functions the benefits of integration with inventory control are substantially increased due to the price dynamics. We also provide some analytical results for this more complex model. We thus conclude that integrated pricing/inventory models could repeat the success of revenue management in practice if reference price effects are included in the demand model and the properties of this new model are better understood. Abstract:
In this study, we consider a logistics system, in which a single supplier delivers a product to multiple retailers over a finite time horizon. Supplier decides on the amount to order in each period and services retailers facing deterministic dynamic demand via a fleet of vehicles having limited capacity. Each retailer has specific minimum and maximum levels of inventory in an order-up-to level inventory policy setting. The problem is to simultaneously determine the quantity of product to order to the supplier, retailers to be visited, the quantity of product to be delivered to retailers and routes of vehicles in each period so as to minimize system-wide costs. We present a mathematical formulation for the problem, for which we develop several Lagrangian relaxation based solution procedures providing both upper and lower bounds to the problem. We implement these solution procedures on test instances and present the results. Computational study shows that our solution procedures generate good feasible solutions in reasonable time.

Abstract:
In this master thesis study, new inventory control mechanisms are developed for the repairables in Nedtrain. There is a multi-item, multi echelon system with a continuous review and one for one replenishment policy and there are different demand supply options in each control mechanism. There is an aggregate mean waiting time constraint in each local warehouse and the objective is to minimize the total system cost. The base stock levels in each warehouse are determined with an approximation method. Then different demand supply options are compared with each other.
