Abstract:
In view of the worsening experienced by Spain, in recent years, both globally and in Europe , in relation to levels of corruption, in this paper we try to dismantle the idea, still present in some sectors of society, that corruption is an exclusive phenomenon of democratic systems and political pluralism, highlighting the network of corruption that allowed the Franco dictatorship, during which said blight became a widespread social practice, a structural element protected by power and protected by the lack of freedom of expression and communication. We will dwell especially on the fraud carried out by the company MATESA, as well as on the political background that was implicit and that led to a strong government crisis, analyzing it from an original perspective. We will study both the dimensions of fraud, and the media scandal it provoked, as well as the political crisis that resulted from the perspective of the non-collaborationist Christian Democrats, who used this issue to record, through the pages of the Journal Cuadernos for the Dialogue, of the corruption in which the System was based, of the power struggles that confronted the different families of the Regime at the height of 1969, of their position in this respect, as well as of their proposals and alternatives.

Abstract:
AbstractIn a field experiment we show that female pied flycatchers, Ficedula hypoleuca, can learn male song quickly. Of the 16 females that responded to playback of mate's song and stranger's song, 13 responded only, or approached sooner and stayed longer in response to the song of their own mate. Of these females 11 females responded solely to their own mate's song. The number of days the females had been mated had no effect on their response (range 1 to 7 days, median 3). The result may be explained as females recognizing their mates' song or that they responded to familiar songs. In a second set of experiments, we therefore tested females with a neighbour's song and a stranger's song, broadcasting the neighbour's song either from the direction where he usually sang or from the opposite direction. Only 8 of 19 females responded to playback; when the song was broadcasted from the direction where the male usually sang, none of the females responded, while 8 of 12 females responded by approaching and staying near the speaker during the trials when the song was broadcasted from the opposite direction. Thus, female pied flycatchers show individual recognition of male neighbours as has been shown in males of some other species. We therefore infer that the strong response to mates' song may also indicate individual recognition. It could be advantageous for females to respond to both mates and to neighbours but for different reasons, i.e. mate defence and territory defence, respectively.

Abstract:
AbstractSome researchers have suggested that female songbirds mate with males singing local song types in preference to males singing dialects from more distant populations. Such behaviour might promote genetic isolation among dialect populations. We studied captive female white-crowned sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys) from a population in which two song types were equally common, as a model for behaviour at dialect boundaries. Subjects were captured as adults, and the song type of the mate of each was known. Treated with estradiol, females gave sexual displays in response to playback of conspecific male song. As a group, they solicited no more strongly to either local song type, suggesting that males singing either local song type should be able to attract mates. Individuals solicited no more strongly to their mate's song type than to the other local song type. This suggests that strength of response of captive females to song playback may not accurately reflect the behaviour of free-living individuals. Subjects were also treated with testosterone to induce singing. Individuals sang their mates' song type more often than expected by chance. Given that female white-crowned sparrows in this population do not consistently choose mates of one song type, we develop the argument that females learn, for performance, the song type of their first mate. However, the type of song learned for performance appears unlikely to restrict their subsequent mate choice decisions. Our results suggest that female white-crowned sparrows do not base their choice of mates on dialectal variation in male song, and that it is unlikely that mate choice decisions based on song dialect promote the genetic isolation of dialect populations.

Abstract:
This research used an individual differences approach to test Eagly and Wood's (1999) claim that sex differences in the characteristics that people prefer in mates reflect the tendency for men and women to occupy different social roles in a society. The study related the extent to which participants endorsed the traditional female gender role to their preferences for their future mate's traits and age relative to their own age. In general, the sex-differentiated preferences that are consistent with the traditional division of labor were more pronounced, especially in male participants, to the extent that they endorsed the traditional female role.

Abstract:
Some research suggests that the reason men and women choose mates who are physically similar to them, is because though they may be genetically similar (given the physical characteristics), the fact that there is no kinship allows for genetic stability. Some researchers believe this is a product of evolutionary forces, therefore allowing possible mates to find those whom they would see as compatible and fertile. Researchers have found that as children we imprint our parent’s facial features, which helps develop the normal facial recognition later. With this knowledge it is suggested that we subconsciously use our parent’s facial imprint as our standard for beauty when it comes to finding a mate. As children share a resemblance to their parents, it is not unlikely that as adults, men and women then choose mates who are physically similar to themselves. The current study examined whether men and women look for mates who are physically similar, even if they do not realize it. This study looked at a range of physical characteristics from hair color to height to body type. The wide range of physical characteristics allowed participants to be very specific about the ideal physical features they desire in a mate. It also allowed participants to be specific about their own physical characteristics. The survey was distributed through an online link that was distributed by upper and lower level sociology professors as well as social media sites. The results of this study are important because most research on heterosexual relationships focus on what characteristics each partner are looking to find. However, there is very little research on the phenomena of heterosexual partners choosing a mate who are physically similar.

Abstract:
With thoughts from philosophers such as Montessori, Plato and Baudrillard this thesis has dealt with questions regarding the significance of computers for the graphic artist. The problem, or the question at issue, developed over time into: “What would be the digital equivalent to matter?” The research resulted in a theory of how matter could be born inside a computer: by combing two separate forms of data, just like a new organism is created with the combination of genetic codes. During the production phase a method for how a graphic artist could work with the computer rather than at the computer was established. The purpose of this method is to broaden the graphic artist’s view on digital graphics.

The current paper highlights the different realities that influence the construction of the tics of mathema that emerge during the math classes at a public school of São Paulo, located in Sao Jose do Rio Preto. Being characterized as a qualitative research and due the ethnographic connotation, the methodology adopted can be seen as a reference, as a parameter validation, as method that works illuminating the way, and even as a generative test and as a strategy for and from thinking about the subject and data search. From the comparison between theory and practice, this research verifies the elements that support the construction of knowledge by students. It also shows the difficulties arising from different levels of reality and different levels of perception within the classroom, due the complexities that exist in this process. It indicates that individuals bring elements of their cultural heritage to the process of acquiring knowledge, which fundamentally influences how they perceive the reality. The study reveals that the teacher brings a knowledge that is seen as very different and inherent from mathematics – the disciplinary knowledge – and most of the students interviewed see no relation between mathematics (the scholar one) and their day-to-day activities. The research exhibits also that students use the notion of transdisciplinary to construct their knowledge. In this sense, the dialogue, the socio-cultural knowledge of students and their expectations about math must be considered. Finally, we must bring the ludic element to this process as a positive factor for the construction of knowledge

Abstract:
In the southern apennines, the matese mountain is a limestone recently uplifted block, which arises upto 2000 meters high. As the other parts of the chain, it was included in the neogene thrust belt, but the harsh external walls of the matese are due to the neotectonic quaternary faulting. Between these two events, an erosion topography appeared, with small rivers, probably below a primary miletto mount, which was yet, and is now, the higher point of the matese. This erosion topography was cut by the huge faulting, and the inner part of the matese is now a sequence of basins and ranges. In the mediterranean, the matese is strongly original because of its altitude, near the tyrrhenian sea. During the weichselian period, small glaciers existed at 1500 m, near the miletto (2050 m) and gallinola (1923 m) mounts, due to an extreme snow input. Now, the summer mediterranean aridity is reduced because of a relatively important humidity, which allows the spreading of a dense beech wood

McGauley, P. C. "Matera 1945-1960 : the history of a 'national shame'." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1430281/.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how and why the southern Italian city of Matera came to be seen as a national shame and symbol of the southern question in the post-war period. Moreover, it traces the impact that these narratives had on the city’s social and urban history from 1945 to 1960. It draws on methods from the history of nationalism, the history of emotions, the new southern history, and urban history to achieve these aims. A range of primary and secondary sources are examined including documents from the Italian State Archives in Rome and Matera, the US National Archive in Maryland, Italian newspapers and magazines, parliamentary documents and debates, and official newsreel and documentary footage. The first chapter analyses the image of Matera as Other and a symbol of southern Italy’s civiltà contadina featured in Carlo Levi’s post-war bestseller Cristo si è fermato a Eboli. It also assesses the book’s impact in shaping ideas of Matera amongst Italy’s post-war public sphere. The second chapter looks at how and why Matera came to be seen as a national shame in the immediate post-war period. It examines the distinct catholic and communist moral worlds which shaped this notion in a Cold War context. The third chapter investigates the implementation of the first special law for Matera. It assesses the project’s limitations and critiques the existing secondary literature on this topic. Finally, the fourth chapter is a case study of the purpose-built rural village La Martella. It examines how and why Matera and La Martella were used in government propaganda to promote official reforms in southern Italy. The thesis concludes that narratives of national shame and the southern question directly shaped Matera’s urban and social topography post-1945.

Abstract:
AbstractFinitary Idealized Concurrent Algol ($$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA ) is a prototypical programming language combining functional, imperative, and concurrent computation. There exists a fully abstract game model of $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA , which in principle can be used to prove equivalence and safety of $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA programs. Unfortunately, the problems are undecidable for the whole language, and only very rudimentary decidable sub-languages are known. We propose leafy automata as a dedicated automata-theoretic formalism for representing the game semantics of $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA . The automata use an infinite alphabet with a tree structure. We show that the game semantics of any $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA term can be represented by traces of a leafy automaton. Conversely, the traces of any leafy automaton can be represented by a $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA term. Because of the close match with $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA , we view leafy automata as a promising starting point for finding decidable subclasses of the language and, more generally, to provide a new perspective on models of higher-order concurrent computation. Moreover, we identify a fragment of $$\mathsf {FICA}$$ FICA that is amenable to verification by translation into a particular class of leafy automata. Using a locality property of the latter class, where communication between levels is restricted and every other level is bounded, we show that their emptiness problem is decidable by reduction to Petri net reachability.

Abstract:
In this paper, we present an experimental study of gregarious fish collective behavior in the presence or absence of biomimetic vehicles. This study is aimed at developing a first understanding of fish shoal controllability using robotic exogenous mates. Macroscopic features of the group schooling are identified through laboratory experiments, conducted in a controlled environment. Experimental evidence proves the existence of qualitatively different shoal collective responses to the exogenous mate. We adapt global observables from statistical mechanics to capture the main features of the shoal collective motion, and identify possible distinct states of aggregation. Further, we investigate the effect of the exogenous mate on the shoal by using a diffusion mapping analysis performed on the global observables. The analysis shows that the exogenous mate is able to exert organizing control actions on the schooling behavior that generally result into a higher cohesion for the shoal.

Abstract:
Maths inside is a photo competition open to everyone living in Scotland, hosted by the University of Glasgow. The maths inside project seeks to nourish a love for mathematics by embarking on a journey of discovery through a creative lens. This suite of resources have been created to inspire entrants, and support families, teachers and those out-of-school to make deeper connections with their surroundings. The maths inside is waiting to be discovered! Also contained in the suite is an example to inspire and support you to design your own interdisciplinary learning (IDL) activity matched to Education Scotland experiences and outcomes (Es+Os), to lead pupils towards the creation of their own entry. These resources are not prescriptive, and are designed with a strong creativity ethos for them to be adapted and delivered in a manner that meets the specific needs of those participating. The competition and the activities can be tailored to meet all and each learners' needs. We recommend that those engaging with maths inside for the first time complete their own mapping exercise linking the designed activity to the Es+Os. To create a collaborative resource bank open to everyone, we invite you to treat these resources as a working document for entrants, parents, carers, teachers and schools to make their own. Please share your tips, ideas and activities at info@mathsinside.com and through our social media channels. Past winning entries of the competition are also available for inspiration and for using as a teaching resource. Already inspired? Enter the competition!
