Abstract:
Research has been conducted by Mönnig (1967), Lewis (1976) and the Worlddbook Encyclopaedia (2000) regarding the Bapedi traditional marriage system. However, although all three research projects focus on the Bapedi marriage system, none describes the stages of the marriage that are expected in the Sepedi marriage system. Nor do they mention the final stage of the system, known as ‘go beka’. The current study therefore focuses on this practice within the marriage system, with special reference to the Matlala tribe residing in the area of Moutse in the Limpopo Province, which is one of the provinces in South Africa. The research explores the conventions of the Matlala ethnic group, which is sub-divided into different small villages each falling under its own traditional leader. The analysis finds that the traditional marriage system of the Matlala tribe, unlike that of other ethnic groups, has stages within the marriage system that are different from the others including Bapedi tribes in general. The main difference in the traditional marriage system is founded on the fulfilment of the final stage called ‘go beka’ which, if not performed, would mean that the traditional marriage process is not yet complete. This process has not yet been explained in detail in the Sepedi literatures. That is why the present study maintains that, because the earlier research has not taken the ‘go beka’ stage into consideration in spite of the fact that this stage is significant in the traditional marriage process of the Bapedi, it is important to examine the practice. Therefore, the stage of ‘go beka’ has been elaborated on in detail in the research on the ‘Bapedi ba Matlala’ in Moutse. This thesis focuses on the differece between the marriage system itself and the final stage in the marriage system as well as other aspects connected with the Matlala traditional marriage system in general. In addition, this research describes how the stages of traditional marriage are given effect in the traditional marriage system of the Bapedi, with reference to the Matlala tribe of Moutse. The main aims of this thesis have been (a) to examine how, in general, the stages of marriage system are intertwined when compared with the main concept of the Sepedi marriage system, with special reference to that of the Matlala tribe in the area of Moutse; and (b) to analyse the usage of language, types of developmental incidents including (c) poems, traditional dances and songs used during these types of ceremonies.

Abstract:

The number of diabetic patients will continue to rise even in rural settings and the burden of this disease will continue to take its effect on the limited resources of these communities. The effect of such burden will be more pronounced if we are to add the various complications associated with substandard management of diabetes mellitus. The first step in assessing the level of care we give to this category of patients is to measure their level of adherence, in an effort to expose the pitfalls on both the side of the patients and on the side of the health care provider. The aim of the study is to assess the level of adherence to treatment among type2 diabetic patients in Matlala district hospital; Limpopo Province. This cross-sectional study used the convenience method of sampling with the aid of a tested, structured questionnaire, to obtain data from respondents between December 2009 and March 2010, a period of 4 months. The excel computer program was used for data capturing. Percentages and numbers were used for interpretation and cross tabulation was used to determine association. The result of the study indicated that 137 {70%} of the respondents adhere to diabetes treatment. There were two demographical characteristics that are significantly associated with non adherence: age {p=0.028} and employment status {p=0.018}. Of those respondents that keep their appointments, 98% are adherent to treatment. When considering reasons for poor adherence; 29% of respondents stated that the clinic did not have their pills, 16% stated that they forgot to take their medication and 14% stated that they travelled to visit ix and did not take enough pills with them. On the reasons for poor adherence to lifestyle: 29% of the respondents said that they were too old, 22% stated no specific reason, 13% struggled to motivate themselves and 10% simply forgot what to do. Most, 68%, of the respondents that adhere to the recommended use of medication agreed that they take it at meal time, 14% set a reminder, 8% employed the assistance of a treatment supporter and other respondents used other means to remember. The study revealed an above average level of adherence in my setting and it will be logical to assess whether this corresponds to the metabolic control expected of good adherence. More is needed to be done on the reasons why our patients do not adhere to both medication and lifestyle changes and each stake holder needs to address their short comings.

Abstract:
In a semi-arid country like South Africa, the availability and quality of water has always played an important part in determining not only where people can live, but also their quality of life. The supply of water is also becoming a restriction to the socio-economic development of the country, in terms of both the quality and quantity of what is available. Thus different monitoring techniques should be put in place to help inform the process of conserving this precious commodity and to improve the quality of what is already available. Water quality monitoring has traditionally been by the means of physico-chemical analysis; this has more recently been augmented with the use of biomonitoring techniques. However, since the biota commonly used to indicate aquatic conditions are not always present in wetlands; this study tested the use of diatoms as bio-indicators in wetlands. Diatom samples were collected from thirteen wetlands in the Western Cape Province, and cells from these communities were enumerated and diatom ?based indices were calculated using version 3.1 of OMNIDIA. These indices were useful for indicating water quality conditions when compared to the measured physico-chemical parameters. In addition, most diatom species found were common to those found in riverine environments, making the transfer of ecological optima possible. The objective of the study was to provide a preliminary diatom-based index for wetlands, however, given the relatively small study area and the strong bias towards coastal wetlands it was deemed inadvisable to construct such an index, instead several indices are recommended for interim use until further research that more comprehensively covers wetlands in South Africa has been conducted. It is thus the recommendation of this study that more data is collected for comparison to other wetlands and that in the interim, indices such as SPI be applied for routine biomonitoring of these environments.

Abstract:
Thesis ( M Med( Family Medicine ))--University of Limpopo, 2010.
Tuberculosis (TB) is a major health problem in South Africa especially in this era of high prevalence of human immune deficiency virus (HIV) infection. South Africa is currently ranked fourth among the twenty-two high burden countries worldwide with an incidence of 940/100 000 population/year and mortality of 218/100 000 population/year. The notational tuberculosis control programme NTCP) was established in response to this growing burden. The aim of this study is to evaluate the TB programme at Matlala District hospital and to make recommendations that could improve its effectiveness. The study was a descriptive cross-sectional study. Retrospective data of all adults ≥15yrs diagnosed with pulmonary TB (PTB) were collated from the TB register and patients’ records between 01/01/2008 and 31/12/2008. Children <15years and extra-pulmonary TB were excluded because of the challenges in diagnosis. Follow-up was done until end of treatment to determine the outcome. The outcomes were cured, completed treatment, failed treatment, died, defaulted treatment, transferred out and not evaluated based on the NTCP criteria.A total of 482 patients (266 females and 216 males) were included in the study with a median age 40.91 (standard deviation (SD) 14.65; 95% CI 39.59-42.22). Women with mean age 38.35 years (SD 15.03; 95% CI 36.54-40.16) were significantly younger (P value <0.00001) than men with mean age 44.05 (SD 13.55; 95% CI 42.23-45.87). There were 399 (82.78%) new cases and 83 (17.22%) re-treatment cases. 130 (26.97%) patients were co-infected with HIV while 236 (48.96%) patients did not know their status. In all, 193 (40%) were cured, 63 (13.07%) completed treatment, 4 (0.83%) failed treatment, 43 (8.92%) died, 27 (5.60%) defaulted, 141 (29.25%) were transferred out and 11 (2.28%) were not evaluated. The treatment success rate was 53.11%. The treatment success rate in this study is well below the 85% target in the NTCP. A large number of the patients did not know their status and the outcome could not be determined in significant number of patients (not evaluated and transferred out). A systematic referral and recording process; and a collaborative effort between TB and HIV services is therefore necessary to face this challenge. It may also be important to re-open the TB ward to prevent nosocomial transmission.

Abstract:
MATLAB is a dynamic scientific language used by scientists, engineers and students worldwide. Although MATLAB is very suitable for rapid prototyping and development, MATLAB users often want to convert their final MATLAB programs to a static language such as FORTRAN, to integrate them into already existing programs of that language, to leverage the performance of powerful static compilers, or to ease the distribution of executables. This thesis presents an extensible object-oriented toolkit to help facilitate the generation of static programs from dynamic MATLAB programs. Our open source toolkit, called the MATLAB Tamer, targets a large subset of MATLAB. Given information about the entry point of the program, the MATLAB Tamer builds a complete callgraph, transforms every function into a reduced intermediate representation, and provides typing information to aid the generation of static code. In order to provide this functionality, we need to handle a large number of MATLAB builtin functions. Part of the Tamer framework is the builtin framework, an extensible toolkit which provides a principled approach to handle a large number of builtin functions. To build the callgraph, we provide an interprocedural analysis framework, which can be used to implement full-program analyses. Using this interprocedural framework, we have developed value analysis, an extensible interprocedural analysis to estimate MATLAB types, which helps discover the call edges needed to build the call graph. In order to make the static analyses even possible, we disallow a small number of MATLAB constructs and features, but attempt to support as large a subset of MATLAB as possible. Thus, by both slightly restricting MATLAB, and by providing a framework with powerful analyses and simplifying transformations, we can "Tame MATLAB".

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis in the course PPU305 Product development-construction is to develop a concept of a new lunchbox on a mission from the company Millcroft. The aim was also to write this thesis and answering the research questions. To answer the question “What material should be used that can handle heat, which is not toxic, but can easily be formed and give a feeling of quality?” by making a material selection in CES-Edupack there were three types of material been selected for the various parts in the lunchbox after material-requirement was made. “What needs do the users of lunchboxes see that is unmet in the lunchboxes on the market?” To answer this question a questionnaire was made in an early stage of the product development process. This was made to see what the potential customers had in mind when it comes to lunchboxes, to implement in the concept generating phase. “What would a new lunchbox-design look like, that care to remove some problems that users see in lunchboxes on the market?” This question was answered by concept generation and a Pugs matrix that lead the way to remove some of the concepts and help to combine and continue develop other concepts. The final concept was verified by a conceptual test with a group of people. There was also established the size of the lunchbox. The form of the lunchbox was generated by requests from the questionnaire that the lunchbox should hold tight. By having a cylindrical face, the lunchbox can have a threaded lid that would help to keep it tight from leaking. The thought was also that the lunchbox by its shape would stick out from other lunchboxes on the market. The result of this work is a concept of a multifunctional lunchbox in two sections. It contains two cans, a pair of inserts where you can put salad, sauce or what you prefer, two lids that fits on the two cans. It`s two lids because of the injection angle. This lunchbox even has a cooling plate that can be fit on the second can. There was a wish to bring cutlery so that was also kept in mind and result in a cutlery case.  The conclusion of this work is that it`s important to plan the work and prepare for any problems along the way so that there is time to fix them. The work went well and it was good to use a Agil mode of work so that each phase tuned off and any improvements could be made smoothly. Recommendations for further development are to find a manufacturer of a suitable cooling gel.
