The absence of sunlight during the winter in the High Arctic results in a strong surface-based atmospheric temperature inversion, especially during clear skies and light surface wind conditions. The inversion suppresses turbulent heat transfer between the ground and the boundary layer. As a result, the difference between the surface air temperature, measured at a height of 2 m, and the ground skin temperature can exceed several degrees Celsius. Such inversions occur very frequently in polar regions, are of interest to understand the mechanisms responsible for surface–atmosphere heat,

Matrine derivatives were reported to have various biological activities, especially the ester, amide or sulfonamide derivatives of matrine deriving from the hydroxyl or carboxyl group at the end of the branch chain after the D ring of matrine is opened. In this work, to investigate whether moving away all functional groups from the C-11 branch chain could have an impact on the bioactivities, such as anti-tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), insecticidal and fungicidal activities, a variety of N-substituted-11-butyl matrine derivatives were synthesized. Accurate estimation of soil moisture content (SMC) is crucial for effective water management, enabling improved monitoring of water stress and a deeper understanding of hydrological processes. While satellite remote sensing provides broad coverage, its spatial resolution often limits its ability to capture small-scale variations in SMC, especially in landscapes with diverse land-cover types. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with hyperspectral sensors offer a promising solution to overcome this limitation. A relationship describing the shear-strength profile of a desiccating soil deposit is essential for the purpose of analysis, especially when a numerical method is adopted where each zone in a discretised grid is assigned an elevation-dependent shear-strength value. The matric-suction profile of a desiccating soil deposit is nonlinear. Up to the air-entry value, an increase in matric suction is associated with a linear increase in shear strength. Beyond air entry, as the soil starts to desaturate, a nonlinear increase in shear strength occurs. The soil-water characteristic curve is stress depen

Matrix comparison tests (i.e., Mantel's test or quadratic assignment) are employed with increasing frequency to measure the concordance between genetic, behavioural, morphological, ecological, and geographic distances. Such tests compare an observed measure of matrix association with a null distribution derived from a randomly generated subset of all possible permutations of one of the original matrices. Typically, 500–2000 randomly permutated matrices are used to generate the statistical distribution and thereby estimate the probability of obtaining an observed association between two matrice
