Background In the wild, matrinchã (Brycon amazonicus) and tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) rely strongly on their swimming capacity to perform feeding, migration and reproductive activities. Sustained swimming speed in fishes is performed almost exclusively by aerobic red muscles. The white muscle has high contraction power, but fatigue quickly, being used mainly in sprints and bursts, with a maximum duration of few seconds. Foi estudado o crescimento de matrinchã (Brycon sp.) e jaraqui (Semaprochilodus sp.) em sistema de policultivo em duas pequenas represas de igarapés de terra firme, nos arredores de Manaus, com superfícies de água de aproximadamente 6500 e 1500 m2 . As represas foram povoadas com alevinos capturados na natureza numa taxa de esfocagem de aproximadanente 0,4 - 0,5 peixe/m2 para cada espécie. Senna reticulata (Willd.) H. S. Irwin & Barneby é uma planta arbórea pioneira em áreas abertas de planícies aluviais da Amazônia e frequentemente usada como planta medicinal. The present work aims to update a series of information about the regional fishing production, by presenting and characterizing the contribution of the different sub-systems of the Amazon basin to the catch landed at the main fishing market of Manaus, Brazil, from 1994 to 1996. O estudo consiste em avaliar os níveis de mercúrio no pescado consumido pela comunidade indígena de Sai Cinza (Reserva Munduruku) no Estado do Pará, e associá-los com os hábitos de consumo da população. Um total de oitenta espécimes de peixes foram capturados. As determinações de Hg foram realizadas por absorção atômica. A concentração média de Hg nas espécies carnívoras foi de 0,293 µg/g (DP = 0,104) enquanto nas não carnívoras foi de 0,112 µg/g (DP = 0,036). O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a interação entre os efeitos do treinamento físico e da quantidade de proteína na dieta sobre a hematologia; a composição corpórea de proteínas, lipídeos e cinzas; o consumo alimentar, o ganho de massa e fator de conversão; o desempenho natatório e a resistência ao estresse causado pela hipóxia em exemplares de matrinchã. Aproximadamente 2500 alevinos de matrinchã com comprimento padrão de 0,8 a 5,0cm foram coletados no lago Catalão, margem direita do rio Negro e no rio Solimões, próximo a ilha da Marchantaria, Estado do Amazonas. Uma subamostra de 136 peixes foi retirada para exames parasitológicos e o restante foi colocado em tanques em uma estação de piscicultura, durante 30 dias. Após esse período uma segunda amostra foi retirada e examinada.
