Тhe complexity of the business environment leads to its stratification for research purposes in three levels: the industry as a whole, strategic groups, and individual firms. This chapter concentrates on the middle-ground level, the strategic group. The analysis of strategic groups helps companies find a better position for their business on the market. By now, various techniques have been created to identify companies comprising a strategic group. Presented here are some of the most commonly used tools: the K-mean cluster analysis, the strategic profile of an industry, and the strategic themes matrix. To some degree, the usage of these methods is costly and thus problematic, especially for smaller companies. For this reason, the authors have developed an alternative tool, the “Profitability-Turnover Matrix Model” (PTMM). The technique is based on objective and freely available information. The focus is placed on the possibility of using the PTMM by entrepreneurial mid-sized companies.

Abstract:
Climate change, resource depletion, technical progress, growing consumer awareness and changing requirements causes companies to look for new production methods. They may concern various areas of the company’s activity, starting from product design, procurement organization, optimization of production processes, control of manufactured products and services, through improvement of work organization and reduction of production costs, and ending with the implementation of modern solutions based on digital technologies. The purpose of implementing new production methods is to improve labour mobility, optimization of the use of raw materials and resources, costs reduction, increase efficiency, productivity, etc. In the literature, there are many different types of methods that can be used by modern enterprises. It is practically impossible to present all methods in this study. The authors focused on the presentation of selected methods, which are characterized on the one hand by innovation and, on the other hand, by the possibility of implementation. Particular attention should be paid to methods focused on environmental aspects. This group presents basic information on environment-conscious manufacturing (ECM), life-cycle assessment (LCA) and waste management and recycling. These methods allow to implement the concept of sustainable development and are directly related to the 17 goals set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and adopted by UN member states. In the group of methods related to next generation production management, the focus was on Matrix shop floor control and cooperative manufacturing. Of particular importance is cooperative management, because cooperation in practice is considered as a specific resource and one of the most important factors of a competitive position. The next group of methods concerned production planning and control. Drum Buffer Rope (DBR) and theory of constraints (TOC) were discussed as part of it. From the company’s point of view, methods related to manufacturing processes are very important, including group technology (GT) and cellular manufacturing (CM). Another group focused on commercial aspects, including demand chain management (DCM) and competitive intelligence (CI). The chapter also presents methods related to auxiliary software support, advanced organizational manufacturing and focused on product design. In the first case, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) was discussed, in the second, virtual enterprises (VE) and World Class Manufacturing (WCM) were presented, and in the third, the assumptions concerning the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and House of Quality (HOQ) method were shown. Additionally, Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) are discussed within the framework of methods focused on cost and quality manufacturing.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Big Data (BD) innovations have become the key differentiators in any competitive analyses, and has become/is, a lifestyle. Building on the Diffusion of Innovation theory, Technology Acceptance Models 1, 2, 3, and the International Requirements Engineering Boards’ (IREB) Requirements Engineering framework, this study aims to identify perceptions towards BD innovations, to design agile feature-based and rule-based intelligent systems, adaptable to progressive changes over time in the future. To reduce variable bias, random sampling of two overlapping demographics is carried out, over two time periods. The first case study, involves perceptions towards BD Innovations, blockchain, Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality. The second case study relates to perceptions towards intelligent assistants, e.g. Alexa. For the first case study, by triangulating correlation analyses, linear regression analyses, k-means and hierarchical agglomerative clustering (HAC) results, findings reveal different degrees of acceptance/caution among age groups and gender, and the influence of job prospects on perceptions. Furthermore, HAC’s profile means is more explanatory in terms of distribution and number of clusters, while k-means’ profile means is more positive than HAC’s. For the second case study, findings indicate that personality/dispositions, Technology Acceptance Model’s (TAM) adjustment and anchor, as well as interaction styles, may influence perceptions, more than gender or ability. Together, the two case studies provide age-progressive requirements analyses, and an opportunity tree. The fuzzy characterizations can be used in computational thinking design and matrix factorization in (fuzzy) rule-based design for seniors. However, sample size is small and thus, not generalizable.

Individual-based modeling (IbM) has emerged as a powerful approach for studying microbial populations, offering a bottom-up framework to simulate cellular behaviors and their interactions. Unlike continuum-based models, IbM explicitly captures the heterogeneity and emergent dynamics of microbial communities, making it invaluable for studying spatially structured phenomena such as nutrient competition, biofilm formation, and colony interactions. However, IbM faces significant computational challenges, particularly in resolving spatial overlaps during simulations of large microbial populations.
