Abstract:
This article aims to examine the beauty of the values still adhered to in Japanese society as traceable in creative works based on the experiences and observations of Malay writers. Values such as beauty, silence, refinement, internal strength and civilized living have been adapted from the ontological transformations and pathetic beauty inherited from the glory days of Matsuo Basho (1644- 1694) and Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972). This study draws on the cultural studies theory of Chris Barker. The discussion is centred on the experiences of several Malay writers who have fictionalized their experiences of life in Japan. Muhammad Haji Salleh follows Basho’s footsteps and is inspired by a love for nature and the soul and character of the Japanese, as recorded in his poems in the anthology Salju Shibuya ( The Snows of Shibuya ), while Arena Wati delves into the national pride and social history of the Japanese and Malays in his novel Sakura Mengorak Kelopak ( The Sakura Sheds its Petals ), and Abu Yazid Abidin shares the ups and downs of immigrant Malays in Japan in his own novel, Sejuk-sejuk Tokyo ( Frosty Tokyo ). Abstract:

Abstract:
The following study investigates the impact of the secular processes present in Early Modern Japan on Matsuo Bashō's prose. The theoretical basis for exploring this development is found in Durkheim’s distinction between the transcendent and the immanent, as well as the theoretical framework for secularism. The exploration of Bashō's writings is conducted through several key themes: self-presentation, people, religious concepts, nature and aestheticisms. From these categories a complex pattern emerges. It illustrates the enduring nature of the contemporary world-views through numerous references to and descriptions of existing systems of thought. Bashō's response to the dynamic societal changes of his time is an outright rejection of the new developments; instead he turns to nature and romanticism steeped in existing tradition.

Shibuta, Suzanne Noelle. "Brazil and Bashō: Negotiating Japanese-Brazilian Hybrid Identity Through Mujōkan in Adriana Lisboa’s Rakushisha." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8281.

Full text
Abstract:
Hybrid identities occupy a unique space within the field of identity and culture. Due to the instability and transitory nature of hybrid identities, individuals who fall within the category of hybridity often struggle to recognize and accept their identities. Do such individuals identify with one culture, the other, neither, or both? Adriana Lisboa’s novel Rakushisha offers new insight into the realm of hybridity through the exploration of mujōkan, a uniquely Japanese awareness of impermanence that also helps to explain the cycle of suffering, continuity, and regeneration that Lisboa’s characters experience. Although hybrid identities by nature are unstable, constantly in motion and imbalanced, mujōkan presents a conceptual framework that allows for the possibility of accepting this instability and impermanence as a way of being, allowing Japanese-Brazilians to untangle the web of uncertainty surrounding their identity and embrace the transience of their culture and hybridity. Lisboa’s novel and the concept of mujōkan work together to show not only the possibility of Japanese-Brazilians to accept and understand the transitivity of their identity but also to expand this concept to contemporary Brazilians, regardless of whether they claim Japanese heritage or not.

Abstract:

The dissertation is a study of the poetics of haikai in eighteenth-century Japan. It is more specifically concerned with the works of Yosa Buson and some of his followers. Rather than being a study of certain poems, it is an investigation of theories of aesthetics and composition, and of criticism. Most studies of haikai focus on the short haiku (or hokku) form, but the present study is more concerned with the core form of this poetry, the long chains of verses called "renku" or "haikai no renga".

One important object of this study is to challenge some of the established views of haikai found in modern scholarship. For this purpose, many standpoints of haikai theory have been found useful, since they often approach questions of interpretation from new and unexpected angles. Theoretical stances that stress convention and traditionalism are criticized and the spirit of haikai is found to be more in concord with theories of cognitive poetics.

The dissertation consists of three parts. The first is a study of general haikai theory. In this part are discussed theories of aesthetics, theories of creativity, and a few questions related to the interpretation of this kind of poetry. This discussion focuses on those questions that are central in Buson’s own writing on poetics and puts them into a broader context.

The second part deals with practical theories of renku composing. An introductory chapter gives a historical background to many concepts used in Buson’s age, and this is followed by a full translation and critical study of a renku treatise written by his disciple Takai Kitō.

The last part is an investigation of modern criticism written on Buson’s renku. All existing full-length studies of these poems are discussed in comparison. The absence of a long critical tradition concerning Buson’s renku has, in many cases, prevented the formation of established interpretations, and this is ideal for a study of this kind.

Abstract:
The japanese poetry is not very known in Portugal in spite of the connection between our country and Japan dating from the 16th century. Abstract:
The poetic way that poet Matsuo Bashô (1644-1694) appears to have gone through, especially in the last decade of his life, shows a curious pragmatic turn. After achieving fame and reputation, Bashô decides to move to a humble hut built by his disciples on the outskirts of the capital, adopt the name of a fruitless tree for his pseudonym, and wander around various points of Japan. Contrary to what would be expected, this pragmatic turn did not mean abandoning certain dimensions of existence for the sake of others, as for example in certain eremitic or ascetic embodiments. Its main implication was to act in such a way as to emulate the inclusiveness and mutability of nature as a creative and holistic process. This means acting as if the journey is the primordial state of existence. This peculiar attitude thus adopts a disposition similar to water flowing through the rivers: as a natural element that isn't necessarily restricted to its current path or even present state.

107
Abstract Through the records of literary history and traffic history, this essay crosses the importance and influence of Du Fu in the history of literature, from the original tradition in the history of Chinese literature to overseas, and discusses the poems of Du Fu’s poem through the exchanges between China and Japan, and Du Fu’s poem‘s influence after it entered Japan. This reasearch first compares the corresponding eras between China and Japan, and through the records of traffic history and literary history, discusses the cultural exchanges between China and Japan at that time, and through the historical context, it is more likely to introduce Du Fu’s poem enter to Japan. The time points are clarified; the second is about the influence of Du Fu’s poem from the Heian period to the Edo period after being introduced to Japan, and then using it as a background to analyze Du Fu’s poem’s differenct influence between Haiku poet Matsuo Basho and Japanese Chinses poets Ishikawa Jyouzan. As literati in different eras and different literary fields, Matsuo Basho and Ishikawa Jyouzan have different writing styles. In addition, the literary beauty of Haiku and Han poetry is different, but we can still use a chronicle of Matsuo Basho’s life and Ishikawa Jyouzan’s life, literature and other points, find out what they are affected by Du Fu’s poem. As a poet with an important position in the history of Chinese literature, Du Fu's influence is far more than that. In the cultural communication across time and space and nationality, we not only opened our eyes to Du Fu’s poem,, but also use it as a base to explore more and more aspect.

What light is this that makes our sight... This is a research about light and time, about the relevance of a certain way of looking and the mystery of the visible. It is about the usual way of looking (the every-day view) and the look that is inhabited (the look-that-sees). In short, it is about how visibility – and more generally, existence - can be affected by a certain look. I purpose to walk this path through the evocation of some artists that approached these issues and from it they made art. They are: Gérard Castello-Lopes, Samuel Beckett, Paul Cézanne and James Turrell. Through art I propose to inquire visibility itself asserting that there it is unveiled (and hidden) the Mystery. That the mystery at the distant stars is the heaven on earth – and the ground beneath our feet
