Abstract In a classical work (Ann. Math.128, (1988) 385–398), D. R. Adams proved a sharp Trudinger–Moser inequality for higher-order derivatives. We derive a sharp Adams-type inequality and Sobolev-type inequalities associated with a class of weighted Sobolev spaces that is related to a Hardy-type inequality.

Abstract:
Abstract Here we show that mast cells (MCs) express the metalloproteases of the A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTS) family, and that ADAMTS expression is influenced by MC activation. Co-culture of MCs with live Gram-positive bacteria caused a profound induction of ADAMTS-9 and -6, as well as down-regulated expression of ADAMTS-5. Similar patterns were also seen after MC activation with calcium ionophore and by immunoglobulin E receptor crosslinking. Moreover, ADAMTS-5, -6 and -9 were all induced by activation of terminally differentiated murine peritoneal MCs and in a human MC line. ADAMTS-9 up-regulation in response to immunoglobulin E receptor crosslinking was strongly dependent on Gö6976-sensitive protein kinase C and partly dependent on nuclear factor of activated T cells and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells, respectively. The expression of ADAMTS-5, -6 and -9 was closely linked to MC maturation, as shown by their strong induction during the differentiation of bone marrow precursor cells into mature MCs. ADAMTS family members have been shown to possess aggrecanase activity. Accordingly, MCs were shown to express aggrecanase activity. Finally, ADAMTS-5 protein was detected in MCs by immunocytochemistry. Taken together, the present study reveals ADAMTS expression by MCs and that MC activation regulates the expression of these proteases, thus implicating the ADAMTS family of proteases in MC function.

The space telescopic mast has the characteristics of high rigidity, strong bearing capacity and simple deployment principle. Aiming at the shortcomings of large mass and limited screw length in the existing telescopic mast, a spiral climbing-driven telescopic mast was designed, and the structural design and kinematic analysis were studied. The verification results of the motion simulation through ADAMS software are consistent with theoretical calculations. The new telescopic mast has the characteristics of light weight, low manufacturing cost, and unrestricted length of single-section stretching.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTCaptain William Adams (1837–1890) was one of the exceptional whaling masters who sailed from Dundee in Scotland. This paper uses primary sources to confirm his reputation not only as a whaler but also as an adventurous explorer and wealthy businessman. He became outstandingly successful with Alexander Stephen & Sons, the Dundee shipping company that pioneered the use of auxiliary powered vessels for use in sealing in Labrador and fishing for whales in the Davis Strait and beyond. His first command was the Arctic in 1868, and his reputation was such that he was chosen by Albert Hastings Markham as his mentor in gaining experience for polar exploration. The unfortunate loss of the Arctic in Regent Sound in 1875 did no damage to this reputation and Adams was made Master of the newly built flagship of the company's fleet, the Arctic II. In 1883, by then a rich man, Adams became his own Master with the purchase of the Maud. In 1890, the vessel was returning to Dundee from Arctic waters when Captain Adams, who was accompanied by his son also William Adams (1869–1942) acting as Mate, was taken fatally ill, dying at Thurso in Caithness.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the design process of mobile-based narratives to verify whether the affordances and constraints of the supporting medium have contributed to shaping specific discursive strategies and particular participation modes. Have properties such as connectivity, location-awareness, portability and multimodality enabled narrative formats that gained force by contesting traditional patterns and classic narrativity notions? The unveiling of the research inquiry happens through a bricolage of methods from artistic and scientific domains. The study of the phenomenon comprises three correlated stages: 1) theoretical literature review that investigates the artistic use of locative and mobile media, and their influence in the basic principles governing narratives, 2) case study of Blast Theory artistic practice grounded in the ethnographic approach of a site-visit, and resulting in a qualitative analysis of four of their projects, 3) applied-theory activities that lead to the collaborative development of a geolocated narrative which serves to evaluate participant's experience.

Leguminosae Adans. is the third largest angiosperm family. It has a cosmopolitan distribution, its center of diversity being located in the tropics. It has ca. 19,325 species and is subdivided in three subfamilies: Caesalpinioideae, Mimosoideae and Papilionoideae. In Brazil, there are 2,741 species, 957 of which occur in the Atlantic Rainforest, 11 of them being endemic to this domain, and 528 in Minas Gerais. The family has a high economic importance, being used as food, wood, shade, ornamental, firewood, medicinal and fertilizer, among others. This work consists of the florist and ethnobotanical study of the Leguminosae species occurring at Serra do Brigadeiro State Park (SBSP). The park is located at the Zona da Mata Mineira (Forest Region of Minas Gerais state), between latitudes 21° and 20°21’S and longitudes 42°20’ and 42°40’W, and encompasses large areas of Atlantic Rainforest remnants. This study is divided into two chapters. The first one aimed to assess the floristic composition of the Leguminosae occurring across the SBSP phytophysiognomies, as well as to elaborate an identification key, botanical illustrations, and comments with diagnostic characters, geographical distribution, habit, and flowering and fructification periods of the species. The second chapter aimed to perform the ethnobotanical study of the Leguminosae species used by rural communities located near the park entrance, at Araponga and Fervedouro municipalities, on the SBSP surroundings, identifying the categories of use reported by the informants and analyzing the relative importance of these species. For the study reported in the first chapter, collections of botanical material were made on a monthly basis from June 2011 through March 2014. From each sampled individual, fertile branches were collected and herborized according to usual botanical techniques and deposited in the VIC Herbarium collection. Taxonomic identification was made based on the analysis of morphological characters, review of specialized literature, comparison with herbaria material and assistance of specialists, whenever necessary. A total of 79 species were identified, distributed among 33 genera and 12 tribes. The Papilionoideae was the most representative subfamily, with 39 specific and infra-specific taxons, followed by Mimosoideae (26 taxons) and Caesalpinioideae (14 taxons). The tree taxons were predominant at SBSP, representing 41% of the species, followed by lianas and vines (21%), subshrubs (15%), shrubs (11.5%) and herbs (10%). Thirty-four species sampled in the taxonomic study were mentioned in the ethnobotanical one (Chapter II). The ethnobotanical data were obtained through 23 open semi-structured interviews, the informants of which were chosen through the snowball method. The interviews were made in the form of guided tours. Data was analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Overall, 56 Leguminosae species were reported, which were grouped in 14 categories of use. The Papilionoideae was the most cited subfamily, with 27 useful species (12 genera), followed by the Mimosoideae, with 17 species (9 genera) and the Caesalpinioideae, with 10 species (7 genera). Fourteen categories of use were established, eight of which are emic (human food, animal food, firewood, fence, furniture, hedge, binding and medicinal) and six of which are ethical (no use, construction, mystical, technology, ornamental and other uses). “Human food” and “construction” were the largest categories, with 16 species reported to each. Overall, the former had 78 citations. Eleven Leguminosae species with the highest importance of use were cited: five Mimosoideae, four Papilionoideae and two Caesalpinioideae. “Jacaré” (Piptadenia gonoacantha (Mart.) J. F. Macbr.) was the species with the highest concordance of use (71.4%), being the most reported one by the informants, with a total of 21 citations. In view of the diversity of the Leguminosae used by rural communities from Araponga and Fervedouro municipalities, the preservation of these species is greatly important to the maintenance of the daily activities of these peoples and to the conservation of the flora biodiversity on SBSP and its surroundings, as well as to the valorization of traditional knowledge regarding plant use. Leguminosae was revealed to be important in several categories of use. The informants involved in the study have knowledge on the local vegetation that contributes to their traditional knowledge.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
On the eve of the Civil War, Scott County farmer James M. Stone owned twenty-three enslaved people, farmed 137 acres of improved land along South Elkhorn Creek, and was one of the most prosperous farmers in the county. By 1867, his industrial distillery produced about thirty barrels of whiskey per week. He entered into a business partnership with James H. Shropshire, who assisted with management and provided some of the capital for expansion. Stone made extensive modifications to his works to comply with the new federal requirements imposed by the 1868 revenue law, including building a state-of-the-art stack-type warehouse of brick, with a metal roof and iron window shutters. Cooper Adam Michaels made barrels for Elkhorn and other distilleries. Elkhorn’s transport connections for grain, construction materials, fuel, and whiskey were unimproved roads and a track-side depot on the railroad some two and a half miles distant. Logistics proved to be problematic for the duration of Elkhorn’s operations. Elkhorn consumed more grain than was produced locally and required shipments from Outer Bluegrass counties; barley malt came from Canada, and hops arrived from brokers in Lexington and Cincinnati. Most grain was shipped in sacks. New mechanical equipment often proved unreliable or unsuited for its application, necessitating ad hoc repairs. The distillery operation included a large pen where hogs were fed slop.

Abstract:
Low speed sliding bearings are widely used in many industrial engineering fields. Friction induced vibration sometimes occurs, which decreases the performance and the life of machines besides introducing heavy noise. It is still quite difficult however, to predict the occurrence of the frictional vibration due to the nonlinearity of the system. This paper tries to address the occurrence of stick-slip motion by means of experiments and simulations. With a specially designed test device, extensive tests were carried out on face-to-face contact specimens of a resin material (Polyamide 6) that rotates against steel specimens, to understand the occurrence of stick-slip motion. Math models have been employed to describe the discontinuous transition between the static and the kinetic friction coefficient of the rubbing pairs. Based on the transition law, two contact models were employed to describe the dynamic interaction between the resin and the steel specimens. A special subroutine was then implemented in Adams by C-language. Simulations were conducted for the influence of contact pressure and relative speed on the occurrence of the stick-slip motion. Comparisons show the applicability and accuracy of the models.
