Abstract:
Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2002
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The goal of this study is to analyse the motifs of reconciliation and forgiveness in the Gospel of Matthew from a socio-rhetorical perspective. The first two chapters expound the chosen methodology, define its aim and identifies relevant pericopes using a heuristic definition of each motif. The third chapter gives an overview of Matthew's inner texture. The next seven chapters interpret the inner, inter- and argumentative textures of the different pericopes by utilizing the recourses of classical and modem rhetoric, anthropology and sociology. The concluding chapter focuses on Matthew's social and cultural texture in an effort to systemize his interpretation of Jesus' teaching of forgiveness and reconciliation. The realities of internal conflict, Roman oppression and a growing, if not yet permanent, separation from Formative Judaism are all taken into account. It is proposed that reconciliation with the Romans and Jews was not seen as a desirable strategy by Matthew, whereas it was non-negotiable for the relationship between members of his church. The concluding chapter also reads Matthew as a narrative In order to provide an answer to the question if it possesses an unified theology of forgiveness and reconciliation. Consideration is therefore given to the occurrence of key peri copes in regard to the development of the Gospel's narrative. It concludes that the dishonourable nature of being crucified in the Jewish and Greco-Roman world compelled Matthew to redefine Jesus' death as a honourable one, before he could link it with God's atonement of sinners. The relative importance of both motives is also confirmed by their inner textual placing in Matthew instead of by the frequency with which they occur. A reviewed definition of both motifs, and their relevance for the contemporary church, is given at the end of the last chapter. This study proposes that whereas forgiveness was seen as dishonourable in the first century Mediterranean world, Jesus not only mediated God' forgiveness in words (e.g. 6: 12-15) and deeds (9: 1-8), but also realized it through His death for many (20:28 and 26:28). For Matthew Jesus is the ultimate broker of God's forgiveness while deeds of forgiveness by followers of Jesus are seen as the honourable imitation of God action, as the ultimate benefactor, in forgiving His clients their sins. While Matthew gives a partial indication of the process by which forgiveness and reconciliation should be pursued in the everyday life of the church (e.g. in 5:23-24 and 18:15-20), he refrains from giving an exhaustive outline. The following can however can be deduced. Grace received, as a gift, demands reciprocal deeds of grace. Those who have experienced, or who seek, God's grace are thus under an obligation to forgive others (6:12, 14-15). Within the first century milieu of Matthew forgiveness and reconciliation was not an internal private affair, but a communal one. It is clear that according to Matthew not al people are automatically forgiven and thus reconciled with God. God's judgement remains a reality for those who opposed His will (21 :33-45; 25:31-46) and who blaspheme the Holy Spirit by continuously opposing His saving work through Jesus (12:31-32).

Abstract:

Abstract:
The word δηθαηνζύλε occurs 92 times in 86 verses in the Greek New Testament. With regard to the four gospels, its incidence is the highest (70%) in Matthew. Among the other synoptic writers, only Luke uses it, and only once. The word δηθαηνζύλε occurs seven times in the Gospel of Matthew, and five of these occurrences are found in the Sermon on the Mount. It is clear that righteousness constitutes an important concept in the Gospel. With the term δηθαηνζύλε as the key element, the Gospel shows a structure in which the Sermon on the Mount with its five occurrences of δηθαηνζύλε is framed by 3:15 and 21:32, each one of these containing δηθαηνζύλε once. Matthew emphasises the enduring validity of the law and its fulfilment, of which the consequence is referred to in 5:20 as righteousness that could be described as more abundant righteousnessi. Therefore, to Matthew the relationship between law and righteousness is indicated by ἐληνιή in 5:19. The righteousness proposed by Matthew must comply with the will of God and the demands of the “kingdom of heaven”. From 6:1, it is clear that this is righteousness before your father. Matthew wants to impress it on the reader that righteousness must not be practised before people but before God eventually. I would appear that Matthew and Paul use the term δηθαηνζύλε in different ways. The aim of this study was therefore to ascertain what meaning Matthew wants to convey by δηθαηνζύλε in the Gospel, and in what way he applies this meaning to his arguments in the Gospel. In Chapter 1, the background and the problem statement are set out. The objective of Chapter 2 was to ascertain if Matthew‟s use of the concept of righteousness was influenced by the situation that gave rise to the Gospel of Matthew coming into being (Sitz im Leben der alten Kirche). It was concluded that Matthew wanted to present a more abundant δηθαηοζύλε to the community in Antioch in order to assist them in defining their identity. In Chapter 3, the meaning of the word δηθαηνζύλε outside the Gospel of Matthew was investigated. It was found that context plays an important role in establishing the meaning of the word. It also became clear that δηθαηνζύλε is a wide concept that comprises both the meanings of “ethical action by man” and “gift of God”. The objective of Chapter 4 was to ascertain what δηθαηνζύλε meant to Matthew. It was concluded that he used the term in an ethical sense. In Chapter 5, the statement that there might be a tension between the Sermon on the Mount and the rest of the Gospel was investigated in order to find out in what way Matthew applied his interpretation of righteousness in his arguments. The conclusion was that there is no tension between the Sermon on the Mount and the rest of the gospel. It was also found that Matthew and Paul do not differ from each other theologically with regard to the meaning of the word δηθαηνζύλε; indeed, they are close to each other in this respect. In Chapter 6, a final conclusion was made regarding the use of δηθαηνζύλε in the Gospel of Matthew, viz. that Matthew and Paul complement each other in their semantic interpretation of the word δηθαηνζύλε in such a way that the result is a comprehensive concept of righteousness. It was found that Matthew‟s presentation of the concept associated with the term δηθαηνζύλε provides important ethical values that could be applied the South African society.

Abstract:
The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to understand how theories of organizational culture canenrich our understanding of Matthew’s group, his parable speech and the parables of thekingdom of heaven. I argue that Matthew edited and constructed the parable speech to fit hisintentions so that he could call for righteous behavior from the members of his group. I thenargue that the parable speech can be viewed as a regulatory document that addresses externalproblems of adaption and internal problems of integration that Matthew’s group had to face.I also argue that the parables of the kingdom of heaven are related to externaland internal problems and that the parables can be understood as artifacts that express thepreferred behavior applied by the leaders of Matthew’s group. My conclusion is that the theories of organizational culture give us a betterunderstanding of the complex situation of Matthew’s group and that the parable speech isrelated to these issues and addresses the group. It can therefore be considered a regulatorydocument. The parables of the kingdom of heaven can be understood as stories that call forrighteous behavior and persuade the Jewish people to join Matthew’s group through followingthe law according to view held by Matthew’s group.

Abstract:
The gospel according to Matthew has particularistic (i.e. specific to the Jews) as well as universal features. The particularistic features are demonstrated by the Jews included in the gospel, whereas the gentiles (non–Jews) are representative of the gospel’s universal nature. Traditionally, it is said that the gentiles in the gospel often come to confess Jesus as the Messiah, whereas the majority of Jews reject Him. Gentiles who come to confess Jesus will likely become part of the church. However, some researchers doubt whether the gospel according to Matthew does indeed present such a positive picture of the gentiles. This may have implications for the inclusion of the gentiles in the church. The question arises whether gentiles become part of the church by virtue of their confession of Jesus as the Christ. The purpose of this study was thus to determine whether gentiles become part of the church by virtue of their confession. Chapter 1 sets out the background to the research question and the problem statement. Chapter 2 asks whether gentiles do indeed come to confess the Messiah. The birth narratives provide an outlook of gentiles who will come to a confession. In the ministry narratives, the Roman officer and the Canaanite woman acknowledge Jesus’ authority. The Roman officer receives the promise that non–Jews will be part of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Canaanite woman points towards gentiles who will triumph over the gates of hell. When Jesus dies, the Roman soldiers acknowledge Him as the Son of God. This is based on a literature study. Chapter 3 asks whether the Jews reject Jesus as the Messiah. The fulfilment citations place the unrighteousness of the Jews in continuity with Israel of old, and the disputations and declaration of woe reveal the hypocrisy of the Jewish leaders. This is also based on a literature study. Chapter 4 explores the meaning of the word rock (petra) on which Jesus builds His church ? according to Matthew 16:18. In order to establish the meaning of the word, an overview of the word’s interpretation history is provided. Secondly, the meaning of the word is also determined exegetically. Chapter 5 sets out a summary of all the findings of the study. The main findings are: Gentiles often come to confess Jesus; in contrast, most Jews reject Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus builds the church on Himself as the Rock, but extends the privilege to those, like Peter, who confess Him to become lesser bricks in the church. It can therefore be said that gentiles become part of the church by confessing Jesus as the Christ.

Abstract:
Matte surfaces, that is, those that are dull or lusterless not glossy and shiny, are a current trend in packaging. But does packaging surface affect what consumers think about the product inside it? We focus on consumers' perception of packaged food products at the point of sale. Using three experiments, we show that food in matte packaging can be perceived as more natural. Notably, the effect of matte packaging only holds for rather artificial products. When matte packaging increases perceptions of product naturalness, consumers also expect the product to be tastier and are more likely to buy it.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (DTh (Practical Theology and Missiology))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
The focus of the research is the problem that congregations experience in ministry when they are trying to integrate children and adults in inclusive intergenerational spaces in such a way that it will enable children and adults to serve God together and grow together spiritually. The research may be described as a quest for a theology and a church that truly invite and welcome children into their midst, and care for the children’s total humanness. As an exploratory study the research aims to contribute to the development of knowledge in respect of the theological foundation of a ministry in which adults accept the challenge of growing spiritually together with their children. The research was embarked upon from the perspective of Child Theology and a practical-theological ecclesiology. As a theology-from-below, Child Theology is a contextual theology and as such an inductive methodology was followed in the research. The first phase of the research examined the social and ecclesiastical context in which children grow up during the beginning of the 21st century. The social analysis revealed that children grow up in a global network society, characterized by fragmentation in different generations and developmental groups, an excessive emphasis on individualistic self-fulfilment, the disintegration of family life, the social exclusion and marginalization of children, and the search for identity. The ecclesiastical analysis has revealed that, from various quarters, a demand has arisen for greater theological contemplation about, and a new approach to, children’s ministry. The second phase of the research examined the diverse Biblical testimony concerning children, God, and the faith communities’ involvement with children. A number of Biblical theological perspectives in respect of children and the ministry to them have come to the fore, and were formulated. Beside all the other perspectives that have come to the fore, it became clear that, for the 21st century, the church and theology should reinterpret especially the radicalism of the testimony about Jesus’ interaction with children in the Gospel of Matthew. In the final phase, the hermeneutical process was continued in a sensitive correlative dialogue between the Word and the world in order to find basic-theoretical pointers for a discourse regarding the design of a practice theory for a ministry that can integrate children and adults in congregational life. These pointers are expressed as six lenses, while the parameters for a practice theory are shown. Enacting this practice theory demands more than a few superficial adaptations in the ministry of congregations. It demands, under the guidance of the Word and Spirit, that congregations rediscover their kenosis identity as God’s communities in which all have been transformed and have become like little children. God’s missional and community-founding identity will be reflected by the identification of values that can guide them in the realization of this kenosis identity in their ministry to, with, by and for children. Thus, this research generates the following condensed hypothesis: The ministry with children in and through the congregation as intergenerational space, can be a corrective of the disintegration of family life, the fragmentation of society in different generations and developmental groups, the excessive emphasis on individualistic self-fulfilment and the social exclusion and marginalization of children if, in the development of an effective ministry with children, the focus is on the rediscovery and realization of identity as a reflection of God’s missional and community-building identity.

Abstract:
Nyckelord: Accountability, mimesis, situated kunskap, matter matters.
Abstract This is a work with focus on the body, the body in our reality and how it moves compared to how it looks and moves in animation and film. An examination which have been done, focusing on bigger companies and how they have used the body in their animations and films. It also compares these companies and how they used the body to create feelings, expressions and how they have used movement. This will lead to a design with the body in focus consisting of some animations and video clips. Words like matter matters (Barad. 2007) and mimesis (Olofsson. Olsson. Sörbom. u.å) to see what details that make a difference, importance and to mimic what the eye sees of the body in reality. With help of using analysing methods to review films to see what the creators used of the body to later on use it to advantage in our own design. With some help from methods that tries out and compare animations and filmed materials, putting them together, beside each other and on top on each other. How words have helped us to create what we have created and their meaning of it all. An ending part that discuss and summarize what the examination have come to and what the design turned into. What the research meant during the examination and what has been used and not been used. Keywords: Accountability, mimesis, situated knowledge, matter matters.

Milk contains 9 essential nutrients, making it one of the most nutrient-rich beverages that both children and adults can enjoy. We recommend consuming 3 cups per day of fat-free (skim), low-fat (1% or 2%), or equivalent milk products for healthy adults and children 2 years of age and older. We have illustrated the amount of total fat and saturated fat in 1 cup of milk. A delicious and easy recipe for rice pudding using skim milk is also included.

Abstract:
The human central auditory system can automatically extract abstract regularities from a variant auditory input. To this end, temporarily separated events need to be related. This study tested whether the timing between events, falling either within or outside the temporal window of integration (~350 ms), impacts the extraction of abstract feature relations. We utilized tone pairs for which tones within but not across pairs revealed a constant pitch relation (e.g., pitch of second tone of a pair higher than pitch of first tone, while absolute pitch values varied across pairs). We measured the mismatch negativity (MMN; the brain’s error signal to auditory regularity violations) to second tones that rarely violated the pitch relation (e.g., pitch of second tone lower). A Short condition in which tone duration (90 ms) and stimulus onset asynchrony between the tones of a pair were short (110 ms) was compared to two conditions, where this onset asynchrony was long (510 ms). In the Long Gap condition, the tone durations were identical to Short (90 ms), but the silent interval was prolonged by 400 ms. In Long Tone, the duration of the first tone was prolonged by 400 ms, while the silent interval was comparable to Short (20 ms). Results show a frontocentral MMN of comparable amplitude in all conditions. Thus, abstract pitch relations can be extracted even when the within-pair timing exceeds the integration period. Source analyses indicate MMN generators in the supratemporal cortex. Interestingly, they were located more anterior in Long Gap than in Short and Long Tone. Moreover, frontal generator activity was found for Long Gap and Long Tone. Thus, the way in which the system automatically registers irregular abstract pitch relations depends on the timing of the events to be linked. Pending that the current MMN data mirror established abstract rule representations coding the regular pitch relation, neural processes building these templates vary with timing.

Abstract:
Art has taught me to treasure family history. Since childhood, I have loved looking through my grandparents’ memorabilia, especially old family photos and my grandmother’s jewelry box. I have always admired my grandparents and recognized their unique gifts and artistic talents. I keep their memories, stories, and sayings alive through my artwork. My symbolic work consists of illuminated sculptural pieces as well as intimate jewelry designs. I work in precious metal clay (PMC), glass, sterling silver, crystals, precious stones, and photographs to create personal and unique reminders of people and places. Through my work, I want to inspire others to appreciate their own family histories. I want my audience to realize we need to love, appreciate, and accept one another for who we are and cherish the moments we have together. I want others to recognize the legacy we all leave behind.

Abstract:
While the proliferation of literature on the subject of growing incivility in society demonstrates the increasing importance given to civility by corporate America, there has been little academic investigation of the concept. The limited number of academic studies on civility reveals immense negative consequences for uncivil behavior. One question for marketers of businesses is whether lack of civility among front-end personnel can negatively influence sales. This dissertation is an attempt to fill this research gap by exploring responses to uncivil behavior under the theoretical framework of attribution theory. Using the CDSII scale based on attribution theory, experimental research design was used with current civil and uncivil behavior by the store employees and past experiences (positive, negative, and no-experience) with the store as stimulus. The consumers' perception of civility, attributions and behavioral intentions were measured and used as dependent variables. The results of the experiment showed that when a customer discerns employee behavior to be uncivil, the customer's perception of the level of the ability of the employee to control his own behavior decreases. The results of the study enhance the knowledge of two important consumer behaviors, namely complaining and switching behaviors by empirically studying their antecedents in a particular market interaction context. The results imply that it is important to eliminate or minimize any experience that the customer may construe as negative at a store. If practitioners can work towards eliminating or decreasing certain attributions of consumers, they can reduce the switching behaviors and thus impact customer retention rates and future sales. Though this study contributes to marketing theory and provides vital insights to practitioners, this study is but a starting point for further examination of the role of civility in consumer behavior and decision making.

Lujan, Escalante Maria Alejandra. "Diffracting digital public space(s) : matters and in-matters." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2017. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/85755/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a diffractive experiment, inspired by the agential realism of Karen Barad that allowed me to consider digital public space(s) through philosophies of technology, design and creative practices and with fictional stories that become waves of unruly phenomena from within. The research assumes an ontological move from being to becoming through catalytic encounters with others, human and non-human. Digital Public Space (dps) as a term was born between BBC’s and British Library’s desire to open up their digital archives to the public. The AHRC research project Creative Exchange (CX) adopted dps as a design challenge for knowledge exchange. As a member of the CX project I am making sense of dps in the context of practices emerging from the hybridity of the digital-physical domain. At the centre of my research are crossovers of academic interests, institutional dispositions, concepts, imaginations, people and stuff – wires, screens, paper prototypes, lines of code, doodles in the corner of the page. Meaningful, like a song, a memory, a photograph, a warm friendly hand or mundane, like streets, pans, toys and dust. I am making sense of how these matter and enable me to re-conceptualise the idea of digital public space. I am as concerned with the materiality of digital public spaces as with the “nothingness” within its materiality, which I propose is, far from nothing, but in-material. At the core of my investigation is a study of time and memory that contributes to new materialist conversations. By diffracting Husserl’s studies of internal perception of time, Stiegler’s exteriorization of memories in things, and Simondon’s transductive ideas, through Baradian agential realism. I speculate about in-matter. That which is in between and within matter, is time; the retentions of past and possibilities of futures. The generative differentiation that is underlying my in-matter proposal opens possibilities for careful and response-able practices. I diffract theories to think in methods to build a framework of emergence, with which to encounter knowledge through creative uses of digital technologies in public spaces, and allow a discussion of dps on its own terms. I consider three aspects of digital public space(s) grounded in collaborative projects: the digital-physical, focussing on participatory design of wearables, the public-private using the production of a public art installation, and the space-place discussed in the context of memorial and war commemoration. I am ‘doing’ theory, collaborating in practices and telling a story. I am taking up the challenge of applying Baradian diffraction in creative practices. My experimentation is more than a structural model to present the research. It is inspired by an epistemological disagreement with the separation of the researcher, what is researched, the apparatus of knowing, and presenting knowledge. The reiterations and contingencies of this method provoke a rhythm of time, propose a space, part meaning, part tangible, that does not just describe dps but performs my relationship with it. My research comes to matter in the framework of emergence that proposes new parameters for discussing ethics, politics and poetics of digital public space(s) in the making.

Full text
Abstract:
How should central banks conduct and communicate their policies to serve the goal of stabilizing the macroeconomy? This thesis -- consisting of three self-contained essays on dynamic macroeconomics -- is mainly intended as a progress report on exploring the normative aspect of monetary policy. The main result of the first essay is, that in the presence of idiosyncratic risk, the public revelation of information about uncertain aggregate outcomes can be detrimental. By announcing informative signals on non-insurable aggregate risk, the policy maker distorts agents'' insurance incentives and increases the riskiness of the optimal allocation that is feasible in self-enforceable arrangements. We consider a monetary authority that may reveal changes in the inflation target, and document that the negative effect of distorted insurance incentives can very well dominate conventional effects in favor for the release of better information. In the second essay, we study optimal monetary policy with the nominal interest rate as the single policy instrument. Firms set prices in a staggered way without indexation and real money balances contribute separately to households'' utility. The optimal deterministic steady state under commitment is the Friedman rule for a broad range of parameters. Optimal monetary policy in the short run is then characterized by stabilization of the nominal interest rate instead of inflation stabilization as the predominant principle. In the third essay, I examine whether the existence and the timing of real balance effects contribute to the determination of the absolute price level. As the main novel result, I show that there exists a unique price level sequence that is consistent with an equilibrium under interest rate policy, if beginning-of-period money yields transaction services. Predetermined real money balances can then serve as a state variable, implying that interest rate setting should be passive -- a violation of the Taylor-principle.

Abstract:
This thesis defends an account of what it is to trust other people, and what gives matters of trust a characteristic interpersonal or normative importance to us. Trust is an attitude of the trust stance; a more general attitude we take toward others in matters of trust, that includes distrust. Matters of trust are situations we trust/distrust others in. I put forward an account of the trust stance, that explains why matters of trust have interpersonal importance to us. Chapter 1 introduces the key questions to be addressed by the account. I outline how trust can be tied to specific actions, but can also be a general attitude we have about a person, or people. I set out how trust is standardly conceived as an anticipatory/predictive attitude, that also involves interpersonal import. That import is glimpsed in the possibility of betrayal by those we trust, and I point toward existing accounts of betrayal. I present arguments against accounts of trust that take it to be purely predictive, i.e. those of the rational choice/game-theoretic tradition. Chapter 2 introduces the dominant philosophical view of trust, which holds that to trust is to rely on another, such that we can be betrayed by her. I call this the Reliance plus (REL+) view. I offer a critical overview of three prominent REL+ accounts, from Baier (1986), Holton (1994), and Hawley (2014). I illustrate how an account of distrust that Hawley endorses, of betrayable non-reliance on another, results from REL+. Chapter 3 presents an argument against REL+. I argue it cannot allow for the possibility of uncertainty about another, where uncertainty is a trust stance attitude between trust and distrust. Uncertainty is possible, so REL+ must be false. Chapter 4 presents another argument against REL+. The argument is that distrust cannot be a product of non-reliance, so REL+ must be false. I argue that REL+ fails because it ignores a distinction between two senses of 'trust': an activity of reliance, and a mental state of assurance. Distrust is only an attitude of wariness, opposed to assurance, rather than reliance. I defend the claim that reliance requires practical dependence on what is relied on. I build upon in this claim in the next chapter. Chapter 5 defends an account of reliance as an activity, in support of the active/stative trust distinction from chapter 4. I evaluate Smith's (2010) account of reliance, which endorses practical dependence. I argue that Smith's account faces a dilemma, showing the account is either incomplete, or that it renders reliance impossible. I defend a 'role placement in activity' account of reliance, that avoids the dilemma. Chapter 6 defends a distinction between reliance and dependence in general. Where reliance involves practical dependence, I argue that dependence is a matter of fundamentally needing something as a matter of functioning and wellbeing. My account of the concept comes into play in chapter 8. Chapter 7 sets out a more detailed account of the stative trust stance attitudes. I use the active/stative distinction to address a question over whether we can trust voluntarily, and the relation between specific and general trust. I set out the concept of a situational vulnerability, that the trust stance attitudes are about, and which can result from reliance on another. I defend an account of the trust stance as a rolling schema: an anticipatory framework that involves interpreting another's motives toward us, in respect of situations of vulnerability. Chapter 8 argues that the interpersonal import of trust is a product of our felt need for secure attachments to individuals, and to belong to a group. I explain the relationship between social dependence on others and betrayability.

Abstract:
Feedback is used in a variety of contexts to train staff and to teach individuals new skills. Despite its popularity, there is no consensus on how to deliver it. Different measures have been used to evaluate the effectiveness of feedback, such as accuracy of responses and the sequencing of feedback delivery. The purpose of this study was to compare two feedback procedures and to explore new ways to measure the effectiveness of feedback. Four undergraduate students were exposed to two conditions: feedback before + skip the opportunity to respond and feedback after an incorrect answer. Results showed that the number of correct answers and teaching time were similar in both conditions. However, session duration was lower in the feedback before + skip condition when compared to the feedback after condition. Finally, reported emotions correlated with participants' correct responding. This study demonstrates that it is more beneficial and efficient to teach learners how to engage in a correct performance, rather than to correct responses.

Abstract:
This work draws on the discipline of Discursive Psychology for a theory of language, shown to be all but absent in the organizational knowledge management literature, and a methodology for the study of discourse. Organizational knowledge sharing is selected as the topic of primary research for its accessibility to analysis, and because it is considered to be an underpinning action to new knowledge creation. The research approaches discourse as action-orientated and locally situated, as constructed and constructive, with function and consequence for speakers. Indicative research questions are concerned with the discursively accomplished phenomena of trust, risk, identity and context, how these are accomplished in rhetorical interaction and with what effect on organizationally situated knowledge sharing. Recordings of organizations’ everyday knowledge sharing meetings, as well as an online discussion forum, are analysed focusing on these four themes. Findings show them to be accomplished as speakers’ live concerns in knowledge sharing talk. It is claimed that trust, risk and identity, as contexts displayed and oriented to by speakers themselves, are tacitly and collaboratively accomplished actions, shown to be co-relational and influential to knowledge sharing scope and directions. A further claim is that the analysis of discourse for what contexts in general speakers invoke displays speakers’ orienting to trust, risk and identity. Limitations of the present study are discussed, along with speculated implications for knowledge management and future directions for research. This work aims to contribute to the field of knowledge management in three ways. First, in extending the directions that some scholars and practitioners are already indicating through focusing the interest of study on organizational discourse. Secondly, the study seeks to understand how tacit knowing, as a phenomenon invoked by speakers themselves, is accomplished and how it influences the scope and directions of knowledge sharing actions, and with what effect. Finally, it is claimed that the research provides some support for those theorists in the knowledge management field who promote the knowing how-knowing that formulation, and those who are critical of conventional knowledge management’s heavy reliance on technology to deliver its objectives.

Full text
Abstract:

Revenue diversification is a term that becomes more relevant as higher education institutions are confronted with increased regulation, competition, declining enrollments, and strained finances. A challenge that many institutions face is that expenditures are higher than revenues and increase faster than them. The term Revenue diversification seems obvious to higher education administration professionals, although they do not all define it the same way. For that reason, it needs a precise definition so that the industry genuinely can embrace the concept and thereby seek to generate more revenues to drive existing and innovative agendas. Indeed, a common understanding will allow universities to develop strategies to reduce the reliance on traditional tuition and fees. The study examines three not-for-profit institutions with a student population less than 5,000 that already are diversifying their revenue streams. The definition of leadership at each institution is compared with the strategies that have been implemented or proposed in order to understand whether there is alignment. The three cases—Stevenson University, Franklin & Marshall College, and Oglethorpe University—respectively have the following story lines: 1) growth is the only possibility; 2) the current situation is one of stasis, and the way forward is unclear; 3) efforts must be undertaken to improve financial viability. In addition to the qualitative research, the study also encompasses an analysis of IPEDS that reflects how each institution is changing its revenues in comparison to a similarly situated group of institutions. The findings reveal that Revenue diversification is on everybody’s mind, but the definition of the term is inconclusive. Leadership teams are trying to determine what revenue-diversification strategies will work for the institutions and its stakeholders to be able to offset expense increases. Identifying new revenue sources will entail pursuing non-historical revenue sources, which includes academic programs, services, property, institutional advancement, and more. The higher education environment is concerning to many of its member institutions, and by diversifying revenues, long-term viability can be secured.

Abstract:
The present work focuses on the experience of the African-American girl as she grows up in Toni Morrisons "The Bluest Eye" and Maya Angelous "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings". The books, both published in 1970, portray the lives of young girls as they learn what it is to be black under a solid racist regime that dictates white western society as the norm. The norm includes, necessarily, physical traits that are established as the standards for beauty. African-American girls need to deal with these standards in their self-perception and identities. The study intends to demonstrate that families play a significant role in this process of self-perception and may encourage either the acceptance of these standards or their rejection.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on four papers dealing with two different areas of mathematics.Paper I–III are in combinatorics, while Paper IV is in mathematical physics. In combinatorics, we work with design theory, one of whose applications aredesigning statistical experiments. Specifically, we are interested in symmetric incompleteblock designs (SBIBDs) and triple arrays and also the relationship betweenthese two types of designs. In Paper I, we investigate when a triple array can be balanced for intersectionwhich in the canonical case is equivalent to the inner design of the correspondingsymmetric balanced incomplete block design (SBIBD) being balanced. For this we derivenew existence criteria, and in particular we prove that the residual designof the related SBIBD must be quasi-symmetric, and give necessary and sufficientconditions on the intersection numbers. We also address the question of whenthe inner design is balanced with respect to every block of the SBIBD. We showthat such SBIBDs must possess the quasi-3 property, and we answer the existencequestion for all know classes of these designs. As triple arrays balanced for intersections seem to be very rare, it is natural toask if there are any other families of row-column designs with this property. In PaperII we give necessary and sufficient conditions for balanced grids to be balancedfor intersection and prove that all designs in an infinite family of binary pseudo-Youden designs are balanced for intersection.Existence of triple arrays is an open question. There is one construction of aninfinite, but special family called Paley triple arrays, and one general method forwhich one of the steps is unproved. In Paper III we investigate a third constructionmethod starting from Youden squares. This method was suggested in the literaturea long time ago, but was proven not to work by a counterexample. We show interalia that Youden squares from projective planes can never give a triple array bythis method, but that for every triple array corresponding to a biplane, there is asuitable Youden square for which the method works. Also, we construct the familyof Paley triple arrays by this method. In mathematical physics we work with solitons, which in nature can be seen asself-reinforcing waves acting like particles, and in mathematics as solutions of certainnon-linear differential equations. In Paper IV we study the non-commutativeversion of the two-dimensional Toda lattice for which we construct a family ofsolutions, and derive explicit solution formulas.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In South Africa the boundaries of the common law principle of legal professional privilege in tax matters is unclear. Common law legal professional privilege in South Africa and in other jurisdictions has been a right available only to clients of attorneys. In 2015, amendments were enacted in section 42A of the Tax Administration Laws Amendment Act. These amendments set out further requirements that need to be satisfied for a taxpayer to claim his right to legal professional privilege over particular communications. The amendment does not feature any recognition of the extension of legal professional privilege for which all non-attorney tax practitioners have been lobbying for since the enactment of the Tax Administration Act. The stance taken by SARS in its non-response to the pleas for extension of legal professional privilege have both Constitutional and administrative consequences: constitutional consequences in the form of the infringement of the non-attorney tax practitioner’s right to equality and the taxpayer’s right to privacy: administrative consequences arise in the form of an infringement of an individual’s right to fair administrative justice under the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act. Foreign jurisdictions have been considered to determine whether South African is operating in line with international standards relating to legal professional privilege. Although, not every foreign jurisdiction examined for the purpose of this study, has implemented an extension of legal professional privilege, they have still ruled on the matter, or implemented an alternative solution, for example, a accountant concession for accountants. On this basis it is submitted that South Africa must implement a new provision within the Tax Administration Act defining the extension of legal professional privilege by law.

Abstract:
In this research physics ranking tasks were introduced to see if they could increase students' conceptual knowledge in general and calculus based physics courses. Assessments were given both pre and post in order to calculate a class's percent gain. Although students did not seem to enjoy or appreciate these types of tasks at the beginning, analysis of the percent gain did show a remarkable increase in the conceptual concepts that were assessed due to the physics ranking tasks.

Abstract:
Background Key Audit matters were introduced in Sweden in 2016 as a part of the expanded audit report with the purpose of being more informative and firm specific. Key audit matters are a section in the audit report where the auditor uses the professional judgement to disclose the most vital parts of the audit. Great Britain was one of the first countries to establish the expanded audit report in 2013. Debates and discussions in Sweden are occurring about whether Key Audit Matters are living up to its purpose of being firm specific or is there a risk that the new audit report will be standardized. Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate if a standardization of Key audit matters is occurring. Method In this study a deductive and eclectic approach. The study is also quantitative and uses archival data for the empirical data. The empirical data consists of data from two different years and two different countries. Conclusion The conclusion of this study is that there is no proof that there is a standardization occurring, but the study gives proof that there are differences in the degree of the standardization between Sweden and Great Britain

Steady. Tighten. Splice. Bend. Fold. Weave. Elongate. Stiffen. Break: This is the vocabulary of an undertaking of craft, designing-while-making, improvising, learning-while-doing. This thesis is an exploration of design as craft. Woven plywood models are created in improvisational moves, benefitting from the embodied knowing that comes with extended material engagement. The making of these pieces is an experimental and playful process, where methods are tested and discovered by hand. The body is the driver in this way of making, and decisions are made based on the possibilities and limitations of the material. The plywood pieces are held together with friction alone. With no boundary conditions and no permanent fixatives, they are endlessly malleable, repeatedly remade into new forms, each time producing new lessons for the maker. Drawings are created after making, in order to map these undevelopable forms. The series of drawings are not representative of form, but are instead a method to unravel the story of making. The resultant family of structures advocate for designers to engage with material in order to make discoveries of forms and methods that would not have arisen using the hylomorphic model of design. Working by hand allows the material to assert its own logic, principles, and exciting possibilities.

Edholm, Axel, and Ludvig Karlsson. "What Matters in Swedish Corporate Governance?" Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-357956.

Abstract:
By using five measures of corporate governance, this paper sheds light on the relationship between corporate governance, firm performance and firm valuation in a sample of large Swedish firms between 2013-2016. The study is conducted on the grounds of the Agency Theory as proposed by Jensen and Meckling (1976) and influenced by corporate governance research by Bhagat and Bolton (2008). Using Tobin’s Q and return on assets (ROA) as estimates of firm valuation and firm performance respectively, we find mixed results compared to prior research concerning the effects of good corporate governance. Our study shows that greater equity holdings of board members are significantly and positively impactful on Tobin’s Q as well as ROA. Furthermore, we find that a larger board size has a significant inverse relationship with both Tobin’s Q and ROA, which is consistent with prior research suggesting that smaller boards are more effective. Interestingly and partly inconclusive with prior research however, we find that greater equity holdings of the CEO is significantly and negatively impactful on Tobin’s Q as well as ROA. These results are robust for multiple controls and various models.

Abstract:
International Conference on Economics and Security in Madrid (Juni 2019).
The current return to protectionist measures coinciding with a rise of illiberalism triggers the need for a more detailed understanding of the interactions of economic and political dimensions. This thesis consists of four articles advancing our understanding of the complex interactions between trade, democracy, development and conflict. The first article (Boese 2015) asks: do revolutions lead to more democracy? The revolutionary conflicts examined are positively associated with a country's democratic path. In addition, the article introduces a new measure of democracy, the (X-)Pol Index. The second article (Boese 2019) compares measure validity and reliability of Polity2, Freedom House and V-Dem democracy indices. The latter surpass the former in all relevant areas. The article provides an introduction to democracy measurement, a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of each measure in empirical analyses and several case studies to illustrate differences across the three indices. The third article (Boese & Kamin 2019) shows that in spite of standardization efforts the problem of inconsistent country coding across and within disciplines persists. This leads to sample selection bias as countries in conflict often undergo state name and border changes. In turn, reliability of inferences drawn from statistical analysis, in particular in conflict and peace economics, is limited. Detailed overview tables of the gravest country coding discrepancies are provided. The fourth article (with K. Kamin, CAU Kiel) examines the interactions of democracy, development, trade and conflict. It employs a country-specific VAR to study the effects of shocks in any of the four factors on one another. Results show that these effects are vastly heterogenous across and within countries over time. The article received the Michael D. Intrilligator Best PhD Student Paper Award at the 23rd International Conference on Economics and Security in Madrid, Spain (June 2019).

Le, Forner Hélène. "Human capital inequalities : family structure matters." Thesis, Paris 1, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA01E039/document.

Abstract:
Family has known great transformations in the last decades in a large number of OECD countries. On one hand, fertility rates have decreased. On the other hand, the number of separations has increased sharply. This thesis asks whether these major changes of family structure affect child’s human capital, being a new source of inequalities. Using very large datasets and micro-econometric methods, the three chapters present original empirical evidence on whether parental separation and family size impact individual’s human capital. The first chapter studies the effect of parental separation in France on individual’s achievement, and find a negative effect of parental separation on individual’s educational attainment and social position. Using an American dataset, the second chapter asks whether this effect is driven by changes in time spent with parents, and find that 30% of the effect of parental separation on socio-emotional skills is explained by the decrease in time spent with at least one parent present. The third chapter accounts for another aspect of family structure: the number of children. Using a British dataset, we find that having a second sibling in the United Kingdom decreases the child’s socio-emotional skills, especially for girls

Abstract:
Whether on paper, on site or mediating between both, means for reading and writing geometry have been central to architecture: the use of compasses and rulers, strings, pins, stakes or plumb-lines enabled the analysis and reproduction of congruent figures on different surfaces since antiquity, and from the renaissance onwards, the consistent planar representation of three-dimensional shapes by means of projective geometry. Tacitly through practice, or explicitly encoded in classical geometry, the operational syntaxes of drawing instruments, real or imaginary, have determined the geometric literacies regulating the production and instruction of architecture. But making marks on the surfaces of paper, stone or the ground has recently given way to the fundamentally different sequential operations of computers as the material basis of architectural inscription. Practices which have dominated architecture since antiquity make little sense in its current reading and writing systems.  This thesis examines technologies of digital inscription in a search for literacies equivalent to those of drawn geometry. It particularly looks at programming as a form of notation in close correspondence with its material basis as a technology, and its effects on architecture. It includes prototypes and experiments, graphics, algorithms and software, together with their descriptions and theoretical analyses. While the artefacts and texts respond to the different forms, styles, interests and objectives specific to the fields and contexts in which they have originated, their fundamental purpose is always to critique and propose ways of writing and reading architecture through programming, the rationale of the research and practice they stem from.

Abstract:
If sex and gender, and ultimately our bodies are discursive constructions, then where is woman’s subjectivity grounded and what are the implications of such an approach to subjectivity for political efficacy? According to Meleau-Ponty ‘existence realises itself on the body’. If the body is the locus of subjectivity then it is to the matter of embodiment, as substance and as point of concern, which we need to turn in order to discuss the development of subjectivity, and gender subjectivity in particular. This thesis deals with the notion of gender as embodied practice and looks at the transgender subject – both transvestite and transsexual – as addressing the matter of embodiment located primarily in transsexuality’s desire to occupy material body. In the association that it establishes between gender practices and an experience of the ‘flesh as the flesh itself’ as defining subjectivity, the transsexual body, ‘the matter of embodiment’ as it has been argued, opens up a space for the reconsideration of the matter of embodiment altogether. Such concerns are addressed through a reading of the transsexual body via the work of Merleau-Ponty, Simone de Beauvoir and Judith Butler in the first part of the thesis. The second part develops the ideas stemming from these readings through the work of Angela Carter with a particular focus on embodiments of woman/hood in Nights at the Circus and The Passion of New Eve. Carter’s interest in the material conditions of woman, her concern with ‘demythologising’ women, as well as the bodily resistance – the body’s resistance to be consumed by and within discursive powers – embodied in her work, serve as the space for a re-examination of the role of the body in the development of gender subjectivity.

Abstract:

Stakeholder management is a topic that has received increased attention in later years. Researchers have tried to answer the question of which stakeholders that really matters to organizations and developed ways for identifying and prioritizing among stakeholders. This thesis fills a void in academia by looking exclusively on external stakeholders in large and complex projects such as the construction of power plants. The thesis investigates the approach towards external stakeholders as well as the process of identifying and prioritizing external stakeholders in this specific setting. By using attributes identified in earlier research, a theoretical framework was created that was used to investigate two of Sweden’s largest companies through a qualitative case study. The thesis describe how stakeholder identification and prioritization occurs in the different case companies and ultimately contribute with a new model that can be used by managers to prioritize among external stakeholder in organizational projects.
