Abstract:
Abstract Some writers have objected to cultural appropriation in the arts on the grounds that it violates cultures’ property rights. Recently a paper by Erich Matthes and another by C. Thi Nguyen and Matthew Strohl have argued that cultural appropriation does not violate property rights but that it is nevertheless often objectionable. Matthes argues that cultural appropriation contributes to the oppression of disadvantaged cultures. Nguyen and Strohl argue that it violated the intimacy of cultures. This paper argues that neither Matthes nor Nguyen and Strohl succeed in showing that cultural appropriation is often objectionable.

Abstract:
Based on original data from recent research, numerous new records of the suctorian species living as epibionts on stream-dwelling aquatic beetles (Coleoptera) and water mites (Acari, Hydrachnidia) in the southwestern Palaearctic area are giv-en. The following species are reported for the first time for the national faunas: Setodiscophrya deplanata (Matthes, 1954)(Bosnia and Hercegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey), Discophrya helmidis Matthes, 1954 (Montenegro, Tur-key), Elatodiscophrya hochi (Matthes, 1954) (Bosnia and Hercegovina, Turkey), Periacineta buckei (Kent, 1881) (Mon-tenegro, Greece), Discophrya lichtensteinii (Claparede & Lachmann, 1859) (Turkey, Iran). The characteristics of the suctorians as epibionts of stream-dwelling arthropods are briefly outlined.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a method of assessing hotel web sites in a way that may allow prediction of first impressions of those web sites. A model is presented that combines the ideas of media frames as defined by Matthes and Kohring and work on first impressions by Kim and Fesenmaier. To obtain information regarding the utility of this model a small sample of older travelers’ first impressions was gathered and a number of web pages analyzed for frame content. The trial run with this sample showed that it is possible to obtain both cohesive results from potential searchers and to classify frames consistently between researchers. In the small sample it was found that older people (50+) with travel aspirations did make quick judgments in terms of “first impression” and were favorably impressed by pages that “inspired” users and appeared easy to understand and navigate. There was considerable difference between first impressions of the same page, but subjects reported similar reactions to pages with the same frame elements.

Full text
Abstract:
It is important to evaluate the lubrication and replenishment effects of the submonolayer mobile lubricant in hard disk drives because increased recording density can only be achieved through near-contact or surfing recording without head wear. It is known that the minimum friction coefficient can be obtained at a specific bonding ratio [1]. In recent times, the lubricant thickness has been reduced to one monolayer and the thickness of the mobile lubricant layer, to less than 0.3 nm to reduce lubricant pickup on the head surface. Matthes et al. [2] shown that a certain fraction of the layer of currently used mobile lubricants with multiple polar groups is important for reducing head wear. Canchi and Bogy [3] experimentally studied the depletion caused by thermal flying height control (TFC) head contact and reflow speed for various lubricants. Although the diffusion characteristics of perfluoropolyalkylether (PFPE) lubricants layers with a thickness of a few nanometers can be evaluated by a diffusion equation based on continuum mechanics [4], the validity of the conventional equation in the submonolayer lubricant region is not clear. Mate [5] showed that the spreading of a pancake-shaped Z-dol lubricant layer with subnanometer thickness can be quantitatively evaluated by a diffusion equation based on continuum mechanics. Ono [6] showed that the replenishment process of a depleted groove generated by slider touchdown operation can be fairly evaluated by the conventional diffusion equation if the effective ratio of the Hamaker constant to the lubricant viscosity is properly chosen. However, the identified effective viscosity is too high to be estimated from other experimental data [5, 7]. Moreover, the validity of the diffusion equation based on continuum mechanics remains unclear in the submonolayer region.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a temporally-coherent matte-propagation method for videos based on PatchMatch and edge-aware filtering. Given an input video and trimaps for a few frames, including the first and last, our approach generates alpha mattes for all frames of the video sequence. We also present a user scribble-based interface for video matting that takes advantage of the efficiency of our method to interactively refine the matte results. We perform quantitative comparisons against the state-of-the-art sparse-input video matting techniques and show that our method produces significantly better results according to three different metrics. We also perform qualitative comparisons against the state-of-the-art dense-input video matting techniques and show that ours produces similar quality results while requiring less than 7% of their user input.
