Young, James O. "New Objections to Cultural Appropriation in the Arts." British Journal of Aesthetics 61, no. 3 (July 1, 2021): 307–16. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/aesthj/ayab009.

Abstract:
Abstract Some writers have objected to cultural appropriation in the arts on the grounds that it violates cultures’ property rights. Recently a paper by Erich Matthes and another by C. Thi Nguyen and Matthew Strohl have argued that cultural appropriation does not violate property rights but that it is nevertheless often objectionable. Matthes argues that cultural appropriation contributes to the oppression of disadvantaged cultures. Nguyen and Strohl argue that it violated the intimacy of cultures. This paper argues that neither Matthes nor Nguyen and Strohl succeed in showing that cultural appropriation is often objectionable.

Abstract:
Based on original data from recent research, numerous new records of the suctorian species living as epibionts on stream-dwelling aquatic beetles (Coleoptera) and water mites (Acari, Hydrachnidia) in the southwestern Palaearctic area are giv-en. The following species are reported for the first time for the national faunas: Setodiscophrya deplanata (Matthes, 1954)(Bosnia and Hercegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey), Discophrya helmidis Matthes, 1954 (Montenegro, Tur-key), Elatodiscophrya hochi (Matthes, 1954) (Bosnia and Hercegovina, Turkey), Periacineta buckei (Kent, 1881) (Mon-tenegro, Greece), Discophrya lichtensteinii (Claparede & Lachmann, 1859) (Turkey, Iran). The characteristics of the suctorians as epibionts of stream-dwelling arthropods are briefly outlined.

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with a certain property of the stationary distribution of a generalized semi-Markov process (GSMP) known as insensitivity. It is well-known that the so-called Matthes' conditions form a necessary and sufficient algebraic criterion for insensitivity. Most proofs of these conditions are basically algebraic. By interpreting a GSMP as a simple queueing network, we are able to show that Matthes' conditions are equivalent to the quasi-reversibility of the network, thus obtaining another simple proof of the sufficiency of these conditions. Furthermore, we apply our method to find a simple criterion for the insensitivity of GSMP's with generalized routing (in a sense that is introduced in the paper).

Abstract:
AbstractIce-walled melt ponds on the surfaces of active valley-floor rock glaciers and Matthes (Little Ice Age) moraines in the southern Sierra Nevada indicate that most of these landforms consist of glacier ice under thin (ca. 1 - 10 m) but continuous covers of rock-fall-generated debris. These debris blankets effectively insulate the underlying ice and greatly reduce rates of ablation relative to that of uncovered ice. Such insulation explains the observations that ice-cored rock glaciers in the Sierra, actually debris-covered glaciers, are apparently less sensitive to climatic warming and commonly advance to lower altitudes than do adjacent bare-ice glaciers. Accumulation-area ratios and toe-to-headwall-altitude ratios used to estimate equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) of former glaciers may therefore yield incorrect results for cirque glaciers subject to abundant rockfall. Inadvertent lumping of deposits from former debris-covered and bare-ice glaciers partially explains an apparently anomalous regional ELA gradient reported for the pre-Matthes Recess Peak Neoglacial advance. Distinguishing such deposits may be important to studies that rely on paleo-ELA estimates. Moreover, Matthes and Recess Peak ELA gradients along the crest evidently depend strongly on local orographic effects rather than latitudinal climatic trends, indicating that simple linear projections and regional climatic interpretations of ELA gradients of small glaciers may be unreliable.

Abstract:
Abstract Following Thiele, Matthes attributed the doctrine of ἀσύστατα (‘unresolvable questions’) to Hermagoras of Temnos (2nd century BCE). Precise analysis and evaluation of the four pertinent testimonies that Matthes assigns to Hermagoras in his edition shed doubt on that attribution. Based on a new argument I propose that only two of these four testimonies should be retained in a forthcoming edition of the fragments of Hermagoras. I also argue that the doctrine of ἀσύστατα is most likely later than the second century BCE. Either that doctrine should be assigned to the younger Hermagoras (2nd century CE), whose theories reached later Latin rhetoricians by a route that is no longer traceable, or the ἀσύστατα doctrine was assigned to a rhetorician of the name Hermagoras by a false supposition or simple error of the common source of the two retained testimonies.

Abstract:
AbstractA time-series of tree-ringwidth indices for alpine timberline foxtail pine (Pinus balfouriana) from the Sierra Nevada of California shows a growth response to summer, late fall, and early winter temperatures that is the inverse of that resulting in the expansion of alpine glaciers. These are correlated with lichen-dated moraines and avalanche deposits that accumulated during subsequent decades. Minima in the ringwidth record, reflecting marked temperature declines occurred at 810, 1470, 1610, 1700 and 1810. Cold periods of lesser extent are also indicated between 1190 to 1400 and suggest that the initial pulses of the Sierran Matthes advances may have begun as early as 1190, or 150 yr earlier than previously dated. The Matthes advances were preceded by a period of pronounced warmth from 900 to 1190 during which timberline rose 10 m to its present elevation. A warm period is also indicated between 1500 and 1580. Recent work extending the tree-ring chronology to 3031 yr B.P. and radiocarbon dating of weathered samples to 6300 yr B.P. suggests that the chronology may ultimately be applicable to the dating of earlier Sierran glacier advances.

Abstract:
This essay examines the definition and early development of the term “Little Ice Age,” a source of controversy in early modern studies and historical climatology. American geologist François Matthes first used the term “little ice-age” to describe the preceding 4,000 years, during which glaciers reached their greatest extent since the final Ice Age of the Pleistocene. Matthes’s reports for the American Geophysical Union’s Committee on Glaciers, however, demonstrate the critical importance of the sixteenth through nineteenth century. This essay discusses the relationship between Matthes’s theories of glaciation and climatic periodization and those of his predecessors and contemporaries, including Charles Rabot, Gordon Manley and G.S. Callendar. This essay also examines the early adoption and diffusion of Matthes’s evocative term, which appeared in popular publications only a decade after its initial introduction.

Abstract:
Here, we provide new records of suctorians (Ciliophora: Suctoria), epibionts of aquatic true bugs (Hemiptera: Prosorrhyncha: Nepomorpha) collected in Ukraine, Belarus and Mexico. The worldwide distribution of the 16 species we found is updated, from which, 15 species are new records as epibionts of 15 species of aquatic true bugs. Only for the suctorian Discophrya gessneri Matthes, we confirm the previous record (epibiont of Aphelocheirus aestivalis Fabricius). We conclude that the relationship between the suctorians and aquatic true bugs is poorly studied and some suctorian genera (Dis- cophrya Lachmann and Periacineta Collin) inhabit as nepomorphans as other aquatic insects (Coleoptera). However the high degree of specificity at the species level of these genera is evident, for which we provide some possible explanations according to the group of basibiont.

E 55 (1997) R3844–R3846] and studied mathematically by the authors in [C. Cancès, D. Matthes and F. Nabet, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 233 (2019) 837–866]. The scheme is shown to preserve the key properties of the continuous model, namely mass conservation, positivity of the concentrations, the decay of the energy and the control of the entropy dissipation rate. This allows to establish the existence of a solution to the nonlinear algebraic system corresponding to the scheme. Further, we show thanks to compactness arguments that the approximate solution converges towards a weak solution of the continuous problems as the discretization parameters tend to 0. Numerical results illustrate the behavior of the numerical model.
