Radde-Gallwitz, Andrew. Gregory of Nyssa's Doctrinal Works. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199668977.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The first monograph on Gregory of Nyssa’s entire corpus of works on the Trinity and the economy of Christ, this book argues that the numerous explicit parallels and links among the works suggest that the corpus is best studied synoptically. Despite differences of theme and intention, Gregory’s Trinitarian works center on the baptismal confession of Matthew 28:19, which Gregory reads as Christ’s own creed, and which, on his reading, presents an account of all divine activity as being accomplished in the Spirit. Gregory argues against both Eunomius and the Pneumatomachians that the Spirit’s act of giving the divine life in baptism should not be deemed inferior to the act of creation; Gregory’s metaphysical and epistemological arguments are subservient to this theme. The book also proposes a developmental reading of Gregory’s works Christ’s saving economy. Rather than assessing Gregory’s Christology by reference to a single systematic model, the book’s second part shows how the governing metaphors and models by which Gregory articulated his position shifted as he responded to various criticisms and addressed the various feasts of the Christian liturgical cycle. An integrated study of the various types of writing in Gregory’s corpus—from public orations proclaimed before imperially sponsored councils to festal homilies to extended treatises—the book offers new insights into the role of a leading bishop in the Theodosian empire and connects important parts of his literary output with the tasks given to him by the councils meeting in Constantinople in the years AD 381–3.

Abstract:
This chapter examines four works in which Gregory defends himself against charges of heterodoxy in his Trinitarian teaching: the confessions of faith known as Epistles 5 and 24, as well as the treatises To Eustathius—On the Holy Trinity and Against the Macedonians—On the Holy Spirit. The chapter first sets the works into the context of Gregory’s activities as an ambassador for the Council of Antioch in 379. Concerned Nicene allies prompted Gregory to write Epistles 5 and 24, and questions about those documents in turn prompted the two treatises examined in this chapter, as well as To Ablabius. Gregory’s reasoning in these works is centered on the interpretation of Matthew 28:19, which Gregory reads as Christ’s creed. In particular, Gregory grounds the unity of the Trinity on the activity of life-giving that comes in baptism from the Father, through the Son, and is perfected in the Holy Spirit.

Abstract:
This volume offers a wide range of insights into current media reception and effects research on the topic of ‘sustainability’. The contributions it contains deal with how this topic is communicated and negotiated on (social) media, how various message and context features affect sustainable behaviour, and what role established and ‘new’ actors—such as influencers or one’s own social media contacts—play in sustainability communication. Based on a broad understanding of sustainability, the articles document the current state of research in this field, answer open questions on an empirical basis and provide ideas for future research. Torrance, Alexis. Human Perfection in Byzantine Theology. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198845294.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Christian theology has from its inception posited a powerful vision of humanity’s ultimate and eternal fulfilment through the person and work of Jesus Christ. That said, how precisely to understand and approach the human perfection to which the Christian is summoned is a question that has vexed the minds of many and diverse theologians. Orthodox Christian theology is notable for its consistent interest in this question, and over the last century has offered to the West a wealth of theological insight on the matter, drawn from both the resources of its Byzantine theological heritage as well as its living interaction with Western theological and philosophical currents. In this regard, the important themes of personhood, deification, epektasis, apophaticism, and divine energies have been elaborated with much success by Orthodox theologians; but not without controversy. This work addresses the question of human perfection in Orthodox theology via a retrieval of the sources, examining in turn the thought of leading representatives of the Byzantine theological tradition: St Maximus the Confessor, St Theodore the Studite, St Symeon the New Theologian, and St Gregory Palamas. The overarching argument of this study is that in order to present an Orthodox Christian understanding of human perfection which remains true to its Byzantine inheritance, supreme emphasis must be placed on the doctrine of Christ, especially on the significance and import of Christ’s humanity. The intention of this work is thus to keep the creative approach to human destiny in Orthodox theology firmly moored to its theological past.

Abstract:
Terrorism is first and foremost viewed as a matter of security policy; however, its emergence, perception, effects, prevention and mitigation actually involve a multitude of societal sectors as well as academic fields, which also means that numerous academics, practitioners and decision-makers are in a position to contribute to analysing and countering terrorism. This handbook serves as the first German-language reference work on terrorism studies, capturing the complexity of this subject in its entirety. By using theories and perspectives from various academic disciplines, the handbook encourages scholars and students to apply their expertise to the field of terrorism studies and to emphasise interdisciplinary work.
