Abstract:
John Coltrane; one of the most influential and important musicians and composers of the 20th century; began to inspire jazz musicians and American poets in the 1960s with the Black Arts Movement poets. His music was interpreted and used for the promotion of political ideas in the poetics of Amiri Baraka; Sonia Sanchez; Askia Muhammad Toure; Larry Neal and others. This is the political Coltrane poetry. On the other hand; Coltrane’s music inspired another kind of poets; the musical poets; which began to emerge in the 1970s. In this case; the poetry reflects the true nature of Coltrane’s spiritual music quest. The poets belonging to this group; like Michael S. Harper; William Matthews; Jean Valentine; Cornelius Eady; Philip Levine; Nathaniel Mackey and others; go beyond politics; beyond race or gender. The paper will examine the first type of the Coltrane poetry; where Coltrane’s music was used to promote the political ideas of the Black Art Movement in connection with the political movement of Malcolm X. These poets changed; rearticulated and shifted Coltrane’s spiritually musical message towards the principles of the black nationalism.

Jeffrey, Johnson Kirstin Elizabeth. "Rooted in all its story, more is meant than meets the ear : a study of the relational and revelational nature of George MacDonald's mythopoeic art." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/1887.

Full text
Abstract:
Scholars and storytellers alike have deemed George MacDonald a great mythopoeic writer, an exemplar of the art. Examination of this accolade by those who first applied it to him proves it profoundly theological: for them a mythopoeic tale was a relational medium through which transformation might occur, transcending boundaries of time and space. The implications challenge much contemporary critical study of MacDonald, for they demand that his literary life and his theological life cannot be divorced if either is to be adequately assessed. Yet they prove consistent with the critical methodology MacDonald himself models and promotes. Utilizing MacDonald’s relational methodology evinces his intentional facilitating of Mythopoesis. It also reveals how oversights have impeded critical readings both of MacDonald’s writing and of his character. It evokes a redressing of MacDonald’s relationship with his Scottish cultural, theological, and familial environment – of how his writing is a response that rises out of these, rather than, as has so often been asserted, a mere reaction against them. Consequently it becomes evident that key relationships, both literary and personal, have been neglected in MacDonald scholarship – relationships that confirm MacDonald’s convictions and inform his writing, and the examination of which restores his identity as a literature scholar. Of particular relational import in this reassessment is A.J. Scott, a Scottish visionary intentionally chosen by MacDonald to mentor him in a holistic Weltanschauung. Little has been written on Scott, yet not only was he MacDonald’s prime influence in adulthood, but he forged the literary vocation that became MacDonald’s own. Previously unexamined personal and textual engagement with John Ruskin enables entirely new readings of standard MacDonald texts, as does the textual engagement with Matthew Arnold and F.D. Maurice. These close readings, informed by the established context, demonstrate MacDonald’s emergence, practice, and intent as a mythopoeic writer.

Wang, Wei. "Etude des mécanismes de recristallisation de nouveaux alliages à base de Ni." Phd thesis, Université Paris Sud - Paris XI, 2014. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-01024285.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This book is essentially a commentary on John Locke’s masterwork, his An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, which is the foundational work of classical Empiricism. It aims to be accessible to students who are reading Locke for the first time, to be a useful research tool for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, and to make a contribution to Locke scholarship. It is designed to be read alongside the Essay, but does not presuppose familiarity with it. It expounds and critically discusses the main theses and arguments of each of the Essay’s four books, on the innatism that Locke opposes, the origin and classification of ideas, language and meaning, and knowledge, respectively. It analyzes Locke’s influential explorations of related topics, including primary and secondary qualities, substance, identity, personal identity, free will, nominal and real essence, and external-world skepticism, among others. It is written in an analytical style that strives for clarity and that offers step-by-step reconstructions of Locke’s arguments. It references and engages with relevant work of other major philosophers and Locke commentators, including, among others, Descartes, Leibniz, Berkeley, Hume, Kant, Thomas Reid, John Yolton, James Gibson, R. M. Chisholm, Michael Ayers, John Perry, John Mackie, Roger Woolhouse, Saul Kripke, Jonathan Bennett, E. J. Lowe, Vere Chappell, Samuel Rickless, Galen Strawson, Gideon Yaffe, and Matthew Stuart.

Abstract:
Figure, or shape, has long been ensconced in modern philosophy as a primary or essential quality of matter. Descartes, Malebranche, Hobbes, and Boyle all apparently endorsed the Lockean claim that shape is “in Bodies whether we perceive them or no” (Locke, [1700] 1975, p. 140). In addition, most seventeenth-century philosophers endorsed the inference that because shape is primary, it is one of the “ultimate, irreducible explanatory principles” (Dijksterhuis, 1961, p. 433; cf. Ihde, 1964, p. 28). Locke has often been read in this way, and in Origins of Forms and Qualities, Boyle claims the “sensible qualities . . . are but the effects or consequents of the . . . primary affections of matter,” one of which is figure (quoted in Harré, 1964, p. 80). Little appears to have changed. Most analytic philosophers and realist-minded philosophers of science “would endorse a distinction between primary and secondary qualities” (Smith, 1990, p. 221). Campbell (1972, p. 219) endorses the claim that “shape, size and solidity are generally held to be primary,” even though he argues that “the philosophy of primary and secondary qualities” is confused. Mackie (1976, p. 18) discounts solidity but endorses spatial properties and motion as “basic” physical features of matter. Most philosophers also endorse the inference to the explanatory character of the primary qualities. Mackie (1976, p. 25) asserts spatial properties are “starting points of explanation.” Boyd (1989, pp. 10-11) claims “realists agree” that “the factors which govern the behavior . . . of substances are the fundamental properties of the insensible corpuscles of which they are composed.” As befits our current situation, explanation purportedly flows from spatial microstructure. A body “possesses a certain potential only because it actually possesses a certain property (e.g., its molecular structure)” (Lange, 1994, pp. 109-110). Even Putnam, who argues all properties are Lockean secondaries, claims powers “have an explanation . . . in the particular microstructure” of matter (Putnam, 1981, p. 58).

Abstract:
This paper investigated the effect of hydrogen (H2) addition on the exhaust emissions of a 2004 Mack MP7 355E diesel engine. As expected, the addition of H2 substantially reduced the emissions of particulate matter (PM), unburned hydrocarbon (HC), and carbon dioxide (CO2). However, the effect of H2 addition on the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) depended on the amount of H2 added and the engine load. When preliminarily measured using the 13-mode European Stationary Cycle (ESC), the addition of 2% and 4% (vol. % in intake mixture) H2 significantly increased nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions and slightly reduced nitric oxide (NO) emissions. In comparison, the H2 addition only minimally affected NOx emissions. The detailed effects of H2 addition on the exhaust emissions were investigated for various loads at 1200 rpm. The addition of H2 at low load mildly influenced NOx emissions, with the exception of 10% load operation. Adding over 4% H2 at 10% load began to reduce NOx emissions. When operated at medium to high load, the addition of a relatively small amount of H2 slightly reduced NOx emissions. The expected increase in NOx emissions was observed only with the addition of a large amount of H2. When operated at full load, the addition of H2 had negligible effect on NOx emissions. In a few cases, a minor change in H2 flow rate suddenly increased the emissions of NOx. By further increasing or reducing the amount of H2 added, NOx emissions resumed to their expected values. This discrepancy was attributed to the unexpected change in EGR flow rate. Based on the data obtained, it seems infeasible to substantially reduce the exhaust emissions of diesel engine through the addition of a small amount of H2 such as that produced on-board using a small H2O electrolyzer.

Abstract:
Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are well assessed aftertreatment devices, equipping almost every modern diesel engine on the market to comply with today’s stringent emission standards. However, an accurate estimation of soot loading, which is instrumental to ensuring optimal performance of the whole engine-after-treatment assembly is still a major challenge. In fact, several highly coupled physical-chemical phenomena occur at the same time, and a vast number of engine and exhaust dependent parameters make this task even more daunting. This challenge may be solved with models characterized by different degrees of detail (0-D to 3-D) depending on the specific application. However, the use of real-time, but accurate enough models, may be of primary importance to face with advanced control challenges, such as the integration of the DPF with the engine or other critical aftertreatment components (Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) or other NOx control components), or to properly develop model-based OBD sensors. This paper aims at addressing real time DPF modeling issues with special regard to key parameter settings, by using the 1D code ExhAUST (Exhaust Aftertreatment Unified Simulation Tool), developed jointly by the University of Rome Tor Vergata and West Virginia University. ExhAUST is characterized by a novel and unique full analytical treatment of the wall that allows faithful representation with high degree of detail the evolution of soot loading inside the porous matrix. Numerical results are compared with experimental data gathered at West Virginia University (WVU) engine laboratory using a Mack heavy-duty diesel engine coupled to a Johnson Matthey CCRT (DOC, Diesel Oxidation Catalyst+CDPF, Catalyzed DPF) aftertreatment system. To that aim, the engine test bench has been equipped with a DPF weighing setup to track soot load over a specifically developed engine operating procedure. Obtained results indicate that the model is accurate enough to capture soot loading and back pressure histories with regard to different steady state engine operating points, without needing any tuning procedure of the key parameters. Thus, the use of ExhAUST for application to advanced after-treatment control appears promising at this stage.

Abstract:
Emissions from diesel marine engines are significant contributors to the emissions inventories of commercial ports. Prior to 1998, these emissions were unregulated and current EPA regulations apply predominantly to new engines. Considering that the useful life of marine engines in work vessels, such as tugboats, may be 20 years or longer, retrofit emission reduction technologies are needed for these legacy engines. Oxides of nitrogen (NOx) have negative health and environmental impacts and are difficult to reduce substantially without aftertreatment. A scrubber system for NOx reduction was proposed; the presented research focuses on the verification of operating principles and the quantification of possible NOx reduction from this system. Major elements of the proposed scrubber system are exhaust heat exchangers, a catalyzed particulate filter (CPF), a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), and a packed bed wet scrubber. The system works on the principle of absorption of NOx species into water. The majority of engine-out NOx is in the form of nitric oxide (NO) which is relatively insoluble in water. A CPF and a DOC are utilized to convert up to 80% of the NO into nitrogen dioxide, NO2. NO2 and NO exist in equilibrium with N2O3 and N2O4, species of NOx that are highly soluble in water. The use of a CPF and DOC also reduces carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and particulate matter, reducing possible scrubber contamination. The scrubber liquor operates on a closed loop with zero discharge, its final composition is weak nitric acid; a byproduct of capturing the NOx. Research to support this design was conducted on a Mack E7 298 kW, 12 liter engine operating over 8 steady state points. Modal NOx absorption ranged from 4–66%. Cycle average NOx absorption ranged from 15–58%. It was concluded that NOx absorption varies with gas residence time, absorption surface area, temperature, and NOx concentration. Separately, a system was constructed and operated to convert the stored concentrated NOx into diatomic nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water.
