Abstract:
ABSTRACTMatthias Alexander Castrén (1813–1852), a great Finnish researcher and fieldworker, the first professor of the Finnish language, undertook a vast range of studies, geographically from Norwegian Lapland to Siberia and in subjects from linguistics to ethnology. His extensive work in the Russian north made him one of the principal figures of Siberian and Finno-Ugrian studies. Castrén's pioneering contributions in Turkology, Mongolian studies and archaeology are also noteworthy. He spent almost ten years on expeditions outside Finland and during his short life, he died at the age of 39, he managed to collect a vast amount of material, which is set out in 32 volumes of his manuscripts. However, his name is less known than are the names of some of his prominent friends. In English there are only few comments on his travels and work and these are in the context of the history of Finnish science in the 19th century. Published materials of Castrén's work include two volumes in Finnish translated from Swedish, six volumes in Swedish, and twelve volumes in German. Castrén was born in a period which is often regarded as a turning point in Finnish history and as a key period in the formation of the Finnish nation. Presenting an overview of different fields of Castrén's research, this article analyses his scientific contribution along two lines: in the context of the rising national awareness in Finland in the 19th century and of the mainstream developments in the scientific scene of this time. Based on Castrén's travel diaries, correspondence and lectures, the article seeks to contribute to understanding the historical aspects that shaped this great researcher situated as he was between three national traditions of his time: his writing was mostly in Swedish, his research activities were mainly carried out on behalf of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and yet he is most prized as a pioneer of Finnish linguistics, ethnography, archaeology and other disciplines.

Abstract:
The Alexander Technique is a method that emerged as a result of Actor Frederick Matthias Alexander’s work on himself to solve the problems he had with his voice during his performance. This technique, which was effective for himself, rapidly became widespread because it was tried by different people over time and positive results were obtained. Today, it is effective not only for music but also for people from different disciplines to use their bodies more comfortably and thus have a natural posture. In this sense, in the study, ten different instructors working in various locations were selected as the study group to reach the findings related to the use of the Alexander Technique and the results of the technique in flute lessons given in the music departments of higher education institutions in Turkey. Framed by the researcher, interview questions with expert opinions were asked, and the data obtained were tabulated and presented with the content analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods.

Cole, Amanda Jane. "Marjorie Barstow, John Dewey and the Alexander Technique: A philosophical constellation, or “Variations of the Teacher’s Art”." Thesis, Griffith University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365373.

Full text
Abstract:
This project examines one strand of Alexander Technique1 pedagogy: the approach pioneered by the noted American Alexander teacher, Marjorie Barstow, the first graduate of F. Matthias Alexander’s training course. Barstow’s approach is favoured by performers because of its immediate and direct application to real and challenging situations. At the end of her life, from the 1970s to the early 1990s, she attracted thousands of students to her workshops, and many of her long-term students have since become world-renowned teachers themselves. Barstow’s detractors have argued, however, that because her teaching and teacher-training methods varied from mainstream approaches, she neither taught the Alexander Technique nor trained teachers. This opinion assumes a limited and even tendentious approach to interpreting Alexander’s legacy. One reason for the contrary opinion is the failure to view Alexander’s Technique in a wider intellectual and pedagogical context. I address this problem by situating Barstow’s pedagogy in the context of educational and philosophical theories being developed contemporaneously with and in line with Alexander’s own discoveries, theory and pedagogy. In particular, Barstow’s work is examined in relation to the “pragmatic” turn inphilosophy observable in the thought of John Dewey, who involved himself directly with the Alexander Technique and its founder. I consider Barstow, Dewey and F.M. Alexander for the first time as educationalists, practitioners and thinkers who are linked by a common concern with the pragmatic ends of philosophy.

Abstract:
Dasheng Leow of the National Tsing Hua University used (Eur. J. Org. Chem. 2014, 7347) photolysis to activate the air oxidation of hydrazine to generate diimide, that then reduced 1 selectively to 2. Kevin M. Peese of Bristol-Myers Squibb effected (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 4444) ring-closing metathesis of 3 followed by in situ reduction to form 4. Jitendra K. Bera of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur effected (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 13987) gentle oxidative cleavage of cyclooctene 5 to the dialdehyde 6. Arumugam Sudalai of the National Chemical Laboratory observed (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 5674) high regioselectivity in the oxidation of the alkene 7 to the ketone 8. Hao Xu of Georgia State University also observed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 13186) high regioselectivity in the oxidation of the alkene 9 with 10, leading to the urethane 11. Justin Du Bois of Stanford University developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 13506) mild conditions for the net double amination of the alkene 12 with 13, leading to 14. Jiaxi Xu and Pingfan Li of the Beijing University of Chemical Technology devised (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 6036) a protocol for the allylic thiomethylation of an alkene with 16, converting 15 to 17. Matthias Beller of the Leibniz-Institüt für Katalyse combined (Chem. Eur. J. 2014, 20, 15692) hydroformylation, aldol condensation, and reduction to convert the alkene 18 to the ketone 19. Phil S. Baran of Scripps/La Jolla added (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 14382) the diazo dienone 21 to the alkene 20 to give, after exposure to HCl, the arylated product 22. Markus R. Heinrich of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg employed (Chem. Eur. J. 2014, 20, 15344) Selectfluor as both an oxidizing and a fluorinating agent in the related addition of 24 to 23 to give 25. Debabrata Maiti at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay activated (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014, 136, 13602) the ortho position of 27, then added that intermediate to 26 to give 28.

Abstract:
The reduction of azobenzene 1 with catalyst 2 was reported (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 11330) by Alexander T. Radosevich at Pennsylvania State University, representing a unique example of a nontransition metal-based two-electron redox catalysis platform. Wolfgang Kroutil at the University of Graz found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 6713) that diketone 4 was converted to piperidinium 5 with very high stereoselectivity using a transaminase followed by reduction over Pd/C. Dennis P. Curran at the University of Pittsburgh reported (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 4540) that NHC-borane 7 is a convenient reducing agent for aldehydes and ketones, showing selectivity for the former as in the monoreduction of 6 to 8. A catalytic reduction of esters to ethers with Fe3(CO)12 and TMDS, as in the conversion of 9 to 10, was developed (Chem. Commun. 2012, 48, 10742) by Matthias Beller at the Leibniz-Institute for Catalysis. Meanwhile, iridium catalysis was used (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 9422) by Maurice Brookhart at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for the reduction of esters to aldehydes with diethylsilane (e.g., 11 to 12). As an impressive example of selective reduction, Ohyun Kwon at UCLA reported (Org. Lett. 2012, 14, 4634) the conversion of ester 13 to aldehyde 14, leaving the malonate moiety intact. The cobalt complex 16 was found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 12102) by Susan K. Hanson at Los Alamos National Laboratory to be an effective catalyst for C=O, C=N, and C=C bond hydrogenation, including the conversion of alkene 15 to 17. The use of frustrated Lewis pair catalysis for the low-temperature hydrogenation of alkenes such as 18 was developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 10164) by Stefan Grimme at the University of Bonn and Jan Paradies the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Guanidinium nitrate was found (Chem. Commun. 2012, 48, 6583) by Kandikere Ramaiah Prabhu at the Indian Institute of Science to catalyze the hydrazine-based reduction of alkenes such as 20. The hydrogenation of thiophenes is difficult for a number of reasons, but now Frank Glorius at the University of Münster has developed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2012, 134, 15241) an effective system for the highly enantioselective catalytic hydrogenation of thiophenes and benzothiophenes, including 22.
