Full textAs part of the critical edition project of the Incomplete Work on Matthew (Opus imperfectum in Matthaeum, OIM), the present thesis analyzes the links between this anonymous commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, coming from a Riminian subordinationist environment (i.e. “Homean”), and other Latin exegetical works on the same gospel. After recalling, in a state of research, the main characteristics of the corpus taken into account, we carried out a continued exegetical comparison relating to the section Mt 1-8, corresponding to the first part of the OIM, with the fragments remains of the commentary on Matthew by Origen (3rd century), the commentaries on Matthew by Fortunatian of Aquileia and Hilary of Poitiers (mid-4th century), those of Jerome and Chromatius of Aquileia (late 4th century), and the texts by an anonymous Latin author from late Antiquity known as pseudo-Origen. This study was accompanied by a stylistic comparison on certain aspects (appellations of Christ, exegetical vocabulary, personal marks), highlighting the profound originality of the OIM in this regard. The results of this double comparison confirm the deep link of the OIM with Origen's Commentary on Matthew, an influence that the anonymous author shares with Jerome. Furthermore, our study shows for the first time the use in the OIM of the Commentary on Matthew by Chromatius of Aquileia. Finally, the results of the stylistic comparison, accompanied by a theological analysis of the translator's positions, tend to confirm that it is indeed to the author of the OIM that we owe the ancient Latin translation of the Commentary on Matthew of Origen

Full textThis study deals with parables’ discourse related in chapter 13 of Matthew’s Gospel. It questiones the way this corpus presents some values to the readers. In the first part, the research establishes the main interpretation’s axes of Mt 13 : redaction and sources, structure, attendances and parables’ fonction. This state of the art proposes to read Mt 13 following a dynamic relation with the reader. In the second part, a synchronic exegesis, then a diachronic exegesis are proposed and both specify the question of values based on the parabolic language and his theme, the Kingdom of heaven. In the third part, Vincent Jouve’s method of analysis (University of Reims) is applied to Matthew 13 : on the basis of narrative semiotic, it aims to determine the value-effect of a text, i.e. its ideologic system. At this stage, the study highlightes the desire’s valorization expressed by the parabolist, i.e. a truth of existential nature led by the story. A re-reading of the discourse in terms of effects is then proposed and measures the parable effect in text and out of text. Excluded from his usual ideologic system, the reader of Matthew 13 must indeed be confronted to parables : these promote the imaginery and make discover the real. Touched by the text, the reader can live a parabolic experience. This experience cannot be totally included by the langage but it leaves clues in the story. During the appropriation work of the reader, a meeting with the text can happen and "the word of Kingdom" can be received

Full textMatthew of Aquasparta (v. 1240-1302) could be seen for many reasons as an emblematic figure at the end of the thirteenth century. He was a master of theology at the University of Paris and wrote many works ; as a Franciscan, he was elected as Minister general of the Order ; he was nominated cardinal by Nicolas IV and was one of the most faithful allies of Bonifacius VIII. However, in spite of his position as a master of theology and as a cardinal, Matthew of Aquasparta did not become a famous historical figure and only became acknowledged at the beginning of the twentieth century. His work as a theologian became more and more important in the studies of historians and medievalist philosophers, thanks to the editions of his Disputed questions published by the Quaracchi brothers ; the interpretations became more and more refined : historians considered him as a “neo-Augustinian”, but they recently wondered about his place among the contemporary Franciscans, his links with Thomas Aquinas and his connection with the Aristotelian tradition. This work is based on an edition of his six Quodlibeta. It is completed by some studies and commentaries which throw light on his life and on different sides of his work. The master’s Quodlibeta are kept on an autograph and on a copy corrected by Matthew himself ; his manuscripts are important testimonies to study the process of writing and the work of a theologian master. The variety of sources and the diversity of themes in his Quodlibeta (the unicity of substantial form or the ethics of advocates and juges) enables us to understand his historical importance better and to clarify his part in the intellectual and political context at the end of the thirteenth century

Full textThe aim of this work is to synthesize model materials (epitaxial thin films) of ternary ceramics called MAX phases, in order to study their behavior under ion irradiation. To follow the microstructural modifications induced by ion irradiation, we used electron energy loss spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in addition to X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques. The growth of Cr2AlC and Cr2GeC epitaxial thin films was achieved by magnetron sputtering whereas the synthesis of textured Ti2AlN layers was obtained by high temperature plasma nitriding of multilayers with an average stœchiometry Ti2:Al1:N1. The electronic structure of unirradiated films of de Cr2AlC, Cr2GeC, Ti2AlC, Ti3AlC2 and Ti2AlN was then characterized. Experimental spectra were interpreted from ab initio simulations. This study shows that structural information may be obtained from fine structures of core electron excitation edges. After irradiation, the study of the C-K and Al-K near-edge fine structures in Ti3AIC2 evidences that Ti6C octahedra layers are very resistant to irradiation damage and on the contrary, aluminium layers are strongly disordered. A similar behavior is suggested for Ti2AlC, Ti2AlN and also partly for Cr2AlC. Though titanium based materials are still crystalline after irradiation at high fluence, chronium based compounds rapidly amorphize. It is evidenced that the initial crystalline structure is recovered after post-irradiation annealing

Full textTwo goals have been pursued in this work : the first one deals with literary exegesis, the second one with methodology. On the exegetical side, chapters 27 and 28 of Matthew's Gospel are analyzed using a semiotic model developed by Jacques Geninasca (University of Zurich). This model fits into the French school of semiotics founded by A.J. Greimas. Itsaim is to build a text's meaning by an interpretive procedure understood as an act of enunciation. Comparison of results with those produced by other exegetical methods (mainly the historical-critical method) assesses the adequacyof the procedures and concepts introduced by Geninasca. On the methodological level, a development of the model is proposed in order to take into account the peculiar status of the texts studied. Since the use of critical methods in the biblical field, the so-called scholarly reading of the Scriptures is disconnected from the believer's reading. Historical exegesisreads texts according to their ability to represent reality and try to determine the context where they originated : the rationality behind this method detaches the object of study from the reader. The proposed extension to the Geninasca's model aims to define, within the framework of a semiotic reading, both a « saisie » and a « croire » fit to describe the interpellative dimension of the biblical stories

Full textThis work proposes to develop the metaphysical paradoxes contained in the saint Matthew Passion by J. S. Bach. Both liturgical work and opera transported out of its stage, the Passion has the metaphysical project to bring bodies to effective salvation, that is to say to substitute itself to the liturgy in order to constitute a new man. The Passion, thanks to the spectacular agency of the instruments and the voices, will offer to that man a body entirely constituted by the affect of joy. By examining that affect, its ambiguous relation to spectacular pleasure, we may suggest a materialistic interpretation, not only of the theological matters contained in the Passion, but also of the question of transcendence

Full textThe rise of narrative criticism raises the question of the place and function of Jesus’ discourses in the Gospel of Matthew. If the recent readings have sometimes had the effect of minimizing their importance for the benefit of the plot, it is difficult to avoid noting that they contribute significantly to the elaboration of a portrait of Jesus and the disciples’ community. Paradoxically, it’s also from the side of narrative criticism that a renewed reading of these texts could intervene nowadays. The argument is the following : the mission discourse (Mt. 9. 35-11. 1) is devised to play a formative role for the readers’ community. This community, through the collective character of the Twelve, is drawn into a non-geographic movement. After having studied preliminary points such as the place and function of the discourses in the plan of the first Gospel (chap. I) and having analysed the situation in the field of research (chap. II), we shall study, by means of narrative criticism, the figure of the disciples as it is painted at the beginning of the discourse (chap. III). Three themes of the tenth chapter will be chosen and analysed in their narrative context : household/family, universality and violence (chap. IV). They will constitute the background for the exegesis of the discourse which will be read in the perspective of the study of the engendered movement (chap. V). The synthesis and the conclusion will show that the movement bears on the Christological perspective, on the soteriological perspective and on the connection with the time of the mission (chap. VI)
Doane, Sébastien, and Sébastien Doane.
Reader-response is a literary theory which studies the reception of literary works and the role of the reader in their interpretation. Inspired by Stanley Fish’s post-formalist version of affective stylistics and Robert Hurley’s adaptation of that method for the study of biblical literature, this thesis shifts attention from the responses of theoretically constructed readers (implicit, model, ideal…) to the responses of a “real reader” to the narrative of the origins of Jesus in Matt. 1-2. What effects does Matt. 1-2 produce? This research question is answered by using an innovative methodological approach: the author describes what happens as one slows down the reading event, reporting on the effects produced by each successive word, phrase and sentence. The “text as object” dissolves in a dynamic reading experience which takes place in time, generating suspense, curiosity and surprise. The description of the reading experience shows the transformations produced at the very moment the reader gives concrete expression to the text by his interpretive act. Slowing down the reading process brings the essential, active role of the reader into view in the operation of such textual devices and strategies as irony, metaphor and the self-consuming artifact. Historically, the great diversity of reading experiences recorded in successive exegeses may partially be explained by the many gaps of Matt. 1-2. Among the ambiguous elements explored are: the presence of five women in a patriarchal genealogy (1:1-16), the number of generations (1:17) that is different from the list of generations (1:2-16), the genealogical discontinuity between Joseph and Jesus (1:16), the equivocal "justice" of Joseph (1:19), the nature of the star followed by the magi (2:2,9), and the quotation "Nαζωραῖος κληθήσεται" which has no known source (2:23). A review of available research underscores the considerable confusion that this text has stirred up. Instead of filling in textual aporias, this thesis proposes to look at the answers of the "real readers" that are Church Fathers and exegetes of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Their writings are responses to the textual devices of the read text. These responses are not presented with a view to finding the one right interpretation, but in order to understand the effects this text produces in readers. Based on the effects produced by the text, it appears that from the first verses, the Gospel according to Matthew seeks to disorient its readers, preparing them for the disconcerting narrative that follows. Like an enigma, the genealogy throws its readers off balance as they begin their quest for Jesus and his origins. Matt. 1:1-17 subverts Davidic messianism by revisiting the history of Israel to propose Jesus as a Messiah, both from David and different from him. One of the innovative aspects of this thesis is to pay attention to the ways in which these male characters express their masculinities. While most studies merely scratch the context of the Old Testament quoted in Matt. 1:17-2:23, this thesis proposes to analyze the effects of the interaction between the narrative context in Matthew and the narrative contexts of the works cited. In an original way, these quotations are presented as metalepses. Using a few words, they encourage readers to think of the complete narrative world from which these words are drawn. This procedure is contrary to the usual interpretative strategy which treats these quotations as "hook words" within an interpretive model centered on the prediction and fulfillment of prophecies. The results of this intertextual study underscores the fact that the relationship between text and intertext modifies our understanding of both. Studies which concentrate on the “inscribed reader” do not to justice to the richness of the reading experience. The role of the real reader as a creator of meaning has been underestimated in biblical studies. The dialogue between real readers, past and present, emphasizes the interpretative plurality that makes it possible to discover the effects of the story of the origins of Jesus in Matt. 1-2, highlighting some of the possible relations between this text and reader.

Full textThis thesis is the first monograph devoted to Quaestiones euangeliorum by Augustine of Hippo: noted from interviews with an anonymous interlocutor, edited first without his knowledge, Augustine reviewed his work and made a second edition in two books. The first volume of the thesis contains the full commentary on the hundred Quaestiones on the Gospels of Matthew and Luke : unique exegeses for one third of the verses and original exegeses for a fifth of the Quaestiones. In the introduction is made the synthesis of the informations from the prologue, Retractationes and detailed studies of each Quaestio. First the circumstances of the composition are established. A hypothesis for dating the composition as well as the reviewed Augustine’s edition is advanced. Then the portrait of the interlocutor is drawn, as it emerges from the various gathered observations, and a name is proposed. Afterwards we identify the sources of Augustine’s exegesis in this work. In addition, the biblical text that served as support during discussions between Augustine and his interlocutor is investigated. Finally, we study the reception of Quaestiones euangeliorum until the twelfth and the thirteenth centuries included, that is until the success of two very important anthologies, the Glossa ordinaria of Anselm of Laon, and the Catena Aurea of Thomas Aquinas. The second volume of the thesis contains the Latin text of Quaestiones euangeliorum with a French annotated translation opposite the original text

Full textThe thesis is revisiting the position of the patriarchate of Constantinople towards the last Byzantine emperors and the first ottoman sultans. The starting point is an analysis of Matthew Blastares 'Syntagma, a code of civil and canon law which proposes a subtle hierarchy between the political and the religious power. This code became progressively an official document of the patriarchate, enjoying until the 17th century a large diffusion in Byzantium, in the Balkans, in Romanian and Russian principalities. Using this work, the patriarchate attempted to reinforce its rank in relation with the Orthodox states and the ottoman empire. The romanian principalities, preserving their existence under the Ottoman suzerainty and producing a political literature influenced by this code, are a privileged case study for analysing the continuities and the discontinuities suffered by the patriarchate in this period of transition

Full textThis doctoral thesis shows that in Sermones in Matthaeum the biblical interpretations developed by Augustine of Hippo were selected in order to comply with a pastoral adaptation to the double historical and liturgical preaching context. Established on the basis of the Maurists’ thematic classification, the corpus contains sermons preached in different places between 393 and 430; it is therefore suitable for evaluating these adaptations. Chapter 1 gives a critical survey of the contextual data (historical, geographical, sociological and liturgical) concerning these sermons, to be taken as potential, adaptable building blocks; chapter 2 shows that the biblical text, often in Old Latin forms, has an African substrate. Chapter 3 to 6 analyse the exegesis of about twenty sermons selected for their reflexive dimension, in order to inductively question the reasons for the exegetical adaptations. The analyses compare the interpretations of the commented text with those present in other Augustinian works and in the Patristic tradition, and integrate a rhetorical approach. Like the sermons which develop it, this homiletic exegesis lies at the intersection of God’s Word (chapter 3 and 4) and men’s answers (chapter 5 and 6). It assumes the historic context in which it is developed and penetrates the dynamic of the liturgy from which it gets the subject of its comment and the aim of its orientation, so that the res which it conveys in a quasi sacramental way through the uerba of the preacher bears fruit within the listeners. This doctoral thesis also includes a bibliography and four annexes: an identification file about the Sermones in Matthaeum and its summary, a summary table of Augustinian occurrences to be found in the analysed quotations and the list of the liturgical readings from Matthew’s Gospel

Full textFollowing a status quaestionis and some methodological considerations, this workconsiders the seven occurrences of the word in the course of the Matthean narrative, in theirclose and large context, so as to take into account their premiss, consequences and framework. Each passage is examined through a narrative analysis method of exegesis. All along the narrative, Matthew goes along his reader to take him, via successivetouches, all the way through a change in understanding (metanoia). At the end of this process, the reader can take it up again with what he understood of all the concepts at stake. Thus, righteousness) remains absolutely necessary to enter the Kingdom,as it was in the First Alliance. Yet, it does not depend any more upon an effort made to applyall the instructions of the Law, which still retains its validity to make life possible on earth; itdepends upon the faith one puts in the announcement of the Heavenly Kingdom, a trust thatmay be manifested through the acceptance of baptism, discipleship and prayer. Thisrighteousness, fully accomplished in Jesus’ baptism, is a gift of the Heavenly Father whowants to see his children worthy of his Kingdom. It goes along the gift of the Kingdom. Oneis hungry and thirsty for it; it needs to be always looked for. It allows anyone to considerhimself as a child of the Father and to make Him the central point of his life, and thus toconsider other human beings as brothers rather than enemies
