Abstract:
- City and Space in Maurice Halbwachs' thought, In Italy as well as in France, Maurice Halbwachs is still considered a specialist of collective memory and little attention is paid to his theoretical contributions to European urban sociology. Nevertheless, a great part of Halbwachs's reflection was centred on the development of the city, particularly on the spatial dimension of social facts. The aim of the present essay is therefore to reconstruct the development of Halbwachs's thought on city and space by a close examination, in chronological order, of his major writings on these subjects. We shall thus analyse the main research steps which have taken Halbwachs from the study of social morphology to a more and more accurate definition of space as a sociological category. Key words: social morphology, city, Maurice Halbwachs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In his book Twilight Memories Andreas Huyssen (1995) famously described contemporary Western culture as 'a culture of amnesia'. That concern about social memory is evident in many areas of contemporary discourse. Social memory's confabulatory, subjective, and ambiguous nature makes its analysis an arena of conflicting and diverse opinions. Drawing on Maurice Halbwachs' concept of 'collective memory', and its use in more recent sociological studies, this study uses preaching theory and practice as a way of addressing those wider memory concerns in the life of the church. In particular, the profound challenge of memory work to Christianity's insistence on remembrance as the foundation of its authenticity is examined through contemporary homiletic practice. It is argued that, alongside the familiar didactic, cognitive, epistemological and contextual categories employed in preaching practice, the current crisis of memory requires a new emphasis on memory maintenance. Sermons are presented as mnemonic events essential to the ongoing living tradition of the faith.

Abstract:
This study aims to perform a systematic and theoretical reconstruction of the theory of collective memory of the French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs, which is sparsely contained in his three books on the subject: Les Cadres de la Mémoire Sociaux (1925), La Topographie des Léngendaire Evangiles en Terre Sainte (1941) and the posthumous La Mémoire Collective (1950). In order to accomplish this aim, we tracked and reconstructed the intellectual scene of that time that dealt with the subject of memory within the Humanities, Psychology, and Philosophy. Moreover, we analyzed Halbwachs main intellectual influences, namely, Durkheim and Bergson, in order to demonstrate the problems that he sought to answer. The dissertations core is the reconstruction of the theory of collective memory, tracking and reconstructing it´s main concepts: collective memory, individual memory and the groups. We demonstrated the articulation of these concepts in a historical case: the formation of the Christian collective memory (which is also examined by Halbwachs in his writings). Once the theory was rebuilt and demonstrated, we defined the concept of ´collective memory´ contrasting it with other terms such as, ´social memory´, ´cultural memory´, ´tradition´, ´myth´, ´history´, and ´knowledge´. Lastly we tried to match the halbwachsian conception of memory to actual theories of mind.

Abstract:
This thesis reconsiders Maurice Halbwachs' theory of collective memory in terms of rhetoric. My purpose is to examine specifically how fading generations conform the present to the past as they fight to maintain and defend their collective identities. Although rhetoric and memory studies have often focused on the complex matters of national collectives, Halbwachs was also concerned with the individual and his or her interaction among those groups that matter in everyday living and memory's role in generational shifts that slowly transform culture. Halbwachs' theory helps determine exactly how attempts at conflict resolution are sometimes guarded defenses against threats to one's personal and collective identity. In contrast to the generally accepted use of memory as selectively adapting the past for present purposes, this protection of identity may require the present to remain faithful to one's past. To examine how memory and rhetoric are complementary, I draw a parallel between Maurice Halbwachs' collective memory theory and Jim Corder's notion of individual identity as historical narrative. Then, in further retracing Kenneth Burke's influence on Corder's work, I also compare Halbwachs' social constructionist view of memory to Burke's theories of symbolicity and identification. Finally, I apply these theories to the recent 2012 debate in Ybor City, Florida over the Spanish spelling of Seventh Avenue in which passing generations struggle to preserve their identity and sense of belonging in the changing social milieu. In demonstrating how people seek a more permanent sense of identity articulated through memory, this debate offers an alternative to the theory of identity as a rhetorical performance negotiated in the present.

Abstract:
In his work La Classe ouvrière et les niveaux de vie (1912), the French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs elaborated a theory about social classes in which he justified some hierarchy among them by proving the existence of a « central hearth» : the more integrated the classes are, the doser they are from the hearth. According to Halbwachs, the working class is the most remote from the centre because of the isolation of the worker regarding the lifeless material in front of him during his working day at the factory. By criticizing Halbwachs theory about social classes — and more precisely what I called his « conceptual model of the working class » — I tried to link my research, the working memory, to Halbwachs theory about memory (Les Cadres sociaux de la mémoire : 1925 ; La Mémoire collective : 1950). This led me to highlight — against Halbwachs — the fact that if the individual memory is different from the social or collective one, the first being a mental faculty able to rememoration, and the second a rhetorical metaphor for a transcendental social object, this social memory needs to express through individual memories, the only ones we can observe. Leaning on an empirical material, more precisely a biographic research on two generations of steelworkers in Vierzon, I was able to state that there is a third object, that I will call « memory of the collective », between the individual memory and the collective or social one, and that takes shape of a kind of trend of memory

Abstract:
This dissertation analyses the process of remembrance trough the title of Righteous among the Nations in the French case. This official award is given by the State of Israel and Yad Vashem to the non-Jews who rescued Jews in Nazi Europe. These recognitions rely on formal "testimonies" by the Jews who benefited such an help. In 2000, a French law has created a national commemoration of the "French righteous". This PhD considers the social dynamics of memory. It assesses the roles played in the process of expression of memory respectively by the institunional framework, the policy of memory and the situation of the individuals within the social space. Through this case study, the author assesses the relevance of the different concepts wich can help to think memory as an object for social sciences.
Abstract: The present thesis follows a perspective of science sociology and seeks to understand the scientific practices of researchers from an institution of the medical field, using quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Abstract:
The destiny of Durkheim's sociology after his death is not the inevitable decline some described and blamed as the result of the lack of intellectual inactivity of collaborators, busy to relentlessly defend the frail since more and more controversial position of their sociology, both from the intellectual and institutionnal point of view. The examples of Mauss, Simiand Halbwachs and Bougle prove that sociology evolved between world war I and world war II. These authors, each in his own ways, pave the way for a "collective psychology" which suppresses the hiatus Durkheim had set between the individual and society, by observing the collective psychical states shared by individuals in certain situations. However this attempt at reviewing concepts remains uncompleted. That is why the second world war may not be the break - marked by the end of durkheimism and the need to rebuild french sociology - it has often been assimilated to. Eager to face the issues of European reconstruction, criticized by a commited philosophy which denies their discipline the status of a science, impressed by an empirical social science from across the atlantic standing as a new model for research, authors such as Gurvitch, Friedmann, Stoetzel, although willing to build a new and more empirical sociology able to better comprehend the experienced meaning of human behaviours, are led to defend a French conception of their discipline. Then, they all keep an epistemological position, which somewhat reminds of the durkheimian rationalism, since it tries to put individual thougts and behaviours back in the whole society in order to understand them. In this content, the works the durkheimians started a decade ago, raising these issues for the first time, remain up to date until the end of the fifties

Abstract:
Memory and nostalgia work in complex, paradoxical ways in Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men and The Road, both haunting the main protagonists, Sheriff Ed Tom Bell and the father, as well as bringing them to crucial realizations. These men give up the traditional hero role for the more meaningful and generative image of “carrying the fire,” which unites these two novels. Carrying the fire represents a memorial and nostalgic longing for home and family. Bell and the father attain this vision because of their obsession with the past, and because of their struggle with memory and nostalgia. Memory, for these characters, has both personal and collective dimensions. Nostalgia, likewise, has a dual function, following Svetlana Boym's definition of nostalgics as being capable of restorative and reflective longing for the past. Family, or Paul Ricœur’s theory of close relations, bridges the gap between the conflicts of memory and nostalgia, acting as the means by which they understand this vision of carrying the fire while also embodying it. Additionally, the duality of both memory and nostalgia drive Bell and the father to seek for a prophetic vision, for stability in the past to deal with the threats in the present, which appears in the narrative structures of each novel.
