Abstract:
This article discusses that the business of engineering has challenges of its own. Engineer-to-order (ETO) differs from make-to-stock or make-to-order businesses primarily in the amount of designing that takes place after a firm receives an order. For either of the two make-to systems, post-order engineering is insignificant. ETO firms depend heavily on engineers and designers inside the order cycle because the machine has to be imagined, then designed and detailed, before it can be built. Handling specialty is a typical ETO manufacturer. It builds lifting and turning equipment used by everyone from automakers in Toronto to stage builders in Las Vegas. Although it makes equipment mostly of a particular kind, no two orders are exactly alike. In order to make a transition from entrepreneurial, family-owned firms to professional ones, ETO companies need to make business information available to employees throughout their organizations.

Abstract:
This dissertation thesis deals with the topic of Business Intelligence and Balanced Scorecard and its use in České odborné nakladatelství, s.r.o., a relatively small company of 29 employees, which publishes magazines about business, gastronomy, textile, foods, hotels etc. The first part of my thesis describes the BI and BSC theoretically and offers a methodical basis for the following chapters. It gives the reader a definition and structure of BI, with access to a Data Warehouse including the fundamentals of building an OLAP database. It furthermore explains what BSC is, which perspectives use and what a strategic map is. The theoretical chapters of my paper will draw conclusions about the use of BI and BSC and the links between them. The practical, hands-on, chapters continue with the actual application of BI and BSC in the afore-mentioned ČON, s.r.o. It describes the goals and ambitions of the company, which are further on divided into individual strategic goals and metrics, fragmented into perspectives of the BSC and portrayed in a strategic map. Upon analyzing the demands of the company a BI framework is created, data sources are identified, Data Warehouse are designed and brought into effect. In the end a multidimensional OLAP cube is created with MS SQL Server 2008. Finally, there is a MS Excel 2007 explanation and interpretation of the measured values (reporting), which is taken from the available sources of ČON, s.r.o. and is compared against the set strategic goals and metrics of the company. The results of this thesis are based on actual demands of the company and are ready to be implemented and used in real-life.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter reviews the theories of the corporation offered by Adam Smith, John Stuart Mill, and Karl Marx, looking at how they would answer the questions posed in the first chapter. We see that for the same reasons that Smith celebrated the “invisible hand” of the market, he was deeply skeptical of the joint-stock company. Mill and Marx, on the other hand, see in the joint-stock company the possibility of moral progress; Mill contended that joint-stock companies would give way to an economy dominated by worker cooperatives, and Marx accorded it a crucial role in the transcendence of capitalism. In the process of this overview we begin to see how firms and corporations are distinct from markets, and how one’s normative appraisal of the latter will affect the way they understand and assess the former.

Full text
Abstract:
An examination of the symbiotic relationship that existed between the Hollywood film community and horse racing, primarily between 1930 and 1960, Hollywood at the Races explores the extraordinary participation of producers, directors, and actors in the sport of kings. All three of Southern California’s major racetracks were founded in part or in whole by Hollywood luminaries: Hal Roach was cofounder of SantaAnita; Bing Crosby founded Del Mar with help from Pat O’Brien; and the Warner brother founded Hollywood Park with assistance from dozens of people in the film community. Moreover, people like Crosby, Betty Grable, Mervyn LeRoy, and Don Ameche owned racehorses, while MGM’s chief of production, Louis B. Mayer, was one of the nation’s leading owner-breeders. Racing also had an interest in Hollywood, as evidenced by the exploits of breeder-owner Jock Whitney, who helped finance David O. Selznick’s productions of GonewiththeWind and Rebecca. A horse owned by Rita Hayworth (aka the Princess Aly Khan) nearly won Europe’smost important race, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and screenwriter- producer Gene Markey became the co-owner of Calumet Farm when he married his fourth wife.During this period, Hollywood produced at least 120 racing-themed films, among them A Day at the Races, National Velvet, and Thoroughbreds Don’t Cry. Thelast two starred Mickey Rooney, an inveterate horseplayer who, like Chico Marx and Jimmy Durante, lost a fortune at the track. The book concludes with an analysis of the twin declines of racing and cinema in America in recent decades.

Harmes, Marcus K. The Curse of Frankenstein. Liverpool University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781906733858.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Critics abhorred it, audiences loved it, and Hammer executives were thrilled with the box office returns: The Curse of Frankenstein was big business. The 1957 film is the first to bring together in a horror movie the 'unholy two', Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, together with the Hammer company, and director Terence Fisher, combinations now legendary among horror fans. This book goes back to where the Hammer horror production started, looking at the film from a variety of perspectives: as a loose literary adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel; as a film that had, for legal reasons, to avoid adapting from James Whale's 1931 film for Universal Pictures; and as one which found immediate sources of inspiration in the Gainsborough bodice rippers of the 1940s and the poverty row horrors of the 1950s. Later Hammer horrors may have consolidated the reputation of the company and the stars, but these works had their starting point in the creative and commercial choices made by the team behind The Curse of Frankenstein. In the film sparks fly, new life is created and horrors unleashed, but the film itself was a jolt to 1950s cinemagoing that has never been entirely surpassed.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the development of George Miller's Mad Max (1979). The first iteration of Mad Max did not involve a cops-and-robbers setup; nor the bleak dystopian future setting or car chases. A vital aspect n the construction of the film's dystopian vision was Miller's medical background and years working as a doctor, as well as his exposure to road accidents growing up, which were frequent enough to leave a lasting mark. Another specific influence on the film was the 1973 oil crisis. The pervading mood of Mad Max is Australia decaying, going wrong, heading towards calamity, losing its way fast. The chapter then details the casting of Mel Gibson for the role of Max Rockatansky, as well as the shooting process of Mad Max.

Abstract:
Throughout his voluminous writings, Marx insisted on the notion of capitalism as a turbulent scene of production and exchange, gripped by the forces of competition in an endless process of self-transformation. In these circumstances, every firm faces a stark choice between the continual need to upgrade its process and product configurations or eventually going out of business. The result is what Schumpeter (1942), in an explicit invocation of Marx, called ‘creative destruction’, that is, the periodic abandonment of old equipment, production methods, and product designs in favour of newer and more economically performative assets. At the same time, as both Marx and Schumpeter recognized, creative destruction is inscribed within an ever-expanding sphere of economic activity due to the growth of existing firms, the extension of entrepreneurship, and the appearance of new products on final markets. Capitalism, in brief, is a complex Weld of forces spurring constant qualitative and quantitative readjustments across all its multiple dimensions of operation (cf. Baumol 2002). Sometimes these readjustments are of cataclysmic proportions, as when steam replaced water-power in the nineteenth century; more often than not, as Rosenberg (1982) points out, they take the form of small, incremental steps, many of which may be minuscule, but which collectively produce the incessant instability descried by Marx and Schumpeter. Of late years, there has been a considerable outpouring of literature devoted to these themes, much of it partaking of institutionalist and evolutionary economic theory (e.g. Archibugi et al. 1999; Arthur 1990; David 1985; Edquist 1997; Foray and Lundvall 1996; Freeman 1995; Lundvall and Johnson 1994; Nelson 1993; Von Hippel 1988). An important aspect of this literature is the emphasis that much of it assigns to geography—and above all to the region—as an active force in moulding industrial performance qua new firm formation, learning, invention, and growth (cf. Acs et al. 2002; Antonelli 2003; Audretsch and Feldman 1996; Cooke and Morgan 1998; Feldman 1994; Howells 1999; Maskell and Malmberg 1999; Oinas and Malecki 1999; Simmie 2003; Storper 1995).

Abstract:
Chapter 17 describes how the concept of mutuality extends well beyond that of mutually owned businesses. Mars itself is entirely owned by the Mars family. Many of the companies described in the book are stock corporations with external shareholders. One of the ways in which family firms can retain a focus on the common purpose of the business after the family has withdrawn or sold out to other shareholders is through ‘industrial foundations’ that confer a substantial fraction of the ownership of firms on foundations. These are particularly commonplace in Denmark and Germany, and some of the most successful companies in the world, such as the shipping company Maersk and the media firm Bertelsmann have these ownership forms. The principle of the Economics of Mutuality is about aligning the interests of diverse parties to a common purpose. This can be adopted in companies with any type of ownership but where it takes the form of, for example, mutuals or foundations, then it creates a commitment to the common purpose that may not be observed to the same degree elsewhere.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Alexander Kluge's retrospective evaluation of Soviet avant-garde cinema practices. Kluge recounts Sergei Eisenstein's plan in 1927 to film Capital, “based on the scenario by Karl Marx.” During the following two years, Eisenstein pursues his plan, which no one is willing to finance. Kluge sees Eisenstein's grand plan to film Capital as a kind of imaginary quarry. One can find fragments there, but one may also discover that there is nothing to be found. Dealing in a respectful way with the plans of a great master like Eisenstein is similar to excavating an ancient site; one discovers more about oneself than actual shards and treasures. Kluge suggests that “today we experience the proliferation of existent conditions. Objective reality has outstripped us, but we also have reason to fear the mass of subjectivity that eludes our consciousness.” In 2008, it is dangerous to confront this reality with the method and the expectations of Marx: one becomes discouraged. Kluge then provides a definition of images.

Abstract:
As últimas décadas trouxeram rápidas e bruscas transformações no mundo do trabalho.

Abstract:
A alta celularidade estromal diferencia o tumor do fibroadenoma.

Abstract:

Abstract:
