AbstractKimberlé Crenshaw (1989) arrived at her famous concept “intersectionality” by carefully thinking through speeches and writings by such early Black feminists as Sojourner Truth and Anna J. Cooper. In this paper, I expand on this groundbreaking work in two somewhat surprising ways. First, I bring the ideas of these early Black feminists together with important, related proposals from W.E.B. Du Bois, Karl Marx, Hannah Arendt, and Simone de Beauvoir. Second, I relate these works to central ideas in Kant’s practical philosophy in an effort to develop a Kantian theory of intersectionality. In addition to grasping the distinctive, destructive directions of oppressive forces aimed at women, the poor, and minorities, I seek to understand better the new, violently destructive elements found in European modernity, as evidenced both in European colonialization as well as the Holocaust.

Abstract:
Abstract Explainable Artificial Intelligence (xAI) techniques are nowadays widely accepted as one of the paths towards addressing the interpretability and transparency issues of using black box models. Such techniques may allow to understand, to a certain extent, how or why a model produced a certain output, which may even help identify problems with the model or the data. As in many other domains, the use of xAI techniques in the context of manufacturing is seen as fundamental towards understanding model outputs, supporting informed decision-making, or enabling more human-centric approaches. In this paper, we specifically look at LIME, one of the most widely used approaches to xAI, and at how it needs to be adapted to the manufacturing context. Specifically, we show how the image permutations introduced by LIME might deceive the underlying model and generate poor explanations, and propose a methodology to address this issue. The specific use-case is on defect detection in the textile manufacturing industry.

Abstract:
AbstractDeep Neural Networks (DNNs) are being deployed in a wide range of settings today, from safety-critical applications like autonomous driving to commercial applications involving image classifications. However, recent research has shown that DNNs can be brittle to even slight variations of the input data. Therefore, rigorous testing of DNNs has gained widespread attention. While DNN robustness under norm-bound perturbation got significant attention over the past few years, our knowledge is still limited when natural variants of the input images come. These natural variants, e.g., a rotated or a rainy version of the original input, are especially concerning as they can occur naturally in the field without any active adversary and may lead to undesirable consequences. Thus, it is important to identify the inputs whose small variations may lead to erroneous DNN behaviors. The very few studies that looked at DNN’s robustness under natural variants, however, focus on estimating the overall robustness of DNNs across all the test data rather than localizing such error-producing points. This work aims to bridge this gap.To this end, we study the local per-input robustness properties of the DNNs and leverage those properties to build a white-box (DeepRobust-W) and a black-box (DeepRobust-B) tool to automatically identify the non-robust points. Our evaluation of these methods on three DNN models spanning three widely used image classification datasets shows that they are effective in flagging points of poor robustness. In particular, DeepRobust-W and DeepRobust-B are able to achieve an F1 score of up to 91.4% and 99.1%, respectively. We further show that DeepRobust-W can be applied to a regression problem in a domain beyond image classification. Our evaluation on three self-driving car models demonstrates that DeepRobust-W is effective in identifying points of poor robustness with F1 score up to 78.9%.

Abstract:
Modern technologies have improved their application in field of agriculture in order to improve production. Plant diseases are harmful to plant growth, which leads to reduced quality and quantity of crop. Early identification of plant disease will reduce the loss of the crop productivity. So, it is necessary to identify and diagnose the disease at an early stage before it spreads to the entire field. In this chapter, the proposed model uses VGG16 with attention mechanism for leaf disease classification. This model makes use of convolution neural network which consist of convolution block, max pool layer, and fully connected layer with softmax as an activation function. The proposed approach integrates CNN with attention mechanism to focus more on the diseased part of leaf and increase the classification accuracy. The proposed model design is a novel deep learning model to perform the fine tuning in the classification of nine different type of tomato plant disease.

Abstract This chapter discusses the social, cultural, and political factors that influence Black people’s higher rates of sleeplessness such as poor housing, environmental racism, racism-related vigilance, and cultural views of bedtimes. Sleep is vital to our biological, physical, mental, and emotional health, however, there are racial disparities in quality and quantity of sleep between the different races. Specifically, in America, Black people (especially Black men) sleep less and have lesser quality of sleep than White people. Racial disparities in sleep are concerning because when sleeplessness falls along racial lines, the rejuvenating benefits of sleep also fall along racial lines. This also means poor health outcomes that map onto lesser quality of sleep like heart disease will also fall along racial lines.

This chapter conducts a visual content analysis of Black women candidates’ headshots to examine whether there is a “phenotypic archetype” of Black women candidates to which Black women are exposed. Findings from an original dataset on the appearances of Black women candidates who sought office in 2018 align with prior research on colorism and representation. The chapter presents data that shows that the pool of Black women candidates skews lighter-skinned with straightened hair, and that candidates who wear braids or locs may disproportionately lose their contests. These findings suggest that Black women who seek local-level offices with natural styles like locs may find it difficult to enter political office and to rise to higher levels of office. The exploratory findings presented in the chapter illustrate a patterned preference for a certain type of Black women candidate, but it is noted that more research should be done on a larger scale to assess this trend.

Given that the animals were healthy, the median value may be optimal for the gene pool of the black-and-white breed of cows in the West Siberian region.

Abstract:
Hydrogen combustion may represent a threat to containment integrity in a VVER-440/213 plant owing to the combination of high pressure and high temperature. A study has been carried out using the GASFLOW 2.1 three-dimensional CFD code to evaluate the hydrogen distribution in the containment during a beyond design basis accident. The VVER-440/213 containment input model consists of two 3D blocks connected via one-dimensional (1D) ducts. One 3D block contains the reactor building and the accident localization tower with the suppression pools. Another 3D block models the air traps. 1D ducts repres

Generalized planning is concerned with the characterization and computation of plans that solve many instances at once. In the standard formulation, a generalized plan is a mapping from fea- ture or observation histories into actions, assuming that the instances share a common pool of features and actions. This assumption, however, excludes the standard relational planning domains where actions and objects change across instances. In this work, we extend the standard formulation of generalized planning to such domains. This is achieved by projecting the actions over the features, resulting in

Silk may possess superior mechanical strength while its resilience is very poor. In contrast, elastin in human arteries is very soft but extremely durable with an estimated half-life of 70 years. By combing polypeptide sequences derived from native silk and elastin, we have produced a series of silk-elastin-like proteins (SELPs), which have displayed a set of outstanding properties such as good biocompatibility and controllable biodegradation rates [1]. In this study, we will examine the crystallization of the silk-like blocks and the crosslinking of the elastin-like blocks, as well as their i

This research report describes a methodology whereby multi-spectral and hyperspectral imagery from remote sensing, is used for deriving predicted field maps of selected plant growth attributes which are required for precision cropping. A major task in precision cropping is to establish areas of the field that differ from the rest of the field and share a common characteristic. Yield distribution f maps can be prepared by yield monitors, which are available for some harvester types. Other field attributes of interest in precision cropping, e.g. soil properties, leaf Nitrate, biomass etc. are ob

The second Important Shark and Ray Areas (ISRA) regional expert workshop was held in hybrid mode (in person and online) in Thessaloniki, Greece from 8–12 May, 2023. The goal was to identify and delineate three-dimensional and discrete portions of habitat that are critical to the survival of sharks, rays, and chimaeras (hereafter ‘sharks’), and that have the potential to be managed for conservation. The region covered included the Mediterranean and Black Seas. This scientific collaboration amongst regional and global experts resulted in the identification of 65 Important Shark and Ray Areas, 6

We collected ∼1300 km of ground-penetrating radar profiles over McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica, using frequencies between 40 and 400 MHz to determine extent, continuity and depth to the brine. We also used profiles to determine meteoric ice thickness and locate englacial features, which may suggest ice shelf instability. The brine extends 9–13 km inland from the ice shelf terminus and covers the entire region between Ross, White and Black Islands. Jump unconformities and basal fractures exist in the brine and ice shelf, respectively, suggesting prior fracturing and re-suturing. One 100 MHz prof

The models used at present to evaluate the potential hazard areas around large LNG fires were developed with field test data from smaller diameter (1.8 m to 15 m) fires. These models are, however, applied to predict hazard distances from fires much larger in size compared to the experimental fires. Recent publication of the results from a series of tests conducted in 1987 with 35 m diameter LNG fires indicates that large LNG fires tend to generate significant amount of black soot. The black soot is postulated to be generated from incomplete and inefficient combustion of fuel vapors due to redu

While it’s typical to associate right-wing populism in Western Europe with the narrative of Islam versus the Judeo-Christian West, there’s a nuanced and emerging form of civilisationalism that we term "anti-Western civilizational populism." This paper argues that anti-Western civilizational populism is present in the discourse of not only Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan but also Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and may be emerging in Israel under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
