Guvenc, Deniz Ali Woloshin. "Max Stirner: Ontology, Ethics, Politics." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/38841.

Abstract:
Max Stirner has historically been charged with nihilism, narcissism, and nominalism. Yet there exists another Stirner—a Stirner attentive and responsive to the intricate uncertainty of existence. I argue that we can find in his destructive an-archism a spirited celebration of creativity and experimentation; in his wild anti-humanism, a gentle sympathy for the human life; in his aggressive atheism, an unwavering clemency for the heathen. Stirner’s vagabond ontology, egoist ethics, and insurrectionary politics culminate in a singular, joyful affirmation: there are other ways of being.

Abstract:
The present thesis does not, following the cautionary example of Dupuis and Cotonet, seek to define romanticism. The fatuity of their lexigraphical project, in light of Friedrich Schlegel’s expansive ‘theory’ of ‘romantic poetry’, soon becomes clear. Schlegel’s ‘theory’ aspired to elude categorisation and exceed definitive bounds. Dupuis and Cotonet had set out, to their foolish credit, to define the indefinable. However, it is possible to identify a characteristic motif of romanticism from Schlegel’s ‘inceptive’ theory. The critic extended his vision, somewhat fastidiously, to nature itself.

Most of the literature dealing with Max Stirner's The Ego and Its Own has concentrated on the weaknesses inherent in his defence of egoism, and the dominance of this critique has tended to obscure the more positive aspects of his conception of selfhood. In this thesis I argue that, while Stirner's understanding of self-interest and selfhood is indeed seriously defective, his interpretation of the liberated human agent should be recognised as a significant contribution to the individualist cause. In this thesis I argue that following Hegel's commitment to both political philosophy and political theory, Max Stirner, Karl Marx and Friedrich Nietzsche take flight from doing political theory in the 'Western' tradition. I demonstrate that Stirner, Marx and Nietzsche all use their own respective notions of political philosophy to criticise the very idea of doing political theory per . re. The evidence for this is to be found in both their refusal to do political theory and in their notions of prophetic agency.

Embo

As the last of the Young Hegelians, Max Stirner can be seen as continuing their general assault upon the prevailing social institutions and intellectual traditions of the German Vormarz. Yet the philosophy represented by Stirner distinguishes itself by carrying through Hegel's philosophical system to a conclusion which is antithetical to Hegelianism itself. Stirner extolls the inherently unique and particular human being, which finds itself eclipsed in the thought of Hegel.
