Abstract:
The scientific investigation of Karla Grosch's life and work is highly relevant both in the context of Bauhaus and Klee research and with regard to an early 20th century cultural historiography. However, the current state of research on Grosch's person is not satisfactory and has to be examined critically due to a lack of proximity to the sources. The results presented in this article are largely based on the evaluation of unpublished archive and estate materials, which were identified and transcribed in the course of in-depth research. The exchanges of letters between Karla Grosch and Max Werner Lenz as well as Lily and Felix Klee were particularly informative and allowed a focus to be placed on interpersonal relations. This is the first time that a comprehensive picture of the young dancer, gymnastics teacher and »adopted daughter« of Lily and Paul Klee is conveyed, which ultimately fits seamlessly into her highly regarded environment.

Abstract:
The documentary film Grizzly Man (2005), directed by Werner Herzog, is of special interest among ecocritics and environmental advocates because it deals directly with the topic of wildlife depiction, conservationism and, above all the interspecies relationship between grizzlies and man. This article investigates five problematic elements of Grizzly Man as an ecological film: the wildlife documentary as a genre, the highly controversial figure of Timothy Treadwell who produced the original footage, the grizzlies in the background, the voice and hand of the director Herzog in this film, and the film’s ending. The analysis of these five areas may deepen the audiences’ understanding of both the film and the ecocritical approach to literature. Apart from highlighting certain contradictions in the film’s ecological message and its representation of wild animal, the article tries, in its conclusion, to examine the film’s potential to generate environmentally positive responses and create a better understanding of both wildlife and the key human figure in this film.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Characters of animals have been present in the literature since its emergence up to present times. However, at the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XXI century they gained growing interest of literary critics, philosophers, historians, anthropologists, biologists and ecologists that gives scope for studying characters of animals as an interdisciplinary phenomenon. The purpose of the present paper is to study the position of animals in human culture, society, and the relationship between people and animals. It is worth noting that the contemporary authors tend to abandon the dominant position of a person and reveal one of the modern issues, namely, the vulnerability of all creatures before the cruelty of the world. One of such novels is “Tomorrow the Cats” written by the famous French writer, Bernard Werber. The main idea of the novel is to depict a person through lens of an animal. In his novel, Bernard Werber shows the world through cats’ eyes and predicts the proper evolution of humanity. A new perspective of human-animal interaction is the leveling differences between them. In the novel animals can understand language, read, perceive information, predict, behave like a person having a purpose to make friends with people. Bernard Werber points to the rights and protection of animals of humiliations they have been experiencing throughout human history. Contemporary human being has to understand: neither man should rule over nature, nor nature should rule over man. The writer’s vision of the future relationship between species and the conditional symbiosis of animals for their salvation is examined in the article. Besides, new transformations of human-animal relations are studied in the paper and the reasons for mentioned changes are outlined. After all, against the background of the war, the author depicts the contemporary problem of human interaction with the outside world, in which the threat to all creatures is not only looting, but also a plague of rats seeking domination in the city. For the common salvation of animals they are joining to humans. So the author interprets in such a way the image of animal as species closed to man. Thus, Bernard Werber represents changes in human perception of the animal, characterized by man’s desire to worry about the lives of other species. The author seeks to warn a man describing a number of situations in which a man is cruel to the world around him and to his own species. The writer seeks to warn people of the terrible consequences of their actions in order to protect them. Bernard Werber says that the mission of people on the earth is changing, they should worry not only about their existence, but also about existence of the world around them.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Chebli, S. (2023). Laut.

Abstract:
klicksafe (Hrsg.) (2015). Cyber-Mobbing Erste-Hilfe App.

Abstract:
Abstract:
The Vietnam War was over and America seemed in the midst of a nationwide party. The self-proclaimed Me generation was flocking to discotheques, recreational drug use was high, and sexual taboos were being shattered nationwide. Then The Village People appeared on the music scene. Never before had gay sexuality been as up-front and in the face of America. The Village People struck a cultural nerve and fueled a craze that had them playing to sold-out crowds at Madison Square Garden. Even today, few adults could not at least hum the tunes toY.M.C.A.andMacho Man. Because of the unique role they played in the United States of the late 1970s, The Village People are able to provide a powerful lens through which to view the emergence and development of gay culture in America. InMacho Man, readers can travel back with one of the first gay icons in popular music, and a top pop culture biographer, as they describe this complicated process of change. In these pages, Randy Jones, the original cowboy in the band, takes us inside the time period, the discos, and the new musical style that was in many ways unprecedented in giving a voice to a previously closeted gay culture. Assisted by Mark Bego, one of the most popular and prolific pop culture authors working today, Jones shows how the fast-lane rise, fall, and rebirth of this novel band paralleled activities across the last 40 years within the gay culture and gay rights movement. The work concludes with a gayography — a listing of openly gay musicians and performers in the United States before and since The Village People - along with a discography and filmography. This work will interest pop culture and music enthusiasts, in addition to scholars in gay studies.

Abstract:
As Ovid’s heroine Briseis acknowledges, letters carry material traces of the emotions that motivated the writer. This is true of any handwritten document, but more so for letters that stand in for face-to-face conversation with familiars. Emotion may be suggested by a tremor in an upright line, an ink blot, a torn page, or a hurried scrawl. Nevertheless, it is difficult to pin these signs to a manifest emotion with certainty. And yet we should not disregard these traces altogether; they were part of an epistolary vocabulary familiar to early modern writers and readers. This chapter elucidates affective traces by reading letters written by early modern women through the literary lens of Ovid’s Heroides, a key text in humanist pedagogy with broad influence across literary and non-literary writing.

Abstract:
In the final decades of the Manchu Qing dynasty in China, technologies such as the phonograph, telephone, telegraph, and photography were both new and foreign. In The Stone and the Wireless Shaoling Ma analyzes diplomatic diaries, early science fiction, feminist poetry, photography, telegrams, and other archival texts, and shows how writers, intellectuals, reformers, and revolutionaries theorized what media does despite lacking a vocabulary to do so. Media defines the dynamics between technologies and their social or cultural forms, between devices or communicative processes and their representations in texts and images. More than simply reexamining late Qing China's political upheavals and modernizing energies through the lens of media, Ma shows that a new culture of mediation was helping to shape the very distinctions between politics, gender dynamics, economics, and science and technology. Ma contends that mediation lies not only at the heart of Chinese media history but of media history writ large.

Abstract:
Ex Machina (2014) impressed critics and audiences alike with its bold ideas and all-too-realistic depiction of the unexpected consequences of constructing a sentient being. In his feature directorial debut, Alex Garland uses efficient storytelling, a compelling narrative, and heady concepts to create a modern science fiction masterpiece that explores gender, scientific advancement, and the very concept of humanity, all in a compelling, suspenseful film. Artificial intelligence has long been a sci-fi staple, but here, Garland posits what would happen if, for once, humans, rather than AI, were the real villains. In exploring Ex Machina's ideas about consciousness, embodiment, and masculinity, all through the lens of a misogynist mad scientist, Joshua Grimm argues the result is a fascinating, truly unique film that immediately established Garland as a breakout voice in the landscape of science fiction film.

Abstract:
From Betty Boop to Donald Duck, Tex Avery to Walt Disney, collage animation to Japanese anime, and Claymation to 3D animation, Surrealism and Animation is the first book to identify correspondences between the art of animation and the International Surrealist Movement. Sharing a deep commitment to a reanimation of everyday life, surrealist artists and animators sought a marvellous, living form of art. Cartoons and trick films by pioneers such as Georges Méliès were influential for Salvador Dalí and André Breton, among others; many other surrealists and their associates such as Max Ernst, Joseph Cornell, Hans Richter, Len Lye, Roland Topor, Jan Švankmajer, and Lawrence Jordan turned to animated cinema and theories of animacy to express their surrealist visions. Surrealism and Animation is the first book devoted to surrealism’s vivid engagement with the history, theory, and medium of animation on a transnational basis. Featuring seventeen essays by leading and emerging scholars, as well as interviews with contemporary artists Penny Slinger and Jacolby Satterwhite, this collection investigates a shimmering range of topics on animated surrealism, including black humour, queer subjectivities, ecofeminism, Black surrealisms, and more.

Abstract:
Recently, legal scholars have brought renewed attention to the question of what modern law may have to learn from Aristotle specifically, and from virtue ethics generally. This new virtue jurisprudence movement is situated in the debate over normative legal theory, yet it has taken on a decidedly practical question: What would happen if virtue ethics were transplanted into normative legal theory? This chapter offers a taxonomy of the new literature along two different axes. The first axis identifies three different impacts of analyzing law through the lens of virtue jurisprudence). The second axis demonstrates two different ways of applying virtue jurisprudence. These include a substantive application (proposing law reforms to include more “virtuous” standards), and a procedural, or process-based, application (examining how law affects an individual’s own efforts to realize a good life, where the individual is responsible for her own habits, behaviors, and choices to that end).

Abstract:
This article shows how the material culture can sometimes be an even clearer lens through which scholars may view the Hittite imperial organization and modes of engagement. The evidence for the selective adoption of north-central Anatolian ceramic traditions in neighboring regions, changes and continuity in local settlement systems, the direction and intensity of Hittite administrative efforts, and the dialogue of territorial hegemony carried out via landscape monuments suggest that empire, rather than a monolithic entity, is best conceptualized as a complex web of interactions. Imperial–local relationships were less clear cut and in favor of all-encompassing central control than one might infer from the Hittite documents. Instead, we gain the impression of an ongoing process or negotiation of empire that is carried out on a range of different cultural, political, and social levels, and which is neither complete nor uncontested in its closest periphery and throughout its existence.

Abstract:
This chapter presents former ambassador Charles Stith's reflections on the impact of African Americans on U.S. foreign policy during particular historical periods. He identifies four eras of impact that reflect an African American imprint on U.S. foreign policy. Those are the slavery era, the Reconstruction era, the civil rights era, and the post-civil rights era. Each era is noteworthy for its changes in status and power of African Americans and thus has implications relative to the question of impact. Each era also had its distinct foreign policy issues and challenges. Among his observations are that the foreign policy concerns of African Americans were both major and mainstream from era to era, whether the issue was the slave trade or the war against terrorism; that the unique contribution of African Americans to the foreign policy mix is to see America's geopolitical interests through the lens of human rights; and that the breadth of foreign policy interests by African Americans has reflected their position and power within the American body politic.

Abstract:
Pausanias gives us the clearest glimpse of Greek myth as a living, local tradition. He shows us how the physical world existed in myriad complex and shifting relationships with the world of storytelling, and what was at stake in claims to possess the past. He demonstrates how myths guided curious travellers to particular places, the kinds of responses they provoked, and the ways they could be tested or disputed. The Periegesis attests to a form of cultural tourism we would still recognize: it is animated by the desire to see for oneself distant places previously only read about. It shows us how travellers might map the literary landscapes that they imagined on to the reality, and how locals might ‘package’ their cities to meet the demands of travellers’ expectations. This book uses Pausanias’s text as a lens on the spatial dynamics of myth. It reveals the significance of local stories in an Empire connected by a shared literary paideia, and the unifying power of a tradition made up paradoxically of narratives that took diverse, conflicting forms on the ground. And it shows how storytelling and the physical infrastructures of the Greek mainland were intricately interwoven such that the decline or flourishing of the latter affected the archive of myth that Pausanias transmits.

AbstractThis paper examines the practices of translation in the 1551 Atlas of ‘Alī al-Sharafī of Sfax (d. after 1579). Drawing on conceptual frameworks from translation studies, linguistics, and other disciplines of textual and historical analysis, we argue that the iconographic and textual elements of the atlas –such as calendrical tables, qibla charts, knot patterns in frames, and depictions of flags and banners in sectional charts– reflect a quest for ways to culturally adapt map-making practices that were shared across the Mediterranean realm. As such, the product in question cannot be fully understood through the lens of traditional dichotomies such as Islamic vs. Christian or European vs. Middle Eastern or North African, as its cultural references and semiotic repertoire extend beyond subregional and confessional demarcations.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter, we describe four Norwegian upper secondary schools’ paths towards a whole school approach (WSA) to sustainability. Since 2017, these schools have been part of a longitudinal university–school partnership, together with a school owner and a teacher education. The aim of the partnership was to develop the learning institutions’ sustainability education. The data have been analysed through the lens of the ‘WSA flower model’ (Wals & Mathie, 2022). As a result, we found that the four schools took different paths towards a WSA (e.g. they were initiated by enthusiastic teachers or the leader group). Nonetheless, what the schools had in common was that more petals in the WSA flower model were activated as the partnership evolved. Furthermore, the activation of more petals was related to more focus on robust sustainability in the schools. Thus, we conclude that schools may follow different paths towards sustainability, yet the crucial factor seems to be that more than one petal in the WSA flower model needs to be activated to sustain a school’s journey towards a WSA. We also acknowledge the important role the overarching partnership played as a catalyst for both activating the petals and keeping them active.

AbstractThe pressure is high on career educators to develop information literacies as a life skill for themselves as well as for youth, particularly those from disadvantaged communities, and to document and process career information in a rapidly changing world of work that is relevant to their sociocultural and environmental contexts. We employ a critical or transformative approach to information literacies to explore young people’s socially situated practices of collecting, validating, and processing career information as well as how they might “democratically transform structures of authority over information exchanges, and then maintain scrutiny over this authority” (Whitworth A, Radical information literacy: reclaiming the political heart of the IL movement. Elsevier, 2014, p. 2). We draw from qualitative interviews with ten boys studying in 10th grade at a government school in Delhi, India, and videos produced by them to map their career information landscapes. Using an education for sustainable development lens, “bumps” were made visible in their information landscapes, that is, the tensions that emerge between multiple informational actors for reimagining sustainable futures. We suggest that these tensions can serve as cultural resources that students can democratically engage with in developing crucial career and life skills for their futures.

Abstract:
AbstractLeopold Blaustein (1905–1942 [or 1944]) was a Polish-Jewish philosopher, aesthetician, psychologist, schoolteacher, and educationalist whose thought was shaped on the border between the main intellectual trends in Poland and Europe in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Like a lens, his eclectic but original philosophy focused on new readings in the legacy of descriptive psychology, phenomenology, and Gestalt psychology. Certainly, he was well trained in these divergent yet intertwined traditions. After all, Blaustein was educated in Lvov (Lwów, now Lviv in Ukraine), where his teachers were, among others, Kazimierz Twardowski—a disciple of Franz Brentano in Vienna—who supervised his doctoral dissertation, and Roman Ingarden, who was working at that time on the basics of his phenomenological aesthetics, presented later in 1931 in Das literarische Kunstwerk [The Literary Work of Art]. Importantly, while working on his thesis in 1925, Blaustein studied for a few weeks in Freiburg im Breisgau under Edmund Husserl, who was lecturing then on phenomenological psychology. In addition, in 1927/28, he spent a few months in Berlin, where he had occasion to attend lectures given by Carl Stumpf or Max Wertheimer, not to mention his visits to the Berlin Psychological Institute. After his return to Poland in 1928, Blaustein published his first monograph in Polish, Husserlowska nauka o akcie, treści i przedmiocie przedstawienia [Husserl’s Theory of Act, Content and Object of Presentation], which was devoted solely to Husserl’s philosophy. This book is arguably the very first scholarly work which reads Husserl’s idea of intentionality in the context of Brentano and Bernard Bolzano. Later, Blaustein worked out an original methodological device which allowed him to study phenomena such as experiencing a theater play, a movie, or a radio drama. He also explored new ideas in humanistic psychology and the latest attempts to implement phenomenological tools in psychiatry. With this in mind, it should come as no surprise which scholars often emphasize the novelty of Blaustein’s approach.

Abstract:
The Covid-19 measures put in place by governments around the world to restrict the movement of people and limit the spread of the virus also impacted on children’s play. The importance of play in children’s lives has been well documented and research shows it plays a role in all aspects of development, including physical, cognitive and socio-emotional development. This chapter reports some key findings on changes in young children’s play in an Irish context based on parental responses to an online survey, gathered during the first Covid-19 lockdown in Spring 2020. Over five hundred parents of children aged one to ten years responded to the survey during May and June 2020, approximately two months into the first lockdown in Ireland, when all schools, preschools, playgrounds and non-essential businesses were closed. The findings of the survey shed light on the types and amounts of play that young Irish children engaged in during this time. Young children in Ireland spent a considerable amount of time in multiple types of play, in rich home play environments with parents who valued and facilitated their play, both in terms of the physical resources they provided and the social support they engaged in while playing with their child. The findings also highlight the inclusion of the virus and restrictions in all types of children’s play, with approximately one-third of the children bringing pandemic-related information into their play (e.g. corona chasing, LEGO ventilators). Interpreting these results and other international research through a bio-ecological lens offers a good approach to make sense of, and learn from, these findings.

Madness is insanity, imprudence, delusion, foolishness, crazy or stupid, dangerous behaviour. Madness is a sociological phenomenon that affects not only oneself and one's immediate environment but also society. Popular cinema has largely portrayed madness as violent, dangerous, dysfunctional and, at worst, insane. In all these films, directors and cinematographers have different cinematographic approaches to mad characters and madness. In this study, the contributions of cinematography in Mad Max films to the film's narrative structure are analyzed. The lens angle, focus and depth of field, camera angle, camera movement, shooting scale, composition, lighting, and exposure in the four Mad Max movies were analyzed in terms of how they play a role in the reception of the madness that the director tries to convey to the audience in all films.

Abstract:
Abstract Observation of the lives of many young people shows that they may move between transitory and inconsistent states, which leads to understanding and conceptualizing the 20s as a period of instability and extended exploration. Taking a qualitative approach, conducting in-depth interviews, and following emerging adults for 12 years yielded different understandings. Reading career stories of emerging adults showed that the majority struggle to find their way in this changing world. A substantial number of young people did find their direction, achieved their goals despite difficulties and setbacks, and found their direction over the years. Even those who had difficulties pursuing and achieving their dream were still struggling to hold the jobs they did not necessarily like and to lead their lives. Only a small percentage lost their way. The majority were active and employed a variety of ways to navigate their lives.

Abstract This chapter focuses on a Washington Supreme Court decision concerning the self-defense rights of a woman named Yvonne Wanrow. The chapter brings a critical lens to analyze feminist arguments for arming women to deal with aggressive violence and how State v. Wanrow sheds light on those arguments. It argues that the Wanrow case demonstrates the problems with conventional legal instructions about self-defense “when issues of gender, race and class were factored in.” The Washington Supreme Court ultimately reversed Wanrow’s conviction because of flawed jury instructions that embedded gender stereotypes into the legality of self-defense. It is no coincidence, the chapter argues, that the case unfolded at the same time that radical feminists were arguing that women had the right and sometimes the need to resort to lethal self-defense.

Abstract:
Is it possible to reclaim certain works as part of the feminist film canon, even if they were never intended as such? If Elaine May ever self-identified as a feminist, her public stance on the topic was one of comical obfuscation. This chapter reclaims May’s second film The Heartbreak Kid from the second-wave feminist critiques that dismissed it as sexist. It reads the film through a contemporary feminist lens, specifically looking at May’s framing of key scenes within the film as a representation of the ‘female gaze’. It looks closely at the contentious character of Lila (played by May’s daughter, Jeannie Berlin), who has been dismissed as many critics as a caricatured representation of Jewish womanhood, as key in May’s critique of both the character of Lenny and the filmic canon of her male contemporaries. May looks beneath the caricature represented by Lenny’s resentful and self-loathing gaze, and finds the humanity within Lila.

Abstract The lives of emerging adults seem to be characterized by lack of commitment to a current job or relationship and lack of long-term articulated goals. It has been theorized that nowadays young people continue to explore their identity, and until this process is complete, they are self-focused and unstable. Although this theory is widely accepted, there is no indication of whether the long-term outcomes are more beneficial to those who were involved in identity exploration for many years. Based on earlier follow-up studies of emerging adults, the author learned that there is not one linear route to adulthood. Individuals may take different routes, and these routes might differ in the clarity of the goals that guide the pursuit, the pace taken, and the changes made along the road. These insights led to the inception of a 12-year study to better understand how young people navigate to adulthood.

Full text
Abstract:
Surface relief diffractive lenses that utilize multiple diffracted orders were first introduced by Sweeney and Sommargren1 and Morris and Faklis2. More comprehensive discussions of these lenses were later presented3,4,5. These multi-order diffractive (MOD) lenses were shown to have the same optical power at a discrete set of resonance wavelengths within a chosen spectral region. The physical difference between a standard diffractive lens and a MOD lens is that the OPD at the zone boundaries of a standard diffractive lens is equal to the design wavelength, whereas, for a MOD lens the OPD is equal to an integer (>1) multiple of the design wavelength. As a result, the diffraction efficiency for each order of a MOD lens has a reduced spectral bandwidth. This efficiency reduction indicates that MOD lenses may be best suited for optical systems which utilize discrete wavelength sources as opposed to broadband sources. This paper will investigate the use of MOD lenses in this class of systems by examining the combination of refractive and diffractive lens power to achieve proper achromatic control in a manner analogous to the standard hybrid lens approach. These hybrid lens combinations may be well suited for applications such as color laser printing and laser machining. Several first order design examples are provided including a two-color hybrid achromat with nearly 100% diffraction efficiency and a three-color hybrid apochromat made from a single material.

Abstract:
Abstract The Mississippi Canyon 280-A platform, also known as Lena Guyed Tower located in 1,000 ft water depth in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), was successfully decommissioned and reefed in-place in 2020. To meet the regulatory requirements on offshore platform decommissioning, i.e. BSEE decommissioning requirements and the LDWF artificial reef program, an environmental study and an engineering study were performed to ensure that the platform decommissioning satisfies these critical requirements on environmental protection and operational safety. The environmental study revealed the abundance of marine lives residing on the tower and rare coral species only observed in deepwater region. This justified the environmental benefit of turning the tower into an on-site artificial reef and functioning as a vibrant marine life habitat at the end of its production service life. The engineering study on Lena decommissioning, as addressed in this paper, involved three (3) stages of engineering work: tower decommissioning concepts and feasibility study; selected concept definition; and detailed tower reef-in-place laydown (toppling) plan and design. High-level tower reef-in-place criteria were set up in the early engineering stage as guidelines to the detailed laydown design, including specific project requirements on minimal environmental impact and safe offshore field operations. This engineering study relied heavily on multiple expert brainstorm sessions on various decommissioning concepts and options, and advanced structural modeling and computer simulations for assessment and design. A large number of tower structural models were developed to verify the plan and check various factors and risk scenarios that may affect the tower performance in different stages of the decommissioning operation. Advanced analytical techniques were developed and applied, which feature the driving mechanisms of the problem such as soil-structure-interaction, guyline tension, structural member contact and sliding, large displacement simulation, structural collapse, and hydrodynamics. Stringent quality assurance and testing procedures were followed to ensure the credibility of developed analytical techniques and engineering technologies. The most challenging part that differentiates the decommissioning engineering from typical structural design is how to properly estimate the platform in-situ "as-is" condition and carry out the assessment as such to make a regulatory compliant, feasible, reliable, and efficient plan. Therefore, engineering judgment had to go beyond the scope covered by existing industry codes and standards, and rely on the most recent advances in industry research and technology. This engineering study resulted in a clearly defined tower decommissioning plan and procedure, backed up with contingency plans for various risk scenarios and potential deviations in field operation due to limitations and/or uncertainties. The decommissioning plan minimized the offshore field construction scope and risk, and kept the required tower laydown pull loads within the capacity range of typical GoM offshore tugboats. As a result, the Lena tower was successfully laid down on seafloor in an anticipated reefing position, with no major deviations from the plan. Lena Guyed Tower is the first deepwater compliant structure decommissioned. This decommissioning effort may provide the most valuable information and lessons learned to the industry for similar decommissioning and abandonment operations in the future.

Abstract:
Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) was used to image austenitic stainless steel (SS) samples (Type 304L) fabricated by the laser engineered net shaping (LENS®) process. The samples were hydrogen charged (H-charged) and subsequently cut and polished. The surface contact potential difference (CPD) of the samples was measured using the KPFM technique, a form of atomic force microscopy. A set of uncharged samples was also studied for reference and changes in the CPD were on the noise level. For H-charged samples fabricated by the LENS® process, the resulting surface potential images show a change in CPD of about 10 – 20mV around cell-like boundaries (5–10 μm in size) and grain boundaries (50–100 μm in size). The significant change in the CPD is affected by variation of the local work function, which indicates the presence of hydrogen. The elemental composition of the LENS® samples was studied using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) which showed an increase in the atomic percentage of Cr and a decrease in Ni around the cell-like boundaries. The existence of intercellular ferrite on the sub-grain boundaries may explain the propensity of hydrogen to segregate around these regions. The finer grain structure of LENS® samples compared to that of forged or welded samples suggests that the hydrogen can be dispersed differently throughout this material than in traditionally forged austenitic SS. This study is conducted to elucidate the behavior of hydrogen with respect to the microstructure of additively manufactured stainless steel alloys.

Abstract:
The relay lens for the Johns Hopkins University ultraviolet telescope (HUT) will be used primarily for guidance when the HUT system flies on the Space Shuttle in 1986. It relays the focal plane image of the 1800-mm focal length, f/2 parabolic primary mirror to a vidicon at 2× magnification. The vidicon will display a star image on a TV monitor which will enable an operator to maintain Shuttle orientation. It may also be used to obtain pictures of celestial bodies including possibly, the only pictures of Halley’s Comet. The design problems associated with this six-element plus filters were very severe. For example, it relays the highly comatic, 400-μm spot in the parabola focal plane to a 25-μm spot at the vidicon. The spectral range extends from 0.4861 to 0.6500 μm. The FOV of the primary mirror is 1.5 min but the relay lens must see an input FOV equal to 30 times this quantity because of its 60-mm object distance. This presentation briefly describes the HUT system followed by a detailed exposition of the design problems and ultimate performance of the relay lens parabola combination.

In the quest for a solution to presbyopia and due to the inability to restore the eye's system itself, man in the last centuries resorted to a continuous evolution of increasingly sophisticated types of eyeglasses (Fowler and Patreas, 1991). What technology has had to offer so far, as practical products, were glasses that utilize rigid lenses. The most advanced solution on the market today is spectacles with progressive addition lenses (PAL) that provide a different, yet fixed power, in each direction of gaze. This is still a compromise with the real need of a dynamically varying power. While in some frequently occurring situations, such a grading approximates real needs, in many other situations the compromise forces uneasy head tilting and partially impaired vision.

Abstract:
A lens system was designed and incorporated into a prototype Rodenstock scanninglaser ophthalmoscope, which provided additional magnification of retinal structures and further narrowing of optical sections. The lens system increased the effective numerical aperture of the eye. In addition, smaller pinholes were used for the confocal aperture. The optical-section thickness was measured by using an artificial eye and positioning an artificial retina near the plane of focus under micrometer control. The digitized images were averaged over a central area of 16 × 16 pixels, and intensity was measured as a function of "retinal" position. The results showed that sections with half-widths < 70μm could be achieved. An infrared diodelaser was used to image the living human retina with this system. The maximum retinal irradiance was calculated to be within the standards of the American National Standards Institute. High-magnification images of the retina were acquired at different section depths. These results suggest that it is possible to image the microscopic structure of the living human retina. This may be useful in characterizing and studying microanatomical and functional alterations (measured by high-resolution SLO perimetry) in the human retina.

Abstract:
Existing research on sexual satisfaction in fat individuals is often framed through a fatphobic lens, even sometimes misrepresenting findings. We present data from two studies conducted through an intersectional fat liberatory lens. Study 1: In a quantitative online study, 596 higher-weight adult participants (21–65 years; Small-fat: 51.5%, Mid-fat: 43.1%, Super-fat: 4.7%; Woman: 36%, Man: 34%, Non-binary: 22.3%; 38.6% trans) who had had intimate relationships in the previous 6 months, were recruited via Prolific. Participants completed measures of experienced weight stigma (EWS), embodiment, self-compassion, sexual satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, demographics and mental health. As hypothesised, EWS was associated with reduced sexual satisfaction controlling for depression and relationship satisfaction, and this relationship was mediated by reduced embodiment. Contrary to hypotheses, however, self-compassion did not moderate the relationship. No major differences were observed by gender identity. Study 2: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 of the participants from Study 1, balanced for gender identity and high/low embodiment. Using thematic analysis, generated themes included discomfort during sex, hyper-fixation on body parts, coping strategies, hierarchy of attractiveness within fat community and weight in relationships. Findings highlight that fatphobia influences sexual outcomes by reducing embodiment and suggests a possible target for future clinical interventions.

Abstract:
A computer code for analyzing nano-particle motions in an aerodynamic particle beam focusing system was developed. The effectiveness of the focusing system consisting of several lenses, nozzle and downstream tube of the nozzle was analyzed. The code included an accurate 3-dimensional model for the Brownian diffusion of nano-particles in sharply varying pressure field in the aerodynamic lens system. Lagrangian particle Trajectory analysis was performed assuming a one-way coupling model. The particle equation of motion used included drag and Brownian forces. Trajectories of different size nano-particles in an aerodynamic lens were analyzed, and the particle beam focusing process was studied. The numerical results of 3-D model for particle beam diameter, penetration efficiency and beam divergence angle were compared with axisymmetric model and discussed. The importance of the accuracy of the computational model for the simulation of the Brownian diffusion for predicting the focusing performance of the aerodynamic lenses was discussed. The simulation results showed that for particle diameters less than 50 nm in helium, the Brownian force could significantly affect the beam focusing and particle collection efficiency. Furthermore, the nano-particle trajectories in this range are three-dimensional and an axisymmetric model may not correctly capture the features of particle motions in aerodynamic lenses.

Abstract:
Abstract In this study, we attempted to systematically integrate the acousto-thermal effect and acoustic holography to explore the feasibility of generating controlled thermal fields in a tissue-mimicking material. To enable this capability, our method firstly generates multiple acoustic focal points by using an acoustic hologram-based lens and then constructs a thermal field with multiple elevated-temperature areas based on the acousto-thermal effect. To design the acoustic lens, multiple points are distributed on a constraint plane, which is used as the input for determining the desired phase map based on an iterative phase propagation approach. To characterize the performance of our hologram for generating an acoustic field with concentrated energy at multiple points, on one hand, numerical simulations were performed. On the other hand, experiments were performed by using a 3D printed hologram to generate multiple acoustic focal points and further enable the acousto-thermal effect at multiple target locations of a phantom slice. The thermal image recorded by an infrared camera shows multiple elevated-temperature areas. Moreover, the locations of these elevated-temperature areas agree with the locations of acoustic focal points. We expect this study can contribute to the noncontact control of thermal fields for biomedical applications.

Abstract:
Between May 2016 and March 2018, Oxfam in Iraq, together with the Iraqi Al Amal Association (IAA), collaborated on the ‘Safe access to resilient livelihoods opportunities for vulnerable conflict-affected women in Kirkuk’ project. Funded by UN Women, the project marked the first collaboration between Oxfam and IAA (a women’s rights organization working in Kirkuk). The core themes of the project were women’s rights and economic justice. It aimed to reach women who had been displaced, were returnees at the time, or members of the communities to which displaced people had moved (host communities). This Effectiveness Review focuses on investigating the impact of support to income-generating activities on the women who received this support. The evaluation used a mixed methods design. Acknowledging that different women face different barriers and may have therefore benefitted differently from the project, an initial vulnerability assessment was carried out to bring an intersectional lens to the review. Configurational analysis was used to explore the project's impact, alongside different types of qualitative analysis and descriptive statistics. Find out more by reading the full report now.

Abstract:
This study aims to develop understanding of the interactions between perpetrators of coercive control and intimate partner stalking, and their victims, and how these interactions may be linked to escalating and de-escalating risk of serious harm or homicide. This is a qualitative study, and we interpret our data using the lens of coercive control as described and understood in UK definitions, and the work of Stark (2009). The overall aim is to use the principles of temporal sequencing to organise the behavioural data into a sequence and organise the sequence into stages that represent potential escalating risk - the further along the sequence, the higher the risk of serious harm, with opportunities at every stage to halt the progression. Three pilot tools were developed for professionals in the areas of Intimate Partner Homicide, Domestic Abuse related Suicide and Honour Killing.

Abstract:
At national and aggregate levels, COVID-19 vaccination across G7 countries appears successful. To date, 79.4% of the total population of G7 countries have received a first dose, 72.9% a second, and 45.4% a booster shot (28th April 2022 data). In France, 80.6% of the total population has had a first dose, 78.2 % have had two doses, and 55.4% have had their booster jabs (28th of April 2022 data). In the UK, 79.3% of the total population has received one dose, 74.1% a second one, and 58.5% have received a booster. In Italy, 85.2% of the total population has had a first dose, 80.4% have had two doses, and 66.5% have had their booster jabs (28th of April 2022 data). These figures indicate enthusiasm across G7 countries for COVID-19 vaccines. Yet high overall vaccination rates at the national level, disguise significant in-country disparities. For example, by the end of 2021, less than 50% of residents of the Northern Districts of Marseille were vaccinated, compared with over 70% in wealthier neighbourhoods. In the Ealing borough of Northwest London, 70% of the eligible population has had a first dose – which is almost 10% percent below the national average (4th of April 2022 data). Disparities are also seen in other urban metropolises across the G7. This brief investigates these disparities through the lens of “vaccine (in)equity”, focusing on the role of local actors. It builds on ethnographic and qualitative research carried out in the Northern Districts of Marseille and ongoing research engagement around vaccine equity in Ealing (Northwest London), as well as qualitative research carried out in Italy among networks of healthcare providers, intercultural mediators, and civil society organizations that collaborated during the COVID-19 campaign in the Emilia Romagna region and in Rome. This brief is based on research conducted between October and December 2021 in Marseille and ongoing engagement in Ealing which started in May 2021. It identified how local governments, health actors, community groups and residents play key roles in shaping vaccine (in)equity. This brief was developed for SSHAP by Santiago Ripoll (IDS), Tabitha Hrynick (IDS), Ashley Ouvrier (LaSSA), Megan Schmidt-Sane (IDS), Federico Federici (UCL) and Elizabeth Storer (LSE). It was reviewed by Eloisa Franchi (Università degli Studi di Pavia) and Ellen Schwartz (Hackney Council Public Health). The research was funded through the British Academy COVID-19 Recovery: G7 Fund (COVG7210038). Research was based at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of Susssex, and the Laboratoire de Sciences Sociales Appliquées (LaSSA). The brief is the responsibility of SSHAP.

Abstract:
Fungal pathogens of plants produce a diverse array of small molecules. Often referred to as secondary metabolites because they were thought to be dispensable for basic functions, they may indeed have central roles as signals for the fungal cell, and in interactions with the host. We have identified more than a dozen genes encoding nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NPS) in Cochliobolusheterostrophus, the agent of southern corn leaf blight. The aim of this project was to identify roles of these genes in stress responses and signaling. The first objective was to test a complete collection of C. heterostrophus nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS)-encoding gene deletion mutant and wildtype (WT) strains for sensitivity to various agents of oxidative (ROS) and nitrosative (RNOS) stress, in vitro. The second objective and next step in this part of the project was to study the relevance of sensitivity to ROS and RNOS in the host pathogen interaction, by measuring the production of ROS and RNOS in planta, when plants are inoculated with wild type and mutant strains. A third objective was to study expression of any genes shown to be involved in sensitivity to ROS or RNOS, in vitro and in planta. Another objective was to determine if any of the genes involved in oxidative or nitrosative stress responses are regulated by components of signal transduction pathways (STP) that we have identified and to determine where mechanisms overlap. Study of the collection of nps mutants identified phenotypes relevant for virulence, development and oxidative stress resistance for two of the genes, NPS2 and NPS6. Mutants in genes related to RNOS stress have no virulence phenotypes, while some of those related to ROS stress have reduced virulence as well as developmental phenotypes, so we focused primarily on ROS stress pathways. Furthermore, the identification of NPS2 and NPS6 as encoding for NRPS responsible for siderophore biosynthesis lent a new focus to the project, regulation by Fe. We have not yet developed good methods to image ROS in planta and work in this direction is continuing. We found that NPS6 expression is repressed by Fe, responding over the physiological Fe concentration range. Studying our collection of mutants, we found that conserved MAPK and G protein signal transduction pathways are dispensable for Fe regulation of NPS6, and initiated work to identify other pathways. The transcription factor SreA is one candidate, and is responsible for part, but not all, of the control of NPS6 expression. The results of this project show that the pathogen contends with oxidative stress through several signaling pathways. Loss of the siderophore produced by Nps6 makes the fungus sensitive to oxidative stress, and decreases virulence, suggesting a central role of the ability to sequester and take up extracellular iron in the host-pathogen interaction. Siderophores, and manipulation of Fe levels, could be targets for new strategies to deal with fungal pathogens of maize and other plants.
