Background Shivering can be characterized by its threshold (triggering core temperature), gain (incremental intensity increase with further core hypothermia), and maximum response intensity. Isoflurane produces a clonic muscular activity that is not a component of normal shivering. To the extent that clonic activity is superimposed on normal thermoregulatory shivering, the gain of shivering might be increased during isoflurane anesthesia. Conversely, volatile anesthetics decrease systemic oxygen consumption and peripherally inhibit skeletal muscle strength, which might limit maximum intensity

Despite its popularity in small touch screen devices, this haptic feature is absent in most large displays due to a lack of suitable actuators for such applications. Thus, a growing need exists for haptic actuators capable of producing sufficient vibrations in large touch displays. This study proposes and evaluates a novel electrostatic resonant actuator (ERA) with a moving mass and dual electrodes for increased vibration feedback intensity.

Introduction and Objective: The decrease in muscle mass in the elderly occurs due to molecular changes related to regeneration and degeneration of muscle proteins. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor has a role in angiogenesis and increasing muscle mass through increasing the number and function of satellite cells. Elderly people have many limitations in strengthening exercises for increasing muscle mass, especially in safety and tolerance. Low-intensity strengthening exercise combined with blood flow restriction can be an alternative to increase muscle strength to the same extent as high-inten

Abstract Using a time-dependent axisymmetric numerical model, the authors evaluate whether high-entropy air near the surface in hurricane eyes can substantially increase hurricanes’ maximum intensity. This local high-entropy anomaly is ultimately created by surface entropy fluxes in the eye. Therefore, simulations are conducted in which these surface fluxes are set to zero; results show that the high-entropy anomaly is eliminated, yet the axisymmetric tangential wind speed is only slightly weakened (by ∼4%, on average). These results contradict the hypothesis that transport of high-entropy air

Abstract. Tropical cyclones (TCs) result in widespread damage associated with strong winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge. TC Yasi was one of the most powerful TCs to impact the Queensland coast since records began. Prior to Yasi, the SSTs in the Coral Sea were higher than average by 1–2 ∘C, primarily due to the 2010/2011 La Niña event. In this study, a conceptually simple idealised sensitivity analysis is performed using a high-resolution regional model to gain insight into the influence of SST on the track, size, intensity and associated rainfall of TC Yasi. The IPCC AR6 indicated that the ratio of strong tropical cyclones (TCs) will increase due to climate change, and consequently, the intensified TCs will increase the risk of storm surges. Storm surge is an extremely low-frequency and high-impact event because it depends on the combination of TCs’ intensity, size, path, and speed to the bay. Such an event needs to be discussed in terms of frequency and intensity for climatological study. On the other hand, climate projection is getting longer due to increasing ensemble members facing uncertainty. Therefore, it is difficult to project future chan

A response can be characterized by its threshold (core temperature triggering response), gain (rate at which response intensity increases, once triggered), and maximum response intensity. Reduced gain decreases the efficacy of a thermoregulatory response at a given threshold because response intensity will increase more slowly than usual.
