The Maxwell equations of electromagnetism form the foundation of classical electromagnetism, and are of interest to mathematicians, physicists, and engineers alike. The first part of this thesis concerns boundary value problems for the anisotropic Maxwell equations in Lipschitz domains. In this case, the material parameters that arise in the Maxwell system are matrix valued functions. Using methods from functional analysis, global in time solutions to initial boundary value problems with general nonzero boundary data and nonzero current density are obtained, only assuming the material parameters are bounded and measurable. This problem is motivated by an electromagnetic inverse problem, similar to the classical Calder\'on inverse problem in Electrical Impedance Tomography. The second part of this thesis deals with materials having negative refractive index. Materials which possess a negative refractive index were postulated by Veselago in 1968, and since 2001 physicists were able to construct these materials in the laboratory. The research on the behavior of these materials, called metamaterials, has been extremely active in recent years. We study here refraction problems in the setting of Negative Refractive Index Materials (NIMs). In particular, it is shown how to obtain weak solutions (defined similarly to Brenier solutions for the Monge-Amp\`ere equation) to these problems, both in the near and the far field. The far field problem can be treated using Optimal Transport techniques; as such, a fully nonlinear PDE of Monge-Amp\`ere type arises here.

Full textThe electromagnetic diffraction problem which is governed by the Maxwell equations admits an equivalent formulation in terms of a strongly singular volume integral equation. This thesis aims to examine the integral operator that describes this equation. The first part of this document focuses on the study of its essential spectrum. This analysis is interesting to get the necessary and sufficient conditions of solution uniqueness of the problem especially when we consider the diffraction of waves by negative materials where classic tools lose their usefulness. After justifying the adequate choice of the functional framework, we first study the case where the characteristics parameters of the medium like the electric permittivity and magnetic permeability are piecewise constant with discontinuity across the boundary of the target. In this context, we give a full answer to the question for smooth and Lipschitz domains. Then, by using a localization technique, we give an extension of those results in the case of piecewise regular parameters for two integrals operators, one which corresponds to the dielectric version of the problem and the other for its magnetic version. We end this thesis by the study of the shape derivative of the dielectric and magnetic operators and we derive a new characterization of the shape derivative of the two diffraction problems solution

Full textThe present PhD thesis refers to problems in field theory and quantum mechanics in noncommutative (NC) space. We study some well known physical systems in theoretical physics, such as the Maxwell theory in the presence of external sources, the Pauli equation, the Dirac equation with external fields and the relativistic Hydrogen atom. First we study the U(1)* gauge theory and extend the Seiberg-Witten map to include an external current and formulate classical field equations in NC space. Solutions in the vacuum and in an external magnetic field for a static charge of finite size a is determined. We find that a static charge in NC space, besides being an electric monopole, behaves as a magnetic dipole and the external magnetic field modifies the Coulomb law at large distances, as well as some electromagnetic form factors. In this direction we analyse the arbitrariness in the Seiberg-Witten map and show that, at least to the order studied here, this is equivalent to adding a homogeneous solution to the charge conservation condition. Demanding that the NC magnetic moment be less than the existing error in the measurement of leptons magnetic moment we obtain an upper bound for the NC parameter and its associated fundamental length l. In addition we consider the energy levels of a hydrogen-like atom in the framework of a -modified, due to space noncommutativity, Dirac equation with a Coulomb field. It is shown that the noncommutativity completely breaks the degeneracy of the 2S1/2; 2P1/2 and 2P3/2 levels, allowing for new transition channels. At last, but not least, we construct a nonrelativistic wave equation for spin 1/2 particles through the nonrelativistic limit of the NC Dirac equation. We present a pseudoclassical model (à-la Berezin-Marinov) whose quantization coincides with the nonrelativistic wave equations. By extracting the interaction between a nonrelativistic spin and the magnetic field, from the obtained Pauli equation in NC space, we construct a generalization of the Heisenberg model for two coupled spins in NC space. In such model, it is calculated the transition probability amplitude between two orthogonal EPR (Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen) states submitted in the presence of an oscilatory magnetic field and we shown that some of such transitions, which are forbidden in NC space are possible due to space noncommutativity.

Full textWe present in this work a novel approach of homogenisation technique for Maxwell equations in periodic structures. The solution is supposed to be a sum of a macroscopic field (or a field with slow variations), and a microscopic field (or a perturbation field with high spatial frequency). We obtain a specific Maxwell problem in the basic cell, called the cell-problem whose solution, by a finite element method, allows to find the constitutive law of equivalent media. A study of cell-problem leads to three different situations of homogenisation: the static one, the dynamic one and the high frequency one. The situation of static case corresponds to the constitutive law given by classic homogenisation techniques, the dynamic situation provides a constitutive law depending on frequency, and the situation of high frequency leads to an appropriate behaviour. Ln some cases, the equivalent media is chiral: we see "cross-dependencies", the magnetic induction B depends not only on magnetic field H but on electric field E as well, and the electric induction D depends both on E and H, even with non-chiral components

Full textWe study a viscoelastic model of the solid-solid phase change of olivine to its denser $\beta$-spinel state at high pressures and temperatures reachable in laboratory experiments matching conditions typical of Earth's mantle. Using a previously unknown technique, the equations are transformed to the problem of finding two complex analytic functions in the sample satisfying certain conditions on the outer boundary. The Sherman-Lauricella boundary integral equation is used in a numerical algorithm that eliminates the bottleneck of having to solve a large matrix equation at every timestep. The method is implemented and used to compute the solution of a number of non-axisymmetric test problems, some static and some dynamic in time. Next we develop an alternative formulation in which the Lam\'e equations of linearized elasticity are used to model the deformation of the two phases, and we allow for compressibility. The formulation is novel in that separate reference configurations are maintained for the core and shell regions of the sample that grow or shrink in time by accretion or removal at the boundary, one at the expense of the other. We then compare the behavior of the evolution of this system to the incompressible viscoelastic case and to an alternative elastic model. Finally, we study the stability of circular interfaces with axisymmetric initial data under the evolution equations. For various parameter values of the circular interface evolution, we find families of small perturbations of the circular interface and radial interface velocity jump that either grow or decay exponentially in time. In unstable cases, the growth rate increases without bound as the wave number of the perturbation increases. In stable cases, the evolution equations are well-posed until the interface leaves the stability regime, at which point the numerical solutions blow up in an oscillatory manner. Examples of stable and unstable behavior are presented.

Full textIn plasma physics, the transport of electrons can be described from a kinetic point of view or from an hydrodynamical point of view.Classically in kinetic theory, a Fokker-Planck equation coupled with Maxwell equations is used to describe the evolution of electrons in a collisional plasma. More precisely the solution of the kinetic equations is a non-negative distribution function f specifying the density of particles as a function of velocity of particles, the time and the position in space. In order to approximate the solution of such problems, many computational methods have been developed. Here, a deterministic method is proposed in a planar geometry. This method is based on different high order numerical schemes. Each deterministic scheme used presents many fundamental properties such as conservation of flux particles, preservation of positivity of the distribution function and conservation of energy. However the kinetic computation of this accurate method is too expensive to be used in practical computation especially in multi-dimensional space. To reduce the computational time, the plasma can be described by an hydrodynamic model. However for the new high energy target drivers, the kinetic effects are too important to neglect them and replace kinetic calculus by usual macroscopic Euler models. That is why an alternative approach is proposed by considering an intermediate description between the fluid and the kinetic level. To describe the transport of electrons, the new reduced kinetic model M1 proposed is based on a moment approach for Maxwell-Fokker-Planck equations. This moment model uses integration of the electron distribution function on the propagating direction and retains only the energy of particles as kinetic variable. The velocity variable is written in spherical coordinates and the model is written by considering the system of moments with respect to the angular variable. The closure of the moments system is obtained under the assumption that the distribution function is a minimum entropy function. This model is proved to satisfy fundamental properties such as the non-negativity of the distribution function, conservation laws for collision operators and entropy dissipation. Moreover an entropic discretization in the velocity variable is proposed on the semi-discrete model. Moreover the M1 model can be generalized to the MN model by considering N given moments. The N-moments model obtained also preserves fundamental properties such as conservation laws and entropy dissipation. The associated semi-discrete scheme is shown to preserve the conservation properties and entropy decay

This paper analyses the application in transmission lines of the Boundary Element Method (BEM) of the calculation of potential and electric field, with a focus on electrostatic. The Boundary Element Method is based on an integral formulation that eliminates the discretisation of the domain, remaining only the contour, allowing the calculation of the potential and the electric field in the contour and in the region studied. The work is configured as revision on electrostatic, underscoring the equations of Laplace and Poisson, which will be used to find the integral equations of the contour. There are also several topics related to the electric field of transmission lines, as well as to the standards Brazilian and international recommendations to be used in the design of transmission lines. The Boundary Element Method uses such integral equations for finding the potential and electric field in the contour, and after having known the potential and electric field in the contour, the BEM can be applied in the whole domain, and getting the potential and electric field. Therefore, only the contours of the domain of interest should just be discretized, which backward an enormous advantage on the methods that use formulation differential. This paper will describe the main characteristics of computer code developed and their sub-routines more important. To validate the program, the results will be compared with those calculated by an analytic procedure, being shown the efficiency of discretisation of the soil. The results obtained from analysis of the electric field generated by some silhouettes of transmission lines are presented. The values of the electric field generated by compact structures are compared with conventional structures and reduced structures, also will be compared the values of the gradient of potential on the surface of the conductors and their equivalents capacitances.

Full textThe present PhD thesis is devoted to the analysis of a coupled system of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE), that arises in the modeling of crystal growth from the melt in magnetic fields. The phenomena described by the model are mainly the heat-transfer processes (by conduction, convection and radiation) taking place in a high-temperatures furnace heated electromagnetically, and the motion of a semiconducting melted material subject to buoyancy and applied electromagnetic forces. The model consists of the Navier-Stokes equations for a newtonian incompressible liquid, coupled to the heat equation and the low-frequency approximation of Maxwell''s equations. We propose a mathematical setting for this PDE system, we derive its weak formulation, and we formulate an (initial) boundary value problem that in the mean reflects the complexity of the real-life application. The well-posedness of this (initial) boundary value problem is the mainmatter of the investigation. We prove the existence of weak solutions allowing for general geometrical situations (discontinuous coefficients, nonsmooth material interfaces) and data, the most important requirement being only that the injected electrical power remains finite. For the time-dependent problem, a defect measure appears in the solution, which apart from the fluid remains concentrated in the boundary of the electrical conductors. In the absence of a global estimate on the radiation emitted in the cavity, a part of the defect measure is due to the nonlocal radiation effects. The uniqueness of the weak solution is obtained only under reinforced assumptions: smallness of the input power in the stationary case, and regularity of the solution in the time-dependent case. Regularity properties, such as the boundedness of temperature are also derived, but only in simplified settings: smooth interfaces and temperature-independent coefficients in the case of a stationary analysis, and, additionally for the transient problem, decoupled time-harmonic Maxwell.

Full textThe time-harmonic Maxwell’s equations present several difficulties when the frequency is large, such as the sign-indefiniteness of the variational formulation, the pollution effect and the problematic construction of iterative solvers. We propose a precise and efficient solution strategy that couples high order finite element (FE) discretizations with domain decomposition (DD) preconditioners. High order FE methods make it possible for a given precision to reduce significantly the number of unknowns of the linear system to be solved. DD methods are then used as preconditioners for the iterative solver: the problem defined on the global domain is decomposed into smaller problems on subdomains, which can be solved concurrently and using robust direct solvers. The design, implementation and analysis of both these methods are particularly challenging for Maxwell’s equations. FEs suited for the approximation of the electric field are the curl-conforming or edge finite elements. Here, we revisit the classical degrees of freedom (dofs) defined by Nédélec to obtain a new more friendly expression in terms of the chosen high order basis functions. Moreover, we propose a general technique to restore duality between dofs and basis functions. We explicitly describe an implementation strategy, which we embedded in the open source language FreeFem++. Then we focus on the preconditioning of the linear system, starting with a numerical validation of a one-level overlapping Schwarz preconditioner, with impedance transmission conditions between subdomains. Finally, we investigate how two-level preconditioners recently analyzed for the Helmholtz equation work in the Maxwell case, both from the theoretical and numerical points of view. We apply these methods to the large scale problem arising from the modeling of a microwave imaging system, for the detection and monitoring of brain strokes. In this application accuracy and computing speed are indeed of paramount importance

Full textIn this work, we present theoretical and numerical optimization method for designing magnetic circuits for Hall effect thrusters. These design problems are very difficult inverse ones that we formulate under the form of topology optimization problems. Then, the obtained problems are non convex subject to Maxwell equations like constraints. Some original approaches have been proposed to solve efficiently these topology optimization problems. These approaches are based on the material density model called SIMP approach (Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization) which is a variante of the homogenization method. The results in my thesis allowed to provide optimization source code named ATOP (Algorithm To Optimize Propulsion) unsung in parallel two scientific computing softwares namely Matlab and FEMM (Finite Element Method Magnetics). In ATOP, we use both local optimization algorithms based on sensitivity analysis of the design problem; and global optimization algorithms mainly of type Branch and Bound based on Interval Arithmetic analysis. ATOP will help to optimize both the topological shape of the magnetic circuits and the time and cost of production (design process) of new generations of electrical thrusters

Full textWe develop and study a finite volume method to solve the bidimensional nonstationary Maxwell equations on arbitrary (non-conforming, non-convex, flat. . . ) meshes. We start by the construction of the scheme, which is based on the use of the DDFV discrete operators and a pertinent choice to discretize initial and boundary conditions. Then, we prove that the scheme locally preserves the divergence condition, that a discrete electromagnetic energy is conserved or decreasing (depending on boundary conditions) and that it is positive under a CFL condition. We also show the stability of the scheme under a CFL condition and its convergence for regular and non-regular fields. Then, these results are numerically validated with some tests using different types of meshes. We verify, also, that the use of non-conforming meshes doesn't amplify parasitic reflections. Finally, we coupled the scheme with a PIC method to solve the Maxwell-Vlasov system. We calculate the current density using a generalization of Buneman's method to arbitrary meshes and we prove that discrete charge equations, and thus Gauss' law, are conserved. The coupled problem is numerically validated and the simulation of Landau damping confirms the electric energy decrease with a precision depending on the number of particles per cell

Full textThis thesis describes how electromagnetic waves propagate in magnetized plasmas, when the frequencies are in a range around the electron cyclotron frequency. It focuses on the mathematical analysis of the characteristic varieties which are associated with relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell systems involving fast parameters. The first part is concerned with cold plasmas issued from planetary magnetospheres. We explain how to obtain the dispersion relations in the case where the magnetic field is given by a dipole model. This leads to the detailed study of some algebraic varieties from the cotangent space: the so-called ordinary and extraordinary cones and spheres. The geometrical description of these cones and spheres gives access to a complete classification of the electromagnetic waves which can propagate. Various applications are proposed, concerning the eikonal equation and the absence of purely parallel propagation, or concerning the structure of whistler waves. The second part focuses on the modelling of hot plasmas, typically like those involved in tokamaks. We prove in a realistic context that the propagation of electromagnetic waves is governed by some dielectric tensor. This tensor is obtain via some careful analysis of the kinetic resonances, which are issued from the interactions between the particles (Vlasov) and the waves (Maxwell). It can be expressed as an infinite sum of singular integrals, involving the Hilbert transform. The mathematical meaning of the formula defining this tensor is rigorously justified

Full textIn this thesis, we propose wavenumber explicit convergence analyses of some finite element methods for time-harmonic Maxwell's equations with impedance boundary condition and for the Helmholtz equation with Perfectly Matched Layer (PML). We first study the regularized formulation of time-harmonic Maxwell's equations with impedance boundary conditions (where we add a ∇ div-term to the original equation to have an elliptic problem) and keep the impedance boundary condition as an essential boundary condition. For a smooth domain, the wellposedness of this formulation is well-known. But the well-posedness for convex polyhedral domain has been not yet investigated. Hence, we start the first chapter with the proof of the well-posedness in this case, which is based on the fact that the variational space is embedded in H¹. In order to perform a wavenumber explicit error analysis of our problem, a wavenumber explicit stability estimate is mandatory. We then prove such an estimate for some particular configurations. In the second chapter, we describe the corner and edge singularities for such problem. Then we deduce the regularity of the solution of the original and the adjoint problem, thus we have all ingredients to propose a explicit wavenumber convergence analysis for h-FEM with Lagrange element. In the third chapter, we consider a non conforming hp-finite element approximation for domains with a smooth boundary. To perform a wavenumber explicit error analysis, we split the solution of the original problem (or its adjoint) into a regular but oscillating part and a rough component that behaves nicely for large frequencies. This result allows to prove convergence analysis for our FEM, again explicit in the wavenumber. The last chapter is dedicated to the Helmholtz equation with PML. The Helmholtz equation in full space is often used to model time harmonic acoustic scattering problems, with Sommerfeld radiation condition at infinity. Adding a PML is a way to reduce the infinite domain to a finite one. It corresponds to add an artificial absorbing layer surrounding a computational domain, in which scattered wave will decrease very quickly. We first propose a wavenumber explicit stability result for such problem. Then, we propose two numerical discretizations: an hp-FEM and a multiscale method based on local subspace correction. The stability result is used to relate the choice of the parameters in the numerical methods to the wavenumber. A priori error estimates are shown. At the end of each chapter, we perform numerical tests to confirm our theoritical results

Abstract: This paper analyses the application in transmission lines of the Boundary Element Method (BEM) of the calculation of potential and electric field, with a focus on electrostatic.

Full textIn this thesis, we study some kinetic equations and some partial differential equations with dissipative mechanism, such as Boltzmann equation, Landau equation and some non-symmetric hyperbolic systems with dissipation type. Global existence of solutions or optimal decay rates of solutions for these systems are considered in Sobolev spaces or Besov spaces. Also the smoothing properties of solutions are studied. In this thesis, we mainly prove the following four results, see Chapters 3-6 for more details. For the _rst result, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous nonlinear Landau equation with Maxwellian molecules ( = 0). See from some known results for Boltzmann equation and Landau equation, their global existence of solutions are mainly proved in some (weighted) Sobolev spaces and require a high regularity index, see Guo [62], a series works of Alexandre-Morimoto-Ukai-Xu-Yang [5, 6, 7, 9] and references therein. Recently, Duan-Liu-Xu [52] and Morimoto-Sakamoto [145] obtained the global existence results of solutions to the Boltzmann equation in critical Besov spaces. Motivated by their works, we establish the global existence of solutions for Landau equation in spatially critical Besov spaces in perturbation framework. Precisely, if the initial datum is a small perturbation of the equilibrium distribution in the Chemin-Lerner space eL 2v (B3=2 2;1 ), then the Cauchy problem of Landau equation admits a global solution belongs to eL 1t eL 2v (B3=2 2;1 ). Our results improve the result in [62] and extend the global existence result for Boltzmann equation in [52, 145] to Landau equation. Secondly, we consider the Cauchy problem for the spatially nhomogeneous non-cuto_ Kac equation. Lerner-Morimoto-Pravda-Starov-Xu [117] considered the spatially inhomogeneous non-cuto_ Kac equation in Sobolev spaces and showed that the Cauchy problem for the uctuation around the Maxwellian distribution admitted S 1+ 1 2s 1+ 1 2s Gelfand-Shilov regularity properties with respect to the velocity variable and G1+ 1 2s Gevrey regularizing properties with respect to the position variable. And the authors conjectured that it remained still open to determine whether the regularity indices 1+ 1 2s is sharp or not. In this thesis, if the initial datum belongs to the spatially critical Besov space eL 2v (B1=2 2;1 ), we prove the well-posedness to the inhomogeneous Kac equation under a perturbation framework. Furthermore, it is shown that the weak solution enjoys S 3s+1 2s(s+1) 3s+1 2s(s+1) Gelfand-Shilov regularizing properties with respect to the velocity variableand G1+ 1 2s Gevrey regularizing properties with respect to the position variable. In our results, the Gelfand-Shilov regularity index is improved to be optimal. And this result is the _rst one that exhibits smoothing e_ect for the kinetic equation in Besov spaces. About the third result, we consider compressible Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations arising in plasmas physics, which is a concrete example of hyperbolic-parabolic composite systems with non-symmetric dissipation. It is observed that the Cauchy problem for Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations admits the dissipative mechanism of regularity-loss type. Consequently, extra higher regularity is usually needed to obtain the optimal decay rate of L1(R3)-L2(R3) type, in comparison with that for the global-in-time existence of smooth solutions
