This report collects selected outstanding scientific and technological results obtained within the frame of the European project "FLASiC" (Flash LAmp Supported Deposition of 3C-SiC) but also other work performed in adjacent fields. Goal of the project was the production of large-area epitaxial 3C-SiC layers grown on Si, where in an early stage of SiC deposition the SiC/Si interface is rigorously improved by energetic electromagnetic radiation from purpose-built flash lamp equipment developed at Forschungszentrum Rossendorf. Background of this work is the challenging task for areas like microelectronics, biotechnology, or biomedicine to meet the growing demands for high-quality electronic sensors to work at high temperatures and under extreme environmental conditions. First results in continuation of the project work – for example, the deposition of the topical semiconductor material zinc oxide (ZnO) on epitaxial 3C-SiC/Si layers – are reported too.

Steiger, Kirsten Rachelle. "Crosses, Flowers, and Toads: Classic Maya Bloodletting Iconography in Yaxchilan Lintels 24, 25, and 26." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2244.

Full text
Abstract:
The lintels of Yaxchilan Structure 23 seem to be a demonstrable case wherein specific symbols are singled out and deliberately used in an ordered sequence. Taken together as a unified series, Yaxchilan Lintels 24, 25, and 26 summarize the multi-step process of royal autosacrifice. An iconographic study of the huipil patterns depicted on these lintels yields a better understanding of complex bloodletting iconography and the way in which depictions of ceremonial autosacrifice reinforce Classic Maya beliefs relating to the divine role of Maya elite in eliciting communion with the gods and the subsequent rebirth of the cosmos. The rich iconography of the lintels gives depth to our understanding of importance of royal bloodletting on a cosmic level. Their detailed imagery clarifies what seems to have occurred during each step of the ritual process. The events and symbolism depicted on the three lintels build from each other to form a unified iconographic whole centered on the rebirth of the gods and the cosmos through royal autosacrifice. Iconographic changes from one lintel to the next communicate the pervasiveness of cycles of death and rebirth in Classic Maya cosmology. The symbolism of each lintel communicates the interrelatedness of death and rebirth, while underscoring the role of the ruler in initiating cosmic renewal through autosacrifice. As Yaxchilan Lintels 24, 25, and 26 present themselves in an interrelated series, the subtle differences within the iconography from one lintel to the next represent important progressions within cycles of death and rebirth, elucidating the significance of certain steps within the royal bloodletting ritual and the cosmic rebirth that takes place as a result. As a set, the combined iconographies present on the queen's huipil—crosses, flowers, and toads—epitomize the objective of the ritual, namely rebirthing the cosmos and the gods through the sacrifice of divine blood.

Abstract:

Abstract:
"Sitzkrieg", "Phoney war" and "Drôle de guerre" are usually the terms used to describe the period from September 1st, 1939 to May 10th, 1940, marked by the absence of combat and boredom at the front. However, these terms conceal or even essentialize a more complex time, when memories of the Great War and the modernities of combat were intertwined. The comparison of German, British and French combatants from their mobilization - on 26 August 1939 for the Germans - to the launching of the campaign in the West, highlights this all too often forgotten period.Based on the front journals, diaries, letters and war diaries of the soldiers, but also official archives, this thesis questions the way in which the war that took place during the period from from September 1st, 1939 to May 10th, 1940, by its originality and atypical character, transformed the representations of German, British and French soldiers. This thesis has focused on showing that this pending war is defined first of all by the expectation of combat. The waiting months are for them a period of apprenticeship or relearning of the soldier's trade. This thesis then wanted to show that in all three armies, there is a questioning of the identity specific to combatants. It is a question of rediscovering a legitimacy, a meaning in their place, in their role in this war where they cannot fulfil their primary function, that of fighting

Abstract:
Many non-invasive imaging instruments have been developed in the last 40 years, allowing to obtain images of the interior human body while the patient is still alive. In the contest of Neurology studies, imaging system as CT, MRI, SPECT or PET allows to obtain biomarkers useful to quantitatively distinguish between healthy and unhealthy subjects, evaluate the staging of a Neurological illness in a patient, evaluate the efficacy of a treatment, explore the causes of the illness. In this work MRI and PET imaging system introduced from scratch, going from reconstruction from raw data to state-of-the art post-processing techniques and the computation of more popular biomarkers. After these introduction, three original work using the recent PET/MRI imaging system are presented, with a particular focus on the methods. These three studies involve patients with Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's Disease and Brain Tumor.

Abstract:
<div class="htmlview paragraph">The pistons in a snowmobile engine are subjected to severe temperature conditions not only because snowmobiles are operated in extremely cold temperatures but also because the engine has a high output per unit volume of approximately 150kW/liter. The temperature of the piston top may go from -40°C (when a cold engine is started) to 400°C or higher (when the engine is running at full load). When the piston and cylinder inner wall are cold, the performance of the lubricating oil drops; when they are hot, scuffing may be produced by problems such as tearing of the oil film between the piston and cylinder. When the engine is run at full load for a long time, moreover, the piston is subjected to prolonged high-temperature use, which is conducive to the production of piston boss hole abrasion and ring groove adhesive wear.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">There are many piston surface coatings available to resolve these problems, but we use BF-Coat (Black-Fluoro Compound Coating) on the pistons in our 2-stroke snowmobile engines. BF-Coat has the abrasion resistance of anodic oxide coating and excellent sliding characteristics. By coating the entire piston surface with BF-Coat, we have developed a high-quality piston with a more scuff-resistant skirt and abrasion-resistant pin hole, and a ring groove that is more resistant to adhesive wear.</div>
