Full text"Sitzkrieg", "Phoney war" and "Drôle de guerre" are usually the terms used to describe the period from September 1st, 1939 to May 10th, 1940, marked by the absence of combat and boredom at the front. However, these terms conceal or even essentialize a more complex time, when memories of the Great War and the modernities of combat were intertwined. The comparison of German, British and French combatants from their mobilization - on 26 August 1939 for the Germans - to the launching of the campaign in the West, highlights this all too often forgotten period.Based on the front journals, diaries, letters and war diaries of the soldiers, but also official archives, this thesis questions the way in which the war that took place during the period from from September 1st, 1939 to May 10th, 1940, by its originality and atypical character, transformed the representations of German, British and French soldiers. This thesis has focused on showing that this pending war is defined first of all by the expectation of combat. The waiting months are for them a period of apprenticeship or relearning of the soldier's trade. This thesis then wanted to show that in all three armies, there is a questioning of the identity specific to combatants. It is a question of rediscovering a legitimacy, a meaning in their place, in their role in this war where they cannot fulfil their primary function, that of fighting

Full textAlthough they are widely used, classical vibration measurements have several limitations. Vibration analysis can only identify about 60% of the defects that may occur in mechanical systems. However, the main drawbacks of vibration measurements are the difficult access to the transmission system in order to place the sensor as well as the consequent cost of implementation. This results in sensitivity problems relative to the position of the installation and the difficulty to distinguish the source of vibration because of the diversity of mechanical excitations that exist in the industrial environment.Hence, the Motor Current Signatures Analysis (M.C.S.A.) represents a promising alternative to the vibration analysis and has therefore been the subject of increasing attention in recent years. Indeed, the analysis of electrical signatures has the advantage of being a technically accessible method as well as inexpensive and non-intrusive to the system. Techniques based on currents and voltages only require the motor’s electrical measurements which are often already supervised for the purposes of the control and the protection of the electrical machines. This process was mainly used for the detection of motors faults such as rotor bars breakage and eccentricity faults as well as bearings defects. On the other hand, very little research has been focused on gear faults detection using the current analysis. In addition, three-phase electrical signals are characterized by specific geometric representations related to their waveforms and they can serve as different indicators providing additional information. Among these geometric indicators, the Park and Concordia transforms model the electrical components in a two-dimensional coordinate system and any deviation from the original representation indicates the apparition of a malfunction. Moreover, the differential equations of Frenet-Serret represent the trajectory of the signal in a three-dimensional euclidean space and thus indicate any changes in the state of the system. Although they have been previously used for bearing defects, these indicators have not been applied in the detection of gear defects using the analysis of electrical current signatures. Hence, the innovative idea of combining these indicators with signal processing techniques, as well as classification techniques for gears diagnosis using the three-phase motor’s electrical current signatures analysis is established.Hence, in this work, a new approach is proposed for gear faults diagnosis using the motor currents analysis, based on a set of geometric indicators (Park and Concordia transforms as well as the properties of the Frenet-Serret frame). These indicators are part of a specifically built fault signatures library and which also includes the classical indicators used for a wide range of faults. Thus, a proposed estimation algorithm combines experimental measurements of electrical signals with advanced signal processing methods (Empirical Mode Decomposition, ...). Next, it selects the most relevant indicators within the library based on feature selection algorithms (Sequential Backward Selection and Principal Component Analysis). Finally, this selection is combined with non-supervised classification (K-means) for the distinction between the healthy state and faulty states. It was finally validated with a an additional experimental configuration in different cases with gear faults, bearing faults and combined faults with various load levels

Full textMarotta, Angela. "FOOLING THE SENSE OF TOUCH: NEW EVIDENCE ON THE ROLE OF BODY REPRESENTATIONS IN SHAPING SOMATIC PERCEPTION." Doctoral thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11562/915003.
Full textIn everyday life, we use our hands to explore or manipulate objects. The processing of somatosensory inputs involves different representations of the body, and the resulting subjective experience of touch is strongly influenced by the type of body representation used for sensory processing. In the first instance tactile stimuli are processed within somatotopic maps that preserve the topographical organization of the physical body. Successively, the somatosensory inputs are further processed within the body schema which takes track of the postural changes of the body. In this framework, the current thesis is aimed at investigating the specific role of somatotopic maps and body schema in modulating the multi-digit tactile and thermo-tactile perception. This purpose has been achieved by “fooling” the sense of touch through two somatosensory illusions: Aristotle’s illusion and the Thermal Grill Illusion. In the first study we investigated the tactile processing occurring within the somatotopic maps. We approached to this issue by studying the multi-digit tactile perception as influenced by alterations in somatosensory maps. To address this specific aim, focal hand dystonia was chosen as a model of altered somatotopic maps. We used the Aristotle’s illusion to specifically investigate the functional meaning of the interplay between different fingers in tactile perception. Since, behavioural and neurophysiological studies indicate that the mechanisms underlying this illusion involve primary somatosensory cortex, and since a number of FHD neuroimaging studies have widely demonstrated anatomical alterations in the primary somatosensory cortex of FHD patients, we would expect that the Aristotle’s illusion is compromised in focal hand dystonia. This result would demonstrate a case of interdigit functional somatosensory alterations as specific counterpart of the widely reported anatomical alteration of somatosensory maps. However, FHD shares common somatosensory alterations features with other forms of focal dystonia and with PD. This is probably due to a common underlying factor: the abnormal basal ganglia activity. In order to exclude any possible role of basal ganglia in potentially modulation of Aristotle’s illusion in FHD we performed two experiments in which we compared the Aristotle’s illusion in FHD with other forms of focal dystonia and PD. Altogether, the two experiments: 1) confirm that fingers representation is specifically altered in FHD, and 2) demonstrate that abnormal alterations in fingers representation determine distorted tactile perception of objects simultaneously touched by different digits. The second study investigated the role the of body schema in processing thermotactile stimuli. More precisely, we studied how multiple thermotactile innocuous stimuli are combined in an unusual paradoxical painful sensation, termed Thermal Grill Illusion (TGI). In the classical TGI, innocuous warm and cold stimuli are arranged in a warm-cold-warm fashion. Intriguingly, this type of stimulation evokes a feeling of burning heat. In the second study, we applied the warm-cold-warm pattern on the first three digits (index, middle, and ring) and we observed whether the TGI was modulated by changing the relative spatial position of the fingers, that is by crossing or uncrossing the middle over the index. Using this simple method we found that the perceptual experience of paradoxical pain might arise from the integration of multiple thermal inputs based on the relative position of the stimulated fingers according to external frame of reference. Indeed, in the crossed position, the paradoxical heat sensation was reduced when the cooled finger was the middle, and increased when the cooled finger was the index. This interesting result indicates that the brain takes into account the relative spatial position of each stimulus to produce the paradoxical heat sensation termed TGI.
