In Korea, the March First Movement in 1919 fused Christian identity with nationalistic rituals, making Korean Protestants respectable patriots in the eyes of their countrymen. In China, however, the fledgling nationalism nurtured by the May Fourth Movement in the same year soon gave rise to strong anti-Christian sentiments, culminating in major waves of anti-Christian movements in the 1920s. How do we explain these different outcomes? We argue that the encounters between two different types of Protestantism and two variant forms of nationalism led Korea and China on divergent paths.

Chinese language has changed drastically in the recent century. Papers on the language development mainly stress four big events in the Chinese history that imposed changes in language, i.e. The May Fourth Movement (1919), establishment of the People’s Republic of China (1949), Cultural Revolution (1966), and China’s reform and opening (1978). According to the features of recent neologisms, we suggest that the widening gap between rich and poor should be considered as the fifth milestone for changes in Chinese language.

The ‘Epilogue’ considers the harsh condemnation of Confucianism in the early decades of the twentieth century by leaders of the nationalist May Fourth movement. The Chinese Communist Party was founded in Shanghai in 1921 and, despite two decades of struggle with the Nationalist Party under Chiang Kai-shek who believed in the basis of Confucian ideology, the People's Republic of China was established by Mao Zedong in 1949. Confucianism was deemed the enemy of the proletariat and the Communist state. The 1976 Cultural Revolution set China on a course of economic and political reform, and since 2000 the government have endorsed Confucianism. But what does the future hold for Confucianism in China?

At work in Peking Opera Blues is a deeply intertextual relation to the film adaptations (three-women films) of a popular form of sentimental romance fiction - mandarin duck and butterfly fiction (yuanyang hudie) - which emerged when China, after thousands of years of dynastic rule, first experimented with democracy as an alternative mode of governance and lifestyle. This “fiction of comfort” came under attack by the May Fourth Movement after 1919, and was eventually consigned to the margins of modern Chinese literature. Reading through the lens of “three-women” films like Fate in Tears and Laughters (1932), Three Modern Girls (1933), Sun Moon Star (1960), and The Story of Three Loves (1963), and their women-centered narratives, enables a reading of Peking Opera Blues which reveals some of the ways in which Tsui Hark is able to emphasize the idea of women as narrative images; to highlight female agencies and subjectivities and to explore the rising status of women in the more globally connected, post-Confucian, and post patriarchal consumerist society of Hong Kong.
