Abstract:
Only two weeks after the fall of Saigon in May 1975, Khmer Rouge forces seized the American merchant ship SS Mayaguez (1944) off the Cambodian coast, setting up a Marine rescue and recovery battle on the island of Koh Tang. This battle on 12–15 May 1975 was the final U.S. military episode amid the wider Second Indochina War. The term Vietnam War has impeded a proper understanding of the wider war in the American consciousness, leading many to disassociate the Mayaguez incident from the Vietnam War, though they belong within the same historical frame. We reported that pre-treatment sera autoantibodies (auto-Abs) are implicated in the pathogenesis of irAEs (Johannet et al. CCR 2022). We here examined the rate and patterns of N-Tox in melanoma patients who received ICI in the adjuvant setting and whether baseline specific serum auto-Abs are associated with N-Tox. Black pod or Phytophthora pod rot is the most economically important and widespread disease of cacao, Theobroma cacao L. Total losses due to Phytophthora exceed $400 million worldwide (1), and several species are known to attack cacao with P. palmivora (E.J. Butler) E. J. Butler as the most common. All plant parts are infected, but pod infections are particularly damaging. Symptoms resembling those of black pod disease were observed at the National Plant Germplasm Collection System of cacao at the USDA-ARS Tropical Agriculture Research Station (TARS) in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico for a number of ye

Worldwide cacao pod rot is a devastating disease of Theobroma cacao, infected cacao pods turn necrotic reducing yield up to 30%. From July 2020 to August 2021, a survey was conducted at the USDA-ARS cacao germplasm collection located at Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Incidence of cacao pod rot was 73.9%, observed in 142 of the 196 accessions sampled. The disease was observed at different stages of pod development (small, green, mature pods, and dry mummified large pods). Diseased tissue from three cacao pods (1 mm2) per each cacao accession was surface disinfested by immersion in 70% ethanol for one m

Applying selected concepts of organizational theory to the Mayaguez incident of 1975 leads to a more comprehensive understanding of events and more accurate lessons learned. Application of organizational theory to the Mayaguez incident demonstrates the decision processes at the executive level left the military operation vulnerable to failure. Henry Mintzberg's structural contingency model and Lee Bowman and Terrence Deal's frames model are used and are applied to executive-level decisions. The rationale behind focusing on the executive level is twofold: first, it is where final critical

This chapter discusses the emergence of rally-round-the-flag outcomes during four military confrontations: the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Mayaguez incident, the invasion of Panama, and the Iraq War. The chapter describes the historical context of each event, how the event unfolded, the public reaction of the president, the reactions of other politicians and the media, and the public’s reaction. The analysis highlights the importance of presidential nation-affirming rhetoric, which propagated a public desire to restore collective honor and gain the respect of other nations via military action ag
