Abstract:
Joy in the Act of Drawing: Maybeck's Palace of Fine Arts focuses on Bernard Maybeck's working drawings for the surviving fragment of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Because it was originally designed as a temporary structure, it has been dismissed by some critics as the roughly detailed product of a speedy production process. However, Alexander Ortenberg shows that the working drawings were carefully produced in accordance with the professional standards of American Beaux-Arts architecture. What appear to be crude details were the product of thoughtful study, in which the charcoal of the earlier sketches was translated into the hard ink line of working drawings. Exploiting the liveliness of the drawing medium, Maybeck invented architectural details that preserved the freshness of his initial sketches and helped to define the theatrical character of the building.

Abstract:
The unbuilt proposals for the 1939 San Francisco World's Fair offer a cross section of designs put before the public in a formative moment just before modernism came to dominate architectural discourse and production. Projects by luminaries Bernard Maybeck and Richard Neutra joined projects by Joseph Strauss and Henry Killam Murphy. Here were architectural hopefuls at the nadir of the Great Depression attempting to draw their way into the commission of a lifetime. Thus, a Beaux-Arts bohemian competed with a sincere modernist, a self-promoting engineer, and America's leading practitioner in China. At the same time, the proposals were part of the larger economic and political landscape of San Francisco, as neighborhood associations and politicians used them to attract the fair to their part of the city. More than pie in the sky, these designs show in amplified form the way architecture is embedded in public discourse as a form of persuasion, a kind of politics by other means through which elites and other stakeholders argued for their preferred reality. As tools of intra-urban boosterism, these plans reveal the competing interests within San Francisco at a pivotal moment in its development, when its future lay in the formation of a regional metropolis that could compete with Los Angeles for commerce on the West Coast and beyond.

Ouellet, Hubert. "En harmonie : les oeuvres architecturales résidentielles par le mouvement Arts & Crafts réalisées à flanc de coteaux par Bernard Maybeck, à Berkeley en Californie (1892-1904)." Master's thesis, Université Laval, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11794/25429.

Full text
Abstract:
Using residential architecture constructed by Bernard Maybeck (1862-1957) in the hillside of Berkeley (United States of America, California) during the period comprised between 1892 and 1904, this thesis shows how was articulated a unique architectural language inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and more specifically the English author, theorician and critic John Ruskin (1819-1900). Under Maybeck's guidance, the architectural ensemble that he affectionately called his « gothic houses » became an important tool helping the establishment of a new way of life centered around architecture and nature. Berkeley's hillsides and landscape influenced considerably the artistic research, as the houses had to reflect their surroundings. Understanding this architectural development as an interpretation of the landscape and of the nature of Gothic as defined by Ruskin, Maybeck shows the necessity to go back to a « simpler » life where man and nature are in harmony.

Abstract:
This project is an experimentation and examination of contemporary computer vision and machine learning, with an emphasis on machine generated imagery and text, as well as object identification. In other words, this is a study of how computers and machines are learning to see and recognize the world. Computer vision is a kind of visual communication that we rarely think of as being designed. With an emphasis on written and visual research, this project aims to comprehend what exactly goes into the creation of machine generated imagery and artificial vision systems. I have spent the last couple of months looking through the lense of cameras, object identification apps and generative neural networks in order to try and understand how AI perceives reality. This resulted in a mixed media story about images and vision, told through the perspective of a fictional AI character. Visit www.maybe-probably.com to view the project.

Kudo, Akemi. "Mr Maybe : Fei Ming as a pastoral fiction writer." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1993. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/29565/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with Fei Ming (the pen-name of Feng Wenbing, 1901-1967), a writer who was active mainly in the 1920s and 1930s and who has been disregarded since 1949 until only recently. Fei Ming's works include stories, essays and poems, and this thesis concentrates on his pastoral stories written between 1923 and 1932. The aim of this thesis is threefold. First, it attempts to illuminate the individuality of Fei Ming's pastoral stories by analysing their thematic and stylistic characteristics. The second objective is to examine the influence of foreign modern pastoral stories and Chinese traditional pastoral works on Fei Ming. The third is to outline the changes in his pastoral fiction writing. In so doing, I hope this thesis will invite a fresh look at this writer who is barely mentioned in China, Japan and the West, and has never been made the subject of a systematic critical study. The thesis consists of seven chapters: Chapter One describes the literary life of Fei Ming. Chapter Two introduces an outline of Fei Ming's creative writings. Chapter Three discusses the thematic characteristics of his stories about the countryside in Southern China. Chapter Four investigates the pastoral elements in his stories. The term, 'pastoral' is defined, and the argument on influences on Fei Ming's work is developed. Chapter Five analyzes the stylistic characteristics of his pastoral stories. Chapter Six explores the novel. The Life of Mr Maybe, which I define as 'mock-pastoral'. Chapter Seven examines the serial published in 1947-1948, "After Mr Maybe Flew in an Aeroplane" to see how Fei Ming's views of country life changed after 1932. The conclusion discusses Fei Ming's influence on Chinese writers from the late 1920s onwards and sums up Fei Ming's achievements as a fiction writer.

Full text
Abstract:
This deliverable presents the activities performed on the ExaQUte project task 4.5 Development of interface to fast local storage. The activities have been focused in two aspects: reduction of the storage space used by applications and design and implementation of an interface that optimizes the use of fast local storage by MPI simulations involved in the project applications. In the rst case, for one of the environments involved in the project (PyCOMPSs) the default behavior is to keep all intermediate les until the end of the execution, in case these les are reused later by any additional task. In the case of the other environment (HyperLoom), all les are deleted by default. To unify these two behaviours, the calls \delete object" and \detele le"have been added to the API and a ag \keep" that can be set to true to keep the les and objects that maybe needed later on. We are reporting results on the optimization of the storage needed by a small case of the project application that reduces the storage needed from 25GB to 350MB. The second focus has been on the de nition of an interface that enables the optimization of the use of local storage disk. This optimization focuses on MPI simulations that may be executed across multiple nodes. The added annotation enables to de ne access patters of the processes in the MPI simulations, with the objective of giving hints to the runtime of where to allocate the di erent MPI processes and reduce the data transfers, as well as the storage usage.
