Lewis, Colin A. "Obituary: John Mayne English 1922-2013." The Ringing World, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004782.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1962 John moved south to Johannesburg, but that bustling city held few attractions for him and he moved further south, to the cathedral city of Grahamstown. Grahamstown, with its nineteenth century Gothic cathedral, elegant Georgian buildings, and distinctive grandeur of Rhodes University, St Andrew's College and other buildings designed by Herbert Baker and his colleagues, suited John. He particularly enjoyed the academic, social, artistic and dramatic life of the community, where many older members of society were distinguished old-Africa hands. John thoroughly enjoyed Grahamstown where, in the partnership of Hoskins and English, he made his mark in the restoration and extension of many significant buildings. His addition to the Anglican chapel at Hog's Back is a masterpiece, as is his incorporation of the old fayade into the rebuilding and extension of the Magistrates' Court.

Xu, Qing. "Coastal rural village planning with visual simulation at Miners Bay, Mayne Island." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31694.

Full text
Abstract:
This project describes different possibilities for compatible development in a small rural coastal community, Miners Bay on Mayne Island, and uses computerized 3D tools to depict the development options in order to develop, test and revise the design. The site is the core of Miners Bay where the commercial and community center of Mayne Island has been located for more than 100 years. Mayne Island is part of the southern Gulf Islands chain of British Columbia. Its geographical location is in Active Pass, a busy waterway between Vancouver Island and the lower mainland. The community is rich in historical features and presents unique beautiful ocean views. The residents have desires for a more sustainable form of development. Information from a previous project in Landscape architecture at UBC provided an understanding of landscape features at the local level (Mayne Island). General landscape character and building character, circulation and orientated ocean views established the key criteria for landscape conservation, view protection, and community development to be explored in the design. Two community development scenarios were developed to examine expansion of shoreline-oriented commercial tourism development while protecting rural character and ocean views, under existing and alternative planning resolutions. 3D modeling and computer animation were used as a major tool in the stages of project inventory, site analysis and conceptual design and processed vital in demonstrating and testing the spatial results of plans. Recommendations for revising current planning policies include more specific protection of key view corridors to the ocean; clustering of new commercial tourism development to protect key views, improving building orientation to the ocean, and creating a denser commercial area and dispensing building pattern in the village; as well as other community design options to increase community viability while retaining the rural character.
Applied Science, Faculty of
Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), School of
Graduate

Abstract:
This project is an experimentation and examination of contemporary computer vision and machine learning, with an emphasis on machine generated imagery and text, as well as object identification. In other words, this is a study of how computers and machines are learning to see and recognize the world. Computer vision is a kind of visual communication that we rarely think of as being designed. With an emphasis on written and visual research, this project aims to comprehend what exactly goes into the creation of machine generated imagery and artificial vision systems. I have spent the last couple of months looking through the lense of cameras, object identification apps and generative neural networks in order to try and understand how AI perceives reality. This resulted in a mixed media story about images and vision, told through the perspective of a fictional AI character. Visit www.maybe-probably.com to view the project.

Clark, Alan G. "Characteristics of trappers in Maine, 1976 to 1980." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45715.

Full text
Abstract:
Characteristics of Maine trappers were investigated by monitoring license buying behavior from 1976-1980 and by using a mail questionnaire after the trapping season in 1980. Trapping license sales increased 56% during the 5-year study period. From 37-41% of individuals who first purchased a license during this time period did not purchase one the next year. Most individuals who purchased a second license continued to purchase one. Through the questionnaire, individuals described attitudes, behaviors, and preferences. A disproportionately large number of individuals who claimed to be professional or semi-professional trappers attended public hearings. Although money received for fur pelts is important, the most common reason given for trapping was the challenge involved. Fall land trapping was the most preferred type of trapping and the one in which most trappers participated. Fox was the most preferred upland species and muskrat was the most preferred aquatic species. Detailed information was obtained from individuals who trapped in the fall. Effort per day of season was estimated in both trapper-days and average trap-nights. The problems rated highest by trappers in Maine involved people. Top-rated objectives of trappers were maintaining animal populations in proper balance with carrying capacity and maximizing pelt primeness. When presented with regulation options, respondents rated a species bag limit per trapper as the most acceptable option even though this regulation has been opposed consistently at public hearings. Information on trappers, animals, and harvests is combined into a Management system.
Master of Science

Evanno, Philippe. "La Terreur en Maine-et-Loire." Paris 4, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002PA040090.

Full text
Abstract:
At first, the subject is considered in its origin : considering the decisions to be taken by local authorities (in connection with those of the national Assembly) and, in particular, those of the department directory, between july 1790 and march 1793, what can explain the rebellion against the call up of 300 000 men ? What rôle are then playing the missionned representatives and the new jurisdiction that they set up : military commissions and revolutionary committees ? Which place is then left to local authorities in managing affairs ? Next, from the exhaustive analysis of the miltary commissions archives, it remains to understand who are, between march 1793 to floreal of year II (may 1794), the victims of repression, their origin, geographical as well as social in particular, and their convictions ? How is repression organised, who is effecting arrests, procceding to interrogatories, passing sentences and carrying out executions ? Is it possible to evaluate the effects of Terror in Maine-et-Loire ? Last, does Terror come out unforseably in the revolutionnary process or is it present, at least as a germ, since the establishment of new institutions ? Is it a skid or the very spirit of the revolutionnary process ?
