Abstract:
An investigation was conducted to determine hepatitis A virus (HAV) and norovirus (NV) presence in marine recreational waters (MRWs) from two Mexican tourists beaches (Altata and Mazatlan), located at the northwestern state of Sinaloa, Mexico. Also, Binary Logistic Regression (BLR) analyses were conducted between physicochemical parameters (temperature, turbidity and salinity) and viral organisms (HAV and NV). A total of 32 MRWs samples were collected from April to July of 2006. Samples were processed according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) adsorption-elution method. Overall, 18 MRWs samples (56.3%) were positive for HAV and NV; 4 (22.2%) were obtained from Altata and 14 (77.8%) from Mazatlan. HAV was detected in 3 MRWs samples (9.4%) and NV in 15 samples (46.8%). Phylogenetic analysis showed the presence of genotype I sub genotype B for HAV and NV genogroup II. BLR analysis showed significant correlations between NV and physicochemical parameters (temperature, turbidity and salinity) (p=0.017, p=0.08, p=0.048, respectively). No significant correlation between physicochemical parameters and HAV was observed. The results indicated that MRW quality of Sinaloa beaches is affected by human faecal pollution. Viral surveillance programs should be implemented to minimize health risks to bathers.

Abstract:
Su tiempo promedio en prisión es menos de tres años y sin experiencia penitenciaria previa, conocido comúnmente como “población penitenciaria primaria”.ABSTRACTThe objective of this investigation was to know the relationship between the type of crime and the schooling level of the inmates in Ahome, Culiacán and Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico. The approach is qualitative. Following Taylor and Bodgan (1987) twenty women were interviewed. The results make it possible to conclude that the majority are imprisoned for crimes against health, transgression committed not only by those with low school education, but also by those who hold a degree. Their average time in prison is less than three years and no previous prison experience, commonly known as "primary prison population".

Abstract:
This thesis examines the anthropology of markets and shopping practices in Mercado Pino Suárez, an indoor market located in Centro Historico in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico. The research objective of this anthropological fieldwork is to investigate how markets are a center for social relationships that influence shopping and consumption. Sociability between consumers and vendors is significant as it defines a market. The field research is a two-month-long summer project conducted to understand why people shop at the market, with a major focus on shopping for food related products. Interviews and participant observation, including participation as a consumer or as a volunteer vendor, support observations of social shopping practices that occur within the market. Shoppers attend the market for various reasons, such as purchasing for convenience, price, and quality of the products. However, this thesis will elucidate how shoppers visit the market for the experience of socializing which contributes to familiarity and trust from knowing vendors and their products. Mercado Pino Suárez exemplifies how the market is a shopping experience where vendors and shoppers can be neighbors, friends, and family. Shopper and vendor interactions go beyond economic reasons where people share ideas about food and cuisine, thus illuminating the market’s significance in shaping local culture.
