Abstract:
This article provides a comparative analysis of Ivan Mazepa – the protagonist in the poems Mazeppa (1819) by George Gordon Byron and Poltava (1829) by Alexander Pushkin. It gives a brief outline of who Mazepa was to identify the reasons for this historical figure to have attracted the considerable attention of the Great Romantics. Deploying the theoretical method on recognition and the juxtaposition of differences of literary works within Reception theory developed by Mary N. Layoun, the article examines aspects of dissimilarity in the literary portrayals of the image of Mazepa in Byron’s and Pushkin’s poems. The juxtaposition of Mazeppa and Poltava explains ways in which details from Mazepa’s biography and exploits that inspired Byron’s creative imagination and kindled his desire to recount the story of Mazepa can be contrasted with Pushkin’s presentation of the same protagonist as generated by his own viewpoints on the political aspects surrounding the events of the Great Northern War, specifically the Battle of Poltava. The article applies Hans Robert Jauss’s concept of the horizon of expectations to examine the case of Pushkin’s reception of Byron. It argues that what underlies the nature of Pushkin’s disagreement with Byron is his emotional involvement with the subject matter.

Abstract:
The Mazeppa sketch, written on pages 20–18 of Liszt’s Sketchbook N6, was composed a considerable time before the well-known study entitled Mazeppa (1841; 1851). In the past Rudolf Kókai and Dieter Torkewitz have written a few words about this composition. However, neither Kókai nor Torkewitz understood that the sketch, after a lengthy deletion, was continued on pages 19 and 18. All in all there are around 30 bars of this work, enough to reconstruct it. The result is a quite interesting, wild ‘Galop,’ most probably composed on ‘31 Mai Ecorchebeuf,’ according to the date written at the bottom of page 18 through the notes. If this is right, it means that the Mazeppa sketch stems from 1832, for Liszt stayed from 8 May until shortly after 25 June 1832 in Normandy, in the village of Écorchebeuf. In the spring of that year Franz Liszt frequented the home of Victor Hugo (nowadays the museum Maison Victor Hugo); he met there the painter Boulanger a few times, too. Louis Boulanger (1806–1867) had, in 1827, already exhibited his splendid Le Supplice de Mazeppa in the ‘Salon du Louvre’. Hugo, who was closely befriended with Boulanger, was so impressed by this painting that he wrote shortly afterwards his poem Mazeppa, which appeared in 1829 in the collection Les Orientals. So, in 1832 Liszt had regular contact with people who were most profoundly infected by the Mazeppa virus and he will have read Hugo’s poem at that time, maybe at his holiday address in Écorchebeuf. It is quite likely that then, under the direct influence of Hugo’s poem, he tried to represent in music the hellish ride of the young Cossack on a Ukrainian horse.

Abstract:
Critics generally note a big shift in Lord Byron's style: the potently gloomy Eastern Tales, showcasing the magnetically alienated Byronic Hero, give way to a sharply contrasting style, that of the conversational Don Juan (1819-24). Accounts of Byron's career tend to treat this alteration as sudden or whimsical. In fact, it is intrinsically tied to exile, a connection illustrated by the verse-romance Mazeppa (1819), in many ways the forerunner of the contemporaneously begun Don Juan. Mazeppa is Byron's most elaborate-even systematic-depiction of exile; its hero, tied onto a wild horse and sent off into the wilderness, learns to endure amid dramatically changed circumstances. As its hero describes his travails, Mazeppa yokes together a number of entities forced to interact, uneasy pairings that include horse/water, man/horse, past/present, history/romance, and narrator/auditor. Dialogic interchange thus shapes Byron's portrayal of exile; the conversational style he developed in Italy underscores M. M. Bakhtin's emphasis on interaction across boundaries. Byron's investment in alteration helps us to frame his seemingly dismissive treatment of some contemporaries, particularly the Laker poets. As Mazeppa particularly demonstrates in its elaborate echoing of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1798, revised 1817), Byron's denouncement of what he called the "wrong revolutionary poetical system" was not repudiation so much as interchange, from the vantage of exile. Unlike the Rime, Mazeppa envisions narrative as subject to unpredictable recontextualization, a submission that marks exiled poet and distanced reader as the most important dialogic pairing in Byron's late work.

Abstract:
In his poetry and in letters Byron occasionally writes of horses and uses the imagery of horse riding. This essay examines Byron’s representation of human-horse interactions and the ways in which the poet deploys the images of horse riding in The Giaour, Mazeppa, and Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. I would like to suggest that Byron’s representation of horses may be seen as figuratively reflective of his poetic development from the passion-spurred ride of the Giaour to the harmonious bond between horse and human that Mazeppa learns through his wild ride.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to reassess the value of the horse-figure in the tale of Mazeppa. The study begins with an attempt to establish the status of the tale as a Romantic myth in Western European culture and identifies four texts as a corpus of study: Voltaire's Histoire de Charles XII, roi de Suede, Lord Byron's Mazeppa, its translation into French by Amedee Pichot and, finally, Victor Hugo's 'Mazeppa' from his collection Les Orientales. Using methodologies derived from the history of ideas, psychoanalysis, and contextual and intertextual approaches, it is proposed that these four texts form a chain of meaning. The texts are examined at symbolic, structural and textual levels. At these levels, the concepts of the 'centaur complex' and the 'Pegasus complex' are introduced, enabling the outline of the horse as a representation of poetic inspiration and genius to emerge. This appears implicitly or explicitly in the texts and is effected through a dialectical process of fusion and inversion occurring within the man-animal relationship. As a result, the horse becomes not only a thematic link, or 'bridge', horizontally tying the chain of texts together, but it also endorses, within each text, a deeper, vertical function supporting metapoetic meaning and thus reaching the field of poetic ontology. The figurative horse is the 'real' creative surge for each writer within himself and between each text. Poetic creation springs from a hollow wound which the horse, representing the urge of expression, comes to fill and heal. This language transcends nationalities, but, as the story of Mazeppa was written both in English and in French, and also for other methodological reasons, the thesis is distinctively comparative. However, the double function of the horse implies that each text is studied on its own as well as in relation to the other texts of the corpus.

Abstract:
Abstract AS musicians, we engage in an art which hopes to communicate something about our world and even, in its best moments, elicit both an intellectual and emotional response from an audience. No matter how much we become involved in the preparation of that communication, success or failure in the last analysis depends a great deal on the accuracy, speed, and refinement of purely physical responses. Yet, a curious contra diction attends the field of musical performance with regard to the matter of maintaining this physical aspect of our being. It has been pointed out often enough that the human body is not a mechanical device and is subject to considerable variation from day to day or even from hour to hour.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Parisina (written in England but on an Italian topic) and Mazeppa (written in Italy but on a non-Italian topic) as exemplary instances of Byron’s creation of an Anglo-Italian poetics based on displacement in his narrative verse. It considers them separately and together as a useful way of understanding the ‘intricate fabrication of Byron’s Anglo-Italian identity’. It also considers them ‘in dialogue’ and in relation to Italy in order to throw new light on two works that are generally sidelined in the Byron canon. In Parisina, Byron offers an Italian cautionary tale to Regency England, one in which he can ‘poetically release’ things in his own life that he had to publicly suppress in England. In Mazeppa, instead, Byron explores key aspects of his life in Italy in an imagined location that is displaced from Italy rather than to it. As this essay shows, both narrative poems demonstrate, in contradiction to much critical thinking about Byron, the importance of ‘not being on the spot’ to both the poet’s narrative method and his poetic self-fashioning.

Abstract:

Abstract:
