Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of the work of William Mason, an eighteenth-century poet who, though highly regarded in his own time, is little known in ours. The thesis seeks to revalidate Mason as a poet worthy of attention in the twenty-first century. The Introduction contextualises Mason, both socially and culturally. Emphasis is given to the importance of Whig politics in his life and works, and to the influence upon him from an early age of the philosophy of John Locke. Attention is also drawn to Mason’s ability as an innovative adaptor of ancient genres, the importance to him of Milton’s verse, and the relevance of his ‘public’ poetry to modern Britain. The first part of Chapter One provides an overview of Mason’s poetic trajectory, from his popularity in the eighteenth century to his decline in the nineteenth. The general loss of interest in eighteenth-century poetry, and its revival in the twentieth, is considered. In the second part of the chapter, Mason’s youthful poetic claim to be the literary and moral descendant of Milton and Pope is examined in the context of his early monody, and its innovative purpose and style. Attention is drawn to the intertextuality that informs much of the poetry discussed in this thesis. The treatment of the Pindaric ode in the hands of earlier poets, and Mason’s far more authentic one, are subsequently discussed. Examples are given which illustrate Mason’s successful treatment of the genre, and of his concern with the preoccupations of the age. In Chapter Two Mason’s georgic, The English Garden, is examined. Consideration is given to Mason’s choice of Miltonic form, to the poet’s employment of his subject, gardening, as a representation of the state of the nation, and to the poet’s personal involvement in the verse in a variety of manifestations. His success in matching subject to form is demonstrated. Mason’s correspondence with Walpole concerning the American war, his collaboration with William Burgh, and his use of prose as well as poetry for political purposes, are discussed. Chapter Three provides a brief account of the attitudes to satire from the late seventeenth century to Pope’s death, and goes on to look at Mason’s own satire. His satires are discussed in the context of his political and literary relationships with Walpole, Gray, Pope and Churchill, and his concern with the issue of slavery is foregrounded. The individual satires are examined, and examples explored of Mason’s novel and varying employment of the genre in the service of his Whig viewpoint. The Conclusion draws together the points made in the body of the text, and claims a place for Mason amongst the eighteenth-century poets rediscovered by recent scholarship.

These plants are considered problem species as they invade recently abandoned or burned areas, and areas under anthropogenic impacts. In Brazil, Pteridium arachnoideum (Kaulf.) Maxon. has become an important problem species at the Cerrado (Tropical Savanna) and Atlantic Forest biomes. To understand the mechanisms underlying invasive plants success are one of the greatest challenges of the last decades. Among the interaction that can influence this success, we find allelopathy. However, untill now we have few evidences for this phenomenon on these plants, especially from the isolation and indentification of secondary metabolites with activities related to allelopathy. Therefore, the present work aimed to evaluate the allelopathy role by direct phytotoxicity and abiotic changes in Pteridium arachnoideum (Kaulf.) Maxon. dominance in the areas it invades. To do so, the bioguided phytochemical study of this plant tissues and litter was performed, as well as the evaluation of the phytotoxic activity of phenolic compounds present in its litter and of its isolated and identified secondary metabolite against the early development of sesame, verifying the presence of this compound in the soil, its quantification, and evaluation of its interactions with physical and chemical soil characteristics. The phytochemical study led to the isolation and identification of a majoritarian compound in the plants green fronds and litter, the proanthocianidin selligueian A. This is the first time this compound is described for P. arachnoideum, as well as for the Dennstaediaceae family. Selligueain A showed phytotoxic activity against wheat coleoptiles elongation, with inhibitory activity over 71%, and IC50 of 0.69 mM. The poliphenols enriched fraction extracted from P. arachnoideum litter exert inhibitory activity against the early development of bioindicators species, native and invasive species of the Cerrado biome, specially over the development of these seedlings roots, besides activity against the metaxylem cells of sesame, and against chlorophyll content of sesame and the native weed Setaria parviflora. The allelopathic potential of the main poliphenolic compound of P. arachnoideum, selligueain A, was also evaluated against the early growth of sesame seedlings, promoting root and shoot growth in all the concentrations tested. Sesame seedlings grown in the presence of selligueain A showed smaller metaxylem cells when compared to the control, in the concentrations of 0.3 mM e 1 mM, with 50.82% inhibition in the greatest concentration and IC50 value of 0.98 mM. There was no activity of selligueain A against chlorophyll content of these seedlings. Analyses of extracts of soil collect under a P. arachnoideum patches pointed to the presence of selligueain A as major compound in soil solution, and, therefore, as a putative allelochemical produced by this plant. The concentration observed for this compound in the soil raged between 0.02 and 0.65 mM. According to allelopathic potential results, this concentration rage is sufficient to act over cooccurring plant species, promoting P. arachnoideum dominance. The presence of P. arachnoideum in Cerrado areas alters the chemical conditions of the soil, especially regarding N and Al, when compared to the presence of U. decumbens. Additionally, Al concentration is correlated to litter mass and to selligueain A concentration at the sites sampled. These results corroborates the hypothesis of allelopathy as a dominance mechanism of this plant in the areas where it occurs, with the first report of an allelochemical for a Pteridium species, by direct phytotoxic activity as well as by controlling Al concentration at those areas.
No Brasil, Pteridium arachnoideum (Kaulf.)

Mason, Shayne William. "The metabolomics of acute alcohol abuse / S.W. Mason." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/5034.

Full text
Abstract:
Alcohol is a substance used and abused by many individuals. The metabolic perturbations caused by excessive alcohol consumption are widespread throughout the human body. One of the primary consequences of alcohol abuse, particularly acute alcohol abuse, is very high levels of NADH formed from excessive ethanol oxidation. A high NADH:NAD+ ratio shifts the redox potential of the cells, shifting the normal physiological equilibrium, particularly within NAD-dependent dehydrogenase-catalyzed reactions. These particular reactions occur within various metabolic pathways, such as: citric acid cycle, glycolysis and branched-chain amino acid catabolism. As such, a disruptive effect within these metabolic pathways results in the slight accumulation of perturbation markers that can be associated with alcohol abuse. Isolation and identification of these widespread perturbation markers is difficult as they only occur in quantities only slightly higher than normal physiological values. Metabolomics makes for a very aptly used technique as it takes a holistic approach, taking into consideration the entire metabolic profile; and, with the aid of bioinformatics, is able to isolate and identify particular variables/metabolites of interest and accredit them as the variables responsible for the greatest variation between control and experimental groups. A novel approach used within this investigation effectively reduced the voluminous metabolomics data generated allowing for more efficient multivariate analysis. Application of three separate statistical models, namely: (1) Unfolding PCA, (2) Cross-sectional PCA, and (3) ANOVA Simultaneous Component Analysis (ASCA), were used for analyzing the complex 3-dimensional data set created within this acute alcohol abuse investigation. Each model presented certain strengths and difficulties. Taking into consideration the results from all 3 models, the first phase of this investigation confidently illustrates the differentiation between control cases and individuals administered an acute alcohol dose and, subsequently allow for variables responsible for this separation to be: identified as variables of importance, selected and categorized into specific pathways and, finally, labelled as perturbation markers. Through experimental observation it was noted that a large number of perturbation markers associated with the branched-chain amino acid pathway were present within the experimental cases. A hypothesis was created from this observation, re-enforcing the principle that metabolomics is a hypothesis-generating system. The subsequent second phase of this investigation involves a targeted experimental protocol aimed at evaluating the proposed hypothesis, with a focus on three secondary metabolites of the isoleucine catabolism pathway (ethylhydracrylic acid, tiglylglycine and 2-methyl-3hydroxybutyric acid). Results of this targeted approach show a definite perturbance, similar to a very minor inherited metabolic disorder, occurs within the isoleucine catabolism pathway in response to an acute alcohol dose. As to our knowledge, no information pertaining to the influences of acute alcohol abuse (or even chronic alcohol abuse) within the branched-chain amino acid pathway exists within the current literature, as of date. As such, the experimental observations presented and evaluated within this investigation provide a novel and more in-depth insight into the ethanol-induced perturbances within human metabolism.
Thesis (M.Sc. Abstract:
The present work investigates the often cited, but poorly supported, notion that Founding Father George Mason was a wealthy, slave-owning Virginian who vehemently opposed slavery. Utilizing Mason's state papers, letters, and other documents, as well as contemporaries' accounts of his speeches, this work will analyze those records' contextual construction, and it will deconstruct both Mason's written and spoken words and his actions and inactions relative to slavery. The goal of this effort is to determine whether Mason, who ostensibly played such an instrumental role in the development of the "rights" of Americans, and who remained a slaveholder—thereby trampling the rights of others—was truly opposed to slavery. Included in this work are chapters relating to the development of chattel slavery in the Tidewater, Virginia region from its inception and to the Mason family's mounting economic and political prominence, particularly the role of slaves in their attainment of that prominence. Two chapters analyze Mason's state papers, his writings on public matters, his public speeches, and other related material with a view towards determining their nexus with slavery and his role in their development. The final chapter focuses narrowly on Mason's personal relationship with slavery, and it includes both Mason's documents and his personal actions, with his documented actions concerning his own slaves meriting special attention. A portion of the chapter compares and contrasts Mason, Washington, and Jefferson on the matter of slave manumission. The argument is made that despite his consequential role in the development of some of America's revered founding documents, relative to his more prominent Virginia political peers, George Mason has garnered on rudimentary evaluation from the collective pens of more than two centuries of historians. Not only has Mason largely missed the genuine accolades befitting a Founding Father, some historians have simply ignored the contradictions of Mason's slave owning and his presumed abhorrence of slavery. Others have offered little more than a passing mention of Mason's slaveryrelated conundrum. Some have noted his slave-holding status, but then mistakenly considered anti-slavery and anti-slave trade as fungible positions and then proceeded to extol Mason's abhorrence of, and fight against, chattel slavery. Still others have claimed the institution was simply an unwelcome legacy entailed upon him. Mason, as an historical subject, stands under-reported, under-analyzed, often embellished, and generally carelessly considered. In spite of the effusive hyperbole of some Mason historians, this thesis argues Mason's apparently strong condemnations of the slave trade and of slavery were themselves strongly nuanced, and his actions (and, perhaps more importantly, his inactions) toward his own slaves run counter to the conclusive judgment of Mason as a slavery opponent. Nevertheless, Mason's statements and political actions—however tepid, and however nuanced—represent important work against the pernicious problem of slavery by a thoughtful, respected, and politically well-positioned Founding Father. This work will demonstrate Mason was likely neither the prescient anti-slavery advocate, as he is generally regarded among historians, nor fully a self-serving demagogue. Indeed, the definitive judgment of George Mason as a slave owning, Virginia planter, and Founding Father who served as a slavery opponent remains elusive.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the societal and technological influences on the modernization and design of the kitchen space between the years of 1890 and 1940. The development of the kitchen space is an important reflection of the conditions in which women worked and of women's role in the family. Examining the physical transformation of the kitchen space is the principal foundation on which to build a fundamental understanding of women's changing role in the home. The influences of advancing technology in home appliances and the advice of Home Economists were examined and weighed against each other as to their impact on the kitchen space. Transformation of the kitchen space began with the organization of tasks into work centers by Home Economists. Equipment and appliances were grouped together according to the task, such as cooking. Organization of work in the kitchen resulted in three distinct work areas centered around the sink, stove, and refrigerator. These principles of work organization were established by the end of the 1930's. It is at this time that advancements in appliance technology truly began to impact on the kitchen space. Affordability and acceptance of electricity as a "fuel" for kitchen appliances in the 1930's made electric stoves and refrigerators more appealing to the average household. Electric and gas appliances used "cooler" fuels which emitted less heat on the exterior. This property allowed these appliances to be built into cabinetry without danger of fire, a principle that had prevented the extensive use of built-in cabinetry prior to the 1930's.
Department of Architecture

Acosta-Lewis, Elizabeth Anne. "Institutional image: A case study of George Mason University." W&M ScholarWorks, 1989. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539618599.

Full text
Abstract:
During the past two decades, the image of higher education institutions, collectively and individually, has become more important as competition among colleges and universities for students, faculty, and resources has become more aggressive. In 1979 Mayhew asked whether it is possible for institutions that do not have well-established images to actually create them. This study addresses Mayhew's question by focusing on the concept of image at one institution, George Mason University.;This study examined both GMU's deliberate attempts to improve its image as well as the effects upon image of its inherent culture. Specifically, the two-part research question asked, first, how do GMU's efforts to improve its image compare and contrast to Topor's method of image-building outlined in Institutional Image (1986) and Marketing Higher Education (1983)? and second, to add a new perspective to image-making, how does GMU's "culture" as defined by Deal and Kennedy (1982) affect its image?;The study found that successful image-making at GMU involves the intimate nexus of both academic planning and marketing. GMU's president, George Johnson, keenly is aware of the importance of institutional image-making, and he strives to identify people, curricular programs, and projects that contribute to GMU's positive image. While GMU is striving to establish its own kind of culture, one of innovation, experimentation, and uniqueness, its culture differs from that described by Deal and Kennedy (1982) in that a strong sense of shared beliefs, values, and traditions is not prominent at GMU.;GMU is an example of an institution that, indeed is sucessfully creating an image that is attracting prominent faculty, better students, and increasing resources. The author believes, however, that more attention to building a stronger culture would provide a firmer foundation upon which to base GMU's image. Further study of the role of GMU's evolving culture would shed light on this question.

Smith, Samuel. "William Mason : nature and the English garden, 1750-1785." Thesis, University of York, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/8170/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a re-assessment of the life and works of a major but neglected eighteenth-century poet, Rev. William Mason. It focuses on his diverse engagements with nature as a philosophical concept and in its domestic form, the garden. Broadly conceived of, this dissertation argues for the centrality of Mason’s Anglicanism and Whig politics to his work as a playwright, poet, and garden designer. More specifically, it argues that Mason’s writings on nature during his early career (1750-1759) are statements of orthodox belief and conservative Whiggism, which seek to defend the religious and political establishment of mid-eighteenth century Britain. In his later work, particularly in his four-volume georgic poem entitled The English Garden (1772-1783), Mason continues to use nature as a vehicle through which to espouse Anglicanism and Whiggism. Yet his position with regards to the political establishment had changed and his work in this period criticizes the government and its handling of the American War. Alongside this narrative of continuity and change, three of Mason’s garden designs are analyzed for the manner in which they physically realize the theories of his written work. Throughout the thesis Mason is treated as a writer engaged in a wide range of eighteenth-century debates and involved in a series of networks. The multifariousness of his activities necessitates a multidisciplinary approach, drawing on English literature, art history, intellectual history, political history, religious history and garden history. Identifying and analyzing the importance of orthodox Anglican belief to Mason’s work, this thesis takes issue with the methodologies currently adopted in the academic discipline of garden history. Although strong on the political and social aspects of eighteenth-century gardening, religion is often overlooked in modern garden histories. This thesis rectifies this omission by simultaneously dealing with the philosophical, political and theological issues surrounding nature and gardening in the eighteenth century.

Abstract:
The thesis is a case-study in the shaping of a Tudor public figure. It examines the career of John Mason (1503-1566), a notable participant in mid-Tudor political life and diplomacy. Born the son of an obscure cowherd, he rose to become, by 1558, one of the richest officials in the royal household. A man who owed his success to his outstanding qualities of intellect, ambition and industry, he served the Crown in many different capacities and achieved prominence at home and abroad as civil servant, privy councillor, and ambassador. The thesis traces the stages by which he rose in the royal service: from clerk to the Council and envoy to the Elector Palatine under Henry VIII, to ambassador in France under Edward VI, ambassador to the Emperor Charles V and Philip II under Mary, and a leading privy councillor under Elizabeth. His performance in all these different roles is analysed and assessed, as is the influence he was able to exert on events during his career, and on statesmen, some of higher status than himself, such as his friends, Sir William Paget and Sir William Cecil. The thesis also seeks to show how, during such a turbulent period in English history, in spite of occasional setbacks, he was able to hold office, without interruption, under four Tudor monarchs and survive to retirement when many of his contemporaries lost their positions and some their lives.

Al-Bayatti, Ali Hilal. "Security management for mobile ad hoc network of networks (MANoN)." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/2417.

Full text
Abstract:
Mobile Ad hoc Network of Networks (MANoN) are a group of large autonomous wireless nodes communicating on a peer-to-peer basis in a heterogeneous environment with no pre-defined infrastructure. In fact, each node by itself is an ad hoc network with its own management. MANoNs are evolvable systems, which mean each ad hoc network has the ability to perform separately under its own policies and management without affecting the main system; therefore, new ad hoc networks can emerge and disconnect from the MANoN without conflicting with the policies of other networks. The unique characteristics of MANoN makes such networks highly vulnerable to security attacks compared with wired networks or even normal mobile ad hoc networks. This thesis presents a novel security-management system based upon the Recommendation ITU-T M.3400, which is used to evaluate, report on the behaviour of our MANoN and then support complex services our system might need to accomplish. Our security management will concentrate on three essential components: Security Administration, Prevention and Detection and Containment and Recovery. In any system, providing one of those components is a problem; consequently, dealing with an infrastructure-less MANoN will be a dilemma, yet we approached each set group of these essentials independently, providing unusual solutions for each one of them but concentrating mainly on the prevention and detection category. The contributions of this research are threefold. First, we defined MANoN Security Architecture based upon the ITU-T Recommendations: X.800 and X.805. This security architecture provides a comprehensive, end-to-end security solution for MANoN that could be applied to every wireless network that satisfies a similar scenario, using such networks in order to predict, detect and correct security vulnerabilities. The security architecture identifies the security requirements needed, their objectives and the means by which they could be applied to every part of the MANoN, taking into consideration the different security attacks it could face. Second, realising the prevention component by implementing some of the security requirements identified in the Security Architecture, such as authentication, authorisation, availability, data confidentiality, data integrity and non-repudiation has been proposed by means of defining a novel Security Access Control Mechanism based on Threshold Cryptography Digital Certificates in MANoN. Network Simulator (NS-2) is a real network environment simulator, which is used to test the performance of the proposed security mechanism and demonstrate its effectiveness. Our ACM-MANoN results provide a fully distributed security protocol that provides a high level of secure, available, scalable, flexible and efficient management services for MANoN. The third contribution is realising the detection component, which is represented by providing a Behavioural Detection Mechanism based on nodes behavioural observation engaged with policies. This behaviour mechanism will be used to detect malicious nodes acting to bring the system down. This approach has been validated using an attacks case study in an unknown military environment to cope with misbehaving nodes.

Abstract:
This essay, Photogenic - the invention of Brazil on Jean Manzon`s photography, has as its main focus the articulation of the images performated by the french photographer Jean Manzon, in the 1940`s, and the ideological project of the period. In this context we take into consideration Manzon`s experience in the european press in the 1930`s, moment when the photography interrupts its function of only illustrating the world, turning into a constructor of reality. In this path, the political context of the so called Estado Novo acquires relevance, in particular with its association with the press, by means, most of all, through the Departamento de Imprensa e Propaganda (DIP). Afterwards, this investigation focuses on Jean Manzon`s contribution for the illustrated magazine O Cruzeiro between 1943 and 1951. From a series of images, Manzon emerges as an agent of the national identity consolidation, producing a synthesis of Brazil, as a translation of the multiple existing ideas at that time.

Thompson, Tamara D. "The vocality of Sibyl Sanderson in Massenet's Manon and Esclarmonde." Thesis, Royal College of Music, 2016. http://researchonline.rcm.ac.uk/356/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how Sibyl Sanderson influenced Massenet's operas Manon and Esclarmonde from the perspective of vocality, in some cases resulting in the composer making changes to the score. Research and analysis includes the study of manuscripts, annotated scores, correspondence, memoirs, pedagogic treatises, reception history, and practice. From the opposite angle, it also attempts to identify the existence and extent of any effects that performing these roles had on Sanderson. By the time of her association with Massenet, Sibyl Sanderson was a successful, young stage performer; she became one of Massenet's primary collaborators. Documents relative to these operas suggest that the soprano's partnership with the composer could classify her not only as an interpreter, but also as a co-creator and re-creator of these roles, respectively. Massenet afforded her credit as co-author in Esclarmonde, by including her signature on the manuscript. Her impact on Manon is evidenced through comparison of the role as sung by Sanderson versus the vocal lines used by prior and later interpreters of the role. Manon underwent significant revisions because of Sanderson. The first changes were made for her 1888 début in Brussels, and include difficult melismatic passages, increased quantity and duration of high notes, and several other revisions. One contribution to knowledge within this thesis is discussion of a revision in the 1887 manuscript, which was not included in the 1895 Nouvelle Édition, and was not addressed in previous musicological discourse. There has been conjecture about the intended recipient of the 'Fabliau,' the third-act aria that Massenet wrote in 1894 to replace the 'Gavotte.' The aria premiered in 1898, sung by Georgette Bréjean-Gravière (later Bréjean-Silver). Present research has enhanced existing arguments that the aria was intended for the dedicatee, Mlle Bréjean-Gravière. Esclarmonde was written for Sanderson's voice to showcase her extraordinary high notes, virtuosic coloratura, and physical beauty. It could be considered one of the most demanding roles in opera, as evidenced by measured analyses within this thesis. Since she created the role, Esclarmonde has not achieved equivalent success. Through analysis of previously unexplored material, especially from the US, as well as by refuting some existing unsubstantiated claims, and by examining available sources from different perspectives, (such as quantified analyses of the roles), Sibyl Sanderson's influence on Manon and Esclarmonde has been confirmed and support of such belief enhanced.

Hans, Ariane. "Monika Maron und Jenny Erpenbeck : DDR im Zeichen der Moderne." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10575.

Full text
Abstract:
Literature by authors from the GDR has often been read with a focus on its sociopolitical context ‒ before and after the fall of the Wall. This rather one-dimensional approach has resulted in a lack of engagement with the more complex issues raised in many of those texts. Frequently, they address broader theoretical questions and delve into universal themes, which tend to be overlooked or sidelined. This PhD thesis concentrates on a selection of post-Wende texts by Monika Maron and Jenny Erpenbeck, two authors from the former East Germany. Starting from the premise that both authors' oeuvres serve on one level as critical investigations of the GDR and the significant aftermath of its collapse, I aim to demonstrate that these narratives have more to offer. My analysis brings to light the complexity of the examined works by addressing what it regards as their central themes: the exploration of questions around the topics of Heimat and memory. This research project draws attention to the texts' representation of underlying issues such as dislocation and fragmentation, and in doing so it examines how both authors depict concerns that go beyond the GDR and its demise. A key task is the analysis of the ways in which Monika Maron and Jenny Erpenbeck portray the symptoms of a wider ‘modern conditionʼ, a state characterized by instability and uncertainty. Based on the concept of ambivalence, introduced to the debates about modernity by Zygmunt Bauman in the early 1990s, this original comparative approach explores the failure and the ultimate collapse of the socialist utopia as a paradigm for the breakdown of the ‘grand narrativesʼ in modern, Western pluralist societies. Thus, this PhD thesis illuminates how both authors position themselves in relation to competing discourses about the GDR, and it simultaneously alerts the reader to the texts' inherent complexity by revealing their strong ties to topical issues regarding the much-debated term of modernity. Ultimately, I claim that Maron and Erpenbeck set out to investigate the impact of larger processes of fragmentation, and try to establish the possible role of and a ‘placeʼ for the individual that is exposed to historical forces and the rapid changes of spatio-temporal parameters within modernity, of which the GDR experience forms one part.

Abstract:
Filters having smallest size, high power handling capability, high Q factor, operating frequency up to several gigahertz’s (GHz) and low cost are the demand of the market to use in front end wireless/radio communication systems. In this regard several filter technologies have been introduced and utilized commercially. The increasing demand of such type of filters has opened a new challenge for filter designers. The purpose of this thesis is to design of a Tunable Bandpass Filter based on Barium Strontium Titanate (BSTO) Ferroelectric Film. A single Film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) is measured. MASON and Butterworth Van-Dyke (BVD) model are studied and implemented to reproduce the measurements. Simulations are performed by using the Advance Design System (ADS) by Agilent technologies. Simulations and measured data are used to exactly extract the physical and electrical parameters of a single FBAR. FBAR filter topologies are being studied and implemented. Ladder filter topology is selected to design the bandpass filter. The extracted physical and electrical parameters are used to investigate the performance of the filter. The area and the top electrode thickness of the series and shunt resonators are optimized to achieve the bandpass response with maximum out of band rejection, minimum insertion loss and sharper roll off near the pass band. A 3rd order T-type bandpass filter for 5GHz applications is designed. The insertion loss of -2.925 dB is achieved. The filter exhibits the 3dB bandwidth of 176 MHz and out of band rejection of -10 dB. DC bias of 0-25 V is used to analyze the tuning behavior of the filter. The electromagnetic co-simulation is also done in momentum to analyze the parasitic effects between the resonators. The results show the good agreement between the schematic and momentum simulation. Layout and masks are also designed on a 10*10 mm wafer that will be used later to fabricate the filter and further investigations.

Upton, Creon. "Narrating Sentiment in Mason & Dixon: A Modernist Novel of Feeling." Thesis, University of Canterbury. English, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/2591.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis approaches Thomas Pynchon's novel, Mason & Dixon, in terms of its narrative structure and sentimental content. Pynchon is generally regarded as a challenging and innovative writer, so narrative is an unsurprising subject for a study of his most recent work; sentimentalism, on the other hand, is a far cry from traditional approaches to his writing. Despite this, however, as I outline in my introduction, sentimentalism has long hovered around the edges of Pynchon's work. In Mason & Dixon it takes a privileged role as the dominating mood of the novel's final section, "Last Transit." This sentimentalism, far from being the retrogressive move that the term might imply, is bound up in a radically reconceived approach to the narrating voice of novelistic discourse, whence comes the unifying feature of my study. In Mason & Dixon, I identify this unity in the novel's referencing of film, long-established as one of Pynchon's major cultural influences. In my first chapter, I outline my approach to sentimentalism and narrative-in the modern and, specifically, modernist novel, as well as in contemporary film. In chapter two I outline my conception of Mason & Dixon's narrator as emulating film's visual representations; in chapter three, I explore this narrator as a "radically underdetermined" identity, who represents, not a linguistically embodied subjectivity, but rather representation as its own agent, as representation itself. In my fourth and final chapter, I examine how this narrator manages the sentimental content of the novel, concentrating on the character of Mason.

Abstract:
Mayan Volcano's eruption on 01 February 1814 is considered as the volcano's most violent eruption episode, devastating five towns in the southern slopes of the volcano and killing at least 1,200 people. The deposits of the 1814 eruption are mainly distributed on the southern slopes of the volcano. The primary volcanic succession consists of, from bottom to top, tephra fall deposit, lower ignimbrite, pyroclastic surge deposit and upper ignimbrite. Two post-eruption lahar units were also recognized in the field area. The tephra fall unit, although not observed in direct contact with any of the other primary deposits, was distinguished based on petrologic and geochemical similarities with the lower ignimbrite and pyroclastic surge deposit. The lower ignimbrite and the overlying pyroclastic surge deposit are both scoriaceous, and are similarly bombs-rich; the surge deposit is distinguished by its characteristically good sorting. In contrast, the upper ignimbrite contains abundant angular altered clasts derived from pre-eruption deposits. All the primary deposits are interpreted to have been derived from an eruption column that was generated by multiple explosive eruptions occurring in close succession. This column initially generated the tephra fall. Discrete phases of column collapse produced the succession of lower ignimbrite, pyroclastic surge deposit and upper ignimbrite. The wide dispersal, composition and textural characteristics of the pyroclastic surge indicate that it was generated by a discrete phase of an eruption column collapse. The upper ignimbrite is the deposit from a density current produced during the cessation of the eruption that was accompanied by partial collapse of the crater wall. The 1814 deposits are predominantly composed of basaltic andesite, with minor more acidic andesite. Petrographic texture and contact relationships, bimodal distribution of plagioclase, and variation in glass composition indicate mixing of two magmas. A geologic model for the 1814 eruption is proposed in which an intermediate andesite magma residing in a small, shallow chamber beneath Mayan was intruded by a comparably larger magma of basaltic andesite composition. The resulting magma mixing may have triggered the explosive eruption of 1814.

Abstract:

In Mason & Dixon, Thomas Pynchon paradoxically attempts to represent America through the most unbelievable and anachronistic figures. Mediation there need be between the text and the world. The first two parts of the work consider two mediating texts, that of the dictionary, with which the novel entertains ambivalent relations, then that of the encyclopedia, and more specifically of the historical and scientific discourses therein. After this approach of the extraordinary complexity of Pynchon's prose, the third part tackles what is at the heart of the text, that place where out of words figures emerge, and where figures show themselves to be the stuff language is made of. The fourth part concentrates on representation in the novel, on the way it turns space inside out, and the work as a whole attempts to point to the thin veil on which the dance of text and world takes place. To point to it, not behind, because there is nothing behind the veil

Smith, James Carroll. "Charlotte Mason: An Introductory Analysis of Her Educational Theories and Practices." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27029.

Abstract:
This study has two goals. One is to begin to explicate the educational theories and practices of Charlotte Mason and the other is to determine whether or not her educational theories and practices are still useful in a 21st Century American School. The first goal is addressed in six essays that discuss major educational tenets of Mason’ s educational philosophy. The second goal is studied through a case study on The Children’s Community School. The six essays based on major tenets of Mason’s educational theories and practices begin with the principle, â children are born persons,â which permeates all of her beliefs about teaching and learning. â Children are born persons' means that children change from within and not from without and, therefore, are discoverers of knowledge not vessels to be filled. Rousseau believed that children come with a good nature, but Mason contended that they come with a nature that is both good and evil, as all humans. Therefore children need to be educated to attenuate the evil nature. That is the second tenet. The third tenet is a discussion of authority and docility. If children have a good and evil nature then authority is necessary. However, since children are persons, they have a right to an education and they have a right to self-authority. The fourth essay discusses Mason’s beliefs about the sacredness of a child’s personality. In the fifth essay on pedagogy the discussion is concentrated on Mason’ s use of narration as an instructional tool. The last essay is on curriculum and includes a discussion of Mason’s views on curriculum and the use of the narrative in the curriculum. All of the essays bring to the discussion the thinking of other educational thinkers both past and present. At the end of each essay is the story of the implementation of Mason’s educational theories and practices at The Children’s Community School. The data collection for this case study is defined by Mason’s educational principles discussed in each essay. Data were collected on site at the school through observations, interviews and documents. All interviews were transcribed. Data from transcriptions, observations, and documents were then coded by the six major tenets discussed in the essays. Connections were examined between the theory of Mason and the practice in The Children’s Community School.
Ed. D.

Abstract:

Maroon communities are often portrayed as renegade groups of Africans living within or on the fringes of some of the more popular slave societies such as Jamaica, Saint-Domingue (Haiti), Suriname, or Brazil, whose purpose or goals in their existence was never to strive towards universal emancipation of the African lot, and whose resistance and radicalism, if occurring during the Age of Revolution (i.e. Haiti), is often attributed to European influences during that era. This socio-cultural and political history about a lesser known group of maroons in Dominica challenges the preconceived notions of African maroonage and resistance, and is original in four ways: One, this dissertation demonstrates that the maroons of Dominica who lived in the interior of the island worked with the enslaved population on plantations on several occasions to overthrow the British colonial government in an attempt to assist their African brethren in freedom; Secondly, this work highlights the African origins of the spiritual and political philosophies, particularly the lesser credited Igbo, who comprised of a significant portion of Africans in Dominica, are what guided their anti-slavery and anti-colonial resistance; Thirdly, the maroons and enslaved populations, who demonstrated alliances with one another in Dominica during the 1790s and early nineteenth century were not influenced by French Revolutionary ideals, but were pursued for an alliance, and the former, in particular, often rejected alliances with French Revolutionary sympathizers; Lastly, this dissertation takes the maroons of Dominica outside the confines of a national history and connects it to the greater African Diaspora.
