Abstract:
We evaluated the results of endovascular management of patients with mid-basilar artery aneurysm (mBAA). During a seven year period, 14 patients (mean age 39.6 years, male/female ratio 1:1) with mBAA were treated with endovascular techniques at our institute. Pretreatment clinical grades were determined using the Hunt-Hess scale. Outcome was evaluated using the Glasgow Outcome Scale scores (GOS) during a mean follow-up period of 15.6 months (range, three to 70 months). Fourteen patients with 15 mBAAs were treated endovascularly. Four (28.6%) patients died of rebleeding within one day after embolization. In ten mBAAs, immediate postprocedural angiograms showed that complete occlusion was achieved, subtotal occlusion in one, and incomplete occlusion in four. Follow-up angiographic results in ten patients confirmed complete occlusion of 11 aneurysms. Long-term outcome was good (GOS Score 4 or 5) in ten patients (71.4%) and fatal (GOS Score 1) in four (28.6%). Favorable overall long-term outcome can be achieved in 78.6% patients with mBAAs. Endovascular management of mBAAs is an effective treatment in the long-term. In our experience, the natural history of mBAAs is dismal.

Abstract:
Rapid advancements in the infrastructure of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have led to radically new but ubiquitous technology; cloud computing. Cloud computing has gracefully emerged offering services that possess on-demand scalability, huge computing power, and a utility-like availability, all at a relatively low cost. It has unsurprisingly become a paradigm shift in ICT, gaining adoptions in all forms of application i.e., personal, academic, business, or government. Not only for its cost-effectiveness but also for its inherent ability to meet business goals and provide strategic ICT resources. More recently there have been advances in cloud computing leading to the evolution of newer commercial cloud services, one of which is the Mobile backend as a Service (MBaaS). The MBaaS is important and required for a robust mobile application back-end data storage and management. Its wide adoption and importance stem from its ability to simplify application development and deployment. Also, MBaaS is robust, with the ability to cope with errors by providing nifty tools and other features. These enable rapid scaffolding of mobile applications. This paper reviews Mobile backend as a Service (MBaaS) and provides required background knowledge on some cloud services and their providers to enable stakeholders to make informed decisions and appropriate choices.

Abstract:
The ever-increasing complexity of cyber-physical systems is driving the need for assurance of critical infrastructure and embedded systems. However, traditional methods to secure cyber-physical systems—e.g., using cyber best practices, adapting mechanisms from information technology systems, and penetration testing followed by patching—are becoming ineffective. This paper describes, in detail, Verification Evidence and Resilient Design In anticipation of Cybersecurity Threats (VERDICT), a language and framework to address cyber resiliency. When we use the term resiliency, we mean hardening a system such that it anticipates and withstands attacks. VERDICT analyzes a system in the face of cyber threats and recommends design improvements that can be applied early in the system engineering process. This is done in two steps: (1) Analyzing at the system architectural level, with respect to cyber and safety requirements and (2) by analyzing at the component behavioral level, with respect to a set of cyber-resiliency properties. The framework consists of three parts: (1) Model-Based Architectural Analysis and Synthesis (MBAAS); (2) Assurance Case Fragments Generation (ACFG); and (3) Cyber Resiliency Verifier (CRV). The VERDICT language is an Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) annex for modeling the safety and security aspects of a system’s architecture. MBAAS performs probabilistic analyses, suggests defenses to mitigate attacks, and generates attack-defense trees and fault trees as evidence of resiliency and safety. It can also synthesize optimal defense solutions—with respect to implementation costs. In addition, ACFG assembles MBAAS evidence into goal structuring notation for certification purposes. CRV analyzes behavioral aspects of the system (i.e., the design model)—modeled using the Assume-Guarantee Reasoning Environment (AGREE) annex and checked against cyber resiliency properties using the Kind 2 model checker. When a property is proved or disproved, a minimal set of vital system components responsible for the proof/disproof are identified. CRV also provides rich and localized diagnostics so the user can quickly identify problems and fix the design model. This paper describes the VERDICT language and each part of the framework in detail and includes a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of VERDICT—in this case, a delivery drone.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Burkholderia pseudomallei is a gram-negative facultative intracellular pathogen that causes melioidosis, an invasive disease of humans and animals. To address the response of this bacterium to iron-limiting conditions, we first performed a global transcriptional analysis of RNA extracted from bacteria grown under iron-limiting and iron-rich conditions by microarrays. We focused our study on those open reading frames (ORFs) induced under iron limitation, which encoded predicted proteins that could be involved in the biosynthesis and uptake of the siderophore malleobactin. We purified this siderophore and determined that it consisted of at least three compounds with different molecular weights. We demonstrated that ORFs BPSL1776 and BPSL1774, designated mbaA and mbaF, respectively, are involved in the biosynthesis of malleobactin, while BPSL1775, named fmtA, is involved in its transport. These genes are in an operon with two other ORFs (mbaJ and mbaI) whose transcription is under the control of MbaS, a protein that belongs to the extracytoplasmic function sigma factors. Interestingly, the transcription of the mbaA, fmtA, and mbaS genes is not controlled by the availability of the siderophore malleobactin.

Abstract:
Emerging Medical Body Area Networks (MBANs) require new, protected spectrum for clinical applications. This may mean uncoordinated and autonomous operation of multiple MBANs, within the new candidate bands. The question is that how will MBANs coexist as a secondary service with other radio systems? Clinical environment requires balance of robust and efficient wireless techniques to enable coexistence of MBANs and other radio devices where low transmission power MBANs as secondary systems may be vulnerable to interference from incumbent devices transceivers. Physical separation between the MBANs and incumbent radio devices and avoiding the transmission in the same frequency bands among the wireless techniques may be considered. In this paper, we propose interferencemanagement techniques considering such coexistencebetween the MBANs and other radio systems and deal withthe issue of co-existence with primary systems by proposing novel methods for a gateway-to-gateway coordination, to assist the methods described in the first and second part of this paper. Result is improved reliability and Quality of Service for MBANs. These would lead to multiple clinical benefits, including better patient mobility, more monitoring flexibility and extension of monitoring into care areas that are currently unmonitored. Reduced clinical errors and reduced overall monitoring costs are other results.

Abstract:
Polymeric nanoparticle suspension is a newly developed oil-displacing agent for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in low-permeability reservoirs. In this work, SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) polymeric nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a simple distillation–precipitation polymerization method. Due to the introduction of polymer, the SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) nanoparticles show a favorable swelling performance in aqueous solution, and their particle sizes increase from 631 to 1258 nm as the swelling times increase from 24 to 120 h. The apparent viscosity of SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) suspension increases with an increase of mass concentration and swelling time, whereas it decreases as the salinity and temperature increase. The SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) suspension behaves like a non-Newtonian fluid at lower shear rates, yet like a Newtonian fluid at shear rates greater than 300 s−1. The EOR tests of the SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) suspension in heterogeneous, low-permeability cores show that SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) nanoparticles can effectively improve the sweep efficiency and recover more residual oils. A high permeability ratio can result in a high incremental oil recovery in parallel cores. With an increase of the permeability ratio of parallel cores from 1.40 to 15.49, the ratios of incremental oil recoveries (low permeability/high permeability) change from 7.69/4.61 to 23.61/8.46. This work demonstrates that this SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) suspension is an excellent conformance control agent for EOR in heterogeneous, low-permeability reservoirs. The findings of this study can help to further the understanding of the mechanisms of EOR using SiO2/P(MBAAm-co-AM) suspension in heterogeneous, low-permeability reservoirs.

Abstract:

The mobile computer restrictions propose new ways to use cloud computing resources aimed at mobile devices, this is the Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) primary goal. Issues such as storage and processing can impact the service availability on the mobile device. With the reducing purpose, these questions are its possible divide the application into two pieces, frontend, and backend. The cloud services assist this process with the Mobile Backend-as-a- Service (MBaaS) use. This tool allows the developers connect yours application backend to cloud storage. The MBaaS OpenMobster platform offers complete synchronization service to mobile applications. Since the data stored on mobile was synchronized distributed data center, the server’s system availability is an essential attribute and request attention, because computer systems will sometimes fail. The failures can happen on components variety as hardware, software and connections, causing financial losses and reliability compromising of the companies, which offer this services. The administrators need tools to project the system availability, with this they can define the SLA with more assurance. Analytic models can be used to availability evaluate in this environment and mitigate the downtime risk, this improves the service availability. This work primary goal is proposed analytic models to availability evaluated in these environments. It was adopted a methodology as follow: First, define the base service architecture. It was modeled by use a hierarchical model, using a reliability block diagram (RBD) and continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC). The validation considers a fault injection testbed and repairs on real environment. Considering the model proposed, it was done sensitivity analysis, these results present the system as a critical component. This analysis was proposed hierarchical models to represents cloud environment. On these sensibility analysis, a background was offered four scenarios. The scenarios were evaluated to determine the availability and annual downtime. The results show that the an automatic recovery implementation process on the software component, Java Virtual Machine, decrease the annual downtime on base architecture to 10%. The results present the availability improvement when adopted redundancy strategy as warm standby on a cloud environment. This way, the work can guide the MBaaS system administrators in planning their maintenance policies.

Abstract:
Since Woodrow Wilson’s seminal essay "The Study of Administration,” when he called for educating administrators in administration in hopes of making government more business-like, scholars have been investigating the differences and similarities between government and business. Largely ignored was the education for administration; should it likewise be more focused on business? Despite the development of specialized public administration degrees, the Master of Public Administration (MPA) and its equivalents, many managers trained in business schools are employed in federal government. This, alone, should make one question whether or not graduate education in public administration is truly any better or more appropriate for public sector management careers than other graduate degrees, notably the MBA. The present study addresses the issue of degree appropriateness by comparing federal sector managers who are MPA-trained with those who are MBA-trained on ten career success indices. Data to construct the indices were collected via a mailed survey questionnaire sent to the population of federal sector managers holding the MPA or MBA from selected universities. A variety of statistical procedures in SPSS were used to analyze the data. Analysis of the data indicates that few significant differences exist between MPA's and MBA's in career success, as measured in the short term. Possible explanations for these findings are explored. A cohort analysis and t-Test indicates that MBA's receive higher starting salaries than MPA's but MPA's surpass their MBA peers approximately twelve years after completing the master's degree. A hypothetical fourth (older) cohort of MPA's would be significantly higher paid now than MBA's. Implications for individuals, institutions, and society, based on the findings, were discussed, along with limitations to the study and future topics of research.

Fotopoulou, Dialechti. "The impact of foreign higher education on management practices : the case of MBAs in Greece." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6368/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the impact of the proliferation of MBA degrees on managerial practice, looking at the case of Greece. Originating in the United States, MBA degrees provide generic management education, in line with the emphasis on tertiary generic skills encountered in Liberal Market Economies (LMEs). More specifically, this study evaluates whether MBAs offered in Greece are broad replicas of those encountered in LMEs, or whether they have very distinct features, mirroring their social context and the specific sectoral composition of the Greek economy. Moreover, by acknowledging the role of individual action in promoting change at firm level as well as the impact of managerial education on practice, the study further explores whether Greek MBA graduates can be considered evangelists for the LME model. In order to address these research aims, the current study uses a multi-method approach including both qualitative and quantitative methods. These involve a documentary analysis of MBA programmes’ curricula offered both by public and private Greek universities, semi-structured in-depth interviews with academics teaching in the MBAs, and finally a questionnaire survey of Greek MBA graduates working as managers in Greece. At a theoretical level, the study gives evidence on how changes in the nature of higher education may shed some light on the main dynamics of broader institutional change. At an applied level, the study finds that the main impact of the MBA degree on practice has been in terms of broad content, and a lack of rootedness of MBAs in specific technologies, industries and processes. Hence, the study finds that Greek MBAs have many similarities with the traditional LME type MBA, the most significant being the promotion of general management as opposed to industry specific knowledge. The broad management curricula of the Greek MBA represent a significant movement away from the traditional approach of specialized degrees and professions, towards general management. Thus, there is a tendency to the generic, which is conducive to engendering a world view closely aligned to the shareholder model of LMEs. The latter is primarily concerned with viewing the firm instrumental terms as a vehicle for the generation of shareholder value, rather than something with distinct industry and regional specific characteristics to be nurtured for the benefit, not only of owners, but for stakeholders as well. This in turn may contribute to broader socio-economic change in Greece.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the transferability of Western MBAs to the Chinese management education context and the associated challenges of teaching across cultures. Fundamentally, it raises the question of acceptance of the Western MBA model in the Chinese context. The methodology included focus group discussions and questionnaire survey, both carried out with MBA candidates in two particular institutions in China. Narrative and numerical data are integrated to present the research findings. The findings suggest that the context is the most significant factor in terms of developing the practice of MBA education in China. The programme itself is overly theoretical and without enough local practices and cases. The teacher-centred approach is still dominant in MBA teaching there with little student interaction. This is linked to students' underlying Chinese cultural values and the Confucian learning style, but also reflects the lack of practical experience of both the teacher and students. Additionally, the findings from this research also highlight Chinese MBA students' preferences for group-oriented teaching methods and raise the problematic interpretation and application of Western pedagogy and teaching methods that can arise, when transferred to the Chinese context. This research provides a comprehensive literature review of the development of MBA education in China, and a greater understanding of the current position of MBA education there. It also provides better understanding of Chinese culture and learning style, and the impact of these on people's preferences towards teaching methods. Overall, the findings from this research have added to a growing body of literature on the impact of local culture on the delivery of Western educational programmes in non-Western countries.

Abstract:
Anionic surfactants are wildly used in many industrial and household applications. Because anionic surfactants are used so widely, significant attention has focused on the removal of these contaminants from wastewater. Among various treatment techniques, biofiltration, such as trickling filter technologies, has been employed in many wastewater treatment plants (WWPTs) to remove anionic surfactants. However, current knowledge of the efficacy of trickling filter to remove anionic surfactants from wastewaters is limited. The present study characterized the performance of a high rate (i.e. roughing) trickling filter to remove anionic surfactants both at lab-scale and pilot-scale. Lab-scale tests investigated the biodegradation of anionic surfactants under controllable conditions were compared with those from previous studies by others. Pilot-scale tests investigated the efficacy of a trickling filter at removing anionic surfactants from a wastewater over an extended period of time. The data from the pilot-scale tests were used to model the performance of trickling filter at removing anionic surfactants from the wastewater, using first order and modified Velz models. The lab-scale tests indicated that high molecular weight anionic surfactants degrade faster than the low molecular weight surfactants. The biodegradation rates observed in the present study were similar to those from pervious studies by others. The pilot-scale tests indicated that roughing trickling filter could remove 11% to 29% of anionic surfactants and 4% to 22% of COD from the wastewater. Higher molecular weight anionic surfactants were more degradable. The experimental data could be accurately modeled using the modified Velz model (R² value more than 0.9). The degradation rates of modified Velz model for total anionic surfactants, high molecular weight anionic surfactants and COD were 0.053±0.0057, 0.088±0.0048 and 0.119±0.0111 (mIs)0.5 respectively. The pilot-scale test results indicated that a high rate (i.e., roughing) trickling filter was not capable of effectively removing anionic surfactants in the primary effluent at Lions Gate WWTP because a relatively large trickling filter area would be required to achieve the required surfactant removal efficiency.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project is about MBA students' behaviour in a MBA project and investigates what goes on when groups are solving problems or making decisions in work-related contexts. In contrast with most mainstream approaches to study groups, which assume the impartiality of both participants and researcher, the study considers' that human beings are active makers of meanings and interpretations, and participants in the construction of narrative versions of group life. Thus, the research clearly puts emphasis on construction rather than pure discovery, on participation rather than observation, on beliefs rather than truths. This thesis questions whether the elusive concept 'workgroup' can be described as the integration of single, widely spanning set of meanings, by exploring how group members both construct and are constructed in particular circumstances. It also investigates misunderstandings in interaction, as meanings which speakers express in words or behaviours may not be those which addressees interpret. To offer a trustworthy answer to the research questions pointed out, the project starts by examining some historically situated theories, models and perspectives that shape our understanding of groups in organisations and how managers should assist the individual or small group when people experience tensions, conflicts and struggles in group constellations. Following an opportunistic sampling, the empirical investigation is carried on with a cohort of MBA students in a Business School of a UK university. In the process of gathering and reporting the empirical material, the main objective is to attain understanding about participants' subjective experiences in one particular groupbased activity: a real-life consultancy project where the researcher was able to follow and observe nineteen groups over a period of six months. A total of 58 open-ended interviews with students constitute the main source of data for the project. The study presents evidence showing different perceptions of 'group work' and the implications that these differences had on group dynamics and members' identities within their group, but more importantly on individual understandings of what was going on in their groups. The findings contribute to reveal gaps in psycho-social theories, specifically with regard to multicultural group-based work structures. Findings also make a practical contribution, providing some insights to tutors and senior executives who wish to enhance the use of group work as a strategy for improving the awareness of one's own behaviour, sensitivity to the behaviour of others and group consciousness.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the concept of multi-beam antenna (MBA) in mobile ad hoc networks and the recent advances in the research relevant to this topic. MBAs have been proposed to achieve concurrent communications with multiple neighboring nodes while they inherit the advantages of directional antennas, such as the high directivity and antenna gain. MBAs can be implemented in the forms of multiple fixed-beam directional antennas (MFBAs) and multi-channel smart antennas (MCSAs). The former either uses multiple predefined beams or selects multiple directional antennas and thus is relatively simple; the latter uses smart antenna techniques to dynamically form multiple adaptive beams and thereby provides more robust communication links to the neighboring nodes. The emphases of this chapter lie in the offerings and implementation techniques of MBAs, random-access scheduling for the contention resolution, effect of multipath propagation, and node throughput evaluation.

Abstract:
Metal Big Area Additive Manufacturing (mBAAM) is a promising approach to large-scale metal additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing. The mBAAM system uses an arc-based wire-fed welding robot to build metal parts. A multi-degree-of-freedom robotic arm is known for its extensive range of motion and reliable tool handling. Attaching a torch end-effector to a robotic arm gives it welding capabilities; however, this decreases the motion range and dynamics of the robot. As a result, build volume and printing accuracy are decreased. Additionally, only a portion of time is spent printing in an arc-based process. Maintenance leads to downtime on the system. In a tungsten inert gas (TIG)-based process, the torch electrode wears out over time and must be changed to avoid defective deposition. This paper proposes an approach for a compact torch end-effector to improve the robot’s build volume. This paper also proposes an approach to reducing non-printing process time by designing and implementing a semi-automated electrode changing system.

Abstract:
This paper looks at the development of Electronic Commerce specialisations in an MBA program, and particularly at a recent specialisation developed at Victoria University, Australia for its local and overseas MBA students. These MBA specialisations are very popular in Australia, and half of the MBA programs with specialisations have one in an e-Commerce related field. An examination of some of these specialisations highlighted in the literature, or in Australian universities, shows that the two most popular topics in them are e-Marketing, the management of e-Commerce in business and e-Commerce business models. Victoria University has recently introduced an e-Commerce specialisation that targets these areas, as well as other popular uses of Internet technologies in business and the development of e-Commerce web sites. This specialisation is explained in the paper, along with the different modes ol the specialisation delivered at Victoria University campuses in Melbourne, Singapore and Beijing.
