Abstract:

The mobile computer restrictions propose new ways to use cloud computing resources aimed at mobile devices, this is the Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) primary goal. Issues such as storage and processing can impact the service availability on the mobile device. With the reducing purpose, these questions are its possible divide the application into two pieces, frontend, and backend. The cloud services assist this process with the Mobile Backend-as-a- Service (MBaaS) use. This tool allows the developers connect yours application backend to cloud storage. The MBaaS OpenMobster platform offers complete synchronization service to mobile applications. Since the data stored on mobile was synchronized distributed data center, the server’s system availability is an essential attribute and request attention, because computer systems will sometimes fail. The failures can happen on components variety as hardware, software and connections, causing financial losses and reliability compromising of the companies, which offer this services. The administrators need tools to project the system availability, with this they can define the SLA with more assurance. Analytic models can be used to availability evaluate in this environment and mitigate the downtime risk, this improves the service availability. This work primary goal is proposed analytic models to availability evaluated in these environments. It was adopted a methodology as follow: First, define the base service architecture. It was modeled by use a hierarchical model, using a reliability block diagram (RBD) and continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC). The validation considers a fault injection testbed and repairs on real environment. Considering the model proposed, it was done sensitivity analysis, these results present the system as a critical component. This analysis was proposed hierarchical models to represents cloud environment. On these sensibility analysis, a background was offered four scenarios. The scenarios were evaluated to determine the availability and annual downtime. The results show that the an automatic recovery implementation process on the software component, Java Virtual Machine, decrease the annual downtime on base architecture to 10%. The results present the availability improvement when adopted redundancy strategy as warm standby on a cloud environment. This way, the work can guide the MBaaS system administrators in planning their maintenance policies.

Banks, McRae C. "Degrees of success?: MPA's and MBA's from elite universities and career success in the federal government." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/76504.

Full text
Abstract:
Since Woodrow Wilson’s seminal essay "The Study of Administration,” when he called for educating administrators in administration in hopes of making government more business-like, scholars have been investigating the differences and similarities between government and business. Largely ignored was the education for administration; should it likewise be more focused on business? Despite the development of specialized public administration degrees, the Master of Public Administration (MPA) and its equivalents, many managers trained in business schools are employed in federal government. This, alone, should make one question whether or not graduate education in public administration is truly any better or more appropriate for public sector management careers than other graduate degrees, notably the MBA. The present study addresses the issue of degree appropriateness by comparing federal sector managers who are MPA-trained with those who are MBA-trained on ten career success indices. Data to construct the indices were collected via a mailed survey questionnaire sent to the population of federal sector managers holding the MPA or MBA from selected universities. A variety of statistical procedures in SPSS were used to analyze the data. Analysis of the data indicates that few significant differences exist between MPA's and MBA's in career success, as measured in the short term. Possible explanations for these findings are explored. A cohort analysis and t-Test indicates that MBA's receive higher starting salaries than MPA's but MPA's surpass their MBA peers approximately twelve years after completing the master's degree. A hypothetical fourth (older) cohort of MPA's would be significantly higher paid now than MBA's. Implications for individuals, institutions, and society, based on the findings, were discussed, along with limitations to the study and future topics of research.

Fotopoulou, Dialechti. "The impact of foreign higher education on management practices : the case of MBAs in Greece." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6368/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the impact of the proliferation of MBA degrees on managerial practice, looking at the case of Greece. Originating in the United States, MBA degrees provide generic management education, in line with the emphasis on tertiary generic skills encountered in Liberal Market Economies (LMEs). More specifically, this study evaluates whether MBAs offered in Greece are broad replicas of those encountered in LMEs, or whether they have very distinct features, mirroring their social context and the specific sectoral composition of the Greek economy. Moreover, by acknowledging the role of individual action in promoting change at firm level as well as the impact of managerial education on practice, the study further explores whether Greek MBA graduates can be considered evangelists for the LME model. In order to address these research aims, the current study uses a multi-method approach including both qualitative and quantitative methods. These involve a documentary analysis of MBA programmes’ curricula offered both by public and private Greek universities, semi-structured in-depth interviews with academics teaching in the MBAs, and finally a questionnaire survey of Greek MBA graduates working as managers in Greece. At a theoretical level, the study gives evidence on how changes in the nature of higher education may shed some light on the main dynamics of broader institutional change. At an applied level, the study finds that the main impact of the MBA degree on practice has been in terms of broad content, and a lack of rootedness of MBAs in specific technologies, industries and processes. Hence, the study finds that Greek MBAs have many similarities with the traditional LME type MBA, the most significant being the promotion of general management as opposed to industry specific knowledge. The broad management curricula of the Greek MBA represent a significant movement away from the traditional approach of specialized degrees and professions, towards general management. Thus, there is a tendency to the generic, which is conducive to engendering a world view closely aligned to the shareholder model of LMEs. The latter is primarily concerned with viewing the firm instrumental terms as a vehicle for the generation of shareholder value, rather than something with distinct industry and regional specific characteristics to be nurtured for the benefit, not only of owners, but for stakeholders as well. This in turn may contribute to broader socio-economic change in Greece.

Wang, Wenting. "The transferability of western MBAs to the Chinese context : exploring the challenges of teaching across cultures." Thesis, Middlesex University, 2011. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/7730/.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the transferability of Western MBAs to the Chinese management education context and the associated challenges of teaching across cultures. Fundamentally, it raises the question of acceptance of the Western MBA model in the Chinese context. The methodology included focus group discussions and questionnaire survey, both carried out with MBA candidates in two particular institutions in China. Narrative and numerical data are integrated to present the research findings. The findings suggest that the context is the most significant factor in terms of developing the practice of MBA education in China. The programme itself is overly theoretical and without enough local practices and cases. The teacher-centred approach is still dominant in MBA teaching there with little student interaction. This is linked to students' underlying Chinese cultural values and the Confucian learning style, but also reflects the lack of practical experience of both the teacher and students. Additionally, the findings from this research also highlight Chinese MBA students' preferences for group-oriented teaching methods and raise the problematic interpretation and application of Western pedagogy and teaching methods that can arise, when transferred to the Chinese context. This research provides a comprehensive literature review of the development of MBA education in China, and a greater understanding of the current position of MBA education there. It also provides better understanding of Chinese culture and learning style, and the impact of these on people's preferences towards teaching methods. Overall, the findings from this research have added to a growing body of literature on the impact of local culture on the delivery of Western educational programmes in non-Western countries.

Guo, Feng. "Pilot-scale study of removal of anionic surfactants with trickling filter." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/4080.

Full text
Abstract:
Anionic surfactants are wildly used in many industrial and household applications. Because anionic surfactants are used so widely, significant attention has focused on the removal of these contaminants from wastewater. Among various treatment techniques, biofiltration, such as trickling filter technologies, has been employed in many wastewater treatment plants (WWPTs) to remove anionic surfactants. However, current knowledge of the efficacy of trickling filter to remove anionic surfactants from wastewaters is limited. The present study characterized the performance of a high rate (i.e. roughing) trickling filter to remove anionic surfactants both at lab-scale and pilot-scale. Lab-scale tests investigated the biodegradation of anionic surfactants under controllable conditions were compared with those from previous studies by others. Pilot-scale tests investigated the efficacy of a trickling filter at removing anionic surfactants from a wastewater over an extended period of time. The data from the pilot-scale tests were used to model the performance of trickling filter at removing anionic surfactants from the wastewater, using first order and modified Velz models. The lab-scale tests indicated that high molecular weight anionic surfactants degrade faster than the low molecular weight surfactants. The biodegradation rates observed in the present study were similar to those from pervious studies by others. The pilot-scale tests indicated that roughing trickling filter could remove 11% to 29% of anionic surfactants and 4% to 22% of COD from the wastewater. Higher molecular weight anionic surfactants were more degradable. The experimental data could be accurately modeled using the modified Velz model (R² value more than 0.9). The degradation rates of modified Velz model for total anionic surfactants, high molecular weight anionic surfactants and COD were 0.053±0.0057, 0.088±0.0048 and 0.119±0.0111 (mIs)0.5 respectively. The pilot-scale test results indicated that a high rate (i.e., roughing) trickling filter was not capable of effectively removing anionic surfactants in the primary effluent at Lions Gate WWTP because a relatively large trickling filter area would be required to achieve the required surfactant removal efficiency.

Abstract:
This research project is about MBA students' behaviour in a MBA project and investigates what goes on when groups are solving problems or making decisions in work-related contexts. In contrast with most mainstream approaches to study groups, which assume the impartiality of both participants and researcher, the study considers' that human beings are active makers of meanings and interpretations, and participants in the construction of narrative versions of group life. Thus, the research clearly puts emphasis on construction rather than pure discovery, on participation rather than observation, on beliefs rather than truths. This thesis questions whether the elusive concept 'workgroup' can be described as the integration of single, widely spanning set of meanings, by exploring how group members both construct and are constructed in particular circumstances. It also investigates misunderstandings in interaction, as meanings which speakers express in words or behaviours may not be those which addressees interpret. To offer a trustworthy answer to the research questions pointed out, the project starts by examining some historically situated theories, models and perspectives that shape our understanding of groups in organisations and how managers should assist the individual or small group when people experience tensions, conflicts and struggles in group constellations. Following an opportunistic sampling, the empirical investigation is carried on with a cohort of MBA students in a Business School of a UK university. In the process of gathering and reporting the empirical material, the main objective is to attain understanding about participants' subjective experiences in one particular groupbased activity: a real-life consultancy project where the researcher was able to follow and observe nineteen groups over a period of six months. A total of 58 open-ended interviews with students constitute the main source of data for the project. The study presents evidence showing different perceptions of 'group work' and the implications that these differences had on group dynamics and members' identities within their group, but more importantly on individual understandings of what was going on in their groups. The findings contribute to reveal gaps in psycho-social theories, specifically with regard to multicultural group-based work structures. Findings also make a practical contribution, providing some insights to tutors and senior executives who wish to enhance the use of group work as a strategy for improving the awareness of one's own behaviour, sensitivity to the behaviour of others and group consciousness.

The courses called MBA's in Brazil were built according to the American MBA, but with particular characteristics to the Brazilian scenario. These courses have an extensive evaluation literature, both positive about their impacts and critical evaluations of the model. However, in Brazil, there are few studies and analyzes related to this program, either in the objective aspects or in the subjective aspects. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of MBA courses, lato sensu graduate, on the remuneration and promotion of alumni graduated between 2012 and 2017, of the Getulio Vargas Foundation in São Paulo. The hypotheses tested were confirmed, since there were significant effects of 23.63% increase in the average salary of graduates in relation to their pre-MBA salary and 14.54% in the current monthly income in relation to the most probable current income of the graduates if they had not taken the MBA. A migration of lower-entry (entry level) students to higher positions (middle management) and middle management to executive level was also observed, confirming the second hypothesis of this research. From this context, the influence of the experience and the year of MBA training on current income were evaluated, and the first one impacted the income, with the result evidenced that there is a correlation between income and experience. Regarding the training time, in terms of salary differential, it was observed that there was a greater impact for those who graduated the most (2012-2015), since those graduated in the short term (2016-2017) obtained a lower salary difference significant. In the aspects related to the performance in the work, all the results were positive, having the ex-student's perception of the development of greater abilities, leadership and effectiveness of his work in relation to others without an MBA. Finally, for more than 80% of the respondents, MBA courses have a positive impact on employment, contrary to the perception about the increase in wages and / or promotion, which the majority considered not to be positive.

Abstract:
The aim of this doctoral study is to explore the cultural complexities of organizing action learning at three Pakistani business schools with the intention of investigating whether reflective practice can be established as a self-sustaining feature of MBA education. The study informs about the cultural conditions shaping the reflective practice of Pakistani MBA students in action learning by challenging their taken-for-granted assumptions and encouraging habits of critical thinking. However, with a lack of literature that documents the use of action learning in non-western cultures, the empirical insights generated by this study shed light on the difficulties surrounding the potential realization of reflective practice in the Pakistani MBA. This qualitative study is pivotal in filling this gap by providing academics, facilitators and practitioners with a cultural understanding about the organization of reflection in action learning and its situated perspective in a non-western context. This study argues that gaining an understanding of the embodied dispositions of action learners is a significant factor in fostering pedagogies of action within a given cultural context. The data obtained through set observations and interviews with 31 Pakistani MBA students over a 16-week period is indicative of the friction between predisposed, embodied, dispositions (e.g. gender, power, emotions, identity) and action learning’s reflexive character. An explanatory framework, drawing upon Bourdieu’s theory of practice (i.e. habitus, field and capital) helps reveal: cultural dispositions embodied by participants that structure reflective practices, the politics and emotions mobilized during reflection that legitimize power-relations, and the embodied practices shaping group dynamics in the action learning space. The study contributes to action learning practice in the Pakistani MBA and similar contexts, and in particular cautions practitioners to consider culturally sensitive ways of developing a collective space conducive to reflective dialogue. In conclusion, this study emphasises the need to recognize culture and its relation to reflection – i.e. to acknowledge the challenges of embodied dispositions to action learning, the psychological and political implications they have for organizing reflective practice in sets, and the complex interaction between action learning and the embodied and situated culture of Pakistani MBA students.

The correct positioning of products and services in the competitive market is crucial to the firm to define its strategic choices in order to provide a competitive advantage. The quality of the decision is linked to the quality of the information that supports it. Marketing models improve this quality and speed up the decision process. The main stream of this research was to comprehend how consumers visualize products and services and finding a procedure able to represent this image in a model capable to assist the decision maker. To accomplish the proposed objectives, many models that represent consumer perceptions were studied. They are called perception maps. Among the different methodologies, factor analysis was chose to generate them. Using Rio de Janeiros MBAs courses as object of study and a sample of candidates to these schools, the model was evaluated and the conclusion was that it was good to accomplish the goals set previously. Despite the model, after the factor reduction, have explained only 58,7% of the variance, the results were relevant to provide significant information to understand how the segment studied saw these courses. Besides that, the methodology seemed to be a powerful tool to be applied in other services and products in order to support managers in their decision process, diminishing the environment uncertain.

The purpose of MBA education is to foster and educate the future managers. In Taiwan, as the result of the increased number of MBA schools, the supply of MBA is much more than the need now. Nevertheless, many college students still apply for MBA program, because they think the degree will prepare them to be better managers and help them to get better jobs. But the survey found that even though the number of graduate students has been increased to four times than a decade ago, but it does not guarantee the better quality of MBA graduates. Many recruiters argue that the MBA education is not able to prepare its graduate to get the hand of their work more quickly than the college graduates. In other words, there seems to be not so much difference in term of job performance between MBA graduates and college graduates. Therefore, the goal of this research is to analyze the strengths and the weaknesses of the recent MBA graduates comparing with the college graduates. Human resource managers will be interviewed because their jobs involving interviewing, selecting and evaluating employees who include MBA graduates and college graduate. It is believed that their opinion will provide invaluable information regarding the performance of the MBA graduates in comparison with the college graduates. The results of this study show that there is a higher expectation in MBA graduates from the employers than the college graduates. The MBA’s do demonstrate their strengths in reasoning and intellectual ability. They are quicker in learning and have stronger motivation in pursuing success. But comparing with college graduate, there is not much difference in their professional capabilities, presentation skills, and creativities. On the other hand, comparing with college graduates, the evidences show that they tend to be more proud of themselves because they have higher degree. Also they are less obedient to their employers, because they tend to think they have better options and solutions. Moreover, they also have more problems in emotion management. The human resource managers suggest that the MBA’s could enhance their strengths by dedicating their efforts in research and writing dissertation, because it is one of the major characteristics of MBA education which can give them the skill of collecting data and reasoning. Also, in order to learn more about real business practice, participating practical trainings, like internship, is encouraged. In addition, they should overcome their weakness by changing their attitude. In other words, they have to learn to be humble and obedient, because the knowledge they have do not equal better performance.

Following the coming of the age of the knowledge economic, many universities and colleges conduct the Executive MBAs and on the in-service educational learning program for adults. The universities and colleges try to attract by providing the formal master degree and management courses the people who have graduated from schools for a long time, being mostly the managers in their working companies and are capable to pay the higher tuition back to the education system to accept the educational training program. In whole learning process of the educational program, there are many factors that could influence the learning climate and learning effectiveness in some different extent, wherever the learning motivation to take part in the courses, the schedule arrangement of the courses, the professors’s teaching methods and skills and the attitude to the students, or the students’s interactivity learning , and so on. The purpose of the study was to find out what are the learning motivation and learning climate of the students in the Master of the Business Administration in-service program, what are the whole learning effectiveness, what are the relationships among the learning motivation and learning climate and learning effectiveness, how do they influence one another, and how to evaluate that properly. The study selected the students who are attending in the MBA in-service programs with formal master degree as studying samples. Six universities or colleges (four are national and two are private) were selected as subjects for questionnaires and the questionnaires were administered to samples of 196 adult students in MBA in-service programs. The programs encompass business administration, international business, financial management and so on. By factor analysis from the collected data, we got three learning motivation orientations: goal-oriented, activity-oriented, learning-oriented. We got four structural frames in learning climate: involvement, student cohesiveness, professor support, student influence. Learning effectiveness encompasses two structural frames: learning satisfaction and work effectiveness. Findings indicated that the goal-oriented learning motivation has significant influence on learning satisfaction. The goal-oriented and learning-oriented learning motivation has significant influence on work effectiveness. Involvement, professor support and student influence have significant influence on learning satisfaction. Professor support and student influence have significant influence on work effectiveness. Activity-oriented and student cohesiveness have not significant influence on learning satisfaction and work effectiveness.

The recent rebranding of the Global MBA program is set against a potentially beaming and harsh environment of globalization where MBA brand sites are shown to have a significant influence on overseas applicants by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). The thesis uses the design research guidelines to explore and develop a tool to communicate and compare online branding efforts from a stakeholder centric viewpoint. Personas are usually fictional devices created to represent a group of users, here, they represent individual stakeholders. Instead of comparing entire websites, strategy canvas, an artifact derived from "Blue Ocean Strategy"? allows stakeholders to document their comparisons of sample homepages. The resulting strategy canvas based on the relevant traits of the stakeholder offers insights into the behavior and motivations of those stakeholders at the proposal stage of the potential web redevelopment project.

Booyjzsen, Claire. "Bioremediation of hydrocarbon water pollution by bioaugmentation using Southern African bacterial isolates." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/4824.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT A new, non-pathogenic bioaugmentation product was formulated specifically for underground use in South African mines, using local bacterial isolates. This was designed for the remediation of various hydrocarbons via biochemical breakdown by sub-surface microorganisms. The active microorganisms were isolated from hydrocarbon-polluted areas of a gold mine. Many commercially available bioaugmentation products are already in existence however, all, to our knowledge, have been developed and tested primarily for use in the northern hemisphere. None have been formulated and tested in Africa. Our series of bacterial isolates are the first to be isolated from mine soils for hydrocarbon biodegradation purposes. Such isolates have further, not previously been tested on sub-surface contamination. The safety associated with the use of such a product in a closed mine-environment is of paramount importance. Initial batch-flask experiments were conducted using a readily-available commercial bioremediation product. This was tested on simple surfactant molecules and compared to the biodegradation observed under standard waste water treatment plant conditions. The bioremediation product increased biodegradation by 6% on average. Bacteria in the product were identified by 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis and found to be homologous to potentially pathogenic Bacillus cereus, known especially to effect immunocompromised individuals, this was of particular concern in the closed mine system. South African isolates were sourced from various hydrocarbon-polluted sources, with six bacteria ultimately being selected from deep sub-surface mine soil and water samples. The ability of these isolates to biodegrade waterborne monograde engine oil was assessed via GC-FID. The isolate showing average percentage growth increase, homologous to Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes, was found to degrade the motor oil by 98%. The new isolates were, on average, 16% more efficient at biodegrading petroleum hydrocarbons than the commercial bioremediation product isolates. Formulation of these isolates into the first commercially-available South African developed and tested bioaugmentation product will prove a successful conclusion to this study.
