Abstract:
While Krakauer’s Into The Wild depicts McCandless’ flee from society to live in the wild, many reviews argue that McCandless was not really a kind of person who finds freedom in nature. The present study will investigate further the surface characterizations of McCandless as freedom chaser with the plot development to fill the gap between McCandless’ characterizations and the myth of freedom that he chases. By applying Barthes’ mythology, the study reveals that McCandless was described as an adventurer, immaterialist, and loner. However, the plot development reveals that as a person who sought an adventure in nature, McCandless would deal with water, but knowing that he had fear of water, it is contradictive with his characterization as an adventurer. As a person who rejected capitalism and materialist society, he was found working at McDonald's for having money in which both McDonalds and money are symbols of capitalism and materialistic society. As a person who spent his time mostly alone and intended to be alone in Alaska, he was a lonely person after all. Thus these contradictions demystify the myth of freedom that McCandless chases.

Abstract:
In his nonfiction biography of Christopher McCandless, Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer uses a plethora of references to Henry D. Thoreau. In this article I analyze Krakauer’s use of Thoreau’s economic ideas, liberalism, and view of nature and wilderness. I argue that Krakauer blurs a pragmatic understanding of Thoreau and uses techniques of fiction to create an appealing story and characterize McCandless as a latter-day Thoreauvian transcendentalist. By doing so, Krakauer explains and defends the protagonist’s actions from criticism, thereby making him appear as a character whose story is exceptional. Although the characterization of the protagonist as a follower of Thoreauvian ideals by means of a partial interpretation of Thoreau does not provide us with a better understanding of McCandless’s life, Krakauer’s extensive research and the critical self-reflection in the text produces a compelling nonfiction narrative. Moreover, the romantic image of Thoreau advanced by Krakauer reflects the preoccupations and issues that concerned Krakauer, or at least his times. Particularly, it reflects Krakauer’s own ideas concerning the negative effects of materialism on both ourselves and the natural world.

Abstract:
In spite of technological advances and refinements brought about through computerization and other developments, not much has changed in the discourses of stage lighting in North America since Stanley McCandless invented naturalistic forty-five-degree/forty-five-degree area lighting in the 1930s.1 Some seventy years later, although McCandless’s principles, originally articulated for the new theatre at Yale in 1926, have been extended to apply to Broadway, thrust and other stages, lighting design discourse and training still tend to privilege naturalism, the construction of unified psychological “character” as the basic unit of theatrical representation and the construction of actors as the “to-be-looked-at” objects of an audience’s voyeuristic or consumerist gaze.2 Meanwhile, standard theatrical processes and hierarchies in the professional theatre continue to construct lighting as a primarily service industry, providing illumination, atmosphere and decoration long after what is understood to be the valuable conceptual and creative work on a given production has been done.

Abstract:
The recent publication of Achieving Social Equity: From Problems to Solutions, edited by Mary E. Guy and Sean A. McCandless (2020), sparks a move forward in the literature about social equity. To date, much of the literature on social equity has focused on its overall importance (see Frederickson, 2010), as well as the conditions of inequality within the discipline (see Bodkin & Fleming, 2019; Thomas, 2019) and within practice (see Blessett et al., 2019). Despite the attention that has been given to social equity, the National Academy of Public Administration recently included the need to foster social equity as one of the grand challenges for public administration (Gerton & Mitchell, 2019), suggesting it may be time to move the research on social equity into a new era. Guy and McCandless do just that. Rather than discussing the presence of social equity issues with public organizations, the text seeks to advance our understanding by connecting the literature on social equity with the practicality of the situations that administrators face. This is accomplished over a masterfully curated set of 13 chapters, each which focuses on a unique, but vital perspective on social equity.

Zhang, Jingwei. "Respecting Tradition: A Practical Exercise Using Theatrical Stage Lighting to Enhance a Work from Traditional Beijing Opera." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/31541.

Abstract:
During the early 20th century, artists associated with Beijing Opera reformed various elements of the performance to reflect contemporary events. Attempts at reform were deemed unsuccessful since most traditional components of the Beijing Opera were obscured. This thesis explores the use of theatrical stage lighting with specific emphasis on the use of stage lighting to support the aspects of time, space, and mood which are inherent in the performance. The ultimate objective is to do this without destroying the original performance style associated with Beijing Opera. The practical component of this thesis is based on the McCandless method of stage lighting and the application of this method to the lighting design created for Murder of a Concubine, a traditional piece of repertory of the Beijing Opera. The culminating performance was presented on December 1st, 2013 on the Academic Hall stage in the Department of Theatre of the University of Ottawa.

Abstract:
Abstract To tell the nonfiction biography of Christopher McCandless in Into the Wild Jon Krakauer uses a plethora of references to Henry D. Thoreau. In this thesis I study how Krakauer uses Thoreau while balancing on the fine line that differentiates the historian from the storyteller. Through an analysis of Krakauer’s use of Thoreau’s economic ideas, liberal ideas, and view of nature and wilderness I argue that Krakauer blurs a pragmatic understanding of Thoreau and uses techniques of fiction to characterize McCandless as a late Thoreauvian transcendentalist. By doing so, Krakauer explains and defends the protagonist’s actions from criticism making him appear as a character whose story is exceptional. However, the characterization of the protagonist as a follower of Thoreauvian ideals by means of a partial and romantic interpretation of Thoreau is misleading and does not provide us with a better understanding of the life of McCandless. Moreover, the romantic image of Thoreau advanced by Krakauer reflects Krakauer, or at least his times; particularly, it reflects Krakauer’s own view of wilderness and his concern for its impending demise. Consequently, I conclude that Krakauer’s version of McCandless’s story is perhaps too biased to amount to a strong historical narrative and be considered proper nonfiction. Nevertheless, the romanticized characterization of McCandless aids Krakauer to write a more appealing story.

Abstract:
Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is the most common genetic cause of obesity and the first identified genetic imprinting syndrome. Prader-Willi syndrome is caused by the lack of paternally expressed genes in the q11–q13 region of chromosome 15, while the nonexpression of maternally derived genes in the same region leads to Angelman syndrome (a neurologically distinct disorder causing severe mental impairment, seizures, and excessive laughter) (Oliver et al. 2007). Prader-Willi syndrome was first described in 1956 by Prader, Labhart, and Willi (in Butler, Lee, and Whitman 2006) and occurs in approximately 1 in 15,000 births. There is no racial or gender predilection for PWS (however, the syndrome is reported more frequently in Caucasians; Butler, Hanchett and Thompson 2006). Dysmorphic facial features are common in patients with PWS, although these are less specific than the clinical features. Findings may include almond-shaped eyes, strabismus, a narrow temple and nasal bridge, and a down-turned mouth with thin upper lip (Wattendorf and Muenke 2005). Initially, the syndrome was diagnosed via the frequency of key clinical features; however, diagnosis is currently made on the evaluation of gene expression. Prader-Willi syndrome has two distinct clinical phases: the neonatal phase and the hyperphagic (excessive eating) phase, which begins in early childhood. The primary characteristics of the neonatal phase include severe hypotonia, hyporeflexia, poor sucking ability, and decreased weight gain/failure to thrive due to inadequate oral intake, although birth weight is typically normal (McCandless 2005). Thus, feeding is a key concern in infants with PWS. Often, nasogastric tube feedings are employed, and infants are then weaned to breast- or bottle-feeding as they are able. While such difficulties may lead to the suggestion for feeding gastrostomy, this is best avoided due to the scarring effect, magnified by the excess truncal fat that will accumulate in later years (McCandless 2005). Developmental progress during infancy and early childhood is delayed, with most children sitting independently at 1 year and walking at about 2 years. Speech is also slow to advance, and language processing difficulties often continue into adulthood (Lewis 2006).

Abstract:
The pervasiveness of Internet connectivity and the wide diffusion of Java-capable browsers foster innovative techniques for software distribution. In this chapter, we propose a new model for the electronic commerce of software tools based on a pay-per-use rental policy. Pay-per-use rental of downloadable tools is the natural exploitation of Java applets that can be transferred on demand to the user’s machine and executed dynamically inside a browser. While software rental is not a new idea (Flamnia and McCandless, 1996), at present no example of a standard pay-per-use rental mechanism for downloadable software tools exists. This approach benefits from the advantages of central management of tools and zero maintenance for users typical of Java applets, together with a new way to pay for their use. Software rental presents several advantages to producers and users. Pay-per-use rental is particularly suited to Web-based applications, because they are offered to a very heterogeneous and dynamic user population (Bakos and Brynjolfson, 1997). This chapter describes advantages and issues related to pay-per-use, and explains how to add it to Web-based systems, by presenting the example of pay-per-use integration in WebMetrics, a Web-based system providing distributed collection, management, and analysis of source code metrics. This chapter is organized as follows. Section 2 discusses tools-on-demand. Section 3 presents the role of pay-per-use. Section 4 introduces WebMetrics, our prototype pay-per-use application. Section 5 describes the architecture of WebMetrics. Section 6 presents a list of open issues. Section 7 draws some conclusions.
