Abstract:
The total surface stress measured in vitro on acetabular cartilage when step-loaded by an instrumented hemiprosthesis are partitioned into fluid and cartilage network stresses using a finite element model of the cartilage layer and measurements of the layer consolidation. The finite element model is based on in situ measurements of cartilage geometry and constitutive properties. Unique instrumentation was employed to collect the geometry and constitutive properties and pressure and consolidation data. When loaded, cartilage consolidates and exudes its interstitial fluid through and from its solid network into the interarticular gap. The finite element solutions include the spatial distributions of fluid and network stresses, the normal flow velocities into the gap, and the contact network stresses at the cartilage surface, all versus time. Even after long-duration application of physiological-level force, fluid pressure supports 90 percent of the load with the cartilage network stresses remaining well below the drained modulus of cartilage. The results support the “weeping” mechanism of joint lubrication proposed by McCutchen.

Abstract:

Chapelle, Carol A. "Call–English as a Second Language." Annual Review of Applied Linguistics 16 (March 1996): 138–57. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0267190500001483.

Full text
Abstract:
CALL for English as a second language1 is an interdisciplinary area of inquiry which has been influenced primarily by educational technology (Reiser, 1987) but also by fields such as computational linguistics2 and recently by applied linguistics as well. These related fields contribute diverse epistemologies which shape CALL research questions and methods. The diversity in CALL research can also be explained in party be the current variety of approaches to CALL development and use. Through the 1970s and early 1980s, pedagogical objectives in CALL were focused primarily, although not exclusively, on improving specified areas of learner's grammatical knowledge through approaches borrowed from educational technology (Hart 1981, Hope, Taylor and Pusack 1984, Wyatt 1984). Today, in contrast, CALL is used for a variety of pedagogical objectives through many different types of software such as microworlds (Coleman 1985, Papert 1980), grammar checkers (Hull, Ball, Fox, Levin and McCutchen 1987), pronunciation feedback systems (Anderson-Hseih 1994, Pennington 1991), intelligent tutoring systems (Chanier, Pengelly, Twidale and Self 1992), concordancer programs (Johns 1986, Tribble and Jones 1990), word processing (Pennington 1993), and software for computer-mediated communication (Kaye 1992). These diverse approaches to CALL are predicated on different beliefs about teaching and learning (Higgins 1995, Kenning and Kenning 1990, Sanders and Kenner 1983, Stevens 1992). Rather than reviewing these “CALL philosophies,” this article will focus on the evolution of research traditions dedicated to the empirical study of CALL use for ESL. Accordingly, the term CALL research is employed to refer to empirical research on the use of CALL.

Journal of Cell Biology 116, no. 1 (January 1, 1992): 187–96. http://dx.doi.org/10.1083/jcb.116.1.187.

Full text
Abstract:
Transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) has previously been implicated as a potential negative autocrine or paracrine growth regulator of certain cell types (Arteaga, C. L., R. J. Coffey, Jr., T. C. Dugger, C. M. McCutchen, H. L. Moses, and R. M. Lyons. 1990. Cell Growth & Differ. 1:367-374; Hafez, M. M., D. Infante, S. Winawer, and E. Friedman. 1990. Cell Growth & Differ. 1:617-626; Glick, A. B., K. C. Flanders, D. Danielpour, S. H. Yuspa, and M. B. Sporn. 1989. Cell Regulation. 1:87-97). This is based mainly on experiments assessing the effects of exogenous TGF-beta 1 or neutralizing antibodies to TGF-beta 1 on normal or tumor cell proliferation in vitro. However, direct evidence demonstrating such a negative regulation of tumor cell growth in vivo is still lacking. To overcome this problem we have constructed and used an antisense expression vector for TGF-beta 1 as a means of regulating endogenous TGF-beta 1 expression in tumor cells. Antisense-transfected FET human colon carcinoma cells showed a fivefold reduction in TGF-beta 1 mRNA and 15-fold reduction in TGF-beta 1 secretion. Antisense mRNA was detected in transfected cells by an RNase protection assay. Compared to control cells, cultured antisense-transfected cells showed a reduction in lag phase time rather than a change in doubling time. Cloning efficiencies of transfected cells were four times greater than control cells in anchorage-independent assays. Control cells did not form tumors at 5 x 10(5) in athymic nude mice. Antisense-transfected cells formed tumors in 40% of animals injected. At higher inocula (1 x 10(6) cells) antisense-transfected cells formed tumors in 100% of animals injected, but control cells still failed to form tumors. These results show that TGF-beta 1 acts as a negative growth regulator of human colon carcinoma cells in vivo as well as in vitro. Acquisition of partial or full resistance to such inhibitory effects may therefore contribute to tumor development and progression.

Abstract:
Two groups of 60 students each were selected from introductory college psychology classes. One consisted of high academic achievers, the other of average achievers. They were given the McCutcheon Test of Misconceptions, a 65-item, multiple-choice test designed to measure common misconceptions about psychology. Subsequently, they were also given the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal. Both groups made many errors on the McCutcheon test, but high academic achievers made significantly fewer errors on both the McCutcheon test and the Watson-Glaser than average achievers. A stepwise multiple regression consisting of Watson-Glaser subscales 1 (the ability to draw valid inferences) and 4 (ability to weigh and interpret evidence) and GPA successfully predicted McCutcheon test scores ( R = .43). This suggests that even beginning students with high grades and good critical thinking skills are likely to harbor many misconceptions about psychology.

Abstract:
At a recent workshop during the 2019 meeting of the AAR in San Diego, California, Dr. Russell McCutcheon offered valuable advice to graduate students seeking employment after graduation. As the job market, particularly the academic job market, tightens, it has become increasingly difficult for any to find a job in the specialty their dissertation prepared them for. The solution McCutcheon suggested is rooted from his experience with the field itself: reinvention. His workshop on writing CVs illustrated the need in this changing market for graduate students to be able to describe the skills they have obtained in a way that makes their interests applicable to a wide range of jobs in the field rather than limiting themselves to a niche specialty that may limit potential jobs.

Abstract:
In a discussion I had with Professor J. J. McCutcheon and Dr W. F. Scott, the authors of the new book on compound interest, An Introduction to the Mathematics of Finance (Heinemann 1986) it was suggested that a chapter describing the theoretical economic background to the determination of interest rates might be of interest to actuarial students. I therefore drafted the substance of this note as such a chapter. In the event it was felt that the subject fitted uneasily with the mainly technical and numerical approach to compound interest appropriate for students at that particular stage of the examinations, and that the more theoretical approach in this note would in any case be of wider actuarial interest. It is therefore presented as this note in the Journal. I am grateful to Professor McCutcheon and Dr Scott for agreeing to this, and to the discussions I had with them while the note was being drafted.

Abstract This article discusses the role of the category Religion in the modern state formation. The liberal private/public religion/state rhetoric plays a central part in the “rise” of the modern state. The binary oppositions of this rhetoric are crucial to the creation of a very unique type of society, which serves as the basis for the formation of the modern state. With reference to Russell McCutcheon, this essay examines this process, drawing on examples from early modern political philosophy (e.g., Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau), before explicitly tackling the question of the role of religion by addressing two German (Fischer and Böckenförde) authors in particular.

Abstract:
This article considers the organizations, financial patrons, and lawyers involved in two significant campaign finance cases decided by the Roberts Court: Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission and McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission. The research indicates that these elements of the support structures for litigation on both sides of these cases, like the justices to whom they direct their advocacy, fall into well-defined opposing and partisan camps. It also suggests that strategic case selection on the challengers' side, the diversity of organizations supporting their positions, their network and coordination, and a simple and powerful frame around which to rally may have contributed to their success and to the Roberts Court's fundamental reshaping of campaign finance doctrine.

Abstract:
AbstractOffensive performance in baseball depends on a number of correlated factors: the pitches the batter faces, the batter’s choice to swing, and the batter’s hitting ability. Recently a renewed focus on the effect of plate discipline on batter performance has emerged. Plate discipline has traditionally been summarized as the proportion of pitches inside and outside of the strike zone a player swings at; however, there have been few metrics proposed to assess the effect of plate discipline directly on batters’ outcomes. In this paper, we focus on estimating a batter’s performance if he were able to adopt a different plate discipline. Because we wish to assess the effect of a counterfactual plate discipline, we use a potential outcome framework and show how the G-computation algorithm can be used to isolate the effect of plate discipline separately from a batter’s hitting ability or the types of pitches the batter faces. As an example, we implement our approach using data collected with the PITCHf/x system over the 2012–2014 seasons to identify the improvement Starlin Castro would expect to see in offensive performance were he able to adopt Andrew McCutchen’s plate discipline. We estimate that had Castro adopted McCutchen’s discipline his batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage would have increased 0.017 (se = 0.004), 0.040 (se = 0.006), and 0.028 (se = 0.008), respectively.
