Full text--- This research addresses the problem of lack of robustness, by replacing the covariance matrix obtained with the classical method for the covariance matrix obtained with the robust MCD method (Todorov and Filzmoser, 2009). The robust method MCD: Minimun Covariance Determinant, involves making estimates for the mean vector and covariance matrix from the selection of a subsample obtained from the resampling of the data set under study, whose main characteristic is that it has the covariance matrix with the minimum determinant. Many times, the statistical analysis in the presence of outliers, by standard methods, can be misleading because of the sensitivity of these methods, which is why the objective of this paper is to present the methodology of the MCD estimators in order to achieve the "robustified covariance matrix" which will be used to perform Principal Component Analysis on data sets with the presence of outliers. We illustrate the methodology of the theory and application, for two sets of data, research results in the Botany (Quinteros, 2010 and Gomez, et. Al., 2008), we analyze the behavior of the Principal Components with the MCD method and we compare it to the classic methodology. It is determined that the principal components obtained by the MCD method allows to find better indicators for data sets with outliers. -- Keywords: Minimum Covariance Determinant, MCD, Principal Components, Robust Estimation, Scatter Matrix.

Gold and silver particles with dimensions less than a nanometer possess unique characteristics and properties that are different from the properties of the bulk. They demonstrate a non–zero HOMO–LUMO gap that can reach up to 3.0 eV. These differences arise from size quantization effects in the metal core due to the small number of atoms. These nanoparticles have attracted great interest for decades both in fundamental and applied research. Small gold clusters protected by various types of ligands are of interest because ligands allow obtaining gold nanoclusters with given sizes, shapes and properties. Three main families of organic ligands are usually used for stabilization of gold nanoclusters: phosphine ligands, thiolate ligands and DNA. Usually, optical properties of these NPs are studied using optical absorption spectroscopy. Unfortunately, sometimes this type of spectrum is poorly resolved and tends to appear very similar for different complexes. In these cases, circular dichroism (CD) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy can be applied. However, the interpretation of experimental CD and MCD spectra is a complicated process. In this thesis, theoretically simulated CD and MCD spectra were combined with optical absorption spectra to study optical activity for octa– and nona– and undecanuclear gold clusters protected by mono– and bidentate phosphine ligands. Additionally, optical properties of bare and DNA protected silver NPs were studied. Theoretical CD spectra were examined to learn more about the origin of chirality in chiral organometallic complexes, and to contribute to the understanding of the difference in chiroptical activity of gold clusters stabilized by different phosphine ligands and DNA–stabilized silver clusters. Furthermore, optical properties of the small centered gold clusters Au₈(PPh₃)₈²⁺ and Au₉(PPh₃)₈³⁺ were examined by optical absorption and MCD spectra using TDDFT. Theoretical MCD spectra were also used to identify the plasmonic behavior of silver nanoparticles. These results showed that CD and MCD spectroscopy yield more detailed information about optical properties and electronic structure of the different chemical systems than optical absorption spectroscopy alone. Theoretical simulation of the CD and MCD spectra together with optical absorption spectra can be used to assist in the understanding of empirically measured CD and MCD and provide useful information about optical properties and electronic structure.

Full textThis work presents a new three-phase high power factor single-stage AC-DC converter based on the DCM SEPIC topology, using bidirectional switches. This converter operates as a voltage follower even in open loop (SEPIC DCM converter characteristic), in other words, it emulates a resistance from the electric grid point of view. Therefore, the control effort is reduced to a single control loop to control the DC output voltage, like an output voltage control of a DC-DC converter. This single-stage converter has high reliability, since it employs four active switches with the same command signal and six high frequency diodes for AC-DC conversion with high power factor and high frequency isolation. A system disadvantage is related to the constraint in the choice of transformer turns, which leads to high current values in the secondary-side for lower output voltage specifications. Hereon are presented the operation modes, the ideal waveforms, the main equations of the converter, the numerical simulation results contrasting with the theoretical values and experimental results. Design specifications are 127 V input voltage, 200 V output voltage, 50 kHz switching frequency and 1500 W output power. The prototype is obtained by following the specifications and it shows 0.9981 of power factor, 4.234% of total harmonic distortion and 85.522% of efficiency for rated condition. This converter is considered a choice for low power three-phase systems with low cost realization.

Full textFerrofluids are colloidal suspensions of magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in a carrier liquid. The intimate interaction between the magnetic nanoparticles and the liquid provides a unique system, from both fundamental and industrial application point of views, whose flow and properties can be precisely controlled using an external magnetic field. Magnetic nanoparticles of spinel ferrites MFe2O4 (M = Fe2+, Co2+, Mn2+…) are of particular scientific interest and have been extensively studied for their electrical and magnetic properties. Spinel ferrites find potential applications, notably in storage devices, for computers, or hyperthermia, for cancer treatment, where high magnetic anisotropy energies are required at the nanoscale. However, deeper knowledges of the fine mechanisms playing a significant role on the magnetic anisotropies existing in the nanospinels are necessary to help the creation of rationalized materials with controlled magnetic anisotropies for the requirement of the system. In this thesis, we have used X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) as an original approach for probing the magnetic anisotropies and magnetic couplings of nanospinels obtained in ferrofluids. The nanoparticles are iron bearing spinels for which cobalt ions have been introduced in the spinel structure of the nanoparticles as a true makers of magnetic anisotropy. First, magnetic nanospinels have been synthesized by tuning their size and composition and using different synthesis processes. XMCD investigations revealed that the coercive field of the nanospinels is governed by the concentration of Co2+ ions sitting in octahedral sites of the spinel structure, and this can be directly linked to some synthesis parameters. Then, we have investigated core@shell nanoparticles, which can be synthesized with an appropriate choice of magnetic anisotropies for the core and the shell in order to tailor optimal magnetic properties. In the case of MnFe2O4@CoFe2O4, our findings reveal that the very thin CoFe2O4 shell imposes a strong magnetic anisotropy to the otherwise very soft MnFe2O4 core. The other class of ferrofluids that has been investigated during this thesis are binary ferrofluids that are constituted of two different types of magnetic nanoparticles. For such systems, the carrier liquid must be preserved to understand the magnetic interactions in the ferrofluid as they are. Another motivation of this thesis was thus to extend XMCD to the in situ investigation of the nanospinels dispersed in ferrofluids. We have been started a liquid cell development in the DEIMOS beamline at SOLEIL. The setup is still in progress and is aimed at being compatible with soft X-Rays short penetration depth and ultra-high vacuum environment. Hard X-ray photon-in/photon-out spectroscopy coupled to XMCD (1s2p RIXS-MCD) can be a very valuable alternative to soft X-ray XMCD at K-edge of 3d elements when liquid cell sample environment is required. The instrumental development of a liquid cell used with 1s2p RIXS-MCD spectroscopy allowed us to investigate the nanoparticles directly in the ferrofluids revealing interparticles magnetic couplings in binary ferrofluids

Full textThis work presents the study and development of the small-signal dynamic modeling of the ZETA converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode, powered from photovoltaic solar panels in order to connect them to the power grid. Initially, it is presented a study of the main characteristics of solar cells. A deep analysis of the ZETA converter working in steady state is performed, considering that the Zeta converter synthesizes a rectified sine wave current with the same frequency as the power grid. This feature makes this converter a key part in implementing the module integrated inverter for photovoltaic systems. The converter is analyzed in the switching frequency and in the power grid frequency. A detailed examination of the dynamic behavior of the Zeta converter is achieved by the state-space averaging modeling approach, resulting in a linear analytical model described in state variables. In all tests it was assumed that the commercial power grid presents a resistive load behavior (variable value). Finally, the analytical dynamic model obtained is validated through computer simulations and by laboratory tests on a prototype specially designed for this purpose.

Full textThis work proposes the study and implementation of resonant controllers applied to photovoltaic panels grid-tied by a Zeta converter. This converter is designed to synthesize a rectified sinusoidal waveform current with low-harmonic content. Operating in discontinuous conduction mode, the Zeta Converter is connected to a full-bridge inverter so that one semi-cycle of the output current is inverted for every cycle of the power grid voltage, allowing the connection of PV panels to the power grid. The assembly formed by PV panel and inverter is known as Module-Integrated Inverter (MII). By aiming the project of resonant controllers, an analysis of the Zeta converter is presented, including its state-space model proposed in previous works. Furthermore, fundamental robust control concepts involved on the resonant controllers project are presented. In order to determine the gains of the resonant controllers, a formulation based on Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) that guarantees the stability and performance of the closed-loop system is presented. A state-observer is also designed, reducing the number of variables that must be measured. Finally, the developed control strategy is validated through computational simulations and laboratorial tests on a prototype specially developed to this purpose. The results obtained by the experimental results validated the purpose, confirming the viability of using resonant controllers for this application, in order to synthesize a sinusoidal current waveform with low-harmonic content, synchronized with the power grid.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Outliers may be defined as observations that are sufficiently aberrant to arouse the suspicion of the analyst as to their origin. They could be the result of human error, in which case they should be corrected, but they may also be an interesting exception, and this would deserve further investigation. Identification of outliers typically consists of an informal inspection of a plot of the data, but this is unreliable for dimensions greater than two. A formal procedure for detecting outliers allows for consistency when classifying observations. It also enables one to automate the detection of outliers by using computers. The special case of univariate data is treated separately to introduce essential concepts, and also because it may well be of interest in its own right. We then consider techniques used for detecting multiple outliers in a multivariate normal sample, and go on to explain how these may be generalized to include cluster analysis. Multivariate outlier detection is based on the Minimum Covariance Determinant (MCD) subset, and is therefore treated in detail. Exact bivariate algorithms were refined and implemented, and the solutions were used to establish the performance of the commonly used heuristic, Fast–MCD.

Introduction:This thesis was elaborated on the basis of scientific articles. It is observed that women have undergone several changes in the social, family and professional fields, and have conquered spaces in society, which has been positive; on the other hand, this has negatively impacted their quality of life and their body image. In this context, belly dancing has been sought as an alternative to this problem. Objective: To analyze the quality of life and body image of women who practice belly dancing. Method: two articles. 1) Systematic review elaborated according to PRISMA (2009), of quantitative studies registered in electronic platforms, identified with the descriptors quality of life, dance and women, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, and published until June 30, 2017, in any local. The mean and standard deviation of the quality of life outcomes were compared, with a significant difference. We used reference management software and bias risk assessment. The article was prepared by two independent reviewers. 2) Cross-sectional study according to STROBE (2008), using a sociodemographic questionnaire, WHOQOL-bref and Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), Statistical Analysis of Chi-square, Cronbach's Alpha, Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman correlation, with significance level 5% (p <0.05). Results: 1) Review of nine randomized clinical trials that used four instruments to assess the quality of life of overweight, cancer, fibromyalgia or non-health-related women; age from 20 to 64 years old, practicing belly dancing, zumba, circular dance, and Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) for a period of three to sixteen weeks. Studies analyzed in subgroups, with significance in the results of eight of them, with improvements, mainly in the physical and psychological domains of quality of life, with the intervention of some type of dance for at least eight weeks. 2) A cross-sectional study with 98 women, mean age of 32.8 (± 10.4) years. Among those surveyed, 89.8% had no concern with body image; 7.1% showed mild concern; and 3.1%, moderate concern. The following were found: positive correlation between the preoccupation with body image and BMI (r = 0.52, p <0.01); (r = -0.50, p <0.001) and environmental (r = - 0.35, p = 0.02) in women who practiced dancing for less than one year, and in the social domain (r = - 0.61, p = 0.01), those who practiced dance for six years or more; and positive correlation between the environmental domain (r = 0.29, p = 0.01) and dance time. Conclusions: In the systematic review, it was verified that dance improves the quality of life of adult women in the physical and psychological domains, when practiced at least twice a week, for at least eight weeks. In the cross-sectional study, there was a positive correlation between preoccupation with body image and measures of BMI, and between time of belly dance practice and quality of life; and negative correlation between quality of life and preoccupation with body image.

Full textDr. Eleine Mad is Madeleine Jacobsson's spokesperson for the scientific and paranormal discoveries that arise in her worlds. She describes content, tecniques and aesthetics based on a categorization system where art is divided into different types of components and then decoded as they go. To understand the intuition's involvement in the work process, it is transformed into three separate roles by a Seeker, Collector and a Myntare(In swedish language the one who is a "myntare" -is verbally declaring a concept or term). With these roles I try to describe in what ways intuition is beneficial or devastating to the artistic work. The story of M is about a frog-like character, Delop, who leaves the home planet to seek out other worlds. In her search, Delop finds a world whose views and lifestyles differ from her experiences of "reality" as she learned to survive in it.
