Abstract:
Comics are media that people of all ages can enjoy, and while some comics have age restriction, The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is a comic that targets both young and old readers. As it is the story of Scrooge McDuck’s rise to success, the comic depicts aggressiveness not only physically through violence and facial expression but also verbally through the usage of harsh language. The objective of this research is to analyze (1) the translation procedures that are used in the comic The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck and (2) their correlation with the visual elements of the comic. This research uses Vinay and Darbelnet (1958/1998) theories on translation procedures by basing the utterance of harsh language on theories proposed by Ljung (2011) and Ford (2016). This research uses the qualitative descriptive method, and the data were taken by setting the limitation on the character’s facial expression at the time of the utterance of harsh language. From this research, it can be concluded that the translator utilizes many translation procedures to translate the harsh language, in particular the reduction procedure. This research also shows that translation procedures are utilized to reduce the element of verbal aggressiveness, yet the procedures that are used do not influence the intention behind the utterance as the aggressiveness has been presented through the visuals.

Abstract:
Abstract Conventional dendritic cells (cDC) are potent antigen-presenting cells that induce the activation of naïve T cells in response to pathogens. cDC activity is mediated primarily by two cDC subsets, namely cDC1 and cDC2, each bearing unique properties. Recently, another DC subset, termed merocytic dendritic cells (mcDC), was defined. In contrast to both cDC1 and cDC2, mcDC are able to reverse T cell anergy, even in non-inflammatory conditions, properties that could be exploited to potentiate cancer treatments. Here, we further characterize mcDC to determine their relationship to cDCs. First, we demonstrate that mcDC express key cDC traits, namely they express the cDC-restricted transcription factor, Zbtb46, and are very potent inducers of mixed lymphocyte reactions. Second, transcriptomic studies reveal that mcDC are more closely related to cDC1 than to cDC2. In contrast, similar to cDC2, mcDC are dependent on IRF4, but not IRF8 and BATF3, two major transcription factors required for cDC1 differentiation. Third, investigating mcDC population dynamics in reconstitution kinetics studies and in parabiotic mice, we demonstrate that, as for cDC1 and cDC2, mcDCs are terminally differentiated cells. Altogether, these data demonstrate that mcDC compose novel cDC subset. Defining the properties of mcDC in mice may help identify a functionally equivalent subset in humans leading to the development of novel cancer immunotherapies.

Abstract:
The animated film Me & My Mum was released in mainland China and Hong Kong in 2014 and proved to be a huge box office hit, cashing in on the existing McDull animated films that are hailed as the best animations in Hong Kong. Previous scholarship suggests that the McDull animated film series is a symbol of Hong Kong local culture; it serves as a repository of the changing landscapes of Hong Kong and demonstrates hybrid identities. However, this article argues that the McDull animated film series is more translocal than local, a fact which reveals the dynamics of the Hong Kong–mainland China relationship after Hong Kong’s return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. The translocalized McDull series demonstrates an obsession with Chineseness which helps to evoke the national identity. By aestheticizing powerlessness as cuteness through anthropomorphic animals, the McDull series used to be highly political; they grappled with the wounds of society in Hong Kong. However, the articulation of a well-rounded McDull in the translocalized film Me & My Mum indicates that it is conforming to the Chinese Communist Party’s ideology of ideal children while the political power of aestheticizing powerlessness is repressed, revealing the dominant power of the Chinese film market.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to design a sustainable supply chain network (SCN) for omnichannel environment in order to provide better service to customers through flexible distribution. Thus, there is a need to incorporate multiple-channel distribution in the network design of supply chains (SCs). Design/methodology/approach A multiple-channel distribution supply chain network (MCDSCN) has been proposed under omnichannel environment. This proposed model integrates online giants with local retailer’s distribution network in an uncertain environment with sustainability. To incorporate sustainability, an objective function is added to reduce carbon content along with other objectives of minimization of SC cost. The model turns out to be mixed-integer linear programming model which is coded in GAMS and solved using CPLEX solver. Findings The proposed MCDSCN model is compared with conventional SCN. Furthermore, it was found that the proposed MCDSCN model has achieved significant saving in SC cost and is also more sustainable than conventional SCN. The proposed model also enables online giants to integrate their distribution network with local retailer’s distribution network. Practical implications Through proposed model, customers are free to access product and services as per their choice of channels which increases their convenience, reach and satisfaction. Originality/value The proposed MCDSCN model is a novel approach to design flexible distribution systems. This would significantly help organizations to design their distribution network more effectively to meet global competition.

Abstract:
We say that a countable group $G$ is McDuff if it admits a free ergodic probability measure preserving action such that the crossed product is a McDuff $\text{II}_{1}$ factor. Similarly, $G$ is said to be stable if it admits such an action with the orbit equivalence relation being stable. The McDuff property, stability, inner amenability and property Gamma are subtly related and several implications and non-implications were obtained in Effros [Property $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ and inner amenability. Abstract:
A number of logical code coverage criteria have been used throughout the years in the testing of safety-critical software. Kaminski, et al. proposed Relational Operator Replacement Global (RORG), a method to bring benefits from ROR mutation to Modified Condition / Decision Coverage (MCDC), which is widely used in the avionics industry. However, there is a lack of studies in the industry to support this method. In this thesis, we report on the results of applying RORG to avionic code, augmenting an MCDC adequate test set to satisfy RORG, evaluating its ability to find real faults in industrial software. Conclusions drawn from this thesis are: (1) Faults in relational operators in avionic code are rare, no faults were found in this study. (2) 24% of the relational operators in our study would require additional software requirements to be verified for RORG coverage. (3) 37% of the relational operators in our study were infeasible to test due to program semantics. (4) 84% of the tests added covered enumeration comparisons.

Abstract:

The thesis regards the animation films My life as Mcdull and Mcdull, Prince de la Bun made by Hong Kong artists as primary texts, adopting theory of metafiction to investigate the meta characteristics presented by the form and the content of these two movies and trying to sort out the context of metafictive writing techniques through the interaction between the images and the narrative form. That is, the thesis focuses on how the structure and writing strategy of the movies display the meta characteristics and how the process of narration and collage images present meta characteristics. The finding is that the structure of the story is set up in a double – fictional frame with metafictive devices, and thus the characters can move in and out the factual world and the fictional world to explore the relationship between fictional form and social reality. On the one hand, through collage images , these films not only enrich the structure and the texture but also construct the factual-like illusion to enforce the connection between the viewers and the factual world and appeal the viewers entering the fictional story. On the other hand, characters make comments on the story, plot, and their own lives to reveal the texts to be constructed to emphasize the differences between the fictional world and factual world making a distance between the viewers and the story. Moreover, adopting the metafictive devices “parody” and “intertextuality”, the films reverses the stereotype on social culture and education in real Hong Kong with humorous and funny plots to offer the viewers a different kind of thought. In brief, the metafictive writing can not only be kind of creating technique, but also encourages the viewers to think more with different perspectives and create more interpretations.

McDuie, Fiona. "Critical foraging locations and oceanographic relationships for Great Barrier Reef breeding seabirds." Thesis, 2016. https://researchonline.jcu.edu.au/46636/1/46636-mcduie-2016-thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Pelagic seabirds are completely reliant upon the marine environment for all resources, but conservation strategies largely ignore critical at-sea food resources. Little is known of trophic mechanisms influencing prey availability for tropical seabirds. Until now, most studies of tropical regions focused on specific oceanographic characteristics in the marine environment, and often single species, with widely varying results. Consequently, is has been difficult to unequivocally determine the relative importance of mechanisms. Therefore, this study aimed to track a tropical Procellariiform through all life phases, to analyse multiple components simultaneously and to develop a comprehensive understanding of the linkages in tropical systems and model of tropical seabird foraging ecology. Key foraging areas for wedge-tailed shearwaters breeding in the Australian Great Barrier Reef (GBR), and related oceanographic characteristics, were identified and mapped at three spatial scales. GBR breeding shearwaters are the first tropical Procellariiform to have been found to conduct a lengthy trans-equatorial migration, moving to a single core-use non-breeding foraging ground near Micronesia, ~6000km from the breeding colony. This area was characterised by low primary productivity ([Chl a]), low wind speeds and positive sea level anomalies (SLAs). A combination of characteristics suggest that foraging occurs at the peripheries of large to mesoscale eddies where fronts likely aggregate prey. The overlap of shearwater foraging activity with the Western Central Pacific Tuna Fishery (WCPTF), and documented links between tuna and frontal systems in this region suggest that sub-surface predator activity further enhances prey availability to these non-breeding seabirds. During breeding, shearwaters undertook long, self-provisioning trips, to reach distant foraging sites between 300km and ~1000km from the colony. Foraging areas were characterised by deep water near areas of steep bathymetric change and commonly had strong associations with positive SLAs and medium current speeds. Again, these results are consistent with shearwaters foraging in convergence zones at the periphery of eddies. Contrary to expectations, foraging sites were not associated with elevated levels of primary productivity. Furthermore, identified foraging locations were not within currently managed areas of the GBR Marine Park. An overlap with tuna fishery suggests a similarly important association with sub-surface predators in this region. Finally, short, chick-provisioning trips, were undertaken within 300km of the colony. This conclusively demonstrated the use of foraging grounds at two separate spatial scales during chick-rearing. Five separate topographically unique foraging zones were used during these short trips. All were in areas of steep bathymetric change where the activity of the 'Capricorn Eddy' generated frontal activity. A range of oceanographic parameters was shown to influence foraging activity, their relative importance differing among zones and seasons. More intense foraging was associated with rapidly changing sea-surface temperature (SST) gradients, as well as negative SST and [Chl a] anomalies. Combined, these results demonstrate strong links to the presence, movement and intensity of the Capricorn Eddy. An additional strong association with frontal formations where freshwater river plumes merge with the Eddy in a coastal, inshore foraging zone also highlights the previously unrealised importance of terrestrial inputs on shearwater reproductive success. This is, to my knowledge, a phenomenon not previously been seen to influence foraging pelagic seabirds in tropical regions. Therefore, resources used for chick provisioning are reliant upon two unique phenomena, the Capricorn Eddy and freshwater input. The results in this study highlight a number of significant facts relevant to shearwater foraging ecology. First, wedge-tailed shearwaters forage at three spatial scales, implying that management and conservation priorities must be considered separately for each location. Second, mesoscale oceanographic phenomena, primarily eddies, their peripheries and convergence zones, are broadly important to shearwaters, influencing foraging activity at all spatial scales. Third, elevated [Chl a] is not an important influence in general, which directly contrasts with most previous seabird studies. Fourth, SSTs are generally important, as expected, and specific, narrow temperature ranges demonstrate links with foraging areas. Fifth, that sub-surface predator interactions may be very important to adult shearwaters when self-provisioning during both breeding and non-breeding. Finally, much of the environment shown to be important to shearwaters currently has little, if any, management and/or conservation strategies in place that consider the needs of pelagic seabirds. These data form a general model of tropical seabird foraging ecology which demonstrates the importance of mesoscale oceanic phenomena, especially eddies, convergences, and freshwater input, to foraging pelagic seabirds. Inter-annual variations suggest that climate-driven processes can heavily affect the oceanography and dynamics of foraging grounds, supporting previous links between climate-driven variation and variations in prey availability to wedge-tailed shearwaters. Therefore, these factors should be considered in future modelling and mapping of ideal or remaining habitat. Combined, these results reveal the complexity of oceanography and ocean dynamics that drive prey availability in tropical seabird foraging areas, and highlight the fact that some previously supposed factors of importance are not necessarily so. Therefore, determining optimal foraging habitat for tropical pelagic foraging seabirds is a complicated process and multiple oceanographic parameters must be assessed to best define the trophic mechanisms and processes that drive foraging activity and prey accessibility. This comprehensive data set can be used to determine best practise strategies for the protection and conservation of wedge-tailed shearwaters. Identified foraging locations are priority target areas in which threats to seabirds can now be assessed. Threat assessment will help ensure optimal management and conservation efforts are implemented and carried out in critical foraging locations which will help to mitigate any impacts that may arise from climate-driven variation on foraging habitat. The results can also be applied in a global context to identify internationally recognised, candidate protected areas, such as Marine Important Bird Areas (MIBAs) in tropical systems. Additionally, my findings highlight potential new selection criteria, such as some quantification of sub-surface predator interactions that should perhaps be considered for use in identifying MIBAs in tropical regions.

Abstract:
A model of the nut connection components of a 600MW supercritical steam turbine was established by finite element analysis to investigate the influence of creep on the nut connection components. Due to the complex structure and the multi-axial loadings, Cocks-Ashby coefficients were used to depict the multi-axial creep behavior. Multi-axial creep deformation criteria (MCDC) and multi-axial creep rupture criteria (MCRC) were used to assess the structure reliability. In addition, sealing performance of the nut connection components in the creep time of 2×105 hours was numerically investigated in terms of the contact pressure and the radial contact length. The results demonstrated that the creep strength of the nut connection components after 2×105 hours could maintain the safety operation of the nut connection components. The contact pressure distribution and the radial contact length in circumferential could prevent the leakage steam flow from the high pressure zone to the low pressure zone.
