Abstract:
Comics are media that people of all ages can enjoy, and while some comics have age restriction, The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck is a comic that targets both young and old readers. As it is the story of Scrooge McDuck’s rise to success, the comic depicts aggressiveness not only physically through violence and facial expression but also verbally through the usage of harsh language. The objective of this research is to analyze (1) the translation procedures that are used in the comic The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck and (2) their correlation with the visual elements of the comic. This research uses Vinay and Darbelnet (1958/1998) theories on translation procedures by basing the utterance of harsh language on theories proposed by Ljung (2011) and Ford (2016). This research uses the qualitative descriptive method, and the data were taken by setting the limitation on the character’s facial expression at the time of the utterance of harsh language. From this research, it can be concluded that the translator utilizes many translation procedures to translate the harsh language, in particular the reduction procedure. This research also shows that translation procedures are utilized to reduce the element of verbal aggressiveness, yet the procedures that are used do not influence the intention behind the utterance as the aggressiveness has been presented through the visuals.

Abstract:
Abstract Conventional dendritic cells (cDC) are potent antigen-presenting cells that induce the activation of naïve T cells in response to pathogens. cDC activity is mediated primarily by two cDC subsets, namely cDC1 and cDC2, each bearing unique properties. Recently, another DC subset, termed merocytic dendritic cells (mcDC), was defined. In contrast to both cDC1 and cDC2, mcDC are able to reverse T cell anergy, even in non-inflammatory conditions, properties that could be exploited to potentiate cancer treatments. Here, we further characterize mcDC to determine their relationship to cDCs. First, we demonstrate that mcDC express key cDC traits, namely they express the cDC-restricted transcription factor, Zbtb46, and are very potent inducers of mixed lymphocyte reactions. Second, transcriptomic studies reveal that mcDC are more closely related to cDC1 than to cDC2. In contrast, similar to cDC2, mcDC are dependent on IRF4, but not IRF8 and BATF3, two major transcription factors required for cDC1 differentiation. Third, investigating mcDC population dynamics in reconstitution kinetics studies and in parabiotic mice, we demonstrate that, as for cDC1 and cDC2, mcDCs are terminally differentiated cells. Altogether, these data demonstrate that mcDC compose novel cDC subset. Defining the properties of mcDC in mice may help identify a functionally equivalent subset in humans leading to the development of novel cancer immunotherapies.

Abstract:
The animated film Me & My Mum was released in mainland China and Hong Kong in 2014 and proved to be a huge box office hit, cashing in on the existing McDull animated films that are hailed as the best animations in Hong Kong. Previous scholarship suggests that the McDull animated film series is a symbol of Hong Kong local culture; it serves as a repository of the changing landscapes of Hong Kong and demonstrates hybrid identities. However, this article argues that the McDull animated film series is more translocal than local, a fact which reveals the dynamics of the Hong Kong–mainland China relationship after Hong Kong’s return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. The translocalized McDull series demonstrates an obsession with Chineseness which helps to evoke the national identity. By aestheticizing powerlessness as cuteness through anthropomorphic animals, the McDull series used to be highly political; they grappled with the wounds of society in Hong Kong. However, the articulation of a well-rounded McDull in the translocalized film Me & My Mum indicates that it is conforming to the Chinese Communist Party’s ideology of ideal children while the political power of aestheticizing powerlessness is repressed, revealing the dominant power of the Chinese film market.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to design a sustainable supply chain network (SCN) for omnichannel environment in order to provide better service to customers through flexible distribution. Thus, there is a need to incorporate multiple-channel distribution in the network design of supply chains (SCs). Design/methodology/approach A multiple-channel distribution supply chain network (MCDSCN) has been proposed under omnichannel environment. This proposed model integrates online giants with local retailer’s distribution network in an uncertain environment with sustainability. To incorporate sustainability, an objective function is added to reduce carbon content along with other objectives of minimization of SC cost. The model turns out to be mixed-integer linear programming model which is coded in GAMS and solved using CPLEX solver. Findings The proposed MCDSCN model is compared with conventional SCN. Furthermore, it was found that the proposed MCDSCN model has achieved significant saving in SC cost and is also more sustainable than conventional SCN. The proposed model also enables online giants to integrate their distribution network with local retailer’s distribution network. Practical implications Through proposed model, customers are free to access product and services as per their choice of channels which increases their convenience, reach and satisfaction. Originality/value The proposed MCDSCN model is a novel approach to design flexible distribution systems. This would significantly help organizations to design their distribution network more effectively to meet global competition.

We say that a countable group $G$ is McDuff if it admits a free ergodic probability measure preserving action such that the crossed product is a McDuff $\text{II}_{1}$ factor. Similarly, $G$ is said to be stable if it admits such an action with the orbit equivalence relation being stable. The McDuff property, stability, inner amenability and property Gamma are subtly related and several implications and non-implications were obtained in Effros [Property $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ and inner amenability. <p>This article reviews the Mid-Career Development Chinese Language course (MCDCL) funded by the British Inter-university China Centre, a project funded from various public sources in the UK. The discussion focuses on how and why the MCDCL course has adopted the blended learning construct and with what outcomes. Using two frameworks for blended learning – the Community of Inquiry and the Sloan-C Pillars – it offers a thorough examination of the MCDCL course, and discusses the results of a survey which was devised to collect feedback from participants on the course. The article concludes that the MCDCL course throws up particular challenges for the blended learning concept as a whole. A detailed evaluation highlights areas for attention ranging from how the course is organised and workloads are balanced, to the approach of teachers in their level of involvement in distance learning, and the overall management of the course with regard to the use of technology, cost-effectiveness and a host of other considerations.</p>

Abstract:
Abstract In contrast to conventional dendritic cells (cDC), when merocytic DC (mcDC) present antigens (Ag) derived from apoptotic bodies, T cell anergy is reversed rather than induced. Although helpful to tumour clearance, reversing T cell anergy is detrimental in autoimmunity. Interestingly, mcDC are present in higher proportion in type 1 diabetes (T1D)-prone NOD mice than in B6 mice. Recently, we found that the Idd13 T1D locus is linked to the control of mcDC number. Indeed, NOD.B6-Idd13 congenic mice are resistant to T1D and have the same low number of mcDC as the parental B6 mice. Thus, we hypothesize that defining the genetic factor implicated in the regulation of mcDC number could help maintain self-tolerance and prevent T1D onset. Within the Idd13 locus, both B2m and Bim are likely candidate genes. By exploiting both B2m−/−and Bim−/−mice, we show that B2m does not affect mcDC number while mcDC were significantly increased in Bim−/−mice. Competitive hematopoietic chimera validate Bim as an intrinsic factor implicated in the regulation of mcDC proportion. In line with a role for Bim in regulating mcDC number, we demonstrate that the caspase activity and Bcl2 expression is not differentially expressed between the different mouse model, suggesting that Bim is implicated in mcDC proportion regulation via a caspase-independent pathway. Together, these data demonstrate that Bim, encoded within the Idd13 locus on the chromosome 2 modulates the number of mcDC. Identifying factors that facilitate apoptosis of mcDC may help prevent autoimmunity. Still, whether restoring Bim expression in NOD mice would prevent T1D remains to be addressed.

Although helpful to tumor clearance, reversing T cell anergy is detrimental in autoimmunity. Interestingly, mcDC are present in higher proportion in type 1 diabetes (T1D)-prone NOD mice than in B6 mice. Still, little is known about the immunological properties of mcDC that define them as a DC subset. Phenotypic characterization of mcDC revealed that they express the cDC-restricted transcription factor, Zbtb46. Moreover, we found that mcDC are potent inducers of mixed lymphocyte reactions, a key trait defining them as cDC. Investigation of other transcription factors associated with specific cDC functions, such as Irf4 and Irf8, reveal that mcDC are heterogeneous, with phenotypic and functional characteristics more closely resembling CD8α cDC. Comparative gene profiles by principal component analysis revealed that mcDC clustered more closley to CD8α cDC than other DC subsets. Still, mcDC are distinct from CD8α cDC, as mcDC are present in Batf3-deficient mice. Together, these data demonstrate that mcDC are a cDC subset with unique ability to break antigen specific tolerance. Understanding the homeostatic regulation of this new cDC subset will permit to develop new therapies for diseases, such as autoimmunity or cancer where they can be either pathogenic or beneficial.

Abstract:
Flax is an important Canadian crop that contains a large percentage of fatty acids (FAs) by seed weight. Gas chromatography (GC) methods have traditionally been used to study FA distributions in oil seed crops. These methods, however, require sample preparation involving saponification and methyl ester formation. Recently, 1H NMR has been shown to be an excellent way to directly measure FA distributions in edible oils using a nondestructive and experimentally faster methodology. As such, we have examined the FA profiles in developing bolls of flax cultivar AC McDuff using 1H NMR and assessed the effect of cooking on FA stability and distribution. The data confirmed the high percentage of linolenic acid in mature AC McDuff flax seed compared to early stages of development and showed that FAs at early stages of boll development are more prone to thermal degradation. Triacylglycerol was found to be important to FA stability to heat. It was also observed that the FAs did not convert from cis to trans under the cooking process used herein. The usefulness of 1H NMR spectroscopy in oils chemistry is highlighted.

PurposeTo find a radiographic method that best correlates with the mean subaxial cervical space available for the cord (MSCSAC) by using a fixed size parameter as radiographic reference, in contrast to the use of vertebral bodies as reference in the mean subaxial cervical Torg ratio (MTorg).MethodsThe study was approved by an institutional review board and written informed consent was obtained. Radiographs and cervical neck MRI were obtained from 18 male rugby athletes (age 18–30 years). Rheumatic disease, symptomatic cervical orthopaedic disease and previous cervical injury were used as exclusion criteria. MSCSAC and MTorg were calculated for each individual as the space available for the cord and Torg ratio averages from C3 to C6, respectively. A new radiographic method, using a metal bar as a size parameter (the corrected diameter of the cervical canal - CDCC), was also calculated for each individual, as well as its average from C3 to C6 (mean corrected diameter of the cervical canal - MCDCC). Values obtained for MCDCC and MTorg were correlated with those obtained by the MSCSAC using Pearson’s coefficient.ResultsFour volunteers were excluded due to previous cervical injury. In total, 14 subjects had their radiographs and MRIs analysed. Pearson’s correlation between MSCSAC and MTorg was 0.5706 (p=0.033). The correlation between MSCSAC and MCDCC was 0.6903 (p=0.006).ConclusionMCDCC correlates better than MTorg with MSCSAC and may be a better radiographic option than MTorg for cervical stenosis evaluation.

Abstract:
Aims: To evaluate the usefulness of the cyst-to-kidney volume ratio determined by ultrasonography (US) in unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) in children.Material and methods: Our study group included 21 children (average age: 431 days) with unilateral MCDK and 22 children (average age: 440 days) with unilateral grade IV hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction as the control group. All the children underwent transabdominal US. In children with MCDK, we calculated cyst-to-kidney volume ratios (volume of the largest cyst/volume of the MCDK) and in the control group the volume ratios of the renal pelvis and the largest calyx (volume of the pelvis or largest calyx/volume of the ipsilateral hydronephrotic kidney). Ellipsoid formula was used to calculate kidney and pelvis volumes. Sphere volume formula was used to calculate the largest cyst and calyx volumes. Results: The mean cyst-to-kidney volume ratio (0.38±0.21) was significantly higher than the mean volume ratios of the renal pelvises (0.10±0.05) and the largest calyces (0.04±0.02) (p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between cyst-to-kidney volume ratio and the ages of the children (r=0.141, p=0.541).Conclusions: With the aid of both the qualitative sonographic criteria and the newer data that we have proposed, US is a useful tool in the initial diagnosis of MCDK and for differentiation of MCDKs from grade IV hydronephrotic kidneys in children. The cyst-tokidney volume ratio is independent of age and thus, it can be helpful in the diagnosis of unilateral MCDK at any age.

Abstract:
Multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is a renal dysplasia characterized by the presence of multiple cysts that are non-communicating, varying in size, separated by dysplastic parenchyma that consume the renal cortex resulting in a non-functional kidney with the absence of a normal pelvocaliceal system. The incidence of MCDK is approximately 1 : 4300 of live births, with males being affected more often than females. Many concurrent urinary tract abnormalities have been described in patients with MCDK. The most common and potentially significant urologic defect seen is vesico-ureteral reflux to the contralateral kidney. In our clinical case, multicystic dysplastic kidney complicated by hydronephrotic transformation and septic obstructive pyelonephritis, which developed on the base of undiagnosed vasorenal conflict.

AbsractIn this paper, it is shown that any connected, small category can be embedded in a semi-groupoid (a category in which there is at least one isomorphism between any two elements) in such a way that the embedding includes a homotopy equivalence of classifying spaces. This immediately gives a monoid whose classifying space is of the same homotopy type as that of the small category. This construction is essentially algorithmic, and furthermore, yields a finitely presented monoid whenever the small category is finitely presented. Some of these results are generalizations of ideas of McDuff.

Abstract:
Let [Formula: see text] be a closed symplectic manifold of volume [Formula: see text]. We say that the symplectic packings of [Formula: see text] by balls are unobstructed if any collection of disjoint symplectic balls (of possibly different radii) of total volume less than [Formula: see text] admits a symplectic embedding to [Formula: see text]. In 1994, McDuff and Polterovich proved that symplectic packings of Kähler manifolds by balls can be characterized in terms of the Kähler cones of their blow-ups. When [Formula: see text] is a Kähler manifold which is not a union of its proper subvarieties (such a manifold is called Campana simple), these Kähler cones can be described explicitly using the Demailly and Paun structure theorem. We prove that for any Campana simple Kähler manifold, as well as for any manifold which is a limit of Campana simple manifolds in a smooth deformation, the symplectic packings by balls are unobstructed. This is used to show that the symplectic packings by balls of all even-dimensional tori equipped with Kähler symplectic forms and of all hyper-Kähler manifolds of maximal holonomy are unobstructed. This generalizes a previous result by Latschev–McDuff–Schlenk. We also consider symplectic packings by other shapes and show, using Ratner’s orbit closure theorem, that any even-dimensional torus equipped with a Kähler form whose cohomology class is not proportional to a rational one admits a full symplectic packing by any number of equal polydisks (and, in particular, by any number of equal cubes).

Abstract:
Background: To assess multicystic dysplastic kidneys (MCDK) in children, their complications and associated congenital genitourinary anomalies. Methods: Children with unilateral MCDK, evaluated between 2012 and 2020, were analyzed. In this retrospective study, data were obtained from electronic and paper health care records. Results: There were 80 children included. Follow-up time was 8.0 +/− 5 years (mean +/− standard deviation). None of them had hypertension. In total, 43.8% of the children had associated congenital genitourinary anomalies, most commonly cryptorchidism and vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), and 6.3% of these children had chromosomopathy. All of them had normal kidney function except one child with dysplasia of the contralateral kidney. Urinalysis was normal in 90% of children. Extrarenal malformations occurred in 22.5% of them. We observed spontaneous involution of MCDK in 38.8% of children in the observed period. Nephrectomy was performed in 12.5% of children, at an average age of 2.0 years. Conclusions: Children with a unilateral MCDK have a very good prognosis if the contralateral kidney is normal. Associated congenital genitourinary anomalies are common. Cryptorchidism was found to be the most common associated anomaly among boys, which is unique for this study. Most of these children do not suffer from hypertension, kidney dysfunction or other complications.

Abstract:
In a letter to Vietnam War veteran Charles McDuff, Major General Franklin Davis, Jr. said, "The United States Army has never condoned wanton killing or disregard for human life." McDuff had written a letter to President Richard Nixon in January 1971, telling him that he had witnessed U.S. soldiers abusing and killing Vietnamese civilians and informing him that many My Lais had taken place during the war. He pleaded with Nixon to bring the killing to an end. The White House sent the letter to the general, and this was his reply.&hellp; McDuff's letter and Davis's response are quoted in Nick Turse's <em>Kill Anything That Moves: The Real American War in Vietnam</em>, the most recent book to demonstrate beyond doubt that the general's words were a lie.&hellp; In what follows, I use Turse's work, along with several other books, articles, and films, as scaffolds from which to construct an analysis of how the war was conducted, what its consequences have been for the Vietnamese, how the nature of the war generated ferocious opposition to it (not least by a brave core of U.S. soldiers), how the war's history has been whitewashed, and why it is important to both know what happened in Vietnam and why we should not forget it.<p class="mrlink"><p class="mrpurchaselink"><a href="http://monthlyreview.org/index/volume-67-number-1" title="Vol. 67, No. 1: May 2015" target="_self">Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the <em>Monthly Review</em> website.</a></p>

Abstract:
An ergodic probability measure preserving (p.m.p.) equivalence relation ${\mathcal{R}}$ is said to be stable if ${\mathcal{R}}\cong {\mathcal{R}}\times {\mathcal{R}}_{0}$ where ${\mathcal{R}}_{0}$ is the unique hyperfinite ergodic type $\text{II}_{1}$ equivalence relation. We prove that a direct product ${\mathcal{R}}\times {\mathcal{S}}$ of two ergodic p.m.p. equivalence relations is stable if and only if one of the two components ${\mathcal{R}}$ or ${\mathcal{S}}$ is stable. This result is deduced from a new local characterization of stable equivalence relations. The similar question on McDuff $\text{II}_{1}$ factors is also discussed and some partial results are given.

Abstract:
This contribution consists of a correspondence between a postdoctoral English literature scholar and poet, Tara Bergin, and a Russian and English literature scholar, Marina Tsvetkova, who initially set out to write an essay comparing two translations of Tsvetaeva's poem of May 1934, called ‘Homesickness’ by Elaine Feinstein and ‘Longing for the Motherland’ by David McDuff. Their letters focus on this poem but also venture into Tsvetaeva's biography and some of her other writings. Eventually it seemed to them appropriate to submit for publication the correspondence itself, following which the material was given a detailed reading by a third Tsvetaeva translator, Christopher Whyte. His comments are also published here, with a postscript from the two correspondents.

AbstractThis paper studies the following question: Given an ω′-symplectic action of a Lie group on a manifoldMwhich coincides, as a smooth action, with a Hamiltonian ω-action, when is this action a Hamiltonian ω′-action? Using a result of Morse-Bott theory presented in Section 2, we show in Section 3 of this paper that such an action is in fact a Hamiltonian ω′-action, provided thatM is compact and that the Lie group is compact and connected. This result was first proved by Lalonde-McDuff-Polterovich in 1999 as a consequence of a more general theory that made use of hard geometric analysis. In this paper, we prove it using classical methods only.

Let Δ be a Delzant polytope in ℝn and b∈ℤn. Let E denote the symplectic fibration over S2 determined by the pair (Δ,b). Under certain hypotheses, we prove the equivalence between the fact that (Δ,b) is a mass linear pair (McDuff and Tolman, 2010) and the vanishing of a characteristic number of E. Denoting by Ham(MΔ), the Hamiltonian group of the symplectic manifold defined by Δ, we determine loops in Ham(MΔ) that define infinite cyclic subgroups in π1(Ham(MΔ)) when Δ satisfies any of the following conditions: (i) it is the trapezium associated with a Hirzebruch sur-face, (ii) it is a Δp bundle over Δ1, and (iii) Δ is the truncated simplex associated with the one point blowup of ℂPn.

Abstract:
Mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) designed and studied a video analysis activity intended to support prospective teachers (PSTs) in learning to notice equitable instructional practices. PSTs from 4 sites (N = 73) engaged in the activity 4 to 5 times during the semester, using a set of 4 “lenses” to analyze teaching and learning as shown in videos. In an earlier analysis of this activity, we found that PSTs increased their depth and expanded their foci in noticing equitable instructional practices (Roth McDuf_ e et al., 2013). In this analysis, we shift the focus to our work as MTEs: We examine our decisions and moves in facilitating the video analysis activity with a focus on equity, and we discuss implications for other MTEs.
