Abstract:
SummaryPercy Corbett and John Humphrey were two leading figures in international law at McGill University and in Canada. The author traces the career of Corbett and Humphrey at McGill and illustrates the influence that Corbett had on Humphrey, who had been Corbett's student, both at McGill and later in life. The author not only provides insight into the relationship of these remarkable men but also provides a picture of the teaching of law and international law at McGill University during a particularly important period of that institution.

Abstract:
Abstract The Department of Biochemistry at McGill University was inaugurated close to a century after the Medical School was founded. The roots of the Department, however, can be found at the very beginning of the Medical School in 1829. Because several of the founding faculty members of the Medical School were educated in Edinburgh, McGill's early medical program bore the imprint of the Edinburgh school-particularly in the importance placed on instruction in chemistry and on basic research. This survey of the development of a university department is structured on the succession of department chairs, and describes how the Department's scientific, pedagogical, and administrative activities were influenced by the particular abilities and dispositions of the individuals who were at the helm. It explains how the growth of external research institutes influenced the Department's evolution, and cites some of the noteworthy contributions of its members.

Abstract:
The campaign to divest the endowment of McGill University from fossil fuel has had amazing success in using scientific knowledge to inspire democratic action. Organizations collectively representing all students and academic staff, and most non-academic staff, have voted overwhelmingly in favor of divestment. There is one small problem, however. Unlike Oxford or Cambridge, where a majority vote among all faculty would be the final word about any and all university policy, McGill suffers rule by a plutocratic Board of Governors. This impairment parallels and connects with the stranglehold the fossil fuel industry has on Canadian environmental policy.

Abstract:
In the 150 years between the time Sir William Dawson was lecturing on the diseases of fruit trees and vegetables, in 1856, and the plant pathology lectures given by Ajjamanda Kushalappa, in 2006, more than 29 members of the teaching staff at McGill University have given lectures that included significant amounts of plant pathology information. These were both men and women, at all academic levels, from lecturer to full professor, and on both campuses of McGill University. Their history shows that they have played a major role in Canadian plant pathology.

Abstract:
It is often debated if medical electives are beneficial for students. While medical electives are not mandatory for students in the developing world, they are an important part of medical training in some Western universities (UCSD School of Medicine, n.d.) and have been part of UK undergraduate training since the 1970s (Cruikshank & Walsh, 1980). In the West medical schools form committees to guide, counsel, and help students plan their electives during vacations. In South Asia, the concept of electives is minimally encouraged; however, the students themselves share their elective experience and encourage other students to take electives, mostly through online forums. Electives often provide students a chance to work in a different setup, with different disease prevalence patterns, hospital management protocols, and learning experiences under various doctors with diverse problem solving approaches. It is also a two pronged tool whereby students can enhance their clinical skills and find opportunities to obtain a research project under the mentorship of research oriented academic consultants. This article is a brief sketch of experiences encountered by a South Asian medical student on a clerkship elective rotation in cardiology at a tertiary care hospital in Canada.

Abstract:
Objective. The undergraduate medical curriculum has been overcrowded with core learning outcomes with no formal exposure to plastic surgery. The aim of this study was to compare medical students from two educational settings for the basic understanding, preferred learning method, and factors influencing a career choice in plastic surgery. Design and Setting. A prospective cohort study based on a web-based anonymous questionnaire sent to final year medical students at Birmingham University (United Kingdom), McGill University (Canada), and a control group (non-medical staff). The questions were about plastic surgery: (1) source of information and basic understanding; (2) undergraduate curriculum inclusion and preferred learning methods; (3) factors influencing a career choice. A similar questionnaire was sent to non-medical staff (control group). The data was analysed based on categorical outcomes (Chi-square χ2) and level of significance p≤0.05. Results. Questionnaire was analysed for 243 students (Birmingham, n=171/332, 52%) (McGill n=72/132, 54%). Birmingham students (14%) considered the word “plastic” synonymous with “cosmetic” more than McGill students (4%, p<0.025). Teaching was the main source of knowledge for McGill students (39%, p<0.001) while Birmingham students and control group chose the media (70%, p<0.001). McGill students (67%) more than Birmingham (49%, p<0.010) considered curriculum inclusion. The preferred learning method was lectures for McGill students (61%, p<0.01) but an optional module for Birmingham (61%). A similar proportion (18%) from both student groups considered a career in plastic surgery. Conclusions. Medical students recognised the need for plastic surgery inclusion in the undergraduate curriculum. There was a difference for plastic surgery source of information, operations, and preferred method of learning for students. The study highlighted the urgent need to reform plastic surgery undergraduate teaching in collaboration with national educational bodies worldwide.

Abstract:
Promoting fathers’ mental health and involvement Promoting fathers’ mental health and father involvement – a call to action is given here by Deborah Da Costa, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the Department of Medicine, McGill University, and Scientist at McGill University Health Centre. Up to 1 in 10 fathers struggle with mental health difficulties during their partner’s pregnancy and/or the first year following the birth of their child. Depression is among the most commonly experienced mental health difficulties for fathers during this life stage. The use of a gender lens is important to recognize the signs of depression in men, as they can exhibit symptoms differently compared to women.

Abstract:
When Casey Wood became William Osler’s first clinical clerk at the Montreal General Hospital in 1877, it would have been impossible to foresee the impact that pairing would have on collections development at the McGill University Library. Osler inspired Wood’s bibliophilia and guided him to focus his collecting, resulting in the establishment of specialised collections: on ophthalmology within the Medical Library and on ornithology and zoology within the McGill University Library. Although Casey Wood’s gifts to the Osler Library were limited and carefully selected during his lifetime, after his death the ophthalmological collection was transferred to the Osler Library of the History of Medicine, along with other works relating to medicine. These books, combined with documentation contained within a number of archival collections at the Osler Library, mean that Casey Wood can truly claim to have an enduring presence in the Osler Library. While the books speak to part of Wood’s legacy at McGill, the archival documentation speaks to his character: as a man who was determined and focused, but who also expressed racist views and fascist sympathies.
