Abstract:
When Terence McKenna and his brother Dennis performed the so-called “Experiment at La Chorrera” in Columbia in 1971, they staged what became one of the most legendary and storied trip tales in contemporary psychedelic culture. This paper diagrams the matrix of Jungian alchemy, Marshall McLuhan, and science fiction that underpinned the protocols and conceptual apparatus of the Experiment. These ideas are tied to McKenna’s early unpublished text Crypto-Rap, which is briefly summarized as an example of “weird naturalism.” In essence, it is argued that Terence and Dennis McKenna “esotericized” media theory into an occult apparatus of resonance, sympathy, and apocalyptic ontology.

Abstract:
Antony McKenna has argued that Pascal has been misunderstood as a "Christian Pyrrhonist" when he is in fact an Academic sceptic. He holds Pascal's scepticism to be a negative dogmatism and Christian Pyrrhonism to be a contradiction in terms and thus useless as a category of intellectual history. This essay argues that McKenna's reading of Pascal is unsustainable and that his assault on the notion of Christian Pyrrhonism is based on a mistaken conception of what constitutes "true" Pyrrhonism. In fact, it argues that McKenna's Pyrrhonism is actually a form of Academicism and that Pascal himself understood the difference between these ancient schools more accurately.

Abstract:
This article discusses the relationship between inner space (the mind/consciousness) and perceptions of outer space (the extraterrestrial) in Western psychedelic cultures. In particular, it analyses the writings and lectures of Terence McKenna, the most influential psychedelic thinker since the 1960s. Assimilating a broad range of ideas taken from esotericism, shamanism, and science fiction, McKenna became the principal architect of an occult theory of psychedelic experiences referred to here as psychedelic ufology. The article further argues that McKenna was formatively influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung and that, as such, much subsequent psychedelic ufology tends to be Jungian.

Abstract:
The McKenna reaction is a well-known and popular method for the efficient and mild synthesis of organophosphorus acids. Bromotrimethylsilane (BTMS) is the main reagent in this reaction, which transforms dialkyl phosphonate esters into bis(trimethylsilyl)esters, which are then easily converted into the target acids. However, the versatile character of the McKenna reaction is not always used to its full extent, due to formation of side products. Herein, demonstrated by using model examples we have not only analyzed the typical side processes accompanying the McKenna reaction, but also uncovered new ones. Further, we discovered that some commonly recommended precautions did not always circumvent the side reactions. The proposed results and recommendations may facilitate the synthesis of phosphonic acids.

Abstract:
College admission has become increasingly competitive in the internet era. This is especially true for the highest caliber of students and institutions. College admission is a process filled with asymmetric information. One of the biggest asymmetries occurs when schools admit students not knowing whether or not students will actually enroll. This uncertainty is economically costly to schools. As national rankings become more and more influential, schools are more sensitive to their rank and the statistics that determine them. One of these is yield, the percentage of admitted students who enroll. This paper examines data on admitted students to Claremont McKenna College and uses a probit regression to predict their enrollment decision. By successfully predicting enrollment decisions schools can eliminate some information asymmetry and therefore raise their yield.

Abstract:
This thesis observes sustainability on college campuses, specifically examining Claremont Mckenna College (CMC) as a case study. The question that this research paper explores is: how can we apply an integrative approach, one that integrates biophysical, economic, and social factors, to sustainability at CMC? The objectives of this paper are to (1) outline the history of sustainability on college campuses in the U.S. and define an integrative approach through a review of current literature; (2) explore CMC’s past and current sustainability initiatives from policies, reports, events, and interviews; (3) capture various community members’ perspectives on campus sustainability through surveys and interviews with students, faculty, and staff members; and (4) discuss the barriers and areas that need work at CMC and how an integrative approach can be applied as a solution. Thus, this thesis will track CMC’s progress in sustainability and give feedback as to the areas of success and areas that require work according to a working integrative framework.

Abstract:
Fondecyt regular 1180526, Fondecyt regular 1140311 y CMM Conicyt PIA AFB170001

Havlicek, James H. "Say Goodbye to Hollywood: The Performance Discrepancy of Franchise Films between the Domestic and Foreign Box Office." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2014. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/898.

Full text
Abstract:
The increasing globalization of entertainment appears to be having a major impact on the dynamics of the American film industry. The U.S. box office is no longer predominant, meaning that in order to most effectively capitalize on the state of the theatrical market, domestic studios must now more heavily incorporate foreign preferences into production strategy. This study explores the financial nuances of the global box office in relation to sequel-driven film franchises, which have seemingly come to dominate commercial filmmaking as a result of their risk-minimized profitability. We focus on discrepancies between foreign and domestic performance in order to analyze the potential motivations behind the shifts in Hollywood’s output. Using OLS and Probit regression models with a variety of dependent and independent variables, this study finds that sequels tend to perform both relatively and absolutely better overseas, that certain genres are received differently abroad than in the U.S., and that the approval of latter sequels tends to be driven more by foreign revenue generated by previous films within franchises.

Basso, Ann Mccauley. "The Portia Project: The Heiress of Belmont on Stage and Screen." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3000.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Until now, there has not been a performance history of The Merchant of Venice that focuses on Portia, the main character of the play. Although she has the most lines, the most stage time, and represents the nexus of the action, Portia has often been hidden in Shylock's shadow, and this dissertation seeks to bring her into the spotlight. The Portia Project is a contribution to literary and theatrical history; its primary goal is to provide a tool for scholars and teachers. Moreover, because of Merchant's notoriously problematic nature, the play invites different perspectives. By presenting the diverse ways that actors and directors have approached the play and resolved the cruxes associated with Portia, I aim to demonstrate that there are multiple valid ways in which to interpret the text. Chapter one explores the literary criticism of The Merchant of Venice, centering on the treatment of the play's female protagonist. The early twentieth century produced wide-ranging interpretations of Portia, and the last fifty years have seen her analyzed through the lenses of feminism, cultural materialism, psychoanalytic criticism, and queer theory. Having analyzed the literary criticism, I next concentrate on the performance history of The Merchant of Venice, with particular attention to Portia. I then turn to those who have performed the role in a wide-range of theatrical venues. Chapter three features the input of Seana McKenna--star of the Canadian stage and a mainstay of the Stratford Festival in Ontario--who played Portia in a 1989 production. Michael Langham directed in an atmosphere of trepidation over the play's reception and its portrayal of Shylock's forced conversion. For chapter four I interviewed Marni Penning, a veteran of the smaller repertory companies that are sprinkled about the United States. For chapter five I talked to Edward Hall, artistic director of the all-male Propeller Theatre Company, and Kelsey Brookfield, a young black actor who played Portia for the group's 2009 production. By dressing all of the "male" characters alike, Hall de-emphasized the differences between the Christians and the Jews, while Portia, Nerissa, and Jessica were presented not as women, but as men, who have feminized themselves to survive in their harsh environment. Lily Rabe played Portia for the 2010 production of Merchant in Central Park, opposite Al Pacino's Shylock. The production was so successful that it moved to Broadway in October of that year, and Rabe's intelligent portrayal won universal accolades. The Portia Project explores the perceptions of literary critics, theatrical reviewers, actors, and directors, in order to ascertain how representations and expectations of Shakespeare's most learned heroine have changed over the years and to rescue her from Shylock's shadow. By combining the disciplines of literary criticism, theatre, and film, an evolving picture of Portia emerges, revealing Portia's complexity and her centrality to The Merchant of Venice.

Abstract:
Henry McKenna was shipping whiskey to markets across Kentucky and to a diverse customer base of individuals, retailers, and wholesalers in the South, Middle West, Great Plains, and mountain West by the 1870s, primarily by rail. His sons were active in company management by 1881, and they established a sales and shipping office in Louisville. Customers often specified their interest in “aged whiskey.” The McKennas developed a comprehensive marketing program that included sales to hotels and restaurants; they advertised in professional medical journals and in circulars displayed in railroad passenger cars. The distillery’s logo included two ancient Irish symbols: the Irish harp and the winged Maiden of Eire. Representatives displayed McKenna’s product at medical conventions and directed ads to the medicinal whiskey market. Patrons in dry states and counties used McKenna’s mail-order service extensively. The McKennas did not strive to operate a high-capacity industrial distillery but remained committed to supporting their local community.

Abstract:
Irish immigrant Henry McKenna established a mill and distillery at Fairfield in Nelson County in the early 1850s. In 1860 McKenna’s household included three Irish boarders, one of whom, Patrick Sweeney, became the distiller. McKenna began acquiring farmland in the 1850s and accumulated more than 1,000 acres, becoming a “strong farmer,” in the idiom of Ireland. McKenna milled grain and sold flour to local patrons as well as retailers in Bardstown and Louisville. His low-production distillery served a similar clientele. He maintained more than 350 customer accounts, selling flour, meal, and whiskey on credit. He bought farmers’ grains, wood, wool, and garden produce, crediting their accounts. Although his first still was handmade of poplar logs, McKenna improved and expanded his works, which by 1878 was mashing 200 bushels of grain per day. Some of his Irish employees, earning only a modest wage, supported the Fenian Brotherhood and sent donations to the “poor of Ireland.”

Abstract:
Abstract Primary energy sources for aviation gas turbines as well as direct-injection gasoline and diesel engines come in the form of liquid hydrocarbon fuels. These liquid fuels are atomized and mixed with air, prior to highly turbulent combustion and heat release processes inside engine hardware. Designing more efficient and cleaner gas turbine engines is hence dependent on the in-depth understanding of spray formation, mixing, heat release, combustion dynamics, and pollutant formation pathways in liquid-fuel spray flames. As compared to gaseous fuels, the additional steps of atomization, dispersion, and evaporation prior to turbulent mixing need to be considered for a variety of liquid fuels to enable fuel-flexible operation of these combustion hardware. Such studies can be largely facilitated by advanced laser diagnostics applied to simplified piloted liquid-spray flame configurations that can also be numerically modeled using well-defined boundary conditions. In this work, a modified configuration of a fuel-flexible piloted liquid-spray flame apparatus is used for detailed laser diagnostics studies using hydroxyl (OH) planar imaging. The configuration consists of a modified McKenna flat-flame burner fitted with a direct-injection high-efficiency nebulizer. OH radical is a primary marker of the reaction zone and a key indicator of the heat release process in flames. OH is abundant in the high-temperature combustion regions providing high signal-to-noise ratio single-laser-shot images revealing flame dynamics and instabilities. Therefore, OH planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) is employed to characterize the dynamic structures of a range of piloted liquid-spray flames operated with methanol (CH3OH), n-Heptane (C7H16), iso-Octane (C8H18), dodecane (C12H26), gasoline (C4–C12), diesel (C12–C20), and kerosene (C6–C16). Single-shot and averaged OH-PLIF images show the presence of strong turbulence in the core region above the surface of the McKenna burner. The reaction zone mainly occurs around the periphery of this region, then it spreads more uniformly due to evaporation of liquid droplets downstream of the spray flame. Two-color OH PLIF thermometry in liquid spray flames operated with gasoline, diesel and kerosene, has been shown that the combustion temperature is in the range of 1200–2000 K. Overall, OH PLIF has been demonstrated to be an efficient approach for dynamic structures and temperature measurements in piloted liquid-spray flames operated with realistic fuels.

Abstract:
Abstract Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydroxyl (OH) are the two key intermediate species formed during chemical reactions inside gas turbine combustors. Spatiotemporal information and a detailed understanding of CO formation in the reaction zone are important during the combustion processes as a major part of the heat release is obtained from the oxidation of CO to CO2. Turbulent flame structures and reaction zone in different flame conditions can also be visualized through the spatial distribution profiles of OH. In the current study, both these species are excited simultaneously using a single ultrashort, broad spectral bandwidth of approximately 100-femtosecond (fs) duration laser pulse at λ = 283.8 nm. Subsequent fluorescence signals are separated through spectral filters of appropriate bandwidth and imaged using two cameras. This present study was performed in a McKenna flat-flame burner with ethylene/air as a pilot flame and non-premixed turbulent ethylene jet at the center. The partial spectral overlap of CO–X (4,0) and OH A–X (1,0) transitions are utilized for simultaneous excitation, thereby characterize the overall flame structure (via OH) and regions of oxidation reactions (via CO) in a range of flame conditions. Besides, CO and OH profiles follow the trends obtained from model predictions for a range of equivalence ratios in ethylene/air flames stabilized over the Hencken calibration burner. These results are used for obtaining quantitative calibrations of CO and OH signals. Overall, the present study extends the applicability of a single, broadband fs laser pulse for simultaneous imaging of multiple chemical species in flame.

Abstract:
This paper presents a study of ethanol jet spray flame characteristics in a hot-diluted oxidant with different co-flow oxygen concentrations and fuel/air mass flow rate ratios (MF/MA ratios) through advance image processing technique. An air-blast atomizer was located in a McKenna burner which was utilized to provide stable combustion surroundings and variable combustion atmosphere for ethanol jet spray. The co-flow oxygen concentrations were set to 5%, 10%, 15% and 21% (by volume) by adjusting the mass flow rates of CH4, O2 and N2. The MF/MA ratios were set to 0.245, 0.490, 0.735, and 0.980 by adjusting the fuel mass flow rate and the carrier air mass flow rate. A high-speed RGB CCD camera was employed to capture spray flame images continuously. Spray flame edge is detected using an auto-adaptive edge-detection algorithm which could detect the spray flame edge continuously and clearly. A flame zone is defined as the region surrounded by the detected flame edge to obtain flame parameters. Spray flame characteristics are described using the measured flame parameters, involving flame area, length, brightness, nonuniformity and temperature which are derived from the spray flame images. Spray flame area, length, brightness and nonuniformity are extracted through image processing technique directly. Moreover, two-dimensional (2D) temperature profiling of spray flame is obtained by coupling image processing technique with two-color pyrometry based on Planck’s radiation law. The effects of co-flow oxygen concentration and MF/MA ratio on spray flame characteristics are investigated in this work. The spray flame parameters are observed to be sensitive to both co-flow oxygen concentration and MF/MA ratio. The results show that the fuel mass flow rate (MF) has opposite effects on spray flame characteristics compared with the carrier air mass flow rate (MA) in hot-diluted oxidant. Spray flame area and length are shown to decrease for higher co-flow oxygen concentrations, while spray flame brightness, uniformity and temperature are observed to increase for higher co-flow oxygen concentrations, owing to the enhancement of the combustion rate. A higher MF/MA ratio leads to higher spray flame area, length, brightness, uniformity and temperature, due to the increase of the droplet residence time or droplet concentration in hot-diluted oxidant. In the same MF/MA ratio, spray flame area and length are found to be smaller at a higher fuel flow rate (or carrier air flow rate). However, spray flame brightness, uniformity and temperature are demonstrated to be enhanced at a higher fuel flow rate (or carrier air flow rate). (CSPE)

Abstract:
Recovery-orientated practice is a challenge for nurses working within acute mental health wards (McKenna et al., 2014). Although the experience and meaning of recovery-focused care varied, there were common elements in the practice accounts. The undergraduate nurse’s role in creating different therapeutic spaces to promote safety, relational commitment, and healing for service users was paramount to supporting the service user’s recovery journey (Waldemar et al, 2016). The importance of building safe, committed and healing relationships to ensure the psychological safety of service users was highlighted within this study, and how worthwhile it is for nurses to let go, to a certain extent, of the traditional boundaries that may create barriers to building recovery. There has been growing concern that people accessing mental health services are not receiving an inclusive, recovery-focused service due to barriers that include health professionals’ attitudes, skills and knowledge in practice. By exploring the experience and meaning of recovery-oriented practice for ten nurses working with service users in an acute mental health inpatient service in Aotearoa New Zealand, this study aimed to understand how nurses experience practising recovery in clinical practice, and to transfer the outcomes of the findings to enable lecturers to teach undergraduate nurses recovery-oriented practice skills to support mental health service users. Individual interviews were undertaken with participants and data analysed through a phenomenological and hermeneutic lens. The study findings could be used to inform best practice and changes to the nursing curriculum to inform and provide a platform to enable integrating recovery-orientated practice into the core mental health undergraduate curriculum (Haywood et al., 2020). This is conducive not only to recovery, but, essentially, to building a future nursing workforce that is appropriately skilled, equipped, supported and resourced for recovery-oriented practice (Solomon et al., 2021). Building safe, committed or shared space and healing relationships, and creating psychological safety, are crucial determinants of safe and effective care in mental health; and have implications for how nurses learn to manage new ways of working alongside service users and integrate recovery oriented practice within the reality and challenges of practice (Jackson-Blott et al., 2019). Highlighted within the research is the importance of education for both post- and undergraduate nurses regarding providing therapeutic safe spaces as an integral part of the service user’s recovery journey and undergraduate nurses’ learning. This study contributes key insights that are encapsulated in three core elements within relational space provision; these include safe, shared and healing spaces. This provides the key steps for providing a therapeutic safe space, as well as the tools and skills that should be integrated into education for undergraduate nurses. It is important that psychological and therapeutic safety is taught and woven through the entire three-year nursing degree course, as it has significant implications for mental health recovery-focused education in undergraduate student nurses. It can inform practice and support nursing students within clinical placement to more effectively work with mental health service users.
