Abstract:
When Terence McKenna and his brother Dennis performed the so-called “Experiment at La Chorrera” in Columbia in 1971, they staged what became one of the most legendary and storied trip tales in contemporary psychedelic culture. This paper diagrams the matrix of Jungian alchemy, Marshall McLuhan, and science fiction that underpinned the protocols and conceptual apparatus of the Experiment. These ideas are tied to McKenna’s early unpublished text Crypto-Rap, which is briefly summarized as an example of “weird naturalism.” In essence, it is argued that Terence and Dennis McKenna “esotericized” media theory into an occult apparatus of resonance, sympathy, and apocalyptic ontology.

Abstract:
Antony McKenna has argued that Pascal has been misunderstood as a "Christian Pyrrhonist" when he is in fact an Academic sceptic. He holds Pascal's scepticism to be a negative dogmatism and Christian Pyrrhonism to be a contradiction in terms and thus useless as a category of intellectual history. This essay argues that McKenna's reading of Pascal is unsustainable and that his assault on the notion of Christian Pyrrhonism is based on a mistaken conception of what constitutes "true" Pyrrhonism. In fact, it argues that McKenna's Pyrrhonism is actually a form of Academicism and that Pascal himself understood the difference between these ancient schools more accurately.

Full text
Abstract:
This article discusses the relationship between inner space (the mind/consciousness) and perceptions of outer space (the extraterrestrial) in Western psychedelic cultures. In particular, it analyses the writings and lectures of Terence McKenna, the most influential psychedelic thinker since the 1960s. Assimilating a broad range of ideas taken from esotericism, shamanism, and science fiction, McKenna became the principal architect of an occult theory of psychedelic experiences referred to here as psychedelic ufology. The article further argues that McKenna was formatively influenced by the ideas of Carl Jung and that, as such, much subsequent psychedelic ufology tends to be Jungian.

Full text
Abstract:
The McKenna reaction is a well-known and popular method for the efficient and mild synthesis of organophosphorus acids. Bromotrimethylsilane (BTMS) is the main reagent in this reaction, which transforms dialkyl phosphonate esters into bis(trimethylsilyl)esters, which are then easily converted into the target acids. However, the versatile character of the McKenna reaction is not always used to its full extent, due to formation of side products. Herein, demonstrated by using model examples we have not only analyzed the typical side processes accompanying the McKenna reaction, but also uncovered new ones. Further, we discovered that some commonly recommended precautions did not always circumvent the side reactions. The proposed results and recommendations may facilitate the synthesis of phosphonic acids.

Full text
Abstract:
Cylindrical bark beetles (subfamily Colydiinae) have a long and convoluted taxonomic history which has led to much confusion in their nomenclature and phylogeny (summarized in Ivie et al., 2016). In the past they have been treated as a separate family within the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. However, taxonomic studies have placed them as sister to the Zopherinae within the Zopheridae (Ślipiński & Lawrence, 1999). Phylogenetic analyses are inconclusive on this relationship with some supporting (McKenna et al., 2019) and others providing evidence against (Hunt et al., 2007; McKenna et al., 2015; McKenna et al., 2019) this hypothesis (although low taxon sampling may play a role in this discordance). Even the monophyly of the Colydiinae within the Zopheridae is suspect (Lawrence et al., 2011; Ivie et al., 2016) as they possess no convincing morphological synapomorphies. The tribe Synchitini in particular is the largest in the Colydiinae with 115 genera of mainly mycophagous or detritivorous beetles inhabiting rotting wood, under bark, or leaf-litter habitats (Ivie, 2002). This tribe may be paraphyletic with respect to the other colydiine tribes, and as with the broader subfamily, requires much phylogenetic work to clarify these relationships (Ivie, 2002).

Abstract:
I have the great pleasure to be the citationist for presentation of the 1992 Paleontological Society Medal to Dr. Malcolm C. McKenna. Malcolm McKenna has had a profound influence on our profession, both as a research scientist and a mentor. He is one of the most broadly trained and interested scientists I know, and he has a consuming passion for learning. He loves all aspects of paleontology—field work, literature, laboratory analysis of specimens, theory, even fossil preparation (in his enthusiasm to uncover critical specimens, or trusting only himself to perform delicate preparation of unique fossils). Malcolm has never been afraid to propose controversial ideas, to change his mind when wrong, to tackle problems that others consider insoluble, or to incorporate new scientific techniques in his work before others realize their significance.

The paper deals with superlinear elliptic boundary value problems depending on a parameter.
