The subject of computer Go is an active eld under AI and has achieved much attention in research. The current state of the art computer Go im-plementations uses a game tree search approach rather than advanced heuristics. This thesis aims to bridge these two approaches and combineMonte Carlo Tree Search with heuristics to deduce if any general results can be found. The results of the thesis indicate that the performance of a combined MCTS-heuristic approach correlates strongly with performance of the heuristic. Furthermore, MCTS can be used with any heuristic to improve its performance.1

MCDS is an autosomal dominant skeletal dysplasia disorder caused by mutations in collagen X. In most cases, mutations in collagen X result in a misfolded protein which is retained within the ER of hypertrophic chondrocytes, causing increased ER stress. It has previously been demonstrated that increased ER stress causes hypertrophic chondrocytes to de-differentiate in an attempt to avoid the stress. We introduce our competitive implementation of a Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) algorithm for the board game of Go: Pachi. The software is based both on previously published methods and our original improvements. We then focus on improving the tree search performance by collecting information regarding tactical situations and game status from the Monte Carlo simulations and sharing it with and within the game tree. Evolutionary and genetic algorithms are problem-solving methods designed according to a nature inspiration. They are used for solving hard problems that we cannot solve by any efficient specialized algorithm. The Monte Carlo method and its derivation the Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) are based on sampling and are also commonly used for too complex problems, where we are dealing with enormous memory consumption and it is impossible to perform a complete searching. The goal of this thesis is to design a general problem solving method that is built from these two completely different approaches.
