Abstract:
Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Mathematics, 2016.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 105-110).<br>We study singularity models of mean curvature flow ("MCF") and their generalizations. In the first part, we focus on rigidity and curvature estimates for self-shrinkers. We give a rigidity theorem proving that any self-shrinker which is graphical in a large ball must be a hyperplane. This result gives a stronger version of the Bernstein type theorem for shrinkers proved by Ecker-Huisken. One key ingredient is a curvature estimate for almost stable shrinkers. By proving curvature estimates for mean convex shrinkers, we show that any shrinker which is mean convex in a large ball must be a round cylinder. This generalizes a result by Colding-Ilmanen-Minicozzi : no curvature bound assumption is needed. This part is joint work with Jonathan Zhu. In the second part, we consider [lambda]-hypersurfaces which can be thought of as a generalization of shrinkers. We first give various gap and rigidity theorems. We then establish the Bernstein type theorem for [lambda]-hypersurfaces and classify [lambda]-curves. In the last part, we study translating solitons of MCF from four aspects: volume growth, entropy, stability, and curvature estimates. First, we show that every properly immersed translator has at least linear volume growth. Second, using Huisken's monotonicity formula, we compute the entropy of the grim reaper and the bowl solitons. Third, we estimate the spectrum of the stability operator L for translators and give a rigidity result of L-stable translators. Finally, we provide curvature estimates for L-stable translators, graphical translators and translators with small entropy.<br>by Qiang Guang.<br>Ph. D.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis addresses a critical problem in computer vision of dealing with dataset bias between source and target environments. Variations in image data can arise from multiple factors including contrasts in picture quality (shading, brightness, colour, resolution, and occlusion), diverse backgrounds, distinct circumstances, changes in camera viewpoint, and implicit heterogeneity of the samples themselves. This research developed strategies to address this domain shift problem for the object recognition task. Several domain adaptation and generalization approaches based on deep neural networks were introduced to improve poor performance due to domain shift or domain bias.

Abstract:
У процесі доведення сформульованої наукової гіпотези дослідження були отримані наступні результати: 1) вперше розроблено метод семантичного кодування мовних сигналів на основі емпіричного вейвлетперетворення, який відрізняється від існуючих методів побудовою множини адаптивних смугових вейвлет-фільтрів Мейера з подальшим застосуванням спектрального аналізу Гільберта для знаходження миттєвих амплітуд і частот функцій внутрішніх емпіричних мод, що дозволить визначити семантичні ознаки мовних сигналів та підвищити ефективність їх кодування; 2) вперше запропоновано використовувати метод адаптивного емпіричного вейвлет-перетворення в задачах кратномасштабного аналізу та семантичного кодування мовних сигналів, що дозволить підвищити ефективність спектрального аналізу за рахунок розкладання високочастотного мовного коливання на його низькочастотні складові, а саме внутрішні емпіричні моди; 3) отримав подальший розвиток метод семантичного кодування мовних сигналів на основі мел-частотних кепстральних коефіцієнтів, але з використанням базових принципів адаптивного спектрального аналізу за допомогою емпіричного вейвлет-перетворення, що підвищує ефективність даного методу.<br>The thesis is devoted to the solution of the actual scientific and practical problem in telecommunication systems, namely increasing the bandwidth of the semantic speech data transmission channel due to their efficient coding, that is the question of increasing the efficiency of semantic coding is formulated, namely – at what minimum speed it is possible to encode semantic features of speech signals with the set probability of their error-free recognition? It is on this question will be answered in this research, which is an urgent scientific and technical task given the growing trend of remote human interaction and robotic technology through speech, where the accurateness of this type of system directly depends on the effectiveness of semantic coding of speech signals. In the thesis the well-known method of increasing the efficiency of semantic coding of speech signals based on mel-frequency cepstral coefficients is investigated, which consists in finding the average values of the coefficients of the discrete cosine transformation of the prologarithmic energy of the spectrum of the discrete Fourier transform treated by a triangular filter in the mel-scale. The problem is that the presented method of semantic coding of speech signals based on mel-frequency cepstral coefficients does not meet the condition of adaptability, therefore the main scientific hypothesis of the study was formulated, which is that to increase the efficiency of semantic coding of speech signals is possible through the use of adaptive empirical wavelet transform followed by the use of Hilbert spectral analysis. Coding efficiency means a decrease in the rate of information transmission with a given probability of error-free recognition of semantic features of speech signals, which will significantly reduce the required passband, thereby increasing the bandwidth of the communication channel. In the process of proving the formulated scientific hypothesis of the study, the following results were obtained: 1) the first time the method of semantic coding of speech signals based on empirical wavelet transform is developed, which differs from existing methods by constructing a sets of adaptive bandpass wavelet-filters Meyer followed by the use of Hilbert spectral analysis for finding instantaneous amplitudes and frequencies of the functions of internal empirical modes, which will determine the semantic features of speech signals and increase the efficiency of their coding; 2) the first time it is proposed to use the method of adaptive empirical wavelet transform in problems of multiscale analysis and semantic coding of speech signals, which will increase the efficiency of spectral analysis due to the decomposition of high-frequency speech oscillations into its low-frequency components, namely internal empirical modes; 3) received further development the method of semantic coding of speech signals based on mel-frequency cepstral coefficients, but using the basic principles of adaptive spectral analysis with the application empirical wavelet transform, which increases the efficiency of this method. Conducted experimental research in the software environment MATLAB R2020b showed, that the developed method of semantic coding of speech signals based on empirical wavelet transform allows you to reduce the encoding speed from 320 to 192 bit/s and the required passband from 40 to 24 Hz with a probability of error-free recognition of about 0.96 (96%) and a signal-to-noise ratio of 48 dB, according to which its efficiency increases 1.6 times in contrast to the existing method. The results obtained in the thesis can be used to build systems for remote interaction of people and robotic equipment using speech technologies, such as speech recognition and synthesis, voice control of technical objects, low-speed encoding of speech information, voice translation from foreign languages, etc.

Abstract:
Today, the main research field for the automotive industry is to find solutions for active safety. In order to perceive the surrounding environment, tracking nearby traffic objects plays an important role. Validation of the tracking performance is often done in staged traffic scenarios, where additional sensors, mounted on the vehicles, are used to obtain their true positions and velocities. The difficulty of evaluating the tracking performance complicates its development. An alternative approach studied in this thesis, is to record sequences and use non-causal algorithms, such as smoothing, instead of filtering to estimate the true target states. With this method, validation data for online, causal, target tracking algorithms can be obtained for all traffic scenarios without the need of extra sensors. We investigate how non-causal algorithms affects the target tracking performance using multiple sensors and dynamic models of different complexity. This is done to evaluate real-time methods against estimates obtained from non-causal filtering. Two different measurement units, a monocular camera and a LIDAR sensor, and two dynamic models are evaluated and compared using both causal and non-causal methods. The system is tested in two single object scenarios where ground truth is available and in three multi object scenarios without ground truth. Results from the two single object scenarios shows that tracking using only a monocular camera performs poorly since it is unable to measure the distance to objects. Here, a complementary LIDAR sensor improves the tracking performance significantly. The dynamic models are shown to have a small impact on the tracking performance, while the non-causal application gives a distinct improvement when tracking objects at large distances. Since the sequence can be reversed, the non-causal estimates are propagated from more certain states when the target is closer to the ego vehicle. For multiple object tracking, we find that correct associations between measurements and tracks are crucial for improving the tracking performance with non-causal algorithms.

Full text
Abstract:
Yes<br>John Austin introduced the formulation “performative utterance” in his 1962 book How to do things with words. This term and the related concept of performativity have subsequently been interpreted in numerous ways by social scientists and philosophers such as Lyotard, Butler, Callon, or Barad, leading to the co-existence of several foundational perspectives on performativity. In this paper we review and evaluate critically how organization and management theory (OMT) scholars have used these perspectives, and how the power of performativity has, or has not, stimulated new theory-building. In performing a historical and critical review of performativity in OMT, our analysis reveals the uses, abuses and under-uses of the concept by OMT scholars. It also reveals the lack of both organizational conceptualizations of performativity and analysis of how performativity is organized. Ultimately our aim is to provoke a ‘performative turn’ in OMT by unleashing the power of the performativity concept to generate new and stronger organizational theories.

Kumar, Sushant. "Translation from batch to continuous processing of metal nanoparticle synthesis and application metallic nanostructures printed on flexible substrates." Thesis, 2021. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/5810.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the key challenges in nanoparticle synthesis is the quality control on scaling up the operation from bench to plant scale, which is constrained by conventionally adopted batch operation. Translation from batch operation to continuous green synthesis (metal, bi-metallic core-shell, and alloy nanoparticles (NPs)) with low polydispersity index (PDI) could unlock potential applications of metallic nanostructures with a projected market of $40.6 Billion and more by 20271. However, the continuous large-scale production suffers from high polydispersity due to lack of process optimization. We attempt to address such scale-up challenges while using the green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles in this work. The objective of this thesis is to optimize continuous processing of metal nanoparticle synthesis and demonstrate application of metallic nanostructure printed of flexible substrate using inkjet printing technology. The first part of the thesis is motivated by the desire to translate the batch protocol for NPs synthesis (developed in our group earlier)2,3 to a continuous process, and hence increase the affordability of NPs for end users. In this work, nanoparticle colloids are synthesized using different designs of CFRs and steady-state synthesis of nanoparticles is achieved with insignificant variation in particle size. Our results further showed that a balance between engineering and chemical parameters are required to obtain desired particle size distribution (PSD) and morphology during green synthesis of NPs. We improved our reactor design from channel to pool-based to address poor reagent mixing and our results show that the pool reactors could produce uniform particles of sizeii 7.2±1.0 nm with the production rate of 7.1 mg/h. We later moved to a CSTR-based reactor to address variations in the particles’ morphology while changing the flow rate of precursor salt. We found that the CSTR-based reactor can synthesise colloids (Gold, Silver, bimetallic gold-silver core-shell, and gold-silver alloy) at higher (10 times) flow rates and offers a better and affordable route for continuous nanoparticles synthesis within numerous applications in the healthcare and energy sectors. For the first time, to the best of my knowledge, the steady-state synthesis of metal nanoparticles is demonstrated here. After attaining steady state, the particle size distribution does not vary significantly. Investigations are performed to find out the effect of engineering parameters as well as chemical parameters. Particle size distribution is more sensitive to chemical parameters in comparison to engineering parameters. Although, engineering parameters like reactor design, mixing, temperature are important parameters to tailor nanoparticle size in a controlled fashion. Hence, there must be a balance between both to get desired particle size and morphology. In the second part of the thesis, we demonstrated the application of in-situ fabricated silver nanowires on copier paper for non-enzymatic glucose, using a form of inkjet printing technology. The inkjet printing technique is another avenue of fabrication of nanostructure-based flexible substrates that can be scaled using roll to roll printing techniques. Using this technique, we could fabricate, and customize electroadhesive pads based on interdigitated electrode designs with an interelectrode distance of 1 mm on paper. It was observed that, if left as a residue, lateral silver ion migration on applying high voltage leads to lowering of the gaps between electrodes, which resultsiii in increased load capacity. Further electromigration can be controlled by chemical fixing of the sample, i.e., by immersing printed samples in 0.5 M Sodium thiosulphate. The advantage of this process is that different designs of electrodes can be easily fabricated depending upon the required application. The in-situ fabricated silver nanowires incorporated with CuO/Cu2O nanoparticles are used for non-enzymatic glucose detection. Non-enzymatic sensors (4th generation) can replace the enzymatic detectors (3rd generation)4, but major challenge associated with 4th generation detectors is that it requires alkaline pH for reaction to be initiated. Paper based standard electrode (Ag/AgCl); silver nanowire incorporated with CuO/Cu2O nanoparticles (synthesised by wet chemical method) are used as working electrode. Ag nanowires modified with CuO nanoparticles show a linear increment in current with increase in glucose concentration. Glucose detection is performed in the concentration range of normal sugar level in human body in the range from 2.2 – 6.6 mM.iv References: 1 Metal Nanoparticles - Global Market Trajectory & Analytics 2021, <https://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/5030157/metal-nanoparticlesglobal-market-trajectory> (19/09/2021). 2 Sivaraman, S. Abstract:
With the establishment of the five Confucian classics as the orthodox state teachings in the reign of Emperor Wu (r.l4l-87 B.C.) of Han ) (206 B.C.-220 A.D.), classical studies became the major focus of Han scholarship until the end of the dynasty. As a result of the establishment of Han classical studies, two schools of scholarship - the New Text School and the Old Text School - came into being and influenced the specific directions intellectual activity was to take in this period. The New Text School ,as exemplified by the work of Dong Zhongshu (c.l79-c.l04 B.C.), became increasingly typified by its use of calendrical calculations, numerological correlations and ideas associated with yin-yang interpretations. In conjunction with these developments, individual schools under particular masters devoted to the study of a specific classical text were established, and more often than not, their legacy was a proliferation of ungainly 'chapter-and-verse' commentaries. By the time of Wang Mang (r.9-23 A.D.) and Guangwu (r.25-57 A.D.), the growth of this commentary tradition gave rise to apocryphal and prognostic texts which housed a huge corpus of omenistic lore and yin-yang theories. The beginning of the Ancient •Text Schooi can 'be traced to K1 ung An-kuo, a descendent of Confucius, in the time of the realm of Emperor Ching. This school was much more scholastic, humanistic and critical in outlook, and its exponents scorned the needlessly long-winded and pedantic 'chapter-and-verse' commentaries, 2 as well as the superstitious aspects of the New Text School's numerology, yin-yang associations and…
