Abstract:
Today’s critical discourses and theorizing vanguards agree on the importance of getting lost, of failure, of erring — as do life coaches and business gurus. The taste for a departure from progress and other teleologies, the fascination with disorder, unfocused modes of attention, or improvisational performances cut across wide swaths of scholarly and activist discourses, practices in the arts, but also in business, warfare, and politics. Yet often the laudible failures are only those that are redeemed by subsequent successes. What could it mean to think errancy beyond such restrictions? And what would a radical critique of productivity, success, and fixed determination look like that doesn’t collapse into the infamous ‘I would prefer not to’? This volume looks for an answer in the complicated word field branching and stretching from the Latin errāre. Its contributions explore the implications of embracing error, randomness, failure, non-teleological temporalities across different disciplines, discourses, and practices, with critical attention to the ambivalences such an impossible embrace generates.

Full text
Abstract:
The Kostroma breed of cattle of dairy and meat productivity is a valuable gene pool of domestic animal husbandry. Animals of this breed have high milk yields, good meat and reproductive qualities, easily adapt to intensive technologies and are characterized by resistance to tuberculosis, leukemia and brucellosis. The use of the gene pool of brown Swiss cattle of imported origin (USA, Canada, Austria) has a great influence on improving the competitiveness of the Kostroma breed. At the same time, when breeding Kostroma cattle, it is important not only to enrich heredity by using the gene pool of brown Swiss cattle of foreign breeding, but also to preserve its valuable qualities.
The monograph presents the history of the creation, characteristics of the modern breeding base of Kostroma cattle in the Kostroma region, the influence of bulls of different breeding on the economically useful qualities of cattle is noted. The analysis of custom-made mating in obtaining successor bulls and optimization of the genealogical structure of the herd, the economic efficiency of using breeding bulls of various origins (Russia, USA, Canada, Austria) are given.
It is intended for researchers, specialists of the breeding service, animal breeders of breeding farms, teachers and students of biological and agricultural areas of training and specialties of universities.

Full text
Abstract:
Cameroon’s informal labour market largely harbours female workers, engaged mainly in low-productivity and low-paying jobs. We investigate the sticky floor and glass ceiling phenomena in the informal labour market as a whole and across its segments. We use the 2010 Cameroon labour market survey, employing the recentred influence function and blending the Oaxaca-Ransom and Neuman-Oaxaca decomposition methods. The resulting framework enables us to account for selectivity bias at the mean, resolve the index number problem of the standard decomposition, and examine earnings differentials across the unconditional earnings distribution. We find compelling evidence of a sticky floor phenomenon in the informal labour market manifested essentially among wage earners. Returns to experience mitigate the gender earnings gap at the mean, and 10th and 50th percentiles of the unconditional earnings distribution. Female workers have an unambiguous human-capital-based advantage over their male counterparts at the mean, lower tail, and median of the distribution.

Full text
Abstract:
This study considers how household composition influences the leisure time of men and women in South Africa, using the South African 2010 Time Use Survey. Studying leisure time is important since the allocation of time outside the market provides insights into market behaviour and physical and mental health. Household composition and leisure consumption are highly gendered, with women typically living in larger households and consuming less leisure than men. Regression analysis shows that leisure time allocations are highly dependent on who lives in the household and Oaxaca–Blinder decomposition analysis finds that gender differences in mean leisure time can be attributed to household members, affecting the leisure time of male and female respondents differently. Overall, the results are consistent with traditional gender roles within the household and highlight the lack of intra-household bargaining power for women, providing evidence of gender inequality. Lower leisure consumption for women may have negative implications for their productivity in terms of paid and unpaid work, and for their well-being.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Labour Law Utopias: Post-Growth and Post-Productive Work Approaches engages with new socioeconomic ideas, or utopias, that look beyond the current growth-driven competitive market economy. Building on critiques of economic growth and the limits of the logic of human productivity and competitivity for workers and the planet, it explores alternative approaches and what they mean for work in general and labour law in particular. The concept of post-growth is used to rethink the purpose of the economy by looking beyond merely increasing wealth, consumption, and production. Post-productive work is introduced to question the centrality of economically productive work in labour law. The chapters in this book adopt a forward-looking approach and discuss whether and how labour law can contribute to emancipation from the constraints of growth and productivity by revisiting the value, organization, and impact of work on people and the environment.

Abstract:
The chapter poses questions about personhood, and explores them through some philosophy, extended examples from machine learning and artificial intelligence, and religious reflection. Parfit’s Reasons and Persons and the use of game theory is explored. The question of human free will is framed as centring on the issue of responsibility. Recent advances in AI, especially learning systems such as AlphaGo, are presented. These do not settle any fundamental questions about the nature of consciousness, but they do encourage us to ask what our attitude to autonomous machines should be. The discussion then turns to human evolutionary development, and to what makes humans distinctive, touching on scientific, philosophical, and theological issues. Some aspects of philosophy and theology can be productively approached through storytelling; this fruitful method is seen at work in the Bible. To be responsible lies at the heart of what it means to be human.

Abstract:
Imagine that I have recently moved to a new job in a new town and you ask me how I am settling in. If I were to tell you that I was getting into a rhythm, or, more likely, that I still needed to get into a rhythm but had not yet done so, you would probably know what I meant. Yet, if we stop to consider it, we find that what we mean when we refer to rhythm in this way is not at all clear. In this case, “getting into a rhythm” does not refer to an obviously rhythmic type of behavior like dancing. It does not refer to a given rhythm like that of a nursery rhyme or a piece of music with which I must synch up my behavior. Rather, I would be communicating something much more general, a way of approaching life that integrates routine and variation for maximum health, happiness, and productivity. But why do we express this idea through the concept of rhythm? And how do we all understand this idea even though we are only referring to something vaguely analogous to rhythmic entities like dances and nursery rhymes? What is this mysterious rhythm to which we supposedly have a relationship? And why is it so important to us?...

Abstract:
Home ranges of males (1204 km2) and females (1510 km2) were similar. Female home range size was positively related to the dispersion of prey and generally, but not exclusively, they displayed home range fidelity. Overlap between female home ranges was extensive, although they rarely met up. Male home ranges overlapped extensively and there was no difference in size between coalition and single males. Males overcame the problem of scent marking a large home range by concentrating scent marks in core areas. Generally female cheetah home range size is affected by resource productivity, although where prey are migratory, or in fenced reserves where movements are constricted, and areas where disturbance is severe, this may be different. Southern Kalahari males apparently need large home ranges to increase the likelihood of locating wide-ranging and sporadically receptive females. Mean dispersal distance for subadult males (96 km) was further than for females (39 km).

Full text
Abstract:
Since income is the return on wealth, the total wealth of a country should be around twenty times its GDP. Instead, the average observed ratio from the System of National Accounts (SNA) is a factor of 2.6–6.6. Clearly, wealth accounts are incomplete. Estimating the value of the most obvious omission, human capital, using the lifetime income approach for a sample of thirteen (mostly high-income) countries yields a mean share of human capital in total wealth of 63 per cent—four times the value of produced and fourteen times that of natural capital. But for selected high-income countries an average of 25 per cent of total wealth remains unaccounted. This residual intangible is arguably the ‘stock equivalent’ of total factor productivity—the value of assets such as institutional and social capital that augment the capacity of produced, natural, and human capital to support a stream of consumption into the future.

Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates the nuances of plant metaphors in wedding and love poetry. Plant metaphors in love poetry praise beautiful youths by equating them with flowers threatened by the passage of time. Such threats are meant to be warnings to recalcitrant lovers. In the wedding discourse, flowers risk being violently destroyed and symbolize peaceful independence for female speakers. While floral metaphors do not permit safe interaction beyond aesthetic appreciation, vine metaphors emphasize physical entanglement and fruitful productivity. Accounts of nuptial productivity use imagery and terminology connected with fruit, not grain crops, which further distinguishes the discourse of the wedding ritual from the agricultural language of the marriage. Plant imagery at times alludes to specific literary predecessors, but may also refer to generally recognizable commonplaces that are part of a larger cultural matrix of natural symbols.
