Abstract:
Overstatement plays the leading role organizing the phenomenon of communicative demonstrativeness by highlighting and translating meaningful information about the producer of the utterance. The purpose of the study is to identify and describe the properties and means of overstatement actualization. An interdisciplinary approach and the method of psycholinguistic analysis of the communicants’ speech output are used. The material for the analysis was the statements of the participants from the 2013-2022 television interviews. It is established that at present overstatement, the property of communicative demonstrativeness, is widely used as a means of the speakers’ attractive verbal behavior, caused by the need to obtain recognition of the personality identity that the speech producer presents from other people and its consolidation in the consciousness of the recipients. It is emphasized that the semantic basis of overstatement is the expression of the worldview possessed by a manipulative linguistic personality. Demonstrative overstatement, used to highlight a significant message, may have involuntary, intentional and periodic types and perform expressive, conative, aesthetic, pragmatic, denotative and contact functions. The study shows that overstatement in communicative demonstrativeness is realized in speech strategies of bragging, dramatization, false complaint, compliment, praise, condemnation, and humiliation as a way of self-promotion, over-evaluation and double over-evaluation, consisting of the adverb «absolutely» and an adjective. The linguistic means of actualization of overstatement are revealed: hyperbole, hyperbolic form of tropes (metaphors, epithets, comparisons), phraseological units, superlative adjectives, emotionally marked verbs, semantic and grammatical superlatives conveying the maximum degree of quality, intensifiers «very», «quite», exclamation sentences, shortened quotations, modified sayings and imperative suggestions. The results obtained can be used in the course of semiotics and psycholinguistics.

Abstract:
This paper presents a contrastive linguo-cognitive study of the phraseological semantic field, here viewed as a means of manifesting the corresponding fragment of the phraseological picture of the world built in consciousness and defined as a semantic unity of phraseological units which are connected with some phenomenon of thereal or imagined world and reveal the phraseological concept of this phenomenon. The paper focuses upon three main aspects of a contrastive linguo-cognitive study of the same phraseological semantic fields in different languages, highlighting their cognitive value: 1) a semantic inventory of the phraseological semantic field; 2) a phraseological representation of individual phraseological semantic groups as components of the phraseological semantic field and manifestants of separate features of the phraseological concept; and 3) a configuration of the component structure of the phraseological semantic field. The paper presents a method of contrastive linguo-cognitive study which is carried out in the three mentioned directions and allows explication on the basis of language data, as well as comparison and characterization of the contents of the different languages’ concepts and accents available in these contents. The method emphasizes the need to process language data and the importance of employing statistical procedures, both to estimate the relevance of possible interlanguage differences and to assess the possibility of their interpretation in terms of cognitive and cultural specificity. Use of the method is demonstrated through the example of a contrastive linguo-cognitive study of the Russian and English phraseological semantic field of arguing.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to reflect the relationship between the number of information encoding tools involved in the design of infographics, and the convenience and effectiveness of perception of its content. Infographics are considered as a screen message, within which information is presented with different ways of visual coding. The variability of decoded elements and their interaction can lead to synergy and dissonance of the content components of infographics, which encourages in-depth study of the conditions for combining encoded elements into a coherent information system. The methods: analytical and logical (identification of theoretical and methodological approaches to the construction of infographics, assessment of the impact on the audience), a systematic approach (systematization of the possibilities of forming an array of data in infographics, identifying problems and prospects for using visual information in infographic design), a method of analogies (determining the impact of visual information in infographic design on the audience). Results. The structure of communicative elements and stylistic characteristics of graphic images in the infographics design form an information system that collapses with the growth of ways of encoding information. Such a system involves maintaining a clear hierarchy in the compositional arrangement of elements and the logic of visual movement between them. Unlike banners, posters and packing, infographics can contain multiple optical centres and an extended colour-coding palette. The scientific novelty is represented by the definition of the levels of interaction of communicative elements and the establishment of compositional conditions, which include: maintaining a scale-proportional hierarchy of communicative elements; the relevance of the introduction of several optical centres and a significant number of equivalent image elements, supplemented by auxiliary planes (dies) to increase the legibility and readability of text blocks; limiting the number of iso-graphemes (not more than 3) as excellent ways of stylistic and graphic reproduction of pictorial elements; usage of no more than two different fonts; avoiding intersections or direct overlapping of text on the image; maintaining realistic proportions between the graphic elements; the use of a significant number of shades of colours, provided that the predominant mass of one or two colours in the characteristics of the chromatic composition of the overall semantic solution.

Abstract:
This article examines the artistic and expressive elements of M. Zhumabayev's poem “Homeland” and their translations into Russian and Turkish from both linguistic and cultural perspectives. Artistic and expressive elements are crucial for the 'embellishment' of any literary work, encapsulating the author's distinctive style. These elements, whether explicitly or implicitly meaningful, hold significant potential for impacting the reader, posing a substantial challenge for translators aiming to maintain the original's level of artistry. M. Zhumabayev's poetry is a treasured component of Kazakh literature, frequently translated into various languages worldwide. Despite this, translation quality and constructive criticism have yet to converge into systematic research. This article aims to identify the artistic and expressive means in Zhumabayev's “Homeland”, interpret their functional and cognitive roles, and conduct a comparative semantic and structural analysis of two Russian translations and two Turkish translations, highlighting differences. The research methodology is grounded in contemporary translation studies. Through this analysis, the article examines the translation methods and strategies employed in rendering the poem from Kazakh into Russian and Turkish, assesses their impact on the original work, explores the pros and cons of each approach, and considers how the translator's gender identity might influence the translation. Finally, it articulates general principles of poetic translation.

Abstract:
The article deals with the formation means of the idea of the world’s iridescence or illusiveness, its stylistic and translation aspects within the textual framework of Ph.K. Dick’s novel “Ubik” and its translat- ed version in Ukrainian. The relevance of the study is defined by general scarcity of current enquiries highlighting stylistic means of moulding the idea of the world’s iridescence in science fiction as well as translation methods of delivering it from English to Ukrainian. The purpose of this scientific inquiry is to identify the stylistic devices that play a role in the delinea- tion of ways in which reality may be reduced to tatters in comparison with a coherent state of things and to pinpoint the translation techniques of rendering the related contexts from English into Ukrainian. The top- icality of the study is determined by the paucity of relevant research focusing on the kernel of the prevail- ing theme in Dick’s “Ubik”, namely illusiveness of reality, and translation techniques and transformations that help adequately deliver the significant sequences from English into Ukrainian. It is argued that the idea in question being the core of the prevailing theme in Dick’s “Ubik” is at- tained by means of incorporating several ontological planes represented by mental constructs, or reali- ties, focalised through the perceptions and personalities of different characters of the novel. Contextu- al and text interpretation analyses enabled the authors to determine and interpret those semantic domi- nants that underpin the formation of the world’s iridescence effect in the novel, namely: “alternate reali- ties”, “dream as a variant of reality”, “changes in time and space”, “changes of forms of consciousness and existence”. It has been proven these dominants’ diegetic interrelation. The idea of the world’s iridescence in the novel is brought about by the literary work’s fluctuating plot convolutions stemming from seemingly incoherent planes of different sections of the novel: a mosaic of the primary diegesis together with several hypo-diegeses comes across as a kind of an ontic hazy maze building up to an overall effect of the world’s fluidity and oscillation. The method of stylistic analysis was applied to interpret stylistic phenomena inherent in the novel in relation to their contribution to the studied idea as those were found functioning in the relevant textu- al microcontexts and enhancing the aforementioned semantic dominants. It was esti mated that expres- estimated that expres- sive means and devices of stylistic syntax constitute four fifths of the whole researched corpus of units, thus playing a major role in the formation of the idea of the world’s illusiveness (those include aposiopesis, rhetoric questions, asyndeton, and nominative sentences) while expressive means and stylistic devices of stylistic semasiology prove much less numerous, accounting for a fifth of the units analysed (presented by metaphors, epithets, similes, antitheses). Among the typical translation methods, instrumental in the rel- evant textual sequences in “Ubik”, a share of lexical and semantic transformations equals 60.2% of the re- searched sets of translation counterparts, with modulation and specification being the dominant ones and logical synonymy, calquing and lexical compensation trailing behind. Grammatical transformations com- pose nearly two fifths (39.8 %) of the researched body of units, the most efficient ones being substitution and word order change. The results of the study enabled understanding the interaction mechanism of semantics of the leit- motif of a literary work, its stylistic representation and translation solutions of its delivery from English into Ukrainian. We envisage the prospects for further research in studying linguistic aspects of cross-cultural conveying symbolic significance of recurring narrative elements.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis paper analyses the function of the concept of positive discrimination, in the light of the Argumentative Semantics (cf. DUCROT; CAREL, 2005; DUCROT, 1988), in statements related to the prohibition of wage differences and acceptance criteria, to workers with and without disabilities, present in the Brazilian Constitution of 1988. This concept necessarily involves words that participate in distinct semantic blocks, discrimination, with the aspect DISCRIMINAÇÃO PT NEGATIVA (i.e., DISCRIMINATION THEREFORE NEGATIVE), as opposed to equality, IGUALDADE PT POSITIVA (i.e., EQUALITY therefore POSITIVE). However, the data indicate that such semantic opposition assumed in these statements those a unique presentation of DISCRIMINAÇÃO NE IGUALDADE (DISCRIMINATION however EQUALITY), highlighting that, legally, to equalize possibilities is sometimes necessary to discriminate, even if positively.KEYWORDS: Semantics. Abstract:
The aim of the research is to find out the formal and semantic features of abstracts to modern books on linguistics. The following tasks were performed to achieve this aim: to characterize the compositional and information structure, as well as linguistic and stylistic means of abstracts; to find out factors influencing the choice of form and content of the secondary document. Descriptive, comparative, bibliographic, bibliographic-functional methods, partly structural-typological, as well as social-communication-informational and documentary approaches were used. The scientific novelty of the research is that for the first time the texts of abstracts to scientific and popular science books on linguistics were analyzed comprehensively, in the unity of form and content. The material of the research in a specific academic field made it possible to consider the abstracts objectively, not in general, and to illustrate their features through examples. As the results of the study, it was found that abstracts to scientific publications can be marked, unmarked and mixed according to the structural and compositional features. The markers ensure coherence of the text, they organize and structure it. Unmarked abstracts inform about the publication in any form, highlighting the same information elements of the book’s content (novelty of the material, aspects of the study, its source base, results, etc.). A typical abstract to monographs on linguistics is an indicative two-paragraph text, which is organized with the help of markers and provides information about the thematic and semantic features of the specialist work of writing. The choice of the form and content of the abstract depends on the type of the primary document and on the type of the abstract by functional purpose. Abstracts to scientific publications are objective and moderate, while abstracts to popular science books are characterized by expressiveness, imagery, richness of linguistic and stylistic means.

Abstract:
This paper explores the formation of the anthropomorphic image of war in German and Ukrainian, highlighting the primary associations connected with the concept "war", revealing the influence of mass media on the deeply rooted patterns of anthropomorphic metaphor and discussing semantic aspects of its translation. The data was derived from the German and Ukrainian mass media (2014-2021) and verified within the framework of the sociolinguistic experiment, word association test to investigate the conceptualisation of war by the speakers of both languages in order to show that the choice of equivalents while translating publications about war should correspond to the socio-cultural dimension of a particular speech community, maintaining the ecolinguistic balance. Fifty respondents (25 German-speaking and 25 Ukrainian-speaking) aged from 18 to 50 (and above) were questioned, forming the focus-group for the pilot survey. The semantic and contextual analysis of the media publications, the conducted survey explicated that the main conceptual metaphorical and metaphtonymical patterns forming the anthropomorphic representation of war are used to revise the main principles of intercultural relations and proclaim the new age of the posthuman ethics underlining the inconsistency of war for the human nature. It was found out that the anthropomorphic metaphor is a means of media influence awaking the ecolinguistic consciousness, changing the translator's role to that of a mediator and peacemaker. Differences in the conceptualisation of war in German and Ukrainian can provoke misunderstanding or an inevitable semantic loss while translating anthropomorphic metaphors.

Abstract:
A significant part of the current research in the field of Artificial Intelligence is devoted to knowledge bases. New techniques and methodologies are emerging every day for the storage, maintenance and reasoning over knowledge bases. Recently, the most common way of representing knowledge bases is by means of graph structures. More specifically, according to the Semantic Web perspective, many knowledge sources are in the form of a graph adopting the Resource Description Framework model. At the same time, graphs have also started to gain momentum as a model for databases. Graph DBMSs, such as Neo4j, adopt the Labeled Property Graph model. Many works tried to merge these two perspectives. In this paper, we will overview different proposals aimed at combining these two aspects, especially focusing on possibility for them to add reasoning capabilities. In doing this, we will show current trends, issues and possible solutions. In this context, we will describe our proposal and its novelties with respect to the current state of the art, highlighting its current status, potential, the methodology, and our prospect.

Abstract:
What does it mean to be a ‘shaman’ in present-day Tokyo today? In what way(s) is the role of the shamanic practitioner represented at a popular level? Are certain characteristics emphasised and others downplayed? This book offers an answer to these questions through the analysis of a specific discourse on shamans that emerged in the Japanese metropolitan context between the late 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century, a discourse that the more ‘traditional’ approaches to the study on shamanism do not take into account. In order to better contextualise this specific discourse, the volume opens with a brief historical account of the formation of the academic discourse on shamans. Within the theoretical framework offered by critical discourse analysis and by means of multi-sited ethnographic research, it then weaves together different case studies: three novels by Taguchi Randy, a manga, a TV series and the case of an urban shaman who is mostly active in Tokyo. The main elements emerging from these case studies are explored by situating them in the precise historical and social context within which the discourse has been developed. This shows that the new discourse analysed shares several characteristics with the more ‘traditional’ and accepted discourses on shamanism, while at the same time differing in certain respects. In this work, particular attention is given to how the category and term ‘shaman’ is defined, used and re-negotiated in the Japanese metropolitan context. Through this approach, the book aims to further problematize the categories of ‘shaman’ and ‘shamanism’, by highlighting certain aspects that are not yet accepted by many scholars, even though they constitute a discourse that is relevant and effective.

Abstract:
Through a cultural-historical analysis, the chapter portrays the Opera-Telephone in Munich as a special means of listening and explores its technical, social, economic, and psychological aspects. These aspects strongly reflect the reciprocal relation of technical innovation and listening to music, for example, by emphasizing the meaning of live broadcasting for listening habits and by highlighting the impact of headphone use on aural perception. The latter practice enables the transfer of the multidimensional opera event into a pure listening experience as the visual element is eliminated. The Opera-Telephone also serves to illustrate matters of social status in regard to private and public listening. In this way, opera was incorporated into the marketing of modern technical products.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to clarify the terminology of and relations between ontological, epistemological, and semantic aspects of indeterminacy in medical classification systems. Although classifications of diseases and mental disorders are often characterized as having blurred boundaries, there is no consensus on what exactly this means. The following clarification may remedy this shortcoming: from an ontological point of view, disease entities are found to be discrete or continuous, depending on whether realisation gaps occur. From an epistemological perspective, the certainty of a classification depends on how controversial the assessment of its validity is throughout contexts and how much different legitimate interests of classification users vary. Finally, as semantic categories, medical classifications can be defined precisely or vaguely. The chapter analyses how the ontological, epistemological, and semantic levels are interrelated and how the proposed terminological clarifications may help to disentangle discussions about the validity of medical classifications.

Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the story of Mark’s gospel highlighting a variety of its key narrative aspects and emphasizing the discursive features that have most captured the interest of New Testament narrative critics. Next, it surveys the most significant scholarly literature on Mark written from a narrative-critical perspective, and draws attention to how narrative interpretations of Mark have paralleled the development of New Testament narrative criticism generally. Finally, it suggests two aspects of Mark’s narrative in need of further analysis: time and focalization. Taking Mark 6:7–30 as a test case, the chapter juxtaposes the filmLa jetéeto demonstrate how the Markan narrator’s manipulation of time and focalization triggers a host of complex questions, and offers the reader greater interpretive freedom, even as it undermines any certainty the reader may have concerning what the narrative means.

This chapter provides a critical overview of how people map sound features and musical excerpts onto the visual, visuo-spatial and kinaesthetic domains. Starting with a brief discussion of why cross-modal correspondences may exist in the first place, the chapter illuminates the rationale of traditional paradigms in experimental psychology before highlighting the revelatory potential of cross-modal drawing and gesture studies, both with children and adults. The influence of personal factors such as musical training as well as experimental factors pertaining to the type of stimulus, setting, instruction and task are highlighted and considerations for future experiments within the embodied cognition research programme are provided. It is concluded that studying systematically the perceived shapes of sound and music by means of drawings and gestures is an overdue step towards understanding linear and spatial aspects of human musical experience.

Abstract:
This volume offers an overview of current research on grammatical number in language. The chapters Part i of the handbook present foundational notions in the study of grammatical number covering the semantic analyses of plurality, the mass–count distinction, the relationship between number and quantity expressions and the mental representation of number and individuation. The core instance of grammatical number is marking for number distinctions in nominal expressions as in English the book/the books and the chapters in Part ii, Number in the nominal domain, explore morphological, semantic, and syntactic aspects of number marking within noun phrases. The contributions examine morphological marking of number the relationship between syntax and nominal number marking, and the interactions between numeral classifiers with semantic number and number marking. They also address cases of mismatches in form and meaning with respect to number displayed by lexical plurals and collective nouns. The final chapter reviews nominal number processing from the perspective of language pathologies. While number marking on nouns has been the focus of most research on number, number distinctions can also be found in the event domain. Part iii, Number in the event domain, presents an overview of different linguistic means of expressing plurality in the event domain, covering verbal plurality marking, pluractional modifiers of the form Noun preposition Noun, frequency adjectives and dependent indefinites. Part iv provides fifteen case studies examining different aspects of grammatical number marking in a range of typologically diverse languages.

Richardson-Self, Louise. Hate Speech against Women Online. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2021. https://doi.org/10.5040/9798881814502.

Full text
Abstract:
Why are women so frequently targeted with hate speech online and what can we do about it? Psychological explanations for the problem of woman-hating overlook important features of our social world that encourage latent feelings of hostility toward women, even despite our consciously-held ideals of equality. Louise Richardson-Self investigates the woman-hostile norms of the English-speaking internet, the ‘rules’ of engagement in these social spaces, and the narratives we tell ourselves about who gets to inhabit such spaces. It examines the dominant imaginings (images, impressions, stereotypes, and ideas) of women that are shared in acts of hate speech, highlighting their ‘emotional stickiness’. But offering strategies through which we may reimagine our norms of online engagement, the stories that justify those norms, and the logic that makes sense of it all, this book shows how we can create alternative visions of what it means to take up online space as a woman and to ensure that women are seen as entitled to be there. By exploring aspects of ‘social imaginaries’ theory and applying it to the problem of hate speech against women online, this book illuminates why woman-hating has become such a prominent feature of this environment and how we can make these spaces safer for women.

Wolodzko, Agnieszka. Affect as Contamination. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350333031.

Full text
Abstract:
Bringing the concept of contamination into dialogue with affect theory and bioart, Agnieszka Anna Wołodźko urges us to rethink our relationship with ourselves, each other and other organisms. Thinking through the lens of contamination, this book provides an innovative approach to understanding the leaky, porous and visceral nature of our bodies and their endless interrelationships and, in doing so, uncovers new ways for thinking about embodiment. Affect theory has long been interested in transmission or contagion but, inspired by Spinoza and Deleuze, Affect as Contamination goes further, as contamination is concerned with the materiality of bodies and their affective encounter with other matter. This brings urgency to the notion of affect, not only for bioart that works with risky bodies but also for understanding how to practise our bodies in the age of biotechnological manipulation and governance. Using challenging and transgressive bioart projects as provocative case studies for rethinking affect and bodily practice, Wołodźko follows various ‘contaminants’ from blood, hormones and viruses - including COVID-19 - to food, glitter and plants. This takes the form of both personal accounts of encounters with the contaminations of bioart and critical analyses of aesthetic, material and technical objects, with each one highlighting in different ways the risky and uncertain nature of contamination. Affect as Contamination is an urgent and original meditation on just what it means to be living, and practising our bodies, in an era where biotechnology contaminates all aspects of our lives.

Samata, Susan. Ainu of Japan Resisting the Suppression of Languages. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350456204.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume shows that, by moving away from code models that foster restrictive perceptions of language as learned words and rules, and towards an ecolinguistics capable of integrating with concepts of embodied cognition, it is possible to recognise a broad range of connections with a language from which an individual or community has become estranged. Using the Ainu of Japan as an example and comparator, this book reviews historical and contemporary suppression of languages as a means of, or as a bi-product of, the suppression of their speakers. Preservation of the Ainu language, which had no written form, has been central to official culture promotion programs, but the language has steadily declined in use. The Ainu experience has much in common with that of communities taken over and suppressed by oppressive forces in other countries and spans rural and urban contexts. Susan Samata examines the historical, social and ecolinguistic contexts of Ainu, with particular emphasis on presentation and perception in daily life. She also considers how aspects of ecolinguistic theory may be mapped onto museum practices, television and cinema, popular literature, and the promotion of tourism. These are then compared to the sociolinguistic situations of a selection of other languages and cultures in China, North America and Scandinavia. By highlighting points of similarity and dissimilarity, Samata demonstrates the factors that operate in the suppression of people and their languages and suggests ways in which the perspective described may support resistance to suppression and assimilation, not least in language teaching areas.

Abstract:
This study investigates determinants of socio-environmental practices, (mandatory and voluntary), as evidenced in southern Brazil’s electric energy distribution companies. It seeks to understand this phenomenon with interdisciplinary protection through theoretical constructs of Social Responsibility, Environmental Management, Evidence, Legitimacy, Reputation, and Institutional. This integration contributes to understanding the reasons why companies undertake and evidence their socio- -environmental practices to external audiences. The literature suggests that socio-environmental practices are explained by various reasons, such as: enforced by legal impositions and/or voluntariness, to strengthen legitimacy, maintain and develop a reputation, and by isomorphism of the competitive operating environment. Given the above, the objective of this work is to investigate factors that determine the disclosure of socio-environmental practices in electricity distribution companies in the south of Brazil. In the methodological aspects, a qualitative approach was used, with descriptive and exploratory objectives. As a research strategy, a multichannel study was applied through two electricity distribution companies in the south of the country, CELESC Distribuição S.A. (Centrais Elétricas de Santa Catarina) and COPEL Distribuição S.A. (Companhia Paranaense de Energia). Data collection took place in two stages, the first one with a search on documentary, physical and virtual basis, and the second stage using a semi-structured interview with professionals from the Social and Environmental Responsibility area of each of the companies surveyed. The information collected was related to the period of 2014, 2015, and 2016. The results showed that the Annual Reports, service stations, and participation in external events constitute the primary means and channels of evidence of socio-environmental practices. There was a greater tendency to develop social practices. However, there are programs focused on climate change, conscious consumption and electricity saving, social inclusion, recovery of citizenship, and people’s quality of life. The COPEL company presented a tendency to evidence voluntary practices with more intensity, also showing consistency and maintenance of the programs during the studied period. Regarding corporate and sustainability policies, it was noted that companies adopt very similar strategies. It is concluded that the age, size, and corporate reputation of companies are the main determinants of socio-environmental practices, highlighting the presence of mimetic isomorphism characterized by the use of the same types of means and channels of evidence and by the symmetry of practices and policies developed by companies CELESC and COPEL.

Abstract:
This chapter provides a semantic analysis of Japanese cooking verbs in comparison with English counterparts. It will be shown that some of the semantic components that are lexicalized (or incorporated) to form a verb’s meaning reflects a cultural conceptualization of food preparation. Building upon Lehrer’s (1972) analysis of Japanese cooking verbs but further revising it, the chapter will showcase relevant aspects of a culturally constructed conceptualization of food preparation reflected in the Japanese language. Interestingly, a comparison between Japanese and English appears to show a relatively meager inventory of cooking verbs in Japanese. However, while Japanese may have a more limited number of cooking verbs in which semantic components are lexicalized, the language makes available other linguistic means such as use of mimetics and compounding that detail the cooking process. These additional mechanisms help maintain the broad range of fine-grained descriptions pertinent to the cooking process, while simultaneously preserving a culturally constructed conceptualization of food preparation.

Abstract:
Abstract Narrative inquiry has emerged as a distinct and valuable research methodology within the human and social sciences. This chapter introduces the concept and significance of narrative inquiry as a means to gain profound insights into the diverse aspects of society, culture, and human actions. It begins by providing an overview of its central tenets and elements as a research approach, delving into the ethical considerations and reflexive aspects necessary to ensure the responsible and careful exploration of human experiences. The limitations of narrative inquiry are also discussed, including the “Rashomon effect” and the challenges of conducting “backyard research.” The chapter then examines the pedagogical implications of narrative inquiry, highlighting its potential to enrich educational practices and enhance student engagement. Looking toward the future, “Posthuman Narrative Inquiry” is proposed as a potential direction for the field. This chapter concludes by elucidating how stories shape realities and inspire a deeper understanding of the human condition, inviting researchers and students alike to appreciate the power of narratives and their transformative influence on the world.

Abstract:
AbstractIn certain uses, adjectives appear to make the semantic contribution normally associated with adverbs. These readings are often thought to be a peripheral phenomenon, restricted to one corner of the grammar and just a handful of lexical items. I’ll argue that it’s actually considerably more general than is often recognized, and that it admits two fundamentally different modes of explanation: in terms of the syntactic machinery that undergirds these structures and in terms of the ontology of the objects manipulated by its semantics. Both modes of explanation have been suggested for some of the puzzles in this domain, and I’ll argue both are necessary. With respect to adjectives including average and occasional, the key insight is that their lexical semantics is fundamentally about kinds. But to arrive at a more general theory of adverbial readings, it is also necessary to further articulate the compositional semantics. In this spirit, I’ll argue that these adjectives actually have the semantic type of quantificational determiners like every. If this way of thinking about adverbial readings is on the right track, it instantiates a means by which these two distinct modes of explanation—and the distinct aspects of cognition they may ultimately be associated with—both play a crucial role in bringing about the apparently aberrant behavior of this class of adjectives.

Abstract:
AbstractHealth information systems can be described at three layers: The domain layer describing entity types and functions, the logical tool layer describing application components, and the physical tool layer. Data can be classified into personal and non-personal data and into standardized and non-standardized data. The architectures of an information system can be characterized by the number of databases, the number of application systems, the number of application software products and vendors, and the communication pattern.Technical interoperability describes the ability of application systems to send or receive data. Syntactic interoperability comprises the ability to use predefined message structures. Semantic interoperability means the ability to exchange and process meaningful messages. Process interoperability addresses whether application systems can cooperate. Interoperability standards support one or more aspects of interoperability.Integrating application systems leads to integrated health information systems. Data integration is achieved when data that have been recorded once in one application system are made available in other application systems. Semantic integration is achieved when application systems actually use the same system of concepts. User interface integration is guaranteed when different application systems organize their user interfaces in a unified way. Context integration is achieved when context is preserved when switching application systems. Feature integration is achieved when software features are implemented only once. Process integration is guaranteed when business processes are supported by cooperating application systems.Several integration technologies such as transaction management, communication servers, and open platforms support integrity and integration in heterogeneous health information systems.

Abstract:
AbstractNowadays, technological progress undoubtedly represents a competitive advantage in almost all the human being spheres of action, both at the individual and collective level. With multiple recognized beneficial influences, digital transformation is, among others, a key factor in the evolution of the modern economy and society. However, understanding the multifaceted effects of the technological tools involvement in crisis conditions requires a more in-depth approach. Thus, through the lens of Ukraine’s war experience, the present chapter aims to examine notable aspects related to the intersection of conflict, digitalization, and economic development.Exploring the perspective of the last decades, the analysis of the existing evidence depicts the undeniable efforts of Ukraine in the direction of digitalization, materialized in noteworthy results that demonstrate, among others, the benefits of technological progress in the face of situations characterized by risk and uncertainty. Under the war conditions, the use of digital resources proved to be one of the key means implied to reduce the crisis effects at multiple levels. However, the paradigmatic shift in dynamics through the use of technology has also brought new challenges, highlighting the urgent need for states to adapt their national strategies to the digital age. Finally, the analysis investigates and proposes possible policy directions and strategies to support the digital transformation of Ukraine in the short, medium, and long term. Drawing lessons from Ukraine’s experience, the obtained results support the need for a coordinated global response to address the challenges posed by the evolving nature of conflict in the digital age.

Digital means of communications such as email and IM have become a crucial tool for collaboration. Taking advantage of the fact that information exchanged over these media can be made persistent, a lot of research has strived to make sense of the ongoing communication processes in order to support the participants with their management. In this chapter, a workflow-oriented approach is pursued to demonstrate how, coupled with appropriate information extraction techniques, robust knowledge models, and intuitive user interfaces, semantic technology can provide support for email-based collaborative work. While eliciting as much knowledge as possible, the design concept in this chapter imposes little to no changes and/or restrictions to the conventional use of email.

Abstract:
Abstract Oppositeness of meaning, as has been shown in the previous chapter, has often been regarded as an important principle structuring the vocabulary of a natural language. In a way, however, the phenomenon as such has always been treated as simply existing, with hardly any consideration as to the actualization and textual function of semantic opposition on the level of language-use (parole).1 It is not difficult to see the reason for avoiding such an enterprise; establishing opposites on the expression plane presupposes knowing that the meaning of lexeme A and the meaning of lexeme B can/do enter a relation of oppositeness on the content plane, and meaning-relations on the content plane arc accessible only via generalizations on the expression plane—which means that the investigator is trapped in a vicious circle. Nevertheless, with a certain amount of “pretheoretical” know ledge it is possible to ‘identify units by virtue of their potentiality of occurrence in certain syntagms’ (Lyons 1977, 241), i.e. it can be shown that opposites show a tendency to appear more often and more regularly in some syntagmas than they do in other.;.

Abstract:
This paper presents an approach to ontology construction pursued through the induction of concept descriptions expressed in Description Logics. The author surveys the theoretical foundations of the standard representations for formal ontologies in the Semantic Web. After stating the learning problem in this peculiar context, a FOIL-like algorithm is presented that can be applied to learn DL concept descriptions. The algorithm performs a search through a space of candidate concept definitions by means of refinement operators. This process is guided by heuristics that are based on the available examples. The author discusses related theoretical aspects of learning with the inherent incompleteness underlying the semantics of this representation. The experimental evaluation of the system DL-Foil, which implements the learning algorithm, was carried out in two series of sessions on real ontologies from standard repositories for different domains expressed in diverse description logics.

Abstract:
Dynamic reasoning environments are among the key aspects in formal argumentation research. Presumably the best understood problem is the so-called enforcement problem which asks, generally speaking, whether a given argumentation framework can be modified in a way that a certain desired outcome is ensured. However, enforcement research primarily focuses on the acceptance of arguments or sets thereof. This paper aims to explore the dual problem and investigates means to reject certain unreasonable viewpoints. To achieve this, we use labelling semantics on abstract argumentation frameworks (AFs), since they provide a clearly defined notion of rejection. We consider different kinds of updates for our given AF and provide results on existence as well as minimality of syntactic and semantic changes. For the latter, we define the new concept of consensus preservation, formalizing the intuition that formerly acceptable opinions should remain acceptable in the adapted framework. Lastly we discuss how these two notions of minimizing change interact.

Abstract:
With the advent of the big-data era, massive textual information stored in electronic and digital documents have become valuable resources for knowledge discovery in the fields of design and engineering. Ontology technologies and semantic networks have been widely applied with text mining techniques including Natural Language Processing (NLP) to extract structured knowledge associations from the large-scale unstructured textual data. However, most existing works mainly focus on how to construct the semantic networks by developing various text mining methods such as statistical approaches and semantic approaches, while few studies are found to focus on how to subsequently analyze and fully utilize the already well-established semantic networks. In this paper, a specific network analysis method is proposed to discover the implicit knowledge associations from the existing semantic network for improving knowledge discovery and design innovation. Pythagorean means are applied with Dijkstra’s shortest path algorithm to discover the implicit knowledge associations either around a single knowledge concept or between two concepts. Six criteria are established to evaluate and rank the correlation degree of the implicit associations. Two engineering case studies were conducted to illustrate the proposed knowledge discovery process, and the results showed the effectiveness of the retrieved implicit knowledge associations on helping providing relevant knowledge from various aspects, and provoking creative ideas for engineering innovation.

The current context requires a rethinking and a reset of the approach to the educational approach by not renouncing everything that is traditional, but resizing the aspects that bring added value to education. One of the contemporary challenges, which has obviously increased, is the ability of the teacher to integrate and value, from a didactic, formative and interactional point of view, the new means of information and communication. That is why training, coaching and monitoring the process of adapting to the digital age has become a natural process in the educational world.

Abstract:
The Semantic Web, especially in relation to ontologies, provides a structured, formal framework for knowledge interoperability. This trait has been exploited by both the biomedical community in development of the Human Gene Ontology [1] and also by geographers in development of geospatial ontologies [2]. Using semantic relatedness techniques, researchers from both communities have been able to develop and integrate comprehensive knowledge bases. Beyond knowledge integration, semantic relatedness techniques have also been able to provide each community with a unique insight into relationships between concepts in their respective domains. In the engineering community, semantic relatedness techniques promise to provide similar insight into product development processes. This paper explores the application of semantic relatedness techniques to ontologies as a means towards improved knowledge management in product development processes. Several different semantic relatedness techniques are reviewed, including a recently developed meronomic technique specific to domain ontologies. Three of these techniques are adopted to create a semantic relatedness measure specifically designed to identify and rank underlying relationships that exist between aspects of the product development process. Four separate case studies are then presented to evaluate the relative accuracy of the developed algorithm and then determine its effectiveness in exposing underlying relationships.

Abstract:
Due to the practice-oriented nature of Translation and Interpreting study programmes, students are generally assumed to have a reluctant attitude towards the study of theory. However, previous empirical research allows us to dispel this myth: students are aware of the contribution of translation theory to their education as future translators. Taking into account students' needs and expectations, in this paper emphasis is placed on curricular design. A critical examination of the syllabi of Translation Theory subjects, focusing on learning outcomes and teaching methodology, reveals some (mis)matches between teaching planning and the students' expectations. The results obtained show a relatively high degree of coincidence between these two aspects on the one hand, while also highlighting some inaccuracies in the teaching planning of these subjects on the other. These two aspects should be considered a starting point for a revision of the curricular design in order to present an accurate description of the subject by means of an adequate explanation of the intended learning outcomes and teaching methodology, and in order to provide students with significant and useful insights into the theoretical dimension of translation.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the examination of French paremias with the “argent” lexeme, (meaning”money”), from the point of view of theoretical understanding of proverbs in modern linguistics, as well as from linguaxiological and linguoculturological aspects. The article first focuses on the lack of general consensus around the definition of paremia and proverb and analyzes the reasons. Next, the article focuses on the semantic analysis of paremias with the «argent» component in order to identify the place of money in the value system of an individual and society as a whole. It has been established that proverbs contain the judgment that money is a material value necessary for life, but from the point of view of moral norms, it becomes good or evil depending on a person’s moral or immoral attitude towards it. Money is valued as good if it is honestly earned, wisely spent, ensures human well-being and is the driving force of society. Money is considered evil if it is obtained dishonestly and becomes the cause of greed and social inequality. A neutral and controversial assessment of the role of money is to recognize the pros and cons of having wealth and point out that money is not the main value.

Abstract:
The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in the automotive industry has revolutionized various aspects, including object identification, hazard recognition, speech recognition, and driver assistance. In this scientific paper, we propose a novel approach that leverages AI to enhance the integration of boardnet design in the automotive domain. The primary objective of the boardnet is to ensure reliable power distribution, efficient energy management, data communication, effective sensor integration, precise actuator control, and the integration of advanced features while prioritizing safety, reliability, and optimal performance of the vehicle's electrical system. Our proposed model utilizes inference-based AI techniques, incorporating both external and internal routing AI within a semantic framework. By aligning the model with a top-level ISO 26262 standard definitions ontology, we establish a systematic systems and electronics semantic framework that seamlessly integrates with existing design processes. The model accommodates the expertise of system engineers and knowledge engineers, enabling the harmonious integration of their distinct approaches.Furthermore, this paper explores the automation of design process gaps through the deduction of valuable information. By employing OWL DL 2 and logical axioms, we demonstrate the reasoning capabilities of our approach, highlighting its advantages in terms of speed, usability, and integration within the overall design process. The integration of AI and semantic modeling in boardnet design facilitates intelligent decision-making, optimization, and automation. The semantic framework enables a comprehensive understanding of the boardnet and its components, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the design process. The proposed approach contributes to the advancement of automotive design and development practices, enhancing power distribution, energy management, data communication, sensor integration, actuator control, and the integration of advanced features. To validate the effectiveness of our approach, we conducted a series of experiments and evaluations. The results demonstrate that AI-enabled semantic modeling significantly improves the boardnet integration process. It facilitates improved power distribution, makes the energy management more pervasive, the data exchange among components seamless, and precises regulation of actuators. Moreover, the integration of advanced features becomes smoother, providing enhanced functionalities to vehicles while maintaining safety, reliability, and optimal performance.Additionally, we highlight the practical implications of our research by discussing real-world use cases. By using property classifications, inverse object properties, property chains and complex class expressions, the design process is amended by filling additional and complementary information which reduces development time. The benefits extend to increased vehicle performance, and reduced maintenance requirements. In conclusion, this paper establishes the significance and potential of AI-enabled semantic modeling for boardnet integration in automotive design. By leveraging AI techniques and semantic frameworks, engineers and researchers can achieve superior design outcomes, drive innovation, and meet the evolving demands of the automotive industry. The experimental results and real-world use cases presented herein provide a solid foundation for further exploration and adoption of AI in boardnet integration, contributing to the advancement of automotive technologies and the realization of intelligent, efficient, and reliable vehicles.

Today eLearning means more than learning content and courseware, and it goes far beyond the Learning Management Systems (LMS), Personal Learning Environment (PLE), administration tools and authoring tools for building courses. Addressing both • the lack of face-to-face interaction and • the lack of sophistication in terms of Computer-Based Assessment, along with • the challenge of developing engaging and stimulating on-line lessons for students who shifted from a paper-based culture with handwriting, highlighting, post-it and gap-filling to a screen-based culture, with e-mails, blogging, gaming and webcams, streaming and googling are but a few of the solutions that would tailor eLearning for the 21st century skills and curriculum. Institutions have already challenged themselves unto meeting the new millennial students’ needs by providing courses which foster not only life and career skills, but also learning and innovation ones, in corporate training and formal education environments alike, focused on professional development and encompassed by clear standards, as well as assessment and curriculum issues. The present paper will showcase the actions taken with respect to all these aspects, both in Romania, by a team within “Carol I” National Defense University, and in Spain, by a team from ESADE University. The first team will lay stress on the foreign language education-related organizational and pedagogical changes meant to support blended and eLearning strategies and management, whereas the second one will refer to management and law education; the main objective of the paper is to share the lessons learned, by highlighting both commonalities in terms of educational and methodological approach, and differences in terms of cultural response and attitudes of those benefiting from the eLearning type of education, irrespective of the way the latter is delivered – be it on-line or blended.

Abstract:
Almost 70 years since the first standardized containers were handled and this mode of transport began to take shape worldwide, container shipping is on an upward slope in terms of its role in international maritime trade. Also, the demand for the development of this means of transport has led to the need to design specialized ships with increasingly larger capacities, in 2022 the threshold of 24,000 TEUs was exceeded (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit –TEU is foremost used to describe a twenty-foot shipping container). Hence, the implementation of changes in the maritime field highlighting only three issues of this kind: the vision for the development of multimodal transport, the configuration of terminals specialized in handling containers (SCT – Specialized Container Terminal), the expansion of the limits regarding the width of some key locks for trade between the Pacific and Atlantic ports and not only. The paper analyzes the aspects regarding the development of maritime container transport in close connection with the situation regarding container traffic in the ports of the Black Sea basin. The changes that occurred in each Black Sea container handling port during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as those caused by the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine (transport routes, quantities, current and future needs), are analyzed and presented.
