Abstract:
Introduction Care and management of a life threatened child is a stressful event per se, further aggravated by the need for precise calculation of medication doses, the amount of fluids for volume replacement and choosing the rightsized equipment based on child's weight and age, which is often an information unavailable at the scene of the emergency event. Objective Our objective was to make a pediatric tape modeled by Broselow tape, but modified for medications and overall conditions present in our region. The original Broselow tape is not available in our country. Method and materials For tailoring this pediatric tape we used the original Broselow tape. The connection between length/height of a child and its body weight was used in the same way, and then doses of medications and sizes of medical equipment were calculated for the appropriate age/body weight. Discussion Our pediatric tape has two measuring parts: measuring tape with colored zones and cards that follow the appropriate color. Tape is divided into nine zones with calculated doses of medications, the amounts of fluids for volume replacement and sizes of equipment for each zone. Conclusion Hoping that this pediatric tape will find its place and use in our region, we hereby open a discussion of our professional community regarding this accessory and its future potential.

Abstract:
Construction problems long have been a favorite subject in geometry. Indeed, students find constructions a welcome diversion from the formal deductive approach to geometry. In classical construction problems only the use of ruler and compass is allowed, and the ruler is used merely as a straightedge, not for measuring or marking off distances. This restriction to ruler and compass goes back to antiquity. The Greeks, however, did not hesitate to use other instruments when the need arose. For example, a ruler in the form of a right angle was used to solve certain problems such as “doubling the cube” (Courant and Robbins 1941).

Abstract:
Salman LB, Djaja W, Anang A, Indrijani H, Partasasmita R. 2017. Birth weight of a Holstein calf based on forefoot circumference. Nusantara Bioscience 9: 367-370. Record of birth weight of Holstein calf can be used as consideration for selection. The purpose of this study is to determine the accuracy of birth weight based on regular measuring tape compared to Calf scale BW Tape. The records of calf’s birth weight were collected from 1370 female calf birth records from PT Taurus Dairy Farm, Sukabumi. Birth weight measurements were performed by (i) measuring birth weight using Calf scale BW Tape (Nasco, Fort Atkinson, WI); (ii) predicting birth weight with regression based on the circumference of the right front toenails using regular measuring tape a day after the calf was born; (iii) weighing the calf with the scales. The results showed that the predicted birth weight of dairy cow’s calves can be done by regular measuring tape with a polynomial regression equation, Y=(-6288,6)+(1378.8X)-(113.0X2)+(4.1X3)-(0.056X4), which has a deviation 0.5%, and 7.4% using Calfscale BW Tape. Conclusion of this research is that predicting birth weight of dairy cow’s calves using regular measuring tape is more accurate than using Calfscale BW Tape

Hind, Simon. "Predicting and measuring thermal conductivity in carbonepoxy unidirectional tape and textile reinforced composites." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28565.

Full text
Abstract:
The directional thermal conductivity of composite parts and moulds has a strong effect on out-of autoclave manufacturing operations. Limited thermal conductivity and variability data is available for composites made from carbon fibres that are widely used in mould and aircraft construction. A summary of experimental measurements and directional thermal conductivity models for carbon/epoxy composite materials is presented. Experimental data were collected for AS4 fibre unidirectional tape prepreg and T300 fibre unidirectional non-woven and plain weave textile reinforced composites. Lamination sequences included [0°]n, [0°/90°]n, [0°/90°/0°] n, [0°/60°/-60°]n and [0°/+45°/-45°/90°] n. Manufacturing methods included hybrid hand-layup and autoclave curing. Variability is quantified in all cases. Techniques for the predictive modeling of directional thermal conductivity are assessed. Classical lamination theory and models of conductivity for homogeneous assemblies of aligned fibres were used to determine thermal conductivity of tape prepreg and thermal properties of textile yarns. Unit cell simulations of textile based composites were performed to quantify the effect of changes in reinforcement geometry and configuration on directional thermal conductivity. A series of steady-state finite element models were developed for non-woven composites, unidirectional and cross-ply, and for plain weave textiles [0°/90°], [0°/90°/0°] n and [0°/+45°/-45°/90°]. Recommendations for the applicability of different modeling methods for the determination of thermal conductivity in composite materials are presented.

Abstract:

Transtibial stump volume can change dramatically postoperatively and jeopardise prosthetic fitting. Differences between individuals make it hard to give general recommendations of when to fit with a definitive prosthesis. Measuring the stump volume on every patient could solve this, but most methods for volume assessments are too complicated for clinical use.

The aim of this study was to evaluate accuracy and intra- and interrater precision of a method to estimate stump volume from circumferential measurements. The method approximates the stump as a number of cut cones and the tip as a sphere segment.

Accuracy was evaluated theoretically on six scanned stump models in CAPOD software and manually on six stump models. Precision was evaluated by comparing measurements made by four CPOs on eight stumps. Measuring devices were a wooden rule and a metal circumference rule. The errors were estimated with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), where 0,85 was considered acceptable, and a clinical criterion that a volume error of ±5% was acceptable (5% corresponds to one stocking).

The method was accurate on all models in theory but accurate on only four models in reality. The ICC was 0,95-1,00 for intrarater precision but only 0,76 for interrater precision. Intra- and interrater precision was unsatisfying when using clinical criteria. Variations between estimated tip heights and circumferences were causing the errors.

The method needs to be developed and is not suitable for stumps with narrow ends. Using a longer rule (about 30 cm) with a set square end to assess tip heights is recommended to improve precision. Using a flexible measuring-tape (possible to disinfect) with a spring-loaded handle could improve precision of the circumferential measurements.

Abstract:
The purpose of this report is to highlight customers' problems in finding the right size when shopping for clothes in an online store. The focus area is to investigate whether it is possible for customers to take accurate body measurements or garment measurements with a measuring tape in order to select appropriate clothing size in e-commerce.   A market investigation on the internet was conducted to find out how clothing companies design their size guides. Then a study took place with 20 participant soldiers. They were asked to follow the instructions for taking body measurements of themselves, to take measurements of each other and to measure two selected garments. Finally, they where measured by a garment technologist. The result showed a very large difference, and several of the measures had a span from -6 cm to +6 cm. One finding was that some measurement results were improved when someone else than themselves performed the body measuring. Afterwards the participants were asked to answer a few questions. Around 60 % of the them believed that a film instruction could facilitate the body measuring. The conclusion is that it is important to inform the customers in the size guide that it is important to get help to get as accurate measurements as possible and that an instructional film can facilitate the measuring. A complement to body measurements can be garments measurements in the size guide.

Abstract:
There are three methodological challenges to measuring the effectiveness of medical interventions: the choice of good measuring instruments, the use of appropriate analytic measures, and the use of a reliable method of extrapolating measures from an experimental context to a more general context. In practice each of these challenges contributes to overestimating the effectiveness of medical interventions. These challenges suggest corrective principles. The instruments employed in clinical research should measure patient-relevant and disease-specific parameters. Effectiveness always should be measured and reported using absolute outcome measures (such as ‘risk difference’), and we should employ caution when interpreting relative outcome measures (such as ‘relative risk reduction’). Extrapolating from research settings to clinical settings should more rigorously take into account possible ways in which interventions can fail to be effective in a target population. Current regulatory standards for drug approval are insufficient to manage these problems of measurement.

Abstract:
How can we know if the peace that has been established following a civil war is a stable peace? More than half of all countries that experienced civil war since World War II have suffered a relapse into violent conflict—in some cases more than once. Meanwhile the international community expends billions of dollars and deploys tens of thousands of personnel each year in support of efforts to build peace in countries emerging from violent conflict. This book argues that efforts to build peace are hampered by the lack of effective means of assessing progress towards the achievement of a consolidated peace. Rarely, if ever, do peacebuilding organizations and governments seek to ascertain the quality of the peace that they are helping to build and the contribution that their engagement is making (or not) to the consolidation of peace. More rigorous assessments of the robustness of peace are needed. These assessments require clarity about the characteristics of, and the requirements for, a stable peace. This in turn requires knowledge of the local culture, local history, and the specific conflict dynamics at work in a given conflict situation. Better assessment can inform peacebuilding actors in the reconfiguration and reprioritization of their operations in cases where conditions on the ground have deteriorated or improved. To build a stable peace, it is argued here, it is important to take the measure of peace.

Abstract:
Measuring Metabolic Rates demystifies the field of metabolic rate measurement, explaining every common variation of the art, from century-old manometric methods through ingenious syringe-based techniques, direct calorimetry, aquatic respirometry, stable-isotope metabolic measurement, and every type of flow-through respirometry. Each variation is described in enough detail to allow it to be applied in practice. Special chapters are devoted to metabolic phenotyping and human metabolic measurement, including room calorimetry. Background information on different analyzer and equipment types allows users to choose the best instruments for their application. Respirometry equations—normally a topic of terror and confusion to researchers—are derived and described in enough detail to make their selection and use effortless. Tools and skills—many of them open source—that will amplify the innovative researcher’s capabilities are described. Vital topics such as manual and automated baselining, implementing multi-animal systems, common pitfalls, and the correct analysis and presentation of metabolic data are covered in enough detail to turn a respirometry neophyte into a hardened metabolic warrior, ready to take on the task of publication in peer-reviewed journals with confidence.

Abstract:
Starting from a critique of the concept of "natural capital" which helps in defining the concepts of territorial and rural capital, the utility is affirmed of measuring the sustainability of individual and collective actions with respect to the contribution they offer to their production and reproduction. The analysis of case studies therefore poses the problem of over-exploitation of territorial capital in the absence of adequate investments for its reproduction. This requires a detailed evaluation of the eco-territorial services, focusing on the communities of actors who take care of them.
