Abstract:
The direction of osteons in cortical bone has been shown to be well correlated with the strongest loading direction of the bone as a whole. Therefore, determining the orientation of osteons in the rib cage is an important step in understanding the behavior of the rib cage under mechanical load. A total of 37 specimens were removed from several rib locations from a male and female cadaver. Eight histological slides were created from each 5 mm long section. Image analysis included the use of a computer algorithm created in Matlab to track the center of each osteon throughout the rib section. Ana

Abstract:
Magnesium is one of the most abundance element in nature, and it's characterised by a lower density than aluminium. These characteristics confer great potential to magnesium alloys, which are so used for specialised applications, like for military purposes and in the aerospace industry. While some magnesium alloys, including the AM60B alloy, are historically associated to high pressure die casting, for such applications the magnesium alloy components are usually produced by the gravity casting process, in order to minimise the defect's content and to achieve better castings' mechanical propert

Abstract:
Bone is a composite material consisting of hydroxyapatite crystals deposited in an oriented manner on a collagen backbone. The arrangement of the mineral and organic phases provides bone tissue with the appropriate strength, stiffness, and fracture resistance properties required to protect vital internal organs and maintain the shape of the body. A remarkable feature of bone is the ability to alter its properties and geometry in response to changes in the mechanical environment. However, in cases of metabolic bone diseases or aging, bone can no longer successfully adapt to its environment, inc

This research work focuses on a comparative study on weld bead geometries of three different welding techniques: Cold Metal Transfer (CMT), Metal Inert Gas Pulse Synergic (MIG P) and MIG Manual Standard (MIG M). Bead-on-plate tests were performed using ER4043 (AlSi5%) as a filler material on the 3.18 mm thick plates of AA6061-T6. Current (80 A, 100 A and 120 A) and welding speed (7.5, 10.5 and 13.5 mm/sec) were used as input process parameters while shielding gas flow rate and contact tip to workpiece distance (CTWD) were maintained constant as 15 l/min and 10mm respectively.

Additive manufacturing is revolutionizing the way of production and use of materials. The clear tendency for shifting from mass production to individual production of net-shape components has encouraged using selective laser melting (SLM) or electron beam melting (EBM). In this thesis, austenitic, duplex and martensitic stainless steel parts were fabricated by laser melting technique using fixed laser scanning parameters. The fabricated steel parts were characterised using XRD, SEM, TEM/STEM, SADP and EBSD techniques. Mechanical properties of the fabricated steel parts were also measured. The
